2014 NFL (Well, Browns, so, sorta "NFL") Draft Thread

So, guys....I've been gone for quite some time. Working on buying a new house (got that all secured on the 10th of April and am posting this from the new crib).

Teddy Bridgewater. That's who the Browns should have picked up, in my honest opinion.

The Money Badger is a massive fail. He has zero skills that translate to the NFL level other than scrambling like Fran.

EDITED:

Let me tell you why I think that Bridgewater is the guy.

He ran in a West Coast Offense in College.

Run by one Shawn Watson. Currently the QBs Coach at Texas (yeah right).

Any QB that survives with that guy as his O-Coordinator has my sympathy.

 at the bolded. What teams did you think needed a qb? This is my list Texans, Jags, Raiders, Tennessee, Vikings, Tampa (I could give you tampa but stilll McCown & Glennon), Jets, Bears (Yea given Culters history they need someone), Zona. I'll give you Tampa, Jets & Bears those are a bit of a stretch but ALL Of the other teams passed on him... hell Zona traded DOWN when they coulda had him.

I think your list of teams that needed a QB from their early picks is about twice as long as what's true in reality.

You really think the Bears were looking for a 1st round QB? Cutler is better than anybody in this draft and they just signed him to a seven-year deal this offseason.

Why would Arizona draft a QB in the first round? They went 10-6 with Carson Palmer last year.

The Raiders just signed Matt Schaub. Sure, he's not that good. The Raiders have to feel they addressed their need for now though and they'd be stupid to sign him and then use a top-10 pick at the same position.

The Jets used an early pick on Geno Smith last season. They were never going to cut bait on him so quickly.

The Texans of course need a QB, but they were never going to take one #1 overall. They were never going to pass on Clowney. They could have traded back into the first round to ensure they got a guy like Bridgewater, but up until the point that Minnesota and Seattle made their deal they had to feel pretty good about their spot in the second round. Who knows, maybe they still do.

Obviously, Jacksonville, Cleveland and Minnesota were in the market for a first-round QB because they each took one. The only other teams that I thought realistically might take somebody (barring Al Davis/Jerry Jones-type megalomania) were Tampa Bay and Tennessee. The spots where they were drafting were too high to spend on any of these QBs though and it doesn't look like either of those teams had the ammo to trade trade into the part of the first round where Manziel and Bridgewater got picked.

Johnny could have been there in the middle round 2. It was clear nobody was going to take a flyer on him in the first. Yet, the Browns move up to get him in the first.

There's no way he would have made it out if the first round. If you wait until the mid-second to draft a QB you're looking at Jimmy Garoppolo or worse.

How cute that you focus on ones the hit but ignore the ones they miss because they're supposed "experts". See how that works?

And if you don't think ESPN is feeding Gruden a script to slurp Johnny on draft day for ratings and controversy, you are more ignorant than you sound.

I don't think Gruden is scripted that much. I think he just naturally goes all Brick Tamland "I LOVE LAMP" whenever he sees or talks about a QB - any QB.

I have to agree...someone was taking him in round 1, and the rumors are that Minnesota was going to trade up and get him if we didn't.

The Browns "should" be in a no-lose position. At 35, they are guaranteed to grab Allen or Lee to complement Gordon or Moses (kicking Schwartz to guard) or grabbing Su'a-Filo and plugging him in at guard.

Which do you see as a bigger need? I think Su'a-Filo and Lee are very comparable talent-wise (completely different positions, I just mean in value at 35). I think Lee is VERY underrated due to playing in a wildly inept offense this year...kid is crazy talented and would make a killer pair with Gordon. However, I have no idea what your line is looking like and regardless of the passing game, you will need a running game to go with it and Su'a-Filo is a great run blocker.

I would say guard and follow the Saint's model. I've read that pressure up the middle is especially hard on shorter qbs because they have a hard time seeing over guards, especially as they are being pushed into the qb. Taller qbs can still see over the pressure in the middle while the shorter guys have to move to create the sight line. Thats why the saints have spent big money on their guards and tried to make them very good. As long as there isn't pressure up the middle, the tackles only need to push their rushers out and brees can step up and deliver the ball on time. There's no evidence that Manziel can do that, but Manziel running forward to escape the pocket is always better than him running backwards and around pressure up the middle. I take Su'a-Filo in a heartbeat. And a running game would be good for a young qb and for when Cleveland's weather becomes...Cleveland's.

I think there's an article that explains this in more depth, but here's something: http://mmqb.si.com/2014/03/12/jimmy-graham-new-orleans-saints-free-agency/

Good breakdown and honestly, you could probably still get a pretty decent WR in the 3rd.

So unless you guys would rather piss and moan all day again because you don't like that we picked arguably one the most electrifying players in the draft, who do you guys want in rd 2 (35) and rd 3 (75?)
Your act is getting old. Kind of makes sense why you like Manziel so much now.

And to piggy-back, Tampa just gave McCown a pretty decent contract...tough to take a first round QB when you just shelled out the money to get McCown. As for Tennessee, they've got to get weapons for Locker to say that they gave him an honest shot at being the guy there. Oakland was realistic but they are so bad in so many areas, I think they (correctly) saw Mack as the safest pick to help them immediately in a spot of dire need. As for Houston? I honestly thought they would have been wiser to trade back to Atlanta and then take Manziel...I think Clowney is a bad fit for their defense (I think he is lazy and will only have flashes in his career of greatness) and DE is not a position of need. Is he the most talented player in the draft? Absolutely. But they have absolutely zero options at QB and I just think waiting until the 2nd round was a terrible idea. In all likelihood, we get to see the name Carr get reincarnated in Houston...it will be entertaining as hell I guess, but that's a TON of pressure to put on the kid.
