2014 NFL (Well, Browns, so, sorta "NFL") Draft Thread

2. Gave up #26 and their second 3rd round pick to move up 4 spots to pick Johnny Football. Honestly, I did not see Philly, KC, Cincy, or SD selecting JM. Why give up a 3rd pick to move 4 slots for a guy, again that would have been available at 26? Knee jerk move? Maybe. Regardless, if JM learns, plays smarter and stays healthy, this will be a great pick. Talent is not a question here, it's durability. I will give this pick a B.

They thought there was a chance he wouldn't be available at #26. They thought there was a (strong?) possibility of another team trading with Philly, KC, Cincy, or SD to jump up and get him ahead of the Browns.

That same thinking lead to Trent "3.4" Richardson... Browns out thought themselves.

Re: Manziel experienced one of those agonizing quarterback free falls on national T.V., tumbling to No. 22 after some folks projected him to go as high as No. 2 of No. 3. He's the third No. 22 quarterback picked by the Browns in the new era, following in the footsteps of Brady Quinn and Brandon Weeden.

Anybody believe in the old adage that the...

I sat back and watched a ton of people salivate over Brady Quinn too, people were super pumped about McCoy. Hell I saw Brown's fans super pleased about getting Weeden. From early appearance Manziel has gotten a lot more hate than any of the forementioned... and a lot of it is biased bc they don't like his personality. People are usually cocky bc they are good and they know it, they are confident in their abilities and they will work their ass off to do well. That is even more reason to like JF in my mind.
Yep, sure was the case with Andre Rison when he came here...oh wait, you weren't even born yet.

I agree that at times boneheaded choices are made, but we don't always know the circumstances. I mean for all we know the Denver owner could have force Tebow down their throats due to his popularity and filling seats/buzz of tebow and Denver. Heck for all we know Haslam coulda doone that for JF and CLE

Which is exactly why owners should stay the hell out of personnel decisions. They focus on the business aspect. Bravo to Haslam, as a business decision he's created buzz around Cleveland. Those types of decisions however, are short sighted and don't help the football aspect. Mr Foosball will generated a lot of media attention and merch revenue for the next year or so. The product on the field won't match that hype. Then the disappointment and ultimate crash similar to a bad relationship ending will soon follow.

All said and done, in time this pick will show through as a terrible idea.

Johnny could have been there in the middle round 2. It was clear nobody was going to take a flyer on him in the first. Yet, the Browns move up to get him in the first.

Ideally, they could have moved down from 26 to a late first or early second and picked up another pick on day 2. Get either a receiver or OL with the late first or early second pick and then shore up the ILB and QB positions. I actually wouldn't have had an issue with Johnny Manziel in the middle of the second round. That move last night reeked of desperation. I just can't believe that a franchise can have so many issues finding a decent QB. I think it's safe to say that Browns fans just want a decent QB that can makes some plays and doesn't make stupid mistakes. I don't think it's too much to ask for. But yes, I understand it is the Browns we are talking about. We'll have to see if Johnny is that QB but I am highly dubious of that. My confidence in Ray Farmer was completely lost last night.

Wasnt that many teams who needed a qb. Try again. How cute that you call out the qb's they missed on but not the ones that they hit the nail on the head with. Once again, Ill take the word from those guys over anyone on here.
How cute that you focus on ones the hit but ignore the ones they miss because they're supposed "experts". See how that works?

And if you don't think ESPN is feeding Gruden a script to slurp Johnny on draft day for ratings and controversy, you are more ignorant than you sound.

I actually would be interested to see their analysis of Manziel vs. Teddy Bridgewater.
I'm not sure if they had a dance partner, but they likely could have moved back to get one or another.

I'll say this, I am happy they didn't go full Chuck Booms retard and trade up to get the Moneybadger, though I am not going to give them too much credit because they tried to trade up to 12 with Tennessee to get him (I imagine they wanted a first rounder). I don't hate the pick (sorry HB, I don't "hate") simply because Farmer completely hedged his bets on it by trading down...if Johnny Paycheck is a total flameout or explodes on the field, they can take a QB next year and still have a first rounder to address another need. I agree with the analysis a couple of pages ago in that I thought Dennard fit Pettine's scheme a lot better than Gilbert, but I am not at all unhappy about a 2nd legit corner...if he is one. Now id the Guard from UCLA falls to 35, they can address the two weakest spots on the team (CB2 and G) and take a flier on the Moneybadger, with 2 high first rounders next year to get another QB if they need one and still take a playmaker. So, overall, I don't like the pick, and I hated dropping a third to move up...but he absolutely raped Buffalo next year for a guy they won't use properly, so strategy-wise, I think Farmer did a decent job overall.

I have a friend with a really nice shirt press and it attempting to start his own business. Told him to apply for the money badger trademark - or my personal favorite " Haslam's Fault". I'm getting the former for myself.
