2014-2015 B1G Men's Basketball

I want to see a Buckeye win over UW of course, but nothing wrong with looking ahead. I may have been mistaken, it might be a PSU-Nebraska matchup whose winner plays OSU but either way it should be a good warmup game.

I think it's a good time of the year to look at possible HC firings/openings in the B1G.

First category: Ice cold

Bo Ryan - 67 years old and coming off a FF run. Retirement is near and transition to next coach will likely start soon.
Tom Izzo - No chance, but I get the sense Spartan fans are fearful he is losing the team a bit this year.
Thad Matta - Perennially successful coach. Next year will be interesting if (when?) Russell leaves.
Mark Turgeon - Probably the COY in the conference this year. His team made an excellent transition into a new conference and Maryland looks like a great add basketball-wise.
John Beilein - Another respected coach whose team simply suffered a rash of injuries this year.

Second category: Safe, but could see them leaving for a better job

Matt Painter - Purdue fans were ready to fire him last year, but this year definitely saved him.
Fran McCaffery - Kind of like Alford, fans in Iowa were ready to burn his house down after the NW loss.
Chris Collins - Collins will always be here, because when the Duke job opens, I think he has a good shot at it.
John Groce - Illini fans are like Iowa fans in that I'm not sure they're realistic about where they are as a program.
Richard Pitino - IMO he is in over his head, but as an AD you don't fire your reach of a hire two years in.

Third category: Seat is warm and they could leave on their own

Eddie Jordan - This one was tough, having not followed them until this year, don't have a feeling really. I do know the Rutgers administration is pretty apathetic towards the program.
Tim Miles - Miles could be in the "safe and leave for better job category," as getting his team to the tournament last year bought him a few years before the seat is real hot, but to collapse like they have with the same team back isn't an indication he has things going in the right direction.

Fourth category: Seat is really hot

Patrick Chambers - If he isn't let go this year, he will be next year, as I don't see how they compete at all without Newbill. I appreciate his honesty about the officiating in the conference, but you have to wonder if that will factor in as well.
Tom Crean - I know the AD stood behind him yesterday, but Crean has to be sweating. The buyout may save him, but if there wasn't a buyout, he would be fired regardless. People say he walked into a bad situation, which he did, but it is Indiana and he's been there seven years now. How long does it take?

It's not as easy to prognosticate on basketball hirings/firings as it is in football, but I will say there are two openings after the year ends.

I'm always interested in what outsiders think of OSU's program, so I'll ask--what do you mean when you say "next year will be interesting" if Russell leaves? Interesting in that Matta might be on the hot seat if OSU starts losing due to Russell's absence? Or something else?

Unrelated, I don't buy the whole "Beilein was a victim of injuries this season" thinking. Michigan had losses to New Jersey Institute of Technology and Eastern Michigan before the injury bug hit. He wasn't leading that team anywhere this year, injuries or not.

Oh, no way. I meant "interesting" in that I'll be interested to see how Matta replaces his production, as it seems like the team's fortunes rest squarely on Russell's shoulders this year. That is my (admittedly dim) view from afar, so I could be way off on that. I have faith that Matta will figure it out though.

I looked in the thesaurus, and could find no mention of the use of "honesty" as a synonym for "whining." So I'm a bit confused here.
Ok, maybe not "honesty" - more like "complete disregard for accepted decorum in postgame pressers." He's said things that some other coaches aren't willing to. Some of the calls made against PSU this year in tight games have been pretty ridiculous.

I personally am a little mystified as to why PSU is so terrible at basketball, and I don't have strong feelings one way or the other about Chambers. I just find it refreshing, to a small degree.
