2012 Defense Discussion

Does our defense not have the schemes down? I'm just looking for some valid reasoning to what happened tonight. I don't want to jump on the fire fickell bandwagon. I'm hoping that the players are still learning the system and maturing... I'm hoping at least

But it's Withers who's coordinating the secondary and the new extremely soft for-the-love-of-god-anything-but-press coverage. It might work in the NFL but it doesn't seem to be working here. Especially not with the tackling [Mark May] show.

Big problem:

2009-10 classes have nine defenders rostered, total. ONE LINEBACKER LEFT.

Would've been great to rotate in McVey, hagan, turner, bell or newsome. Instead, the 'depth' is five true freshmen, a recovering Crowell and Curtis grant. It isn't that bino/shazier/storm are subpar, but all three have missed time with no one around to step in.

Exactly. The hand our D staff has been handed has been awful and if we follow the attrition you have laid out, we cannot truly complain about this season. It will get better but not this season likely...

D-line needs to do a better job occupying blockers on run plays. We need to bring more pressure with the linebackers because the front four isn't doing it on their own. And for the love of God, stop giving the wrs a ten yard cushion! Boren playing linebacker says a lot about how the coaches feel about C. Grant, C. Crowell and the frshmen linebackers. Pretty embarassing. But we are 7-0 and we have 5 weeks to right the ship. Go Bucks!

No pressure on the qb. Ever....Clearly the front 4 can't put pressure on the qb, yet I don't know if we had more then 2 blitz's tonight.

Agreed on the pressure.

With that said, a corner blitz ended up with Shane Wynn scoring on a 76 yard pass play to the side they were blitzing from.

There are no easy fixes for this defense.

IMHO our LBs aren't fast enough to cover receivers. Carpenter and Lauranaitis were exceptional in pass coverage.

You'd have a hard time convincing me that Lauranaitis and Carpenter were faster than Shazier and Sabino. I think it is more a problem of positioning and angles. As in, our linebackers are constantly out of position and regularly take poor angles when tackling.

OK. I think we were somewhat shocked but pleased when Urban retained Fickell and Vrabel. We wanted it to work, Urban and Luke wanted it to work, most players wanted it to work(except some LB's left the program). It hasn't no one is saying someone can't coach just that the marriage between old and new has become dysfunctional. Maybe Urban sitting in on D can help right the ship. If he cannot I am sure LF knows what has to be done.
