2012 Defense Discussion

Would he go back to being a DC after coaching a school like Nebraska? I'd have to doubt it and I don't think he's going anywhere after just this year, although he will probably be let go eventually.

The defense is a mess right now. I don't know if the philosophies of Fickell and Withers aren't mixing and the poor depth is just exaggerating the problems, but I can't imagine two highly touted DCs have suddenly lost their minds in one season.

I don't think cleaning house in the off season will make as big of a difference as some think. OSU will still have poor depth at LB and mostly new, young DL players who are still going to be learning and developing. It's a risk to keep them I know, but I'm weary of replacing 3-4 position coaches and coordinators right before two huge seasons in 2013 & 2014. I'm just not a big fan one-and-done coaches because if you don't find the right coordinator next season you run the risk of going through 3-4 guys in a short period of time and cannot build your program around anything.

Luke has been a trainwreck since he took a leadership role last year. He's just not cut out for it.....he's all Buckeye but just not a leader. Perhaps his future really is at being a DL coach. But I'm not even sure about that.

I'm all for finding the best available DC out there and making the change in late November or early December.

It's a blend of some new things and a lot of the old defense we've always had so I'm not buying that we're learning a new system and thats what's causing this. Infact I'd be surprised if this defense is more than 20% new compared to last years principles.

I don't think Urban is just going to sit by and accept that this was a year of learning the defense. If they don't do something, anything, in the next 5 games I would not be surprised if some staffing changes are made sometime in Late December.

Serious question for you guys. If there is someone like Gene Chizik who gets fired at Auburn (odds are he will be) don't you guys think that's going to be hard for Urban to pass up if there's mutual interest?

I find the posts here very interesting and agree with quite a few of them. I find it interesting that at the beginning of the season both the O line and LB were concerns. That being said, it is amazing to see where the O line has come and the LB unit has regressed as a whole. Coach Warriner has worked wonders with the O Line. I think we can all argue that the O Line has been very good this season. You can get good consistent play out of a decent unit (we see it every week in college football with many different teams). Why we don't see it out of the LB's and other positions on the D is baffling. Very troubling.

I guess what I don't understand is why we constantly rush only 4, or sometimes 3, guys almost every down. The only time yesterday that I can remember us sending more than 4 guys was in the 4th quarter on a 4th down and 6. I think we sent 2 guys up the middle but the pass was still completed to Indiana's tight end and Meyer was mad as hell. I don't see our LB's even acting like they are going to blitz during the game. You would think that they could at least jump into the line of scrimmage and get back into pass coverage or have one of the guys come down on one of the defensive linemen drop back into zone coverage.

It's the same old thing game after game. We only rush 4 guys and don't even pretend like we are going to blitz yet alone send more than 4 guys. No wonder the defensive linemen are exhausted.

I don't know if Withers and Fickell and Vrable are on the same page are not but Urban is the head coach and if they are not on the same page he needs to get them on the same page.

I guess the only thing good is that we probably will not see another offense like Indiana's until next season. I am sure that Purdue and Illinois will try but they just don't have the personnel to run that type of offense.

It will be interesting to see if any coaching changes are made at the end of the season because I think if Luke was shown the door MV would go with him and I have no idea about Withers.

Its ironic to me that chizik is seen as some as being a more realistic DC than pelini. He just won an NC a few years ago. I wouldn't see him taking a coordinator role anywhere. I think he'll honestly be given more time at auburn, especially with the recruiting class he's set to bring in. Bringing in new coaches would just set the already young defensive players back more, trying to learn a new system. I think Meyer will retain who he has, and I think the players will continue to mature and fit into this defense. Especially the young pups.

I'm sure it's been said already in this thread, but, people are getting fired at the end of the year.

Yes. Firing your defensive staff and implementing new coaching and systems will be much easier.

If anyone is interested in talking about the good things of this defense, here's some bright spots:

- Roby is tied for #1 nationally with 14 passes defended. He's also #2 for passes broken up with 12.

- Howard is top 15 nationally with 3 INTs (leader has 6).

- Ryan Shazier is top 20 nationally in total tackles with 64

- OSU Defense is #8 nationally in total INTs and #13 in sack yardage (meaning we get the most out of our sacks).

The ten yard cushion given by the CBs on 3rd and 5ish needs to not happen. Might as well just hand the opposition a first down.

That is on Coombs. In one part of the ESPNU show you see him telling the backs this. Basically give the receiver space but not YAC. If this is Withers and Fickell telling Coombs this, I don't know. You would have to see what Coombs' DBs did at UC.

Not easy, but necessary. We just gave up 49 points to Indiana. The defense hasn't gotten any better as the season progresses, if fact, they've gotten worse. That's a coaching problem.

Not just Coombs.

Withers Adds Aggressive Touch

?I don't know if there's anything different than what's been in the past. We've done a few things coverage wise to help us with some adjustments,? said Withers, who also serves as Meyer?s assistant head coach.

?But we're not changing to a bump and run, press man, one high defense. We're still going to play the base defense. There will be a few technique and fundamental things that we've changed a little.?

One major change for the defense this year is a decision to play the cornerbacks further from the line of scrimmage. The coaches felt Ohio State?s corners were limited in their ability to make plays on the ball last season because they were forced to play so much press coverage.
