2012 Defense Discussion

vs UNL, there were none either. Huh. Maybe Braxton should stop scoring so quick?

1:37 OSU 15 3 3 Punt
1:20 OSU 30 3 -5 Punt
2:29 OSU 25 3 0 Punt
1:20 OSU 22 4 9 Turnover on Downs

UAB. One, and it was exactly 5:00 minutes, however something is clearly screwey in ESPNs drive charting for the 3rd Q, so this probably isn't accurate:

0:44 OSU 32 3 7 Punt
3:55 OSU 14 7 29 Punt
1:44 OSU 38 3 1 Punt
3:56 UAB 44 10 75 Rushing Touchdown

0:00 OSU 25 3 -1 Punt
5:00 OSU 29 10 71 Rushing Touchdown

Cal. None. In fact. There were no 4:00 minutes drives, and only two over 3:00.

0:49 OSU 39 3 61 Rushing Touchdown

UCF. Two.

3:51 OSU 12 8 35 Turnover on Downs
5:14 OSU 26 13 67 Field Goal Good

To be honest starting from scratch personnel and coaching a like may actually be what we need. Right now we all have opinions on who really is at fault for how poor we are on defense. I am in the field that says the coaches need to go but honestly some fresh talent may also help going forward into 2013'

Personally I'm excited to see the speed that Jamal Marcus/David Perkins bring to the table next year, and i'm excited to see what the young defensive line can accomplish. I want to thank all of the seniors on defense in advance but in saying that losing that many players (potentially) from a bottom ranked defense may not be a bad thing.

There's never a GOOD time to replace a coordinator but when you're looking at a National Championship run in 2013' due to how dangerous the offense should be we better have something to offer on defense as well. If the current staff can't put up respectable numbers with a veteran group then WTF is going to happen when they have a green group? Won't be good I'll tell you that much.

As for the person who said "i'm glad I don't have a job working for any of you". I'm glad you don't work for me too because I'd be unhappy if I had to do your job for you (Meyer now working with the defense).

I agree with that fresh talent for 2013 will make a world of difference. I have nothing but respect for the 2011-12 starters learning a new system this past offseason, but part of their struggles (I believe) is having to unlearn their earlier tutoring.

The freshmen and c/o 2013 are being brought in specifically because the brain trust thinks they can play under the system that will be in place for multiple seasons. Of course the freshmen are just that, and people expect them to be the next Freshman of the Year and slide into the starting lineup. That's incredibly rare at a school like Ohio State.

In short, I think it may be personnel rather than coaching. Calling them square pegs in round holes is not demeaning to them.

I started this in the Luke Fickel thread, probably better to put it here.

Trying to figure out how decimated we are on defense.

I don't know the answer to this question so maybe someone who knows the inner workings of a coaching staff can answer it but how do "co-coordinators" work:huh:

I mean which one would have the responsibility for dictating the offense or defense for a specific game and which one would be calling the plays/formations during the game. If the philosophies of two guys are different who makes the call:huh: This is just not specific to Ohio State put on any football team I can't see how you can have co-coordinators because someone has to make that ultimate decision and it cannot be the head coach during a game because there isn't enough time between plays to run a decision by the HC.

It just seems awfully confusing to me and I have never heard of it on a professional level.

My understanding is Withers helps with gameplans and probably talks with Fickell during the game, but Fickell calls the plays. Those plays do not go through Coach Meyer. However, starting this week, Coach Meyer is going to be a little more involved with the Defense at practices.

There is a LB on that list that is neither in bold or italics who is seriously underperforming. This couldn't come at a worse time.

Meyer stated last week that he also would like to see more press coverage, not exactly those words, so I don't know how much it is going to mean by him becoming more involved in practice this week.

For example, it has been stated this is the first week Coach Meyer has attended Defensive meetings.
