2010 tOSU Recruiting Discussion

I remember someone saying once that as soon as a walk-on plays in an actual game, they lose the walk-on status and must be put on scholarship. I can't remember if that was refuted or not.

You may be thinking of players who get a scholarship to play a different sport but walk-on to the football team (Ross Oltorik, for instance). They are considered football walk-ons until the moment they play in a game, but as soon as they enter the game, they count against the football scholarship limit because its the higher revenue sport.

And just who have to "talked to"? While it did indeed look pretty bleak for us for a while, his stated desire for early enrollment along with the way Texas' and Ohio State's class schedules are set up and his delay in announcing his choice, points to us being a serious player again.

So, when you say, "He's not coming here", instead of, "I seriously doubt he's coming here", it implies you know something which in reality you don't...
There's an insider on scout (non-OSU) with "bonafides" that has heard some very positive things for tOSU in the past day or two as well.

I think what RB07 is referring to is a player who took an official visit and then enrolls as a walk on and eventually plays in a game during his first two years is guaranteed a scholarship...I believe RB07 is right as it pertained to Thoma's situation...he was told he would be brought in as a preferred walk-on and would be put on scholarship only if he won the starting punting job.

Found it in an article by Steve Helwagen when he was out Scout.

By having Thoma make an official visit, Ohio State, by rule, must put him on scholarship the moment he plays in his first two years on campus.

Bauserman was to have his schooling paid for by the Pirates organization, yet he is now on a football scholarship at tOSU.
I would think that was a decision by the Pirates and not by MLB. I believe that Barclay's schooling is part of an agreement with the MLS not a specific team. That is my interpretation.

Which could very well trump what I've heard, because the info isn't exactly brand new. JT does have the last in-home, so that could pay off. If we pull it off somehow, it would be a huge upset, one that I hope happens with all the misfortune of '10.

Just want to try throw out a little perspective regarding this class and how it looks on paper right now. If you are someone who goes strictly by how the services rate the kids and how many stars they give them, this class looks rather mediocre, especially when compared to the haul from the previous two years. I know this has been rehashed before, but I'd like to do so again. Scout/Rivals are not the end all be all.

Here is an example using our 2005 class.

These were our 4 star or better recruits on Rivals including their Rivals Rating:

Alex Boone, 5 stars, 6.1
Jamario O'Neal, 4 stars, 6.0
Jim Cordle, 4 stars, 5.9
Doug Worthington, 4 stars, 5.9
Andre Amos, 4 stars, 5.8
Todd Denlinger, 4 stars, 5.8
Rob Schoenhoft, 4 stars, 5.8
Maurice Wells, 4 stars, 5.8
Ryan Williams, 4 stars, 5.8
Lawrence Wilson, 4 stars, 5.8

Here are our 3 star or lower recruits on Rivals including their Rivals Rating:

Brian Hartline, 3 stars, 5.7
Freddie Lenix, 3 stars, 5.7
Malcolm Jenkins, 3 stars, 5.5
James Laurinaitis, 3 stars, 5.5
Brian Robiskie, 3 stars, 5.5
Austin Spitler, 3 stars, 5.5
Anderson Russell, 2 stars, 5.3
Donald Washington, 2 stars, 5.2

Of the "good" group, Boone was four year starter for us who never quite realized his full potential and was beset by personal issues. O'Neal saw some PT at safety and was never anything special. Cordle has been solid on the line for the past 3 years. Worthington was also a 3 years starter who really came into his own this year. Amos was beset by injury problems and barely played. Denlinger was a nice lineman to have in the rotation. Schoenhoft barely played and transfered. Mo Wells provided us with an expected but uncommon treat as he committed to OSU at the Army AA game. We then bemoaned "Mo up the middle" for the next four years. Ryan Williams never played and left the program. Wilson was a nice player who suffered from injury problems. NFL wise, I think Worthington will be drafted and maybe Cordle will get a chance somewhere. Boone had NFL talent but his personal issues ruined his chance. I don't see much NFL potential out of the rest of that group (3/10).

Of the "bleh" group, Hartline had a strong 2007 season. His 2008 season saw his production dip due to our QB issues. He left early, was drafted in the 4th round and is now starting for the Dolphins. Lenix had academic issues and never made it to school. Jenkins saw significant PT as a freshman, would start the next 3 years, winning the Thorpe award as the nation's best DB as senior. First round draft choice. Laurinaitis was a three year starter, and won several national awards. Second round draft choice, led the Rams in tackles. Robiskie saw significant PT from 06-08, including a monster 2007 season. Like Hartline, his productivity dipped as a senior due to our QB problems. Second round draft choice. Spitler saw himself stuck behind good players for most of his tenure, but started his season and did a nice job. Russell was a 4 year starter (frosh year cut short due to injury) who will be a late round draft choice per the pundits. Washington was a starter at CB, came out early, and was a 4th round draft choice. NFLers in this group: 6/8 (6/7 if you don't count Lenix who never set foot on campus).

So just because Brad Roby is a 3 star 5.6 and Latwan Anderson is a 5 star 6.1 doesn't necessarily mean their careers are going to follow some Rivals predestined path.

I don't think ALL of Bauserman's schooling was paid for. Most was paid for by the Pirates organization, but making him a full scholaship player makes sure it is all paid for. Same thing for former DB Antonio "Yao" Smith. He was on partial scholarship for academics and got put on full-scholarship for football to pay for all of his schooling.

AKAK is correct, Barclay was a "Pro 40" player (now "Generation Adidas"), which should mean that all of his schooling is paid for by MLS. We haven't heard anything concrete either way from the coaching staff regarding Barclay's scholarship situation, but the coaches DID say that they were expecting to take 20 recruits for the 2010 recruiting class, so I'd take that latter info to the bank.

There was quite a lengthy debate in the Bauserman forum when Joe was given a scholarship by Tressell. This happened during a time when many believed it ought to be used for the 2009 incoming recruiting class.

In short, DaddyBB and Max Buck contend that Bauserman's schooling was fully financed by the Pirates organization, however he was not privileged to eat at the training table or receive some other team privileges unless he paid for them personally.
When Tressell put Joe on scholarship it was the "fair thing" to do for one who had earned the backup QB position passing Henton and Schoenhoft.
I would assume that Barclay is in the same situation, his schooling is paid for by MSL, but training table and team privileges are probably not covered.

With OSU offering Dominique Brown and Roby signing.... who are the odd ones out of James/Hicks/Henderson/Bryant? How many schollies left? 2?

IMO, we can fit up to 22, depending on who wants to join, we can make room. I don't believe we have seen the last of the offseason attrition.

We probably have a better shot at Anderson switching over to us (possibly at Christian Bryant's press conference on Jan 26th?), than I think we will at Matt James after he takes the rest of his visits.

DB Christian Bryant
ATH Dominique Brown
OL Seantrel Henderson
LB Jordan Hicks
DB Latwan Anderson

This would be who I imagine we have a REAL shot at ending with. We'll see, but if these guys want in I think we make room.

Would you rather have Brown than Anderson, or are you just saying what you think we'll end with realistically in your opinion?

IMHO i think this is how it ends up with potentially Hicks as the wild card (its apparently down to Texas and OSU). I think the Anderson ship has sailed. At 6'3 210-215 i like Browns size and athleticism.

Does anyone know if we would still be in contact with Floyd? Is it improper to keep wooing a recruit after they verbally commit elsewhere? (I am sure that many schools would, but we aren't many schools :wink2:) It seems like the circumstances around Floyd's decision would warrant testing the waters to see how decided he really is.
