Just want to try throw out a little perspective regarding this class and how it looks on paper right now. If you are someone who goes strictly by how the services rate the kids and how many stars they give them, this class looks rather mediocre, especially when compared to the haul from the previous two years. I know this has been rehashed before, but I'd like to do so again. Scout/Rivals are not the end all be all.
Here is an example using our 2005 class.
These were our 4 star or better recruits on Rivals including their Rivals Rating:
Alex Boone, 5 stars, 6.1
Jamario O'Neal, 4 stars, 6.0
Jim Cordle, 4 stars, 5.9
Doug Worthington, 4 stars, 5.9
Andre Amos, 4 stars, 5.8
Todd Denlinger, 4 stars, 5.8
Rob Schoenhoft, 4 stars, 5.8
Maurice Wells, 4 stars, 5.8
Ryan Williams, 4 stars, 5.8
Lawrence Wilson, 4 stars, 5.8
Here are our 3 star or lower recruits on Rivals including their Rivals Rating:
Brian Hartline, 3 stars, 5.7
Freddie Lenix, 3 stars, 5.7
Malcolm Jenkins, 3 stars, 5.5
James Laurinaitis, 3 stars, 5.5
Brian Robiskie, 3 stars, 5.5
Austin Spitler, 3 stars, 5.5
Anderson Russell, 2 stars, 5.3
Donald Washington, 2 stars, 5.2
Of the "good" group, Boone was four year starter for us who never quite realized his full potential and was beset by personal issues. O'Neal saw some PT at safety and was never anything special. Cordle has been solid on the line for the past 3 years. Worthington was also a 3 years starter who really came into his own this year. Amos was beset by injury problems and barely played. Denlinger was a nice lineman to have in the rotation. Schoenhoft barely played and transfered. Mo Wells provided us with an expected but uncommon treat as he committed to OSU at the Army AA game. We then bemoaned "Mo up the middle" for the next four years. Ryan Williams never played and left the program. Wilson was a nice player who suffered from injury problems. NFL wise, I think Worthington will be drafted and maybe Cordle will get a chance somewhere. Boone had NFL talent but his personal issues ruined his chance. I don't see much NFL potential out of the rest of that group (3/10).
Of the "bleh" group, Hartline had a strong 2007 season. His 2008 season saw his production dip due to our QB issues. He left early, was drafted in the 4th round and is now starting for the Dolphins. Lenix had academic issues and never made it to school. Jenkins saw significant PT as a freshman, would start the next 3 years, winning the Thorpe award as the nation's best DB as senior. First round draft choice. Laurinaitis was a three year starter, and won several national awards. Second round draft choice, led the Rams in tackles. Robiskie saw significant PT from 06-08, including a monster 2007 season. Like Hartline, his productivity dipped as a senior due to our QB problems. Second round draft choice. Spitler saw himself stuck behind good players for most of his tenure, but started his season and did a nice job. Russell was a 4 year starter (frosh year cut short due to injury) who will be a late round draft choice per the pundits. Washington was a starter at CB, came out early, and was a 4th round draft choice. NFLers in this group: 6/8 (6/7 if you don't count Lenix who never set foot on campus).
So just because Brad Roby is a 3 star 5.6 and Latwan Anderson is a 5 star 6.1 doesn't necessarily mean their careers are going to follow some Rivals predestined path.
