2010 tOSU Recruiting Discussion

I think what RB07 is referring to is a player who took an official visit and then enrolls as a walk on and eventually plays in a game during his first two years is guaranteed a scholarship...I believe RB07 is right as it pertained to Thoma's situation...he was told he would be brought in as a preferred walk-on and would be put on scholarship only if he won the starting punting job.

Found it in an article by Steve Helwagen when he was out Scout.

Quote:
By having Thoma make an official visit, Ohio State, by rule, must put him on scholarship the moment he plays in his first two years on campus.
I've read this quote by Helwagen several times and in several places. But I think he had it wrong; I find nothing in the NCAA rule book to the effect that any student-athlete who has made an official visit "must be put on scholarship" under any circumstances, even if that student becomes a starter on the team. This is, I believe, an urban legend.

Does anyone know if we would still be in contact with Floyd? Is it improper to keep wooing a recruit after they verbally commit elsewhere? (I am sure that many schools would, but we aren't many schools :wink2:) It seems like the circumstances around Floyd's decision would warrant testing the waters to see how decided he really is.

True...what if Tressel had a dream from God that he was supposed to switch to OSU? Personally I think we close with Bryant, Henderson and Brown (though my gut is saying just Brown and Bryant). I would like to see Anderson switch but I'm just wondering if he burned some bridges.

Football: weekend visitors

...
Frazier is a 6-6, 225-pound defensive end who has played only one season of football. Middletown coach Jason Krause said Frazier moved from Maine to live with his father in Ohio. Frazier played soccer, basketball and baseball but showed up in July for offseason football workouts.

"That was the first time I met him," Krause said. "He runs well. He took to football like a fish to water. He stuck his nose right in there. "At the next level, I'm sure he's a pass rush guy. I'm sure he's going to put on weight quickly."

During the team's first practice, Krause knew Frazier was something special. "We knew the first day he put his hand in the dirt that he was a Division I football player," he said. "We didn't know with the timing and how recruiting is if he would have the opportunity to play in the Big Ten. We thought he might end up in the MAC.

"Some of those guys trickle down and slide through to the MAC or Conference USA, just because of the timing. I figured a lot of guys had their commitments. Luckily, some of these big schools have some openings still."

Krause said Frazier would like to major in business and has already researched Purdue's business school. Krause said Frazier plans to visit Michigan State next weekend and is also considering West Virginia.

Opinions about the overall quality of this class seem to hinge on the success of tOSU landing some top recruits on Feb. 3. To what extent is the sky falling if the Bucks do not secure letters from any of the top three or four players on the board?

I think we still end up with a solid class even if we don't land those guys. We need at least one more quality OL though, preferably two. Signing only one could put us in a similar position, like when we only signed Blankenship and it hurt with depth, especially when injuries occurred along the OL.....

It will be a solid class. No worries. Could become better than solid if the stars(5 stars) fall into place.
I think James doesn't pick us, he's just waiting to be sure ND will work for him.
And we may lose Louis, another guy who probably really wants to go to Florida and just needs convinced by Meyer. Wonder if they are slow playing him........again?(lack of a scholarship available?)
Hicks? Who knows.
But I'm all in on Henderson coming here. His family aren't happy with all the BS going on at SC and Florida.(who could blame them?) Henderson would be huge(pun intended) for our offensive line for this year. He would elevate the line and offense to elite level.

Big Ten team recruiting needs
January, 20, 2010 Jan 2011:43AM ET
By Adam Rittenberg

OHIO STATE
Safety: This is one of few spots where Ohio State loses two long-time contributors in Kurt Coleman, a first-team All-Big Ten selection, and Anderson Russell. Though Jermale Hines played a lot in 2009, the Buckeyes want to build depth around him.

Wide receiver: If the Buckeyes' offense builds off of its Rose Bowl performance, the wideouts figure to be more involved. Ohio State should be fine for 2010 with DeVier Posey and Dane Sanzenbacher, but it could lose both after the season and needs to start grooming replacements. These recruits also could help the return game, where Ohio State loses Ray Small and Lamaar Thomas.

Recruits' rejections can hurt
Coaches lose more than just a player when a prospect chooses to sign elsewhere
Thursday, January 21, 2010 3:18 AM

Ohio State coaches have put their heart and soul into luring linebacker Jordan Hicks of West Chester, Ohio.

Ohio State is one of several top programs who are in the running for offensive lineman Seantrel Henderson of St. Paul, Minn. He is expected to announce his decision Feb. 3.

It's less than two weeks from the first day that national letters of intent may be signed, and the heat is being turned up on college football recruiters to seal the remaining big deals.

Take, for example, the pursuit of linebacker Jordan Hicks of West Chester, Ohio. Florida, Texas and Ohio State are tugging at him as if he were an old Stretch Armstrong doll. He's the type of player that analysts say could not only elevate a class but perhaps push a program to the national heights.

...
Ohio State coaches think they are that close to several remaining big-time prospects this year, including offensive lineman Seantrel Henderson of St. Paul, Minn. But so are other schools in the running, including Southern California, Notre Dame, Miami, Florida and Oklahoma. Henderson has said he'll announce his decision on signing day.

Buckeyes? recruiting not up to normal standards
By Doug Harris, Staff Writer
12:15 AM Thursday, January 21, 2010

I just saw a story in these pages where Ohio State?s recruiting in football has taken an uncharacteristic dip.

Accustomed to locking up top-10 classes almost every year, the Buckeyes? current group is rated only 22nd nationally by Rivals.com, behind Big Ten arch-nemeses Michigan (19th) and Penn State (9th) and other programs with much lower profiles such as Stanford (18th), Missouri (14th) and Texas A&M (10th).

That won?t matter next season ? OSU is expected to go into the year as a top-5 team ? or probably even the one after that. But it can?t be good for the long haul.

Recruiting Rundown: Two Weeks to Signing Day
By Brandon Castel

...
After putting together back-to-back highly-rated classes in 2008 and 2009, the Buckeyes appear to be having a down year in recruiting in 2010, at least according to the latest team rankings. Following two top-five classes the last two years, OSU?s current class has fallen out of the top 15, at least according to the two major sites.

Scout.com currently has the Buckeyes tied with Stanford for the No. 17 class in the nation, which is good for third in the Big Ten behind Penn State (6) and Michigan (9). Rivals.com also has Ohio State as the third best class in the Big Ten, but they have them five spots lower at No. 22. They also have PSU three spots lower and No. 9 and Michigan 10 spots lower at No. 19.

Meh....disappointing is in the eye of the beholder. It's still a top 10 class in terms of average star ranking and will be top 5 with Henderson, Bryant and perhaps Hicks (doubtful). To add to that, they are in on one of the best OL in last years class.

I agree. I really like the prospect of landing Morgan Moses. Moses and Henderson would be a tremendous haul if the staff can pull it off.
