2010 tOSU Recruiting Discussion

I didn't even include Moore (since the discussion was about depth if he moved) or Baldwin (who hasn't verballed yet). I'm certainly not counting Moore out though, he's maturing well.

There is so much talent in that group, but statistically someone has to get buried by default or otherwise. Nothing against any of these guys, but someone is going to want more playing time and the best way may be the switch to TE. The LB group is equally as talented and the same applies there, albeit some might end up at FB. Either way, the more I think about it, the more I think Jax hit the nail on the head. The staff will find a way to fill the spots with the guys we bring in.

I don't think anyone was actually trying to make the point that we're recruiting guys like Moore and Baldwin to eventually move over to TE or FB their Freshman year, it seems like these types of scenarios are more prevalent with older players who are buried on the depth chart. But, I agree it doesn't hurt to have too much depth on the DL and in the LB corps, it even saves us from having to recruit FB's or TE's for a sheer numbers concern.

But don't u all think that a number of these guys won't stay at DE but could bulk up to DT? With our lack of pressure from the front 4 we need to bring in as much talent as we can. I rather see some of these kids utilized at the DL and get some time then move to TE. DL pressure would be the difference in us having at least 1 more NC, IMO.

I don't think we've seen a case, nor will we see a case of a guy who has the opportunity to get meaningful playingtime, or even second string playing time move to the other side of the ball.

My fault I just read your posts, and I do agree. And I see what u mean, but wasn't Terry getting significant PT at LB and they still wanted to move him to FB? I'd just rather us bolster our DL than worry about moving some talent to offense. That seems like the weakest part of our defense as of late.

Big Speed means LB's as well. I'm just theorizing but it seems to me there are always going to be kids who aren't getting any PT at their positions, who aren't going to transfer, who are good enough athletes to switch positions (all of them are at this level) and who want the PT.

This is one of those inefficency of the market areas imo. Some schools will over value these spots and allocate too many of their limited resources towards it. I think JT sees more value in kickers and allocates his resources there while saving in the TE/FB/Hback area.

I'm not saying he doesn't want a stud TE or anything, just that he places less value on that position and more on kickers than a lot of other coaches do. If a stud TE comes along and OSU has a reasonable chance at recruiting him then obviously they will but in the years when the stars don't align for TE I don't think he loses any sleep over it.

Terry was buried on the depth chart with Laurinaitis, Freeman, Homan in front of him among others. Besides we never actually went through with the transisition. The staff tried it out but switched him back to D.

Don't forget about Tressel and the Buckeyes - ESPN

Monday, July 20, 2009

Posted by Bill Kurelic

Penn State coach Joe Paterno has assembled an impressive group of 13 verbal commitments. Rich Rodriguez also has one of the top recruiting classes in the Big Ten.

But don't forget about Jim Tressel and the Ohio State Buckeyes. The past two seasons Tressel has signed the top recruiting class in the Big Ten, and the man with the sweater vest is quietly on his way towards signing another very talented class.

In recent weeks, Tressel has landed commitments from one of the Midwest's top running backs -- Roderick Smith (Ft. Wayne, Ind./Harding), the top kicker in the state of Ohio -- Drew Basil (Chillicothe, Ohio) and a talented quarterback in Taylor Graham (Wheaton, Ill./North).

On Sunday, Tressel added a commitment from ESPNU 150 Watch List defensive end Darryl Baldwin (Solon, Ohio). Penn State, Michigan State, Notre Dame, Michigan and many others were also in the mix for Baldwin.

Tressel now has nine verbal commitments, including five ESPNU 150 Watch List prospects and four of the top six prospects in the state of Ohio.

However, Tressel could still land several outstanding uncommitted prospects from the state of Ohio, including Under Armour All-American linebacker Jordan Hicks (West Chester, Ohio/Lakota West) and ESPNU 150 Watch List offensive lineman Matt James (Cincinnati, Ohio/St. Xavier).

The Buckeye boss could also land a number of top uncommitted prospects from outside the state of Ohio. Without a lot of fan fare, Tressel is assembling another outstanding class -- one that will likely be a top-20 class nationally.

This recruiting class is really starting to come together . I think if you add a couple more players this could be a really good class . I'm thinking if you add

1. Spencer Ware
2. Erick Howard ( no offer yet )
For RB's
3. Tyrone Williams
at WR
4. Matt James
to round out the O-Line
5.Laken Tomlinson
at DT
6.Jordan Hicks
goes without saying
7. Christian Bryant
8. Lamarcus Joyner
9. Latwan Anderson
these 3 for either Safety or CB the rivals and scout have them mixed
10. Will Hagerup
Punter

That will give us 19 Scholies for 09 and it would be a great class , imo .

if all of these are completely realistic shots then i will be more than satisfied with the years class.

I don't see us landing Tomlinson or James, plus I don't see Howard getting an offer, even with a 37 ACT.

Side note, I was just thinking about all the rankings and what I would personally rank our commits, as opposed to other posters, since I haven't really evaluated (or seen anyone else evaluate) the commits we actually have. I would be interested to see how wad, jwins, cb40, etc would rank them...my list as I would rank them:
1. Andrew Norwell: 5*, top 10 player in the country and top player in Ohio. I would only have Henderson over Norwell nationally.
2. Jamel Turner: 5*, top 30 player in the country and #3 player in Ohio behind Hicks. I would only put Luc and Hicks over Turner at LB.
3. Roderick Smith 4*, top 50 player in the country and #1 player in Indiana (I'm not that impressed with Hurst). I think Dyer, Seastrunk, and Lattimore are better players at this point, but Smith might be a better prospect.
4. Scott McVey 4*, top 100 player in the country and top 10 player in the state. He may not be a combine animal but he is a field animal and flat out produces. I would say he is a top 10 OLB or MLB nationally...wayyyyy underated by the services and I mean wayyyyyy.
5. Darryl Baldwin 4*, top 350 player in the country and top 15 player in the state. Honestly he would be way higher with a better junior campaign. He is a borderline 3/4* guy as is and needs a good senior year to climb. However, his potential warrants a 4* rating imo.
6. Taylor Graham 3*, top 25 QB in the country. Really tough to read, as most of the hype is hear say since he was hurt most of last year. Regardless, I am really excited to see how he plays this year and his limited film showed a strong arm and good size.
7. David Durham 3*, top 50 DE in the country.Really hard nosed kid who I see being a strong role player in the DL rotation. I'm a tad surprised we offered as early as we did but still pleased with the commitment.
8. JT Moore 3*, top 100 DE in the country. This is the only kid I haven't drank the kool-aid on at all. I don't want to really run a recruit down but I just see him getting burried at DE and being moved to TE and/or FB ala Brandon Smith. I was and still am shocked we offered as early as we did.
9. Drew Basil 2*, no clue where he ranks with kickers. I'll be honest, no idea what we have here but with the staffs success in the kicking game, I trust he is top notch.

- As it stands, I see the current commits being top heavy, with a fairly big dropoff after McVey. With legit shots at Henderson, Hicks, Anderson, Bryant and Joyner, this class still has the potential to be great...however, we are going to need everything to go right to land another top 10 class nationally.

On another side note, I thought of the possibility of having Henderson at LT with Norwell at RT and boy would that be ideal. I think Norwell is best suited as a dominating run blocker RT, with good but not excellent pass blocking skills. Obviously Henderson is the ideal LT...add that to Adams and Shugarts...scary. Plus it would allow us to try Linsley out at DT, and move two of Longo, Hall and Mewhort inside, preferably Hall and Mewhort, as I see Longo's skills best suited at tackle. Anyways, I'll stop dreaming now. :)

Mayfield's Wetzel plans on OSU baseball scholarship - cleveland.com

Tim Warsinskey, Plain Dealer Reporter, July 15, 2009 7:22 p.m.

CLEVELAND, Ohio - Before he became a highly recruited baseball player, Mayfield's Tim Wetzel always wanted to attend Ohio State. When the Buckeyes recently offered him a scholarship, it made for an easy decision.
"Ohio State was the best fit for me academically, and so was the whole school because I have two siblings there [Rob and Christina]," Wetzel said. "I always wanted to go to the school even if I wasn't playing a sport."

Wetzel, a senior this fall, has made an oral commitment to play baseball at OSU. A center fielder who bats and throws left-handed, Wetzel hit .412 with 26 RBI in 22 games this year, and was 28-of-29 stealing bases. He hit a school-record six triples.

Wetzel said he considered Kent, Dayton and St. Bonaventure. He also is a standout running back/safety and said OSU coaches gave their blessings for him to play football at Mayfield this fall.

By the emphasis on this statement are you suggesting he is a candidate to take up a football scholarship at OSU?
