2010 tOSU Recruiting Discussion

I'm not so sure that TE is a big need. At the beginning of next season, we will have 3 solid or better (IMO) TEs with none of them older than sophomore eligibility. While I understand Stoney isn't the prototypical TE, we still have Fragel and DiLillo as the bigger types. I'm not saying Alex Smith should or shouldn't be offered, just giving a possible explanation. Also, I don't think it can be ruled out that either JT Moore or Darryl Baldwin won't get a look at TE. We are pretty loaded at DE numberwise, so I wouldn't be shocked if one of them ends up at TE.
There are some (Duane Long especially) that believe Fragel is going to be an OT when he arrives on campus.

yeah, Fragel is likely gonna go the Andy Miller route and wind up as a tackle, he could very well be there when 2010 rolls around. Stoneburner is more of an H-Back in the mold of Travis Beckum, not a true tight end, which really leaves Nic DiLillo as the only true tight end on the roster in 2010, so I would say tight end is a need.

If Fragel does end up at OT, I would say TE is a need. However, it doesn't seem to me like the staff thinks that way. As of now, Fiedorowicz is the only TE with an offer that hasn't committed elsewhere. His recent updates are unencouraging for us to say the least, so it's hard to say for sure what the situation is.

True that, it may not be a big need but it seems the staff wants a TE with the offers out to Fiedoriwicz and Welch. On second thought though, probably not a need, especially considering how little we use a TE.

You are right and I think that is weird. Think about schools that play similar to us. I don't know if you will agree but that list should include Iowa and Wisconsin from Big Ten, Nick Saban led Alabama last year, probably Stoops' Oklahoma etc. TE is an integral part of the offense of all those schools. Perhaps it is the lack of talent since we threw to Hartsock a decent amount but that can't be all.

Am I way off in feeling like JT approaches the Hback/TE/FB position as one that can be filled from within by big speed types who haven't panned out elsewhere and want some PT? I don't see it as ever being a huge position of need for us.

I'll go along with that. With the logjam at positions like DE and LB, something has to give for playing time. You just hope that someone who gets buried in the depth chart goes for position change over transferring. I definitely know what you mean though, you can never be sure of who will end up at TE.

I don't think I can agree with moving Moore or Baldwin from DE, we need as much of a pass rush as possible. And its not like we have a dire need for TEs, but a lack of a pass rush has been one of our biggest weaknesses in the past few years(besides Gholston of course).

I don't think that's the plan at all but we've seen several times in the past with guys stuck on the depth chart on D moving over to O like Stan White and the Curtis Terry FB experiment that we tried for a bit. A lot of these guys were recruited as DE/TE's like Lawrence Wilson (not saying he'll ever play offense just giving an example). Zach Boren and Adam Homan are two guys who we could see on offense or defense as well.

2010 eligibility
Juniors - Williams, Wells, Thomas
Soph/Frosh - Mobley, Newsome, Fellows
True Frosh - Turner, Durham, Moore, Baldwin

Arriving the year after - Steve Miller (Chris Rock?)

If someone ended up buried on the depth chart, I think OSU could certainly afford to move them with the depth they've built up.

Keith Wells will be a Soph next year. Unless he redshirted last year but i'm fairly certain he got limited action

There is so much talent in that group, but statistically someone has to get buried by default or otherwise. Nothing against any of these guys, but someone is going to want more playing time and the best way may be the switch to TE. The LB group is equally as talented and the same applies there, albeit some might end up at FB. Either way, the more I think about it, the more I think Jax hit the nail on the head. The staff will find a way to fill the spots with the guys we bring in.
