Game Thread 2010 Rose Bowl: Ohio State 26 Oregon 17 (Final, 1/01/2010)

The wildcard in all of this is LaGarette Blount. Basically no film on him besides Boise St. and when he went 9 car. for 51 yds and a TD bowling over Beavers late in the Civil War. We know he's got a solid straight right, but I'm curious to see the balance UO will find between the tandem of James and Blount, and the option of Masoli as well.

How does your team feel about facial hair? It's impossible to make a prediction on an outcome without knowing the beard status of the Ducks.

OSU is full of bearded young men, FWIW.

As a public service let me offer my depth chart page which will allow you all to quickly assess the beardedness of the Oregon Ducks (at least the pre-season version).
The chart will pop-up pictures as your mouse rolls over all the names.
Our leader and QB, Masoli, is holding his own in the bearded department.

From the looks of it, the only weakness we can exploit on the offensive line is at left guard.

A metric I am looking for in this game is total number of punts. Field position isn't nearly as important as how many chances do we give the Oregon offense with the ball. They don't care about TOP, just total possessions, because one way or another their possessions won't be long. They will have either scored, turned it over or punted. If/when we have those long 7 minute drives, they need to end in TDs. Too many punts or more than 1 or 2 field goal tries and we're probably in trouble. Simply chewing up the clock then sending out the D isn't enough. The offense has to be effective, opportunistic and efficient, and that means a sound, controlled game from Mr. Pryor.

If you make it punts + turnovers, I definitely agree.

"Efficient" is the best word I can think of to describe what the Buckeyes need to do to win.

I don't think Blount has great speed and I think it will be easier to shut him down than it will be to shut down LaMichael James. Chances are we'll sell out to stop the run, but the quick shifty guys have given us trouble in the past (McKnight, Dufrene). Blount's a good runner, but he's probably as quick as PJ Hill without the vision. At least from what I've seen. I think we'll be able to contain the run RB rushes.

I've passed by the thought that this Rose Bowl is a prelude to next year's NC.

Unfortunately the BCS was a third party to the contract between ESPN and the SEC. The SEC champ is now guaranteed a spot in the NC game.

(The SEC officials were also party to that agreement.)

I"m actually worried more about Blount than James.

James is what? 180? If our Dline is playing very active I can see a large handful of armtackles, especially from the DT's. We have athletic DE's and Linebackers so I"m not too concerned with this sideline to sideline speed - and like I said, I don't think he has the size necessary to consistently run inside with authority on our defense.

That however is where Blount comes in....

Clay is a big back and we shut him down. I'm more worried about James getting the ball in space than Blount running downhill at our DL.

Agreed, Boise State stopped Oregon with Blount better than any team stopped Oregon's Offense with James.
Part of Oregon's improvement over the season is that James seems to be a better fit in the spread than Blount.
Re. tOSU defenses ability to stop power RB vs. have trouble with quick, shifty guys, I like our chances of stopping James or Blount. Masoli may be the wildcard however.
Acc. to the 2009 box scores, the most yardage gained by rushers vs. OSU were by two QBs. . .
1. Dobbs QB of Navy 83 yds total.
2. Gray QB of Minnesota 81 yds (mostly in mop up duty).

After that,
3. Robinson RB of Iowa 74 yds.
4. Teich RB of Navy 61 yards.
5. McKnight RB of USC 60 yds.
6. Clay RB of Wiscy 59 yds.

No other rushers gained more than 50 yards vs. the 2009 defense.
