Game Thread 2010 Rose Bowl: Ohio State 26 Oregon 17 (Final, 1/01/2010)

Thanks for posting the link, Jag. The link through to Trojan Football Analysis' breakdown of Oregon's zone read is worthwhile also. It helps a bit towards understanding how the Ducks put so many yards and points on USC. I'm a lot more confident that our front seven will have the time and coaching to learn their assignments and how to deal with Oregon's wrinkles.

It's going to be interesting to see who Oregon tries to read and tries to block, and if our DL is quick enough to make plays on Masoli before he gets into space.

I'm more and more inclined to thing that he's our main concern moreso than the backs. If he gets going, that opens things up for James and maybe even Blount, though I think James is the better back and greater threat within the context of Oregon's scheme. Blount, ironically, would be almost perfect in our offense.

Apologies if this already got linked somewhere, but I found this article interesting (scroll down to December 4): Smart Football

"During last night?s Oregon victory over Oregon State, the announcers mentioned that Chip Kelly?s squad will vary their zone read by reading defenders besides the backside defensive end ? namely, the defensive tackle or ?three technique? player.
In the ?normal? zone read, the line zone blocks one way while the quarterback reads the backside defender . . ."

Eh not sure I agree with you there... Anytime you have a qb who can scramble, throws for 80% completion rate, and had two great recievers to throw to that's pretty tough.

IMO, it's apples and oranges comparing Oregon to Texas. Oregon runs the ball and Texas Throws it. Neither of those teams 'other' options scare(d) me. Oregon's passing game doesn't concern me that much and Texas' running game didn't concern me last year.

I'd bet we play it much like PSU. I'd compare them to PSU on offense. So so Offensive Line, Mobile Strong QB's (Clark's a better passer IMO), good backs (oregon's are better though), and receivers that are not the greatest.

Like someone on ESPN said if we're going to run into the zone read there's no one better to have running it than Pryor all the way to Jan 1. He can make the correct reads much like Moseli can, and of course is more a threat on his feet (atleast he's faster). Stop Moseli/LaMichael from going nuts and we'll be more than fine. Blount doesn't cocern me he lumbers out there and it honestly was a blessing for Oregon he missed as much time as he did because they got to see why LaMichael is a better option.

It's difficult to read something "new" about this game, so if you're OK with a bit of humor, then Tony Gerdeman's sarcastic rambling offers something different.

For example:

Back here in Ohio, we've heard tell of the "forward pass" and something called the "zone read", but it might as well all be unicorns and fairy tales to us, because we just don't believe any of it. And my fear is that if any of it happened to be even slightly true, then we are surely doomed.

Have they played a defense yet?

Not "one like ours"... a defense. With a pulse. They have no idea what's in store them.

The only unfortunate thing? All the Duck trolls who were here for the Pryor saga now get to fly back.

Which will make the win all that more sweet.

I don't recall the Buckeye's offense running wild against USC's defense, even when the had good field position, but the Duck's sure did. This is a much better team than many on here think.

Sports: Home | "Rose Bowl prep begins today" | The Register-Guard | Eugene, Oregon

After spending the university?s finals week on the road recruiting, Chip Kelly will get back to the task of coaching the Oregon football team this evening.
It?s a task he?s handled exquisitely so far, some have judged.
The No. 7 Ducks begin Rose Bowl practices today, their first of 15 workouts before the New Year?s Day game against No. 8 Ohio State. But even before that game kicks off, some are already considering the coaching job Kelly has done this fall as the best in the country.
Previously named Pac-10 coach of the year, Kelly was named national coach of the year this week by CBSSports.com. The Web site cited his abilities in leading Oregon back from its season-opening loss at Boise State.
Oregon?s first-year head coach is also one of seven finalists for the Eddie Robinson Coach of the Year Award, as determined by the Football Writers Association of America. The other finalists are Mack Brown of Texas, Paul Johnson of Georgia Tech, Gary Patterson of Texas Christian, Chris Petersen of Boise State, Nick Saban of Alabama and Brian Kelly of Cincinnati, who has been named the new coach at Notre Dame.
The Robinson Award winner will be announced and honored Jan. 5. The award is named for the legendary Grambling State coach who won 408 games in Division I.
Today?s practice will be conducted in the evening, allowing coaches time to get settled after a week on the road and players time to complete final exams. The Ducks will practice in their customary morning slot Saturday through Monday, break for two days, then reconvene Thursday for the first of five more practices in Eugene.
Ticket deadline today
The deadline for UO season ticket-holders to purchase Rose Bowl seats is today.
Oregon?s entire allotment of 32,000 tickets is expected to be gone by that point.
Ohio State will put tickets from its allotment on sale to the general public today beginning at 7 a.m. PST. They will be made available at the Web site ohiostatebuckeyes.com.
Ducks get east side
As the Rose Bowl?s home team, Oregon will be on the stadium?s east sideline opposite the press box for the game. That side of the stadium is also the location of Oregon?s ticket allotment.

I remember the wide receivers doing so. I don't remember Pryor finding them very consistently. I'm not sure why you're bringing up the buckeye offense to prove how good they are on offense.

I also remember almost everyone, including New Mexico St, getting to Pryor better than USC did.
but the Duck's sure did. This is a much better team than many on here think.
I think they're a very good offense. I just don't find USC to be their usual brand of measuring stick.
