SEC types talk all the time about taking advantage of the opportunity. Because the league always has superpowers at the top to deal with, those years when everything comes together with the talent, the schedule, and the top teams going through a rebuilding mode, a program like an Ole Miss or a South Carolina has to jump through the window before is slams shut.
Michigan State might be in that sort of do-it-now moment in the Mark Dantonio era. The fourth year head man has done a tremendous job of taking the one-time flakiest of the flaky programs and making it steady and sound, and he did an amazing job of keeping the ship afloat last year when there were some major off-the-field issues and with the suspensions that follow. Now that things have settled down, the program is truly his after taking over for John L. Smith and he has put his stamp on it with a big year. With several big breaks going MSU?s way, the opportunity is there to finally get back to Big Ten title status.
Not everything is perfect for this Spartan team. The secondary hasn?t stopped a forward pass in years, three starters have to be replaced on the offensive front, and there are road trips over the final quarter of the season to Iowa and Penn State, but for any team that can honestly dream about going to Pasadena, and this one can, all the issues can be overcome.
Schedule-wise, there?s no Ohio State, and Wisconsin has to come to East Lansing. The Spartans don?t leave the state of Michigan until October 23rd, and the home slate, assuming Notre Dame is rebuilding and counting the game in Detroit against Florida Atlantic as a home date, is terrific facing just two teams, Wisconsin and Minnesota, who went bowling last year.
What You Need To Know: The Spartan offense would like to be balanced and gave almost equal time to both the running and passing games, but the air attack should be the star. Kirk Cousins has the starting quarterback job all to himself, and he should be in for a great year with a big, fast receiving corps to throw to and a solid line up front. Three starters have to be replaced on the line, but the newcomers are strong and the pass protection, after finishing first in the Big Ten in sacks allowed, will continue the production. Four young, talented backs will form a dangerous rotation with sophomores Larry Caper and Edwin Baker the main options, while former quarterback Keith Nichol has taken over the outside receiver spot and looks the part as the leader of a talented group.
Star of the offense: Junior QB Kirk Cousins
Player who has to step up and be a star: Junior OT Jared McGaha
Unsung star on the rise: Senior C John Stipek
Best pro prospect: Junior OG Joel Foreman
Top three all-star candidates: 1) Foreman, 2) Cousins, 3) TE Charlie Gantt
Strength of the offense: Passing Game, Pass Protection
Weakness of the offense: Consistency, Backup QB Experience
What You Need To Know: The Spartan defense managed to do a great job of getting to the quarterback last year, but it didn?t make a ton of tackles for loss, didn?t take the ball away enough, and got ripped apart by anyone with a passing game finishing last in the Big Ten in pass defense and pass efficiency defense. The secondary is full of great athletes and lots of promise, but the corners have to be far stronger. The defensive front will be solid with all four spots generating pressure with promising depth creating a nice rotation, and everything missed will be cleaned up by Greg Jones and one of the Big Ten?s top linebacking corps. Jones will be on the short list for every all-star honor a defensive player can be up for and will be the leader and star of the strong run defense.
Star of the defense: Senior LB Greg Jones
Player who has to step up and be a star: Senior SS Marcus Hyde
Unsung star on the rise: Sophomore DE Tyler Hoover
Best pro prospect: Jones
Top three all-star candidates: 1) Jones, 2) LB Eric Gordon, 3) DT Jerel Worthy
Strength of the defense: Greg Jones, Sacks
Weakness of the defense: Pass Defense, Takeaways
Game of the Year
Ohio State at Wisconsin, Oct. 16. The Game of the Year will change weekly down the stretch, but this one will be the tone-setter that?ll be the gateway to the rest of the Big Ten season. The Buckeyes still have Penn State to play, along with a trip to Iowa, and there won?t be any margin for error if they lose in Madison. The same pressure is on for the Badgers with a road trip to Iowa the following week in what could be the national spotlight game. Both the Ohio State and Wisconsin could be in the top five when they hook up.
5 Big-Time Players Who Deserve a Bigger Spotlight
1. DE Ryan Kerrigan, Sr. Purdue
2. WR Keith Smith, Sr. Purdue
3. LB Quentin Davie, Jr. Northwestern
4. OT Gabe Carimi, Sr. Wisconsin
5. WR Roy Roundtree, Soph. Michigan
Coach on the Hot Seat
Tim Brewster, Minnesota ? Yeah, yeah, yeah, that guy up in Ann Arbor is under vice-like pressure to produce, but he?ll likely survive another year. Brewster has to be fantastic with a team that has a ton of major issues, and even a 6-6 bowl season might not be enough. The program has to capitalize on the momentum of the sweet new stadium, and Brewster has one last shot to do it.
5 Non-Conference Games the Big Ten had better take very, very seriously
1. Minnesota at Middle Tennessee, Sept. 2
2. Northern Illinois at Illinois, Sept. 18
3. Central Michigan at Northwestern, Sept. 25
4. Wisconsin at UNLV, Sept. 4

Bold Predictions ? Penn State RB Evan Royster will make a run for the Big Ten Offensive Player of the Year ? Illinois LB Martez Wilson will make a run for the Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year ? Michigan State LB Greg Jones will win the Butkus. ? Michigan will win two of the big home games against Michigan State, Wisconsin, and Iowa. ? Purdue QB Robert Marve will come up with one monster game to ruin one of the big boys? seasons (watch out Wisconsin on November 6) ? Terrelle Pryor will be fine, but nowhere near Heisman worthy. ? Indiana will either lead the Big Ten in passing, or will finish a close second. ? Wisconsin?s Scott Tolzien will be the league?s most efficient passer. ? Michigan State former quarterback Keith Nichol will be an All-Big Ten receiver.

It?s all on Terrelle Pryor to carry the Buckeyes this year, but if something happens, JoeBauserman is at the point where he might be just good enough to tread water with. He?s not good enough to take the Buckeyes to a national title, but he could win a game or two if he had to. Kenny Guiton is the X factor with phenomenal speed and great upside. He?s like a smaller Pryor.
