2010 Big Ten Football Discussion

And that Browning is the second best OL. His evaluation seems a bit...odd.

I'd put Heyward at 2 or 3, Homan and Heyward can fight for that.

And Browning is the second or third best offensive lineman now that's he's inside.
He started every game in 2008 on the outside and basically wrote open invitations to pass rushers to get into the backfield.
It'd be funny if it wasn't true. I was REAL impressed with Browing, especially near the end of the season (can't remember his play in the Rose).

Don't know if anyone was paying attention, but Adam Rittenberg is making of list of the top 25 Big 10 players going into the 2010 season. I at least find it interesting I should have posted this yesterday or at 11 when I could've started guessing what it was going to look like. Anyway here's my guess for the final 9.

1. Cameron Heyward
2. Adrian Clayborn
3.Terrelle Pryor
4. Greg Jones
5 John Clay
6. Tyler Sash
7. Justin Boren
8. Broderick Binns
9. Evan Royster

I'm fairly certain it will be these 9 in some order. There just isn't anyone else who fits. This is only my guess and pretty close to how I rank the players. If it is these teams have the following number of players in his top 25:

Ohio State 6 (Heyward, Pryor, Boren, Homan, Posey, Rolle)
Wisconsin 6 (Clay, Carimi, Moffit, Borland, Tolzien, Watt)
Iowa 5 (Clayborn, Sash, Binns, Stanzi, Klug)
Michigan State 2 (Cousins, Jones)
Purdue 2 (Kerrigan, Smith)
Illinois 1 (Leshoure)
Northwestern 1 (Davie)
Indiana 1 (Doss)
Penn State 1 (Royster)

I think the list is pretty obvious. You could argue that Jack Crawford, Jermale Hines, Brandon Saine and maybe a few others should have consideration, but in general I think its a good list of the Big 10's best players.

What, you say?
I forgot a team? Of course not Minnesota is no good there's not much debate about that. Let me count the teams again. Hmm. I've only listed 9. Weird.

Looks like a pretty equal distribution of top talent among the top teams. Yet, when it comes to voting for Coach of the Year, we always hear that Ohio State has all of the talent and (insert name) did more with less. Maybe the guy in Columbus has done more with the talent at hand than he's been given credit for.

Looks like I missed completely on # 8 PSU's Stefen Wisniewski.

I'll assume he replaces Broderick Binns on the list which leaves him as the biggest snub to me.

No Michigan players in the top 25.....that can only mean a few things

a)- Michigan doesn't have any talent and that's why they have been losing. If you don't have talent, you can't win....right?

b)- All the good players transferred.

c)- Richrod and his staff have done a poor job coaching up the kids.

d)- Michigan players don't care anymore about winning and have conflicts with the coaches during a game. The program has distractions during the season and in the off season, etc

e)- All of the above

Can't wait until hockey season. Also the 2011 football season can't get here soon enough.

It would be nice if they gave Tressel credit for his recruiting for a change...

If Heyward plays as he did against PSU and USC. Sometimes it's not like that...not sure why.
Heyward was more dominant and consistent at his position than was Pryor.

Penn State Recruiting: At Some Point, The Sky Begins To Fall - Black Shoe Diaries
We're all a bit squeamish when it comes to recruiting around here. Our friends at Black Heart Gold Pants like to caption their recruiting updates, "Caring is creepy." It must also be said that when it comes to recruiting, "creepy is caring." While it's ridiculously nearsighted to throw a fit after every single recruiting update on Scout or Rivals, it's important stuff even if it's a bit icky. All of this said, you may have noticed that Penn State hasn't exactly been doing...well, anything with respect to recruiting. It's the end of June, and Penn State's lone commit is a two-star tight end from Delaware. Look at the teams you'd consider Penn State's main competition, and compare. Ohio State. Pittsburgh. Michigan. Notre Dame. Rutgers. Yes, it's only mid-summer, but this isn't encouraging.

It's an unbelievably down year for high school football talent in Pennsylvania. Very down. Scout's only five-star Pennsylvania player, Oil City tight end Ben Koyack, was considered a toss-up recruit between Ohio State, Notre Dame, and Penn State -- he wound up at Notre Dame. Of the remaining PA recruits, only Kyshoen Jarrett, Terrell Chestnut, Michael Caputo, and Shawn Oakman appear to have mutual interest with PSU (and a hundred other schools). Oakman was reportedly ready to pull the trigger for PSU a few weeks ago, but it never happened and he's visiting Pitt this weekend ($).

...cont'd
Ouch

Rittenberg's ranking of the Top 25 Big Ten Players

Iowa's Clayborn is #1, and based on his productivity it's hard to argue with it.

Assigning points to rankings the same way they do with other Top 25 polls (25 points for #1, 24 for #2 and so on) and ranking the teams according to points earned:

Rittenberg follows up with

5 who just missed the rankings

Ohio State C Michael Brewster: Unlike some other Buckeyes offensive linemen, Brewster has lived up to his recruiting hype so far in Columbus, starting two seasons at center. Brewster has made 23 starts and should contend for first-team All-Big Ten honors this fall, especially with Stefen Wisniewski moving back to guard.

Just more proof of the bare cupboard. RR clearly needs 5 or 6 recruiting classes of his guys before we can judge his time at scUM.
