Ohio State proves if you have the right players, depth is not an issue
Ohio State isn't deep enough to win it all. The Buckeyes have been in the top five for months. They have a player of the year candidate who will be no worse than an NBA lottery pick if he leaves school after this year. They have a fifth-year senior who has played in 10 NCAA tournament games, two other seniors and a junior, and a sixth-man freshman point guard who's 18 going on 30.
They can't win it all, though. They just don't have those quality players at the end of the bench. You never know when you're going to need your ninth-best player in the crucible of a tournament game. Guess San Diego State's third option off the bench, win fabulous prizes.
Talk about Madness.
Certain qualities are not overrated in college basketball in March. Good guard play is not overrated. Control-freak coaches need smart point guards. "Guys who can break you down, score for themselves and their teammates, and understand what the heck is going on out there,'' in the words of Purdue coach Matt Painter.
Using and defusing ball screens. That's not overrated. Not to get too technical here, but teams whose players are good at rolling off screens and nailing three-pointers -- and those who are equally adept at fighting through screens and preventing them -- are the teams that last past the first weekend.
"If you have enough guys who can make a play -- spot up for a shot off a screen or defend those people -- that's key,'' Indiana coach Tom Crean said. "So many of those games come down to the wire.''

Starting Five: Best of the best at their best? Still the Buckeyes

Sporting News? Mike DeCourcy answers five questions ripped from the headlines
Q: OK, one more time for our college football friends: We're about to embark on that dizzying, delicious time of year when a champion is settled in true (not faux) playoff fashion. Before the fun begins: On its best day, who is the best team you?ve seen?
Durrell Summers has been a major disappointment all season, but especially recently. He has scored in single figures in seven consecutive games. (AP Photo)
DeCourcy: Honestly, the best team I?ve seen since the first time I watched them practice has been Ohio State. When I saw Duke in person against Michigan State, it was dynamite offensively and on the way to being truly extraordinary, but it was still working out how to excel defensively and figuring out the roles of their three big men: Miles and Mason Plumlee and Ryan Kelly.
Ohio State seemed more complete to me because of the presence of Jared Sullinger, who gives the Buckeyes a sense of balance between inside power and outside proficiency that even the best teams -- particularly Kansas and Duke -- haven?t fully developed yet.
The Buckeyes can shoot from deep, drive the ball to mid-range, drive it to the rim, throw it in the post and defend at a high level.
They?ve allowed too many games to be closer than necessary, and they still don?t use frontcourt players Dallas Lauderdale and Deshaun Thomas as they should. But at their best, they?re the best.
I know that we have had some close games this season but I guess according to this guy we are supposed to beat everyone like we beat Indiana. Well, not everyone is as bad as Indiana and every team has a few bad games during the season. Also, I would like to know how we are supposed to use Lauderdale and Thomas. We can use Lauderdale and Sullinger at the same time for many minutes in a game because those two guys just aren't meant to be on the floor at the same time and with regard to Thomas, I guess he should get more minutes than Lighty, Buford, and threebler. Thomas is just growing into an all around decent player and his minutes up to the last few games should be limited. They?ve allowed too many games to be closer than necessary, and they still don?t use frontcourt players Dallas Lauderdale and Deshaun Thomas as they should
