2010-2011 Men's Basketball (Outright Big Ten & BTT Champs)

They complained about the guy not identifying himself, when the USAToday article on the final poll was posted at 1:20 ET today and quoted the guy and his reasoning. The votes are public throughout the year, but not for the final poll. That's the exact opposite of how it works for football, where they don't disclose the coaches votes until the week of the Final BCS Standings. ESPN

Perhaps they taped the show earlier than usual today since they're getting the rest of the week off for the Masters. Normally I think it's taped within an hour of it airing.
Ah I see. My mistake.

I vote we give the Men's Championship to the Lady Aggies. What a fantastic championship game that was.

Believe it or not, this was actually on the ticker at the bottom of ESPN last night under the "The Lead." Frankly, I don't understand why this is a story at all, more less that it would be the lead story. Must be a slow sports day. I thought all along that everyone understood that the best team didn't necessarily always win the NCAA tournament, so why is it news when a guy's vote actually reflects that concept? And, FWIW, I'm sure UConn doesn't mind a bit.

It was as deep a team that Matta ever had, and after kicking ass in the regular season (they started 2010-2011 by winning 24 in a row) and taking home the Big Ten tourney trophy, they had earned their number one overall seed in the NCAA Tournament with a 32-2 record.

I was pumped, certain that this was as much a team of destiny as the 2006-2007 team seemed to be.

Then the brackets came out.

That bracket sucked. They gave Florida a huge gift of a seed and region, and screwed OSU. The Florida/Butler region was clearly unequal in terms of NBA talent compared to all the other regions. Combine that with VCU coming out to meet Butler in the Final Four and you end up with a recipe for one of the worst NCAA title games ever.

Before they announced the brackets I had come off watching UK blaze through the SEC tournament. I was 100 percent certain they would be the absolute worst match-up for our OSU team out of the entire field. But I, naively and so full of hope and innocence, figured UK would be, at worst, the top #4 seed and so wouldn't be in our region.

UK came close to losing their first Dance game, though. This is how big a factor luck is and how many variables are at play. If they had lost that, I really think OSU was F4 bound with the best odds at the NC. If Buford doesn't have one of his worst nights ever, we win the UK game. If UK's lug inside doesn't have the game of his life, we win. But, alas, CBB national championships are made of hundreds of "ifs" that went your way, and sometimes it only takes a couple bad "ifs" to end your season with a loss.

when i watched the unveiling of our 4 on sunday, i was reminded of watching the unveiling of the brackets for the 2011 tournament. kentucky as our 4 was the shaft of all shafts. freakin' kentucky was as hot as any team in the nation coming into the tournament. 5 of their 6 conference losses were by a combined 10 points after regulation. before the brackets were announced, uk was one of a few teams i absolutely did not want to see before the final four. of course they gave us uk in the sweet sixteen. of course. and of course they gave us gonzaga this year.
oh, no doubt about that. kentucky was a 4-seed despite entering the tournament as the ap #11 team. we got by far the most difficult 4-seed despite deserving the worst 4-seed since we were the overall #1 team.

also...

north carolina, syracuse, and kentucky were the 2/3/4-seeds in our region.

north carolina, syracuse, and kentucky entered the following season in the preseason ap top 5.

north carolina, syracuse, and kentucky were 1-seeds in the following season's tournament.
