2009 TSUN News (football only discussion)

I've already been over to the scout board to see what they were saying about this article.

Absolutely ridiculous that Rod basically ran this kid out (along with others). I keep seeing "he didn't fit the system." Threet isn't good for coach Rod's system? Can this guy coach at all? I mean, isn't coaching making kids into the players that you need/want them to be? This isn't a middle school team. It's Michigan. The kids that were there when Rod got there could play football or they wouldn't be at Michigan.
Last year at this time many of them were positing that they'd be fine with Threet because he was athletic for a big QB and ran a version of the spread in high school. Funny what a difference a year and a coach with an agenda makes.

This system that I keep hearing about that is so player specific is nothing but a cop out for UM fans.

Paul Johnson became the coach at Georgia Tech and installed an offensive system. Now I didn't watch much GT football, but I believe they ran the triple option (or a version of the triple option) that Johnson brought with him from Navy. Georgia Tech won 9 games including a win over the Georgia Bulldogs. He won with kids recruited by the previous coach. He coached the players.
I was summarily banned from a scUM board for pointing out that very fact. Their excuse? GT had more talent in place to run their offense. GT had more talent than scUM...uh-huh.

The amount of fun I've had reading their boards since 9-1-07 is just unfair.

They have a charging buffalo... that's got to be worth something vs a school too good for a mascot.
I don't know that they're too good for a live mascot. I think it has been more of a practical decision, based on the possible liability ramifications of having a foul-tempered, smelly, frequently rabid rodent chained up on the sidelines.

As opposed to Dick Rod on the sidelines? I fail to see much difference.

ANN ARBOR, Mich. (AP) -- Michigan quarterback Steven Threet says he has been given his release from the school and plans to transfer. Threet said in a statement Monday he does not yet know where he will continue his college career.

School spokesman David Ablauf declined to comment. Threet enrolled early at Georgia Tech in 2007 but transferred to Michigan before fall camp. After sitting out the 2007 season under NCAA rules, Threet started eight games for the Wolverines in 2008.

The 6-foot-6, 230-pounder from Adrian completed 102 of 210 passes for 1,105 yards and nine touchdowns last season.

Michigan had a 3-9 record in coach Rich Rodriguez's first season, losing the most games in school history...

Earlier in this thread, someone made the astute comment that RichRod is recruiting like he's still at West Virginia. Well, he's also acting like he's still at West Virginia, where there was no scrutiny, or even curiosity, from the media and fan base as long as the wins were coming. But it's a totally different world up in Ann Arbor, and the negative publicity is simply going to steamroll him over the next few years.

The college football landscape could be affected dramatically by the current economic downturn. Public universities in Michigan, California, Florida, and Arizona seem to be those most likely to be hard hit in coming months according to what I am hearing from US colleagues. Arizona State professors have been told that they must take 13 days off without pay during this semester in order to avoid layoffs.

Think sports are important? Wait until professors are losing their jobs.

Rodriguez may not only be recruiting for West Virginia, he may be recruiting in an economy like West Virginia shortly.

An afternoon in the Fort

So there I was, minding my own business, working on a story Tuesday afternoon when my good buddy and colleague, Chris Balas of TheWolverine.com, informed me that I had (inadvertently) ticked off some of the posters on TheWolverine.com's Fort board.

If you haven't been to the Fort for a visit, I can't even begin to tell you how much fun it is to read what diehard Michigan fans, like "SkunkBear" and "Huge M Fan" and "TDFever" and "smokedeez" (I JUST got that) and "GhostofYost" have to say about their football team. Not to mention the legitimate medical and legal advice that often is requested and provided among the board members and the outpourings of support for those in need. They are, all in all, a spirited, knowledgeable bunch, even though most don't think I have a clue. (But that's OK. At least my mom -- and now I'm pretty sure I can include "wychowca" -- think I do.)

Anyway, seems I offended the W.E. (Wolverine Elite ... and I sincerely mean that in ONLY the best way!) in the Fort because of a blog Monday that simply said Michigan fans should not get too carried away thinking all will be well this fall because two freshmen quarterbacks are coming in to save the day. (This was in light of Steven Threet's announcement Sunday night that he is transferring.)

I'm sure there are not a lot of fans who have been drinking the Kool-Aid and believe that suddenly, a team that was 3-9 last year will become a team of destiny this year with a couple of freshmen quarterbacks coming in. (Full disclosure -- remember this: I thought Michigan would go 9-3 last season because of the defense and because I thought the Big Ten was weak. I admit, I was way wrong, but don't tell my husband I said that, because I am NEVER wrong.)

I merely was saying that tempering enthusiasm (no doubt hard to do when talking college football) is the way to go for Michigan fans. That's all! No agenda, nothing! And yes, I know that a 3-9 season probably went a long way toward tempering emotions and expectations for a lot of Michigan fans.

As for my reference to Justin Feagin ... yes, a lot of Michigan fans, some who actually speak to me, others who send email (and I am fairly certain there were a few among the W.E.), did think he would be the answer for the Wolverines' offense last year, considering Threet and Nick Sheridan were not your classic spread-offense quarterbacks.

Finally, to the members of the W.E. who spread their opinions and joy on the Fort every day, a huge "thanks" for the lively "conversation" on Tuesday afternoon.

Stanford's mascot has been banned from a number of online voting competitions due to their boosters gaming/manipulating the system. Must be the same situation here.
