Michigan may have struggled on the field in 2008, but the football program more than flourished at the turnstiles.
The Wolverines drew an average of about 108,500 for their seven home games last season. Penn State, who has been in a stadium seating battle with U-M, finished second with about 108,200, according to the Associated Press.
The Nittany Lions were 11-2 last season and went to the Rose Bowl. Michigan was 3-9 and 2-5 in Ann Arbor.
Michigan Stadium, still undergoing renovations, hosts the U-M opener against Western Michigan on Sept. 5. It's one of eight home games on the 2009 Wolverine schedule.

Even worse, though, was Rodriguez leaving Threet home for UM's season finale at Ohio State. Threet was hurt and unable to play, true, but he also was the starting quarterback for eight games and an obvious leader.

University of Michigan wideout Darryl Stonum pleads guilty to alcohol-related charge

University of Michigan freshman wide receiver Darryl Stonum pleaded guilty Tuesday in Ann Arbor's 15th District Court to a charge of operating a motor vehicle while visibly impaired.
The charge stemmed from an arrest last Sept. 28 after Stonum was stopped by state police at 3:30 a.m. in downtown Ann Arbor.
According to a police report, Stonum's car accelerated to a speed of approximately 60 miles per hour through the campus area of State Street, and nearly struck another vehicle crossing an intersection.
A preliminary breath test administered at the scene indicated Stonum's blood alcohol contest was .10. A person with a blood alcohol content of .08 or higher is considered legally intoxicated in Michigan.
Stonum was suspended for the team's next game - an Oct. 4 loss to Illinois - for what Michigan football coach Rich Rodriguez described at the time as a "violation of team rules." The wide receiver did not start the Oct. 11 loss to Toledo, but he did play in that game.
Stonum, 19, is scheduled to be sentenced March 11. In his first season with the Wolverines, Stonum started 10 times and caught 14 passes, including one touchdown.
