2009 TSUN News (football only discussion)

This is a serious question. I'm not flaming/trolling. Hasn't OSU put more players into the NFL than any other program this decade? The reason I bring this up is because Lloyd and UM were famous for this. They put talent in the NFL, but didn't accomplish much in college outside of the big ten. I hated that about UM. UM didn't develop their talent. I'm not saying OSU isn't developing their talent. Something is just not adding up. I'm curious as to what you level-headed buckeye fans have to say about this.

if something isn't adding up its because your math is off. since 2000 tOSU has accounted for 5 big 10 championships including 4 straight and 3 nc births with 1 win. people keep whining about the "big game" losses and the nc losses. first off, the only teams we have lost to either played in bcs games and or won there conference. second, the 2 nc losses were 1 part bad timing and 1 part overachieving.

in 06/07 we had one of the best offenses in tOSU history. what we didn't have was a defense. why? because very literally the ENTIRE defense from the previous year was playing in the nfl. we lost 9 starters to nfl teams. by the end of the year that d was extremely young and very gimpy. when our offense couldn't put points on the board in bunches, the game was affectively over. tressel and his staff were off 1 year on recruiting classes. just imagine 06/07 troy smith, tedd ginn, gonzo, jenkins, pittman, and beanie, with 05/06 aj hawk, bobby carpenter, ashton yobouty, donte whitner, nate salley, and santonio holmes.

07/08. tOSU was picked to finish 3rd IN THE BIG 10. not the nation, in our conference. it was a team full of sophomores and juniors and was supposed to be the year everyone in the big 10 got some payback. well, the fighting zookers got it done but thats about it. and in reality, any other year not 07 loosing to illi would have absolutely 100% kept tOSU out of the nc. but when every other top 5 team pulled a choke job we got the nod not because we deserved it, but because everyone else deserved it less. fact is, lsu was a better team. period. they were senior laden and extremely talented. we had equal if not slightly better talent, but we didn't have the maturity and it showed. when the momentum swung our way lsu held their cool. when it sung theirs... we didn't. what stuck out most to me from that game was lsu's first drive of the second half. game was still very much in doubt and all we needed was the ball. in the same drive we had a personal foul roughing the kicker on a punt and a personal foul roughing the passer on a 3rd and 25+ that was thrown 2 rows deep into the stands.

thats pretty much it in a nutshell
in 05 the d peaked.
in 06 the o peaked.
in 07 the rest of the country found ways to suck more than us.

the coaching staff was so very close to getting the stars to align. so close, and yet so far away.

I don't think we have underachieved based on JT's total body of work.

So in terms of NC's do I feel we "underachieved"? Yeah a little. I'd be lying if I said I was happy with 1 for 3. Then again you are in pretty elite company when you play for 3 of them.

Overall in terms of everything JT has changed about the program from the last coach I wouldn't trade him for any other coach in America. No one is a better overall fit for OSU and the state of Ohio than JT.

P.S. I have a thread called "Some BCS facts for your SEC friends" it has some numbers to help you with the SEC fans you run into down here but overall I'd say just don't waste your time. UF killed OSU in 2006 and thats as far as they want to go with it.

I'll have to check out that bcs thread. I'd imagine that's as far as they want to go with that discussion.

Anyway, great post. I agree with your assessment, especially about how JT changed the program and him being great for OSU. Obviously, as a UM fan, I have to hate the guy, but I can still at least respect what he has done.

Not at OT. The best tackle OSU has had in the last 4 years went very late to the 49ers. The other was an overachiever (Barton). Browning wasn't suited for the position. Datish was better suited as an interior player. Now OSU is turning to two sophomores who missed much of their frosh year with injuries.

Boone went after "very late," he was undrafted.

Outstanding discussion.

My original post was intended to show where UM is right now and some other OSU posters reinforced my point after a UM fan took a veiled shot at Ohio State and how they have underachieved under Tressel.

If underachieving is going to the NC game in a true rebuilding year then so be it. If underachieving is going to BCS bowl games and coming within 3 points (with a true freshman QB) of arguably the best team in the land I guess we have to take it.

UM goes 3-9 in a rebuilding year and stockpiles 3 star offensive projects and neglects the defense. The fan base will be ecstatic with 7 wins this year and a trip to a bowl game.

I guess it's just a difference in philosophies.

No need to get defensive. Your original question was about levels of talent. I was not taking a shot at OSU, as I clearly stated that it was a serious question, no flaming/trolling intended. It was just a question that sparked in my head because it was something that happened to a much higher degree at UM. I was just curious if any OSU fans were concerned. I got a couple great responses to which I replied. Others felt the need to go on the offensive and that's fine.
