2009 British Open at Turnberry

Because if he had choked you would have taken pleasure in that as well.

Not really. Seeing as how Cink hadn't won anything. Ditto when Kenny Perry lost the Masters...you had to feel for the guy.

Tom Watson. Give me a break. If the guy didn't want to feel bad, he should have retired. I'll feel just as "sorry" as when/if Brett Favre throws yet another INT to lose an NFL Championship Game.

Tom Watson thanks you for your pity and will somehow try to console himself

Tibs, you really couldn't come up with something better than "valentine." Say what you want about the Guy Incognito character, but at least it was creative, with the Bobby Valentine avatar and all...

Oh wait, now I get it.

I think the shot Watson wants back (other than the putt and the chip) is that 2nd shot on 18. He cooked that one a bit too much. If it hits as little as 5 feet shorter he stays on the green and is likely being interviewed right now.

So totally true, Mike. BUT, thats the beauty of the game and especially "The Open." On those links courses, you just never know. 5 feet shorter has Tom putting from 8 feet for birdie, not par.

I had to take awhile to post on this, especially after reading the lines posted by "Valentine." Guys like that will get me permanently banned and I don't want that. It just sickened me so much to see how anyone could call what Tom did this week a "choke." Guys who "choke" would have either driven into the deep rough or put their second shot into the rough or a bunker. Tom, on the other hand, hit two great shots, and just got a bad break. He's had them before, and hopefully, he'll stick around for some more of them, they just happen.

This week of golf was to me, as exciting as I can ever remember. For 72 holes stretched out over 4 days, Tom Watson made a 46 year old like me remember back to the days of the him against Jack battles. But this time, it was Tom against the world, and he did all that could have ver been expected from him. Hell, it was being 15 years old again watching a youthful Tom do his thing. There was no choke, not even close! Oh, and by thw way, HUGE congrats to Stewart Cink on his first major. Saddened that an American golf legend didn;t win, but happy as hell to see an American Ryder Cup player and truly good guy win his first. Stewart was overly gracious in victory, and you almost sensed that he was in a way bummed a little that it was in this scenario that he won.

Peace.

you mentioned something else. watson has played/competed and pressed what is now 3 generations of folks for a major championship, thats what shocked me as i watched today. hes played against jc snead, jack, crenshaw, trevino, miller, norman, woods, etc all at the highest level, the guy won his first major in 75, 34 years ago, amazing (at least to me)

"Amazing" is absolutely right. This tournament is one of those rare events that 25 years from now you'll remember Tom losing in the playoff, but nobody will remember who he lost to. No dis'on Cink, he;s a great player and a great guy. But, this years Open will ALWAYS belong to Tom, Claret or not.

Peace.

I thought for sure Watson would make that 8 or 9 footer to win the Open but i played the game before and i could understand how he felt, but i wanted so badly for him mark a page in sports history again. We needed great stories like this in our society to perk up ourselves in these troubled time for just a little while anyway. But congrats to Cink he sure deserves it and Tom Watson can say he was almost there and oh so close.

Of of my favorite posters of all-time makes one of the best posts about this tournament.

kippy never lets'ya down.

Well done.

in retrospect you knew when watson had the "short" putt you knew he would push it, its his mo. its darn near a sure thing... thats been his "thing" for as long as i can remember. its the reason he "only" won 9 majors.

It is eight majors I believe, but anyway a heck of a ride for Tom and for the rest of us as he turned back the clock 30 years....
