2007 tOSU Spring Practice (official thread)

2007 Ohio State Spring Outlook

Jim Tressel might want to consider hanging a vacancy sign outside the Woody Hayes Athletics Center. The veteran Ohio State football coach has 12 rooms for rent following the 2006 season in which the Buckeyes posted a 12-1 record, won the outright Big Ten championship and finished second in the national polls.

The Buckeyes spent the first 12 weeks of last fall in the No. 1 spot in the polls and twice defeated No. 2 teams (Michigan and Texas). They averaged 34.6 points and 384.5 yards per game on offense and allowed 12.8 points and 280.5 yards on defense.
Few teams in the history of Ohio State football have generated as much excitement. But graduation and the early departure of three juniors for the National Football League have left six holes on each side of the ball - 12 vacancies if you will.

I'm not sure that is a great thing to be said of Antonio.

did you skip this part?

Wait a minute ? Willie? Henton has a nickname already?
"Yeah, Willie Beamen, from Any Given Sunday," Boone said... ..."That kid?s crazy, he can do anything he wants. He can run, he can throw, he?s awesome."

No, I read that. That's the third time that people have said something along the lines that Henton confuses not only himself but others in the huddle, and the other guys struggle to always understand what he says because of his accent. The talent and potential is there no question.

OHIO STATE FOOTBALL
OSU football: Interceptions offset QBs' touchdowns

Saturday, April 7, 2007 3:42 AM

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

The weather for the Ohio State jersey scrimmage yesterday was reminiscent of a Michigan game. The quarterback play, however, was not -- at least nothing like the past three, when Troy Smith churned out one tour de force after another. The Buckeyes' offense and defense squared off for about 120 plays on a blustery, snowy day in Ohio Stadium.
"A November day in the Big Ten," coach Jim Tressel said.

OSU football notebook: Tressel keeps expectations high

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

Ohio State's Jim Tressel and his coaches are in the process of finding 11 new starters this spring, including a quarterback, but he said after a scrimmage yesterday that doesn't mean the definition of a successful season will change. "Just like any other, it's if we play to our potential," Tressel said.
Which begged the question, what is the potential for what is going to be a reloaded team?
"We're capable of being as good as anyone in the country," Tressel said. "We felt that every year we've been here and we feel that today."

I remember college gameday doing a segment on john david booty and he also had a problem communicating with his teammates because of the old southern drawl. Things seemed to work out pretty well over there, hopefully the same can happen here with willie

Buckeyes rebuild on and off field
Wednesday, April 11, 2007
By Todd Porter
REPOSITORY SPORTS WRITER

COLUMBUS In more ways than one, the dust has settled. Jim Tressel has put the 2006 season and a lopsided loss in the national championship game behind him. Ohio State's football practice facility is just about complete. Now, Tressel has started working on his own renovation project.

His team.

The Buckeyes almost completely have moved back into the Woody Hayes Athletic Complex after a yearlong $19 million renovation. Spring practice has begun and will culminate with the annual Scarlet-Gray game April 21 at Ohio Stadium.

The renovation project left the program disjointed. The weight room, for instance, was moved to the final 20 yards of turf inside the complex and nicknamed "The Yard." Coaches' offices were across the street at Fawcett Center.

Schoenhoft, Henton like being Buckeye QBs for change

"It's fun to run real plays," says OSU quarterback Rob Schoenhoft (18). "It's awesome."

Rob Schoenhoft and Antonio Henton are no longer in disguise. This spring, they're not trying to scramble like Michigan State's Drew Stanton, wing it like Illinois' Juice Williams or stand and deliver like Florida's Chris Leak. Schoenhoft and Henton are being themselves: candidates for the starting quarterback job at Ohio State, just like front-runner Todd Boeckman.

Kirk Barton mentions some extra motivation for the O-linemen wanting to win the scarlet jerseys.

"It's the battle for the honor to wear the scarlet jerseys," explained OSU offensive lineman Kirk Barton.

"That's always a big focus for us because we've been in these white jerseys for about a year now. It's been a little too long," Barton said.

"This is the first time I've worn it and I want to keep it," said second-year tight end Jake Ballard.

In addition to the pride factor, Barton said the offensive line has an additional motive for keeping the scarlet jerseys.

"The red is a bit more of a slimming color for us," Barton deadpanned, "and that's like a big motivation. In the white we look like a bunch of big marshmallows running around."

Many quotes. Ballard is questionable for the Spring Game because of a hamsting injury.

Stepping Up: With so many positions to fill next fall there is natural interest in who is standing out in spring drills. Members of OSU's receiving corps spoke with media members on Thursday, including both the wide receivers and tight ends, and some familiar names were mentioned as being spring standouts.

"Albert Dukes is stepping up, Devon Lyons is made some great catches today," said tight end Rory Nicol when asked about players who have caught his eye.

Defense wins 50-44.

Barton, Rehring, Skinner, and Mitchum DNP

JO was injured during the game--don't know how seriously

Boeckman--easily best QB
Henton--2nd best--a couple nice scrambles
Schoenhoft--3 ints

1st team OLine:
Boone, Smith, Cordle, Person, Browning

Both kickers looked real good.

Mo Wells 2 tds.

Can't say that I'm suprised. I could be wrong, but if I remember right it seemed like Robby threw lots of ints in highschool too. He has a cannon for an arm; theres no disputing that. I think because of his great arm though he thinks he can squeeze throws in when he can't. I was hoping that a few years at OSU would have cured him of this.
