2007 tOSU Spring Practice (official thread)

Can't say that I'm suprised. I could be wrong, but if I remember right it seemed like Robby threw lots of ints in highschool too. He has a cannon for an arm; theres no disputing that. I think because of his great arm though he thinks he can squeeze throws in when he can't. I was hoping that a few years at OSU would have cured him of this.

I heard the ball is flying with so much speed that many receivers cant handle it. Most of his interceptions are the results of tipped or dropped passes

He did a lot of that in highschool too, but people always assumed it was because his WRs werent good. Its interesting to hear that its still happening at OSU.

Defense Regains Scarlet Jerseys

The defense, boasting a few more veterans and a boatload of talent, took advantage of a banged-up offensive line and a trio of inexperienced quarterbacks to regain the coveted scarlet jerseys.
As is typical, the affair came down to the last play. With his team trailing 48-44, quarterback Todd Boeckman lined up the No. 1 offense at the 15-yard line for one last chance to save the jerseys for his side. However, after finding no one open, the junior from St. Henry, Ohio, was flushed and then run down by defensive end Lawrence Wilson, setting the final margin at 50-44 in favor of the defense.

Defense Dominates to Recover Jerseys
By John Porentas

Jersey scrimmage v2.0 is in the books this spring. The record shows that the defense won by a final score of 50-44 to recover the scarlet jerseys after having lost them to the offense earlier this spring in jersey scrimmage v1.0.

The defense was able to dominate a somewhat depleted offense and came up with four interceptions in the contest. Cornerback Donald Washington recorded two INTs, safety Grant Schwartz one, and linebacker Austin Spitler one. Buckeye quarterback Robby Schoenhoft had three passes picked off and Todd Boeckman one. Boeckman's interception and one of Schoenhoft's came on balls tipped by receivers. The other two of Schoenhoft's were ill-advised throws.

None of the three quarterback candidates particularly stood out, but the offense was playing without the services of numerous key players.

Offensive linemen Kirk Barton, Steve Rehring, John Skinner and Kyle Mitchum did not play as well as tight end Jake Ballard, wide receiver Brian Hartline and running back Chris Wells. With the lack of depth, particularly along the offensive line, the blocking left much to be desired in both the running and passing games for most of the scrimmage, and that made it tough for any of the quarterback candidates to stand out.

Pressure Helps Defense Regain Scarlet Jerseys
By Steve Helwagen
Posted Apr 14, 2007

The Ohio State offense got to hold the coveted scarlet practice jerseys for just eight days. An oppressive pass rush by the OSU defense saw to that.

The defense, riding the wave of four interceptions, five quarterback sacks and countless quarterback hurries, regained those scarlet jerseys with a 50-44 win in Saturday?s second jersey scrimmage of the spring. The scrimmage was moved from Ohio Stadium and held inside the Woody Hayes Athletic Center due to expected cold and inclement weather.

The scrimmage was conducted with a scoring system that rewarded the offense points for touchdowns, field goals, big plays and first downs (one point for each first down). The defense got points for third-down stops (one point), negative plays (two points) and turnovers (five points each).

We are going to have to have a lot of development on the offense quick I think, we should be better than what I see in reading the news.

Did you even see this quote in BB73's post, two above yours: "Kirk Barton, Steve Rehring, John Skinner and Kyle Mitchum did not play as well as tight end Jake Ballard, wide receiver Brian Hartline and running back Chris Wells". I don't see how we should be "better than what I see in reading the news" when four starters (RB, WR, 2 OL) and three key backups (TE and 2 OL) did not participate. Their absence seriously affected the offensive performance. The offense will be fine once they return...

Hmmm, what to make of the 2nd Jersey scrimmage, based on second hand reports?

Kicking game sounds solid. I like that.

Interior DL, one of our worries, sounds good. Denlinger, Worthington, and Larimore (I love the wrestlers at DT) were productive. How much of that had to do with a depleted OL is unknown. But I'm encouraged.

How many LBs can we put on the field at one time? An embarrassment of riches here. Great depth at DB as well.

I think this defense will be as good as any we've seen in recent years.

What to make of the offense? "Dunno" and "wait and see" have to be the answers at this point. Given they were not playing with a full OL, the question marks remain:
Who emerges at QB? Tressel stresses that someone has got to emerge. Boeckman is the #1 guy, but apparently did not seize the reigns. Henton had the best statistical day, but still sounds somewhat erratic. Schoenhoft, despite his gifted arm, apparently did not help himself.
Where were the WRs? Robiskie had one big play, and Hartline did not play, but where were the others (Ray Small)? Is this a problem with the QBs or with the WRs, or are our DBs just that good?
What about the RBs? On 20 carries Mo Wells gained 50 yards. Personally, I think he's a good one, but apparently he needs Beanie's thunder to make his lightening work. And by the way, who is this KC Christian, the walk-on who performed so well? Will we see him come fall?
And the OL. It always comes down to the OL. Granted their ranks were depleted, but it does not sound like they performed as well as we need them to. Are they depleted? Is the DL that good? Or, are they not yet good enough? That is my biggest concern.

QBs struggle, defense rules in OSU jersey scrimmage
Sunday, April 15, 2007
By Todd Porter
REPOSITORY SPORTS WRITER

COLUMBUS Life without Troy Smith started in earnest Saturday morning at Ohio State. It was obvious, too.

Ohio State?s defense was an overwhelming force during the annual jersey scrimmage despite winning just 50-44. Buckeye quarterbacks ? Todd Boeckman, Robbie Schoenhoft and Antonio Henton ? struggled much of the day, combining to throw four interceptions. They completed just 16-of-45 passes for 193 yards during 110 plays.

?Troy didn?t get picked off too many times in practice, and I never got him twice in the same practice,? said sophomore cornerback Donald Washington, who intercepted Boeckman and Schoenhoft. ?I don?t want to say it felt easy. It was a situation where guys knew their assignments.?

Injuries hit Buckeyes
Sunday, April 15, 2007
By Todd Porter
Repository sports writer

COLUMBUS If the Ohio State football team doesn?t get healthy this week, Saturday?s annual spring event might be the Scarlet, Gray and Gold Game.

More than 12 players wore gold jerseys during Saturday?s jersey scrimmage, indicating they were injured. Running back Chris Wells, right tackle Kirk Barton, left tackle Steve Rehring, wide receiver Brian Hartline, defensive back Andre Amos and lineman Kyle Mitchum were among those who did not play at the Woody Hayes Athletic Complex.

Most have minor or nagging injuries, but Head Coach Jim Tressel said some players will be held out of Saturday?s spring game, including Barton and Wells.

If there was a real game this week, how many could play?

?I don?t know. What week are we in?? Tressel said.

Eight.

?Then yes, all of them, because we?re in the Big Ten season.

OSU on the defensive
Jim Naveau | [email protected] - 04.15.2007
COLUMBUS ? Jim Tressel moved Ohio State?s intrasquad football scrimmage indoors on Saturday and the Buckeyes defense followed suit by putting a lid on almost everything the offense tried.
The defense, which got points for things like sacks, interceptions and dropping running backs for a loss, outscored the offense 50-44.
Operating without four of its best offensive linemen and its best running back, Ohio State?s offense didn?t have a lot of answers for the fired-up and mostly healthy defense it faced.
Ohio State will have to replace seven offensive starters and five defensive first-stringers this season from its 12-1 team of last season.

Yes I did see that. IMO, since we (the Buckeyes) reload then IMO our backups should be able to perform as well as or close to the level played by the first string. And I do realize that this is partially wishful thinking but isnt' that the way most Buckeye fans feel?

Well when you're missing 2 starters off the o-line, Beanie, Hartline, and Ballard just on offense you're not going to perform very strongly. With a healthy line, beanie wells, brandon saine, and healthy recieving threats in ballard and especially hartline and I think we'll be fine.

As for the QB race and this is just my opinion. To me it seems like Boeckman is #1 BUT isn't doing anything to seperate himself as the starter, but rather is just barely hanging onto the starting position. Shoenhoff to me seems like is the most mistake prone and is really struggling with the game play aspect. To me from the reports the only one thats truely shown moments of brilliance is Henton. He's thrown only one INT (the fewest of the Qb's) in the two scrimmages we've had and according to the reports sounds like he's the one that really has brung a spark to this offense. Seems like he doesn't struggle with the game play but just has minor mental things (communication).

TO ME I could care less who starts at QB, but I'd take a kid who's rapidly improving and making things happen when the pocket breaks down over the others who are just kind of standing their ground. The upside of Henton is unreal, and I honestly have a feeling Boeckman will be the starter which will kind of suck in a way. Reason I say that is because Henton probably isn't ready for the 07' season, but you know once tressel has his starter this year (Boeckman) that he'll also start in 08' regardless if Henton is better in 08'. I truely think that Boeckman is better now, but in 08' Henton will be the best we have and he'll get a raw deal in 08.
