Well, if Russell didn't drop two INTs against YSU and Gibson didn't drop a sure TD INT against Akron, our TO margin would be markedly better...

Yeah Mili - thats what we were all talking about those 3 Int's that could have been touchdowns and that is why we thought our secondary was
looking so good then. I guess we will find out against the Huskies.

Call me pessimistic, or still smarting from the NC fiasco, but I think our secondary is our greatest weakness. We probably won't get beat deep with guys like Jenkins and Washington, but like Mili said, the short passing game, especially screens to RB's and the occasional QB rolling out of the pocket have killed us. Maybe I'm spoiled from the 2005 defense (which was probably the most technically sound, individually talented defense we've fielded in a long time), but the 2007 edition isn't quite there yet, granted I don't know enough about football to know what we did differently that year scheme-wise (outside of having freakish talent) than we are doing now (and what we did in 2006).

Basically, if we are going up against a spread offense with an experienced QB, I'm worrying.

keep this in mind regarding the '05 D. they gave up 550 yards to Minny. the '06 D didn't give up 400 yards in a single game, and still was a statistically better scoring D even including the final two games... UF did a lot of stuff that we didn't expect, and the game got out of hand so quick that it didn't even matter if the coaches tried to make adjustments... it was over before halftime... but they still didn't have 400 yards. we just handed them a short field for the whole first half and they capitalized.

the COOL thing about the D is that they have been so abnormally good and yet they have dropped some sure INT's. Also, it was terrible seeing Lawrence Wilson go down but others stepped up including a true freshman Cameron Heyward. I expect Washington to roll up more yards because we will be playing contain instead of attack, based on what I've seen so far (not many blitzes, etc.). Which is okay!

OSU 27-13

Go Bucks!

Not to mention (not a knock on Mitchell or O'Neal) but our safties are far better this year with Russel and Coleman. We have play makers at safties (although they drop INT's) and our secondary went from our weak point last year to a position of strength this year. Also not a knock on Yao Smith but Washington is far a better corner because of his size 6'1" 190. In our secondary last year the only person who played consistent and made an impact was Jenkins.

Smith was used for blitzing, O'neal was lost back there, and Mitchell often had to compensate for O'neals shortcomings. This years Secondary is just heads and shoulders better than last years. You add that with the best group of linebackers and a dominating D-end, and three other emerging threats across the line and you got yourself a top 3 defense.

Along the comments with the secondary, Donald Washington was a beast, always getting a hand on a reciever. While he isn't quite the shut down corner that Jenkins has been, he was all over the man he was covering and I have been very impressed. This secondary leads me to believe this D could statistically be one of our best ever in the end.

I think the best indicator of how amazing our secondary is how little they're thrown at.

Akron, down 13-2 in the 3rd quarter still wouldn't take shots downfield. I think there were plays where there were receivers downfield, but they just were NOT open.

And then DBB had this great statistic about how many times Jenkins was thrown to - 2. His men are NOT getting open.

And is there any deeper LB corp in the country?

Gibson, Spitler, Homan, Laurinitis, Freeman, and Grant made plays. Each one. Thats our ENTIRE 2 deep making plays. WHAT?!

And by the way, is there ANY deeper LB corp in the country? Every single one except for Mark Johnson and Tyler Moeller made a play against Akron.

Spitler, Gibson, Freeman, Homan, Animal, Grant... That's ridiculous. Ludicrous.

I think this is partly true. However, I believe the main reason we did not see a lot of throws is because the front seven put such phenomenal pressure on the QB's that they had no time to throw the ball, and when they did, it was short passes.
