Sunday, April 8, 2007 3:31 AM

Ohio State's defensive statistics through the first 11 games of 2006, and how they slid in the final two, a 42-39 win over Michigan and a 41-14 loss to Florida in the national-title game:

2. I think the consensus is that Rose has been growing a lot and could end up playing DT and/or DE. I think he stays at end though.[/QUOTE]

Even though I don't like this move,it looks like it might be a Darrion Scott, Kenny Peterson,David Patterson type of deal which shows great versatility at that position. In certain packages like the 3-4 Rose can kick out to end

ne 1 going to the spring game

Since I live about a 30 second walk from the stadium I GUESS I'll go :tongue2:. But seriously I'm pretty excited to see some Buckeye football, even if it is just a spring game. How does the ticket situation work? Is it all assigned seating? Can you just show up and get a ticket?

The spring game is at 1 pm on the 21st. Tickets are $5 for geneal admission, kids 6 and under get in free. On game day, only cash sales will be allowed. The gates are scheduled to open at 11 a.m. Seating is first come, first served.

If you're that close, you may want to purchase a ticket at the stadium ahead of time, in order to avoid lines.

Laurinaitis and Freeman will have to step up and lead the defense next year again. Hopefully they will be a shutdown defense and wont make the offense have to put up alot of points.

Jenkins has been a leader since last season, they he lead the young DBs in watching film. He will again provide leadership in the secondary.

Gholston will be a leader because of seniority and performance.

However, Laurinaitis occupies that MLBer spot and I like his demeanor a lot. I think he will turn out to be a fine leader for the defense.

New Names Emerge in Defensive Backfield

By Marcus Hartman

Kurt Coleman, who can?t seem to avoid the ball if he tries, has moved to safety and made a strong bid to start this fall. Tyler Moeller, a tweener the coaches want to get on the field however they might, is also a new face among the last line of OSU?s defense.

Among the young cornerbacks, Chimdi Chekwa is catching eyes with his athleticism, and Andre Amos was looking more polished before a knee injury put his spring on pause last week.
One returning starter ? corner Malcolm Jenkins ? has fielded questions about his potential to be a captain and even an All-American, while the other ? safety Jamario O?Neal ? looks to build on an up-and-down first season as a starter by adding knowledge of the defense to his unquestioned athleticism.

Jenkins and Washington are a very good pair of good all-around corners. Washington had an excellent spring game and Jenkins has shown that he's a very good tackler as well.

Moeller is a very exciting player in the secondary and plays very fast. He will need to improve his ball skills and reading the QB. He almost killed Robo as he just flat out tackled Robo before the ball got there. I think this is a player that they like a lot for the future and will bring him up slowly.

Coleman has the perfect temperment to play safety. This guy is always around the ball and sticking his neck in there. The only thing I don't like is his weight, and I could see getting bruised up by big RBs like PJ Hill. With that said I do see him starting in the fall next to Russell.

O'Neil is stuck in an unfortunate situation where his development has been hampered by injuries. Good player and can make plays, but just lacks the aggressiveness due in part because of unfamiliarity with the defensive system. With young up and coming players like Coleman, Moeller, Gant and Schartz moving up the ranks, I don't know how much he will be utilized.

Marcus Freeman has made substantial improvements from the early part of last season. He is faster at getting to the ball. Still needs to improve on positioning himself better at the angle of attack to make the tackle and whiffing on the tackle.

Whiffing on a tackle is not what you have to worry about with Laurinaitis. He always gets in the right position to make a tackle. Can't ask anything more from the MLBer.

Grant is playing a lot faster this spring and making a lot more plays. He does need to work on blitzing with more control. We finally got a glimpse of his guy's reputed 4.4 speed on that fumble runback. Will be splitting time with Terry.

Worthington played really well in the spring game. Shed tacklers at the line of scrimage to make tackles. If he and Denlinger continues to improve, we could have a couple of dependable DTs.

Lawrence Wilson looks like the dude I created in a videogame. He is so big and so fast. He's got the look of a future top ten pick. Gholston is a little smaller, but plays faster and makes plays in pursuit. I expect big things from these two in the fall.

Overall, my impression is that this defense will attack much more aggressively than the last one because everyone now understands their roles. I think that this defense is so much better that if we get decent play from the QB position, our overall talent level on both side of the ball would actually be an improvement over last season.

2007 Defensive Outlook
By John Porentas

Last year the-Ozone published a look-forward on the football team immediately after national signing day. This year, we waited.

Last year it was pretty clear to us how the OSU team would shape up in 2006, but heading into 2007, things are a bit more murky. That made us want to wait until after spring football so we could get a better feel for some of talent returning at positions of need.

Last year, we divided our report into three sections: Offense, Defense, and Special Teams and Incoming Freshmen Who Could Help. This year we're doing it the same way. We'll be doing one installment daily every-other-day for the next week.

Let's see...

Future first rounders:

Lawrence Wilson - has the size and speed the NFL loves, and he's not just numbers, he's a player.

Vernon Gholston - Oh yeah, first rounder.

Malcolm Jenkins - Best corner in the league next year

Laurinitis - Possibly. Linebackers don't get drafted that high unless they're AJ Hawk. I'm not ready to annoint the Animal to Hawk status.

Robert Rose - In a few years, he will be. NFL loves pass rushers.

Anderson Russell - In a few years, he'll be in the first. A lot of potential, and he's a gamer.

Anyone else ready to step into the 1st round?
