2007 Preseason and Regular season Polls

Put West Virginia, Louisiville, or Rutgers in the Big Ten and they would do NO BETTER than #3 in the conference, let alone have all three in the top 10 in the nation. OSU, PSU, scUM, Wiscy, Iowa, resurging Illinois & MSU under Zook & Dantonio... I mean, tell me I'm wrong there!

Wisconsin should be the highest rated in the Big Ten this year and anyone putting scUM in front of them hasn't done their homework yet.

Make no mistake about it, Michigan will be rated higher than Wisky (and probably everyone but USC (maybe LSU)) and I agree with you that they don't deserve such a lofty rating considering the loses on D. But, OSU came in last season with an anticipated juggernaut on O (Sr. QB, established RB, Excellent WR corps) and a questionable D (Hawk, Whitner, etc. all gone) Pre-season balloteers love offense.. and Michigan will have that. Of course, if any of the 3 big guns go down, and I think one of them will (Hart) they'll have some trouble. Likewise, OSU had the eventual Heisman winner running the show, and Henne isn't even close. What I'm saying is, Michigan's O, while clearly the strength of their club isn't going to be as good as OSU's was last year (IMO).

So, while I agree with you, the fact is - and paired with Michigan's consistently always being ranked higher coming out of the gate - they'll be top 5.

I tend to agree but they are getting that high of a ranking due to the same reason Ohio State got theirs last year.
And that would be how? Let's review. We entered the 2006 season coming off wins at Michigan and against Notre Dame in a bowl. They enter the 2007 season coming off losses at Ohio State and to USC in a bowl (giving up 37 points a game in those losses). Definitely not the same. Also, Michigan's losing almost as many starters on defense (7) as we did (9), and their returning offense isn't as explosive as our was. Typical pre-season over-hype.

With the 2008 College Football season quickly
approaching, whose Top 10 rankings do you
agree more with, Greenberg or Golic?

Greenberg
1.
USC
2. Michigan
3. LSU
4. Florida
5. W. Virginia
6. Oklahoma
7. Virginia Tech
8. Rutgers
9. Louisville
10. Ohio State

Golic
1.
USC
2. Texas
3. Florida
4. Ohio State
5. LSU
6. Oklahoma
7. Wisconsin
8. Michigan
9. Notre Dame
10. Arkansas

Definitely Greenberg. While I always want to ranked as high as possible as the start, being objective leads me to believe we deserve to be in the lower half of the top 10 because of the QB question. Now, I think Boeckman will turn out alright and our offense will be more efficient than most expect, but the pre-season questions about it are valid.

I don't hold how a team finished the season very highly when talking about their ranking for the next year.

With that said, they do not lose as much on defense (although it is close) and no they wont be as explosive but that doesn't mean it isn't as good. They will have areas on offense that should prove to be stronger than Ohio State had last year and vise-versa.

I'd go with Golic even if I hadn't seen their two polls; Greenberg knows nothing about CFB.

Golics is horrible.

Unfortunately, conference standings have nothing to do with national rankings. I agree with you that the best of those three MIGHT be #3 in the Big Ten. I also think that all three of those teams will not finish in the top 10. Maybe 2 of them will, but not all three. The only way all three will finish in the top 10 is if they all go 1-1 against the other two teams. But a 2-loss Big East team will have a tough time being in the top 10.

Don't know much about OU for 07, but are they worthy of a 6?
The general read given by CFN is that Oklahoma's schedule is set up for an easy slide into poll prominence.
They host Miami early on and have the October 6th Red River vs Texas.

Amazingly some even suggest that absent Adrian Peterson and the emergency QB from last year that the Sooners are in fact better set as a team than they were last year.

The early spring buzz ... After spending the last few months as the Apollo Creed to Boise State's Rocky, and the program that everyone outside of the greater Norman area rooted against during the Fiesta Bowl, the motivation will be there for the defending Big 12 champions to be even better. Nine starters return on offense, eight come back on defense, and kicker Garrett Hartley might be the best in the nation.
The big spring question is ... Who'll be at quarterback? Running back? More than fine with Allen Patrick, Jacob Gutierrez and Chris Brown returning along with the expected emergence of redshirt freshmen DeMarco Murray and Mossis Madu. Wide receiver? One of the best in the country with Malcolm Kelly and Juaquin Iglesias leading the way. The offensive line should be tremendous. Now a quarterback has to emerge to replace the steady Paul Thompson. Junior Joey Halzle has the practice experience as the number two man last season, but he'll have to fight off Sam Bradford and Keith Nichol for the job. The job is as wide open as it gets.

Sounds rosy. I for one don't buy it, mainly because of the key losses last season - number one of which was Bomar before the season even began.
