2007 Preseason and Regular season Polls

An update to the most weeks voted #1 in the AP poll, including preseason. I hate to get ahead (take 1 game at a time!), but if tOSU were able to go 12-0, that should mean taking the lead in this category by the first week of December.

95 - Oklahoma
95 - Notre Dame
89 - Ohio State
86 - USC
70 - Nebraska
68 - Miami
59 - FSU
42 - Texas
34 - Michigan
31 - Alabama

Perfect illustration that how the polls work is bullshit. Cal beat Oregon--at Oregon--just last week and has the same record as Oregon, and yet they're ranked below Oregon simply because they lost yesterday and Oregon didn't. Now, you may argue that Cal losing at home to Oregon State is wrose than Oregon losing at home to Cal, but common sense dictates that when you have the same record and same relative schedule, you go head-to-head to determine who's better, not on timing of the losses and where they're ranked at the time.

Computers have Oregon ranked ahead of Cal, too, and give take no consideration to time of loss.

Man, after USC there are some really big drop-off's. Alabama is really surprising.

Unfortunatly, because of the loss to App State, a tOSU loss to UM (even if they are a top 15 team on the road) will be looked upon very harshly.
Besides, if UM runs the table then they are in the Rose bowl which leaves zero chance that the Big Ten runner up is playing in the NC game.
Nah, I don't agree....if the voters thought of App State that way, Michigan wouldn't even be ranked now. App State is being committed to the past, you've even got people saying now that Stanford over USC is the bigger upset. And you've also got Penn State ranked in the coaches' poll (always the less reliable of the two polls however, IMO) right now, so losing to Michigan doesn't seem to have harmed them.

Computers have Oregon ranked ahead of Cal, too, and give take no consideration to time of loss.
I wouldn't put a whole lot of weight on what the computers say right now. Check out where they have UVA - 14th, tied with Cal. Our strength of schedule is 79th right now and we're averaging fewer YPG on offense than such stalwarts as NC State and La. Tech. The only thing I can think of is that the computers are overrating having the lead in the conference. They're doing the same to Kansas, ranking KU 8th in the land, despite a SOS of 110th.

How's this for consistency. Since he is supposedly a respected voice in the CFB media community (although I think it's overblown), Stewie Mandel decided to jump USF from 6th to 1st in his vote and keep Ohio State at 3rd (LSU is 2nd)....

News from The Associated Press

I wonder if should Ohio State lose, will Mandel even have them in the top 25? Cynicism tells me no, but he'll probably put them around 18 or so for "consistency"....

My "Amen to that" was to a statememt that said rankings should be based on performance on the field, rather than a gut feel of who would win matchups. Evaluating "performance" includes looking at the level of competition and margin of victory, road wins vs. home wins, etc.

I hear you. But at some point the two evaluations tend to merge. You think, "Hmmmmm...well, looking at the level of competition and margin of victory, road wins vs. home wins, etc...I think X would beat Y's ass..."

Performance analysis leads you to that conclusion, and it is awfully hard not to go down that particular route as you look at it.

We shouldn't estimate the efforts of the press to knock teams above us, even if we win out.

Let's be honest, if a team was ranked above us with the following characteristics, wouldn't people here be pontificating from the roof tops?

  • Quality win: 2-4 Washington
  • Sagarin SOS: #73
  • Opponents' win-loss record:23-25
  • An FBS opponent (YSU) barely in that top ten
  • Two other in-state MAC opponents
Our SOS will climb to about #35 by year-end. South Florida will be two touchdown favorites in their next three games, which are away from home at UConn and Rutgers, and then Cincinnatti at home. All three games will be closer. Their quality wins at WVa and Auburn may take on some tarnish when LSU beats Auburn this week and WVa loses possibly two more.

The moral is that there is a lot of football left to be played and as long as we keep winning, we are likely to get a shot to play for it all.

Buckeyes sitting on top of BCS

Ohio State starts off first BCS poll of season where it was almost all of last year; South Florida ranks No 2.

By Staff and Wire Reports

Monday, October 15, 2007
The way this BCS thing is shaking out, Ohio State could meet another Florida team for a national title. Not the Gators, though, but the Bulls from South Florida.
The first Bowl Championship Series football standings show the Buckeyes (7-0) on top because they are No. 1 in the coaches' and Harris polls.

Buckeyes in familiar spot ? No. 1

Ohio State at top of all major polls, including first BCS rankings.

By Doug Harris
Staff Writer

Monday, October 15, 2007
Ohio State sits atop the initial Bowl Championship Series standings by virtue of its No. 1 rankings in the USA Today coaches poll and the Harris Interactive poll.
The Buckeyes received 56 of 60 first-place votes from the coaches and were voted first by 110 of 114 Harris panelists. But they are only tied for fifth in the computer rankings, which make up one-third of the formula, giving them a tight lead over second-place South Florida in the BCS standings.

Columbus- How did this happen?
Six weeks ago, Ohio State defeated Youngstown State, 38-6, to open the college football season, yet dropped a spot in the AP poll, to No. 12.
Since then, the 11 teams ranked ahead of the Buckeyes on Sept. 2 have lost a total of 17 games. The Buckeyes, you may have noticed, have lost none.

Buckeyes ride upsets to top of BCS standings
Monday, October 15, 2007
BY Mike Popovich
REPOSITORY SPORTS WRITER

COLUMBUS Unpredictable? Maybe that is the best way to describe the 2007 college football season.

There is one familiar sight, though.

Ohio State is No. 1 in the BCS.

Two more upsets Saturday helped vault the Buckeyes into the top spot in the first BCS ratings released Sunday. Ohio State also climbed back to No. 1 in the Associated Press Top 25 poll.

It all adds up to this: If the Buckeyes win their final five games, they will play in the BCS national championship game for the second straight year.

The Buckeyes (7-0) were as low as No. 11 in the AP poll five weeks ago. They kept winning, while teams ahead of them fell victim to a string of upsets that threw the national title game race up for grabs.
