Amen to that.

Only to an extent. If you go down that route in its purest sense, you could have fricking undefeated Boise State winning a national championship with a weak schedule over an undefeated South Florida, as the major powers all have one loss in tough conferences.

I'm not surprised at all that Michigan is ranked. I actually anticipated them coming in around 20 this week. They've looked bad a quite a few games, but they beat a PSU team that crushed a Wisky team, the dominated a crappy ND team (who beat a team from the all-powerful PAC 10), and they beat up on Purdue as bad as we did (albiet at home). Still, they've become the most consistent competition we have in the Big 10.

My "Amen to that" was to a statememt that said rankings should be based on performance on the field, rather than a gut feel of who would win matchups. Evaluating "performance" includes looking at the level of competition and margin of victory, road wins vs. home wins, etc.

I agree that Boise State vs. Rice in a national championship game would be a boring game, and a sad, sad day in college football. But what does Boise State need to do to win a national championship? Or any of the non-BCS teams, for that matter. If they win the games that were put in front of them, why don't they deserve an equal shot at a national championship? And simply saying "it's Boise State, fer crissakes!" is the same as saying that Miami should be in the national championship game - "they're Miami, fer crissakes!"

If Boise State is one of three undefeated teams, I can see leaving them out. Maybe their quality wins don't match the quality wins of the other two teams. Or whatever reason you want to come up with. However, I think that an undefeated Boise State team has a better argument to be in a national championship game than a one-loss Michigan team does. If Michigan had wanted to be in the national championship game, they shouldn't have lost to Appalachian State.

Well, for starters, play more than two or three games away from home. They are doing that this year.

Play good teams from the major BCS conferences. Which they also are starting to do. This year they got waxed by 2-4 Washington, so I guess that says something.
