2007 Preseason and Regular season Polls

Three teams currently above us are guaranted to lse a game this year because they play someone else currently above us: USC at Cal, Florida at LSU, and Texas vs. Oklahoma. If we keep winning we're guaranteed to crack the top 5.
We're closer to 6th than we are to 9th regardless - the point gap is closing fast. Florida and LSU will most likely play each other twice, since they both appear to be mortal locks to run the table outside of their first game against each other. However, neither looked as dominant against mid to lower-tier SEC teams as they had in their past OOC games. Texas is going to drop a game somewhere, not to mention they're looking like dead men walking when they play Oklahoma. As for the Sooners, despite the lopsided score against Tulsa, Tulsa played them great for about 3 quarters, and there were some really bad bounces that went Oklahoma's way. I caught most of that game, and was really impressed by Tulsa, even though they were ultimately blown out. I saw a lot of holes in Oklahoma's D.

Between our championship game performance last year, and the creampuff OOC schedule this year, however, I think we're going to need A LOT of help if we're shooting for anything higher than the auto-bid to the Rose Bowl. I think we're going to need some of the teams ahead of us to drop two games, not just one. We're going to get murdered on the SOS equation in the computer polls.

Luckily, teams 1-4, despite looking so dominant in their early games, all have traps in their schedules that could open the door.

I'm not being defensive. I just don't understand the contention that Nebraska is offensively inept.

Let me rephrase then:

When faced with average to above Division I-A talent against them on defense, they've struggled both times. One game they won against Wake, the other they lost pretty convincingly against USC. With Wake looking like a middle of the road ACC team at best, Nebraska has padded the stats on the likes of Ball State, USC's 4th and 5th string and Nevada.

the season will play out, of course, but games against teams like A&M, Texas, Oklahoma State and Mizzou will either prove or disprove my theory here.

I think only the best teams are playing defense.
I think that excludes WVU.

Obviously, Wyoming and Boise don't belong in the elite group. But, just look who is on this list!

Defense does tend to win championships....

Although Kansas and Penn State probably don't belong in the group either....

Another way to look at the NC picture is the remaining schedule of the top 4-5 teams.

USC has to play @Cal, @ Oregon and @ ASU
LSU has to play UF then @ UK the very next week (possible letdown vs decent team on the road) and SEC CG
UF has @LSU, @UK, cocktail party and @ South Carolina plus SEC CG
OU has to bet Texas on a neutral field...thats it.

Schedule wise easiest to hardest
1. OU
2. USC
3. LSU
4. UF

I'm not including WVU in the top 4-5 because they are a fraud.

At this point I would argue a 1 loss UF/LSU should be in the NC game vs an undefeated USC over and undefeated OU.

JAX...how exactly are we a fraud???

And the past two weeks, our defense has been very good....we have played Maryland (not great, but a decent team) and ECU (not good, but isnt FIU)....Our defense has stepped up the past two weeks like we should have....

I'm lost though as to how we are such a fraud....We havent played great teams yet, but not many people have.....We have a big test Friday, beating USF would be a great win for us....

IMO, you guys are a slightly better version of UL. Great offense, although its one dimensional, and no defense. USF and UC are the only 2 teams I have seen play a shred of D in the BE this year. I'll reconsider my opinion if you guys manage to come out of Tampa with a W.

Do you mind if I guess why Jax thinks WVU is a fraud?

If you're pinning your rep on Maryland, let me ask:
  • Is that the same Maryland that has played Villanova, FIU and Wake apart from WVU and STILL manages to be 98th in the nation in total offense? OK
Great point about ECU not being FIU though. I mean, FIU is all the way down at 119 in Scoring Offense and ECU is up there at 111. So they've got that goin' for 'em.

Oh and, speaking of FIU. You held Maryland to one fewer yard than FIU did. Congratulations on that.

That and I've just plain ol' sat and watched the better part of the Maryland and ECU games. WVU's lack of athleticisim, discipline and tackling ability on D is very obvious.

Jax...then you obviously didnt watch the ECU game...they had under 100 yards for most of the game, and their TD came against the scout team....

slightly better than UL? I seriously doubt we give up 45 to MTSU and get 38 dropped on us by Cuse....One dimensional? Pat White was 18-20 yesterday.....we throw when needed, but when you rush for 300+ a game, why throw? which part of our team is undisciplined?

I'll never get my point across to you guys, so I concede.....

You'll never get your point across because there is no point. WVU's defense is pedestrian at best.

Maryland, Marshall and Western Michigan all moved it and scored well. Take as much pride in thumping ECU as you want to. Whites passing numbers are going to go down significantly vs any decent team.

Maryland had a great scoring night against us...7 points until about 4 mins to go in the game when they scored their other 7 ....umm, Western Mich scored 10 pts in the 2nd half against the backups The 14 pts they scored in the first half were good plays on their part...not going to take anything away from them.....Marshall made some great plays in the 1st half to score 13 in the first half (our special teams didnt help our cause as we gave up 2 big plays on ST)...however in the 2nd half, when we realized we were playin like crap, we outscored them 42-10....

Im not trying to say our Defense is great, because they are not....but my god, they are not the worst defense in the conference, let alone the world as some people make it out to be. Our defense is greatly improved now then it was through 4 games last year. This year, we have 15 sacks, last year we had ZERO through 4 games....so theres an improvement....But Jax, since you know WVU better than I do, Im sure you already knew that....
