2007 Preseason and Regular season Polls

Ryan Mundy plays for them, hence their defense automatically drops down about 10 notches in my book. A man so good in coverage he had a new defensive category named after him: Yards after Mundy.

Or Trent, or Hall (wait, he graduated, or completed his athletic eligibility)...not sure I'd jump on the Mounties. :wink2:

I'm not being defensive. I just don't understand the contention that Nebraska is offensively inept.

I don't think they are offensively inept, I just think they have a horrid coach that has yet to be exposed. Not that I give a shit about Nebraska, but I think people comparing USC/Nebraska vs LSU/T-Tech is about the same, both (VT and Neb) are horribly over-rated teams.

LSU vs. Florida is going to be an awesome game to watch....although I wonder if I'm the only one who thinks Tim Tebow is going to get killed running as much as he does? And Florida has Ketucky and Georgia in the weeks following that LSU game. They could lose 2 out of those 3....

LSU will beat us. Our young defense is - well- young! On the Ole Miss 80 yard TD bomb, the receiver beat a freshman db and the freshman safety took a bad angle. That is not going to be rectified by October 6 in Red Stick. That is not to say that we cannot possibly win. LSU can brain fart and turn it over several times and give us short fields - like in Arizona against y'all. It might be played in a rain storm and our grind it out Tebow running game work better than the LSU speed. But we are NOT a top five team. No way. We lose one or two in regulation, and if we make it back to Atlanta we get schooled in the Dome by LSU.

That is not to say we won't be really sick in '08, 'cause we will be. But not this year. It is a credit to y'all to see you up there after losing so many guys. You guys have a keeper of a coach. Kudos.

I would love to see a USC LSU matchup, because I think LSU will take them. USC would beat the Gators - IMO. I'm just enjoying the Gator recruiting. Once we get the team back to a proper distribution of upper classmen, we can make some noise the next few years.

Just wow... tOSU 3? Maybe we'll work our way into that spot, who knows, but I don't think we're third yet. If you are basing this on the bashing of the Mildcats then you need to remember they lost to duke last week. And for USC, forth? Maybe I get more exposure to them but I think they are the best team in the nation.

Oklahoma runs the score up, that's what Stoops does, so somehow that makes his victories better than SC beating a ranked opponent? I think if you put Nebraska and Miami on the same field Nebraska wins that game.

As for USC, you really think that USC can win every game when it has to go @ Cal, @ Oregon, @ Washington, and @ ASU, along with UCLA at home? I think they come out of there with 1 loss.

Time will tell but against real opponents Carroll can put together one helluva game plan. Every year they hype the USC v Cal or Oregon games and every year it's a complete blowout. If I was a SC fan my only concern would be Booty and his ability to lose games for them when he gets pressured, otherwise, they have one helluva team put together. I don't really like them and the fans I deal with at work piss me off but I am not so blinded by that to see they are pretty strong.

I am a homer.

I will agree with you there.

I'm worried about the purdue game in a couple of weeks- saine probably won't be ready, so hopefully beanie will be full strength. they're gonna put up some points with their spread attack, and granted their competition so far as been subpar, a night game on the road is going to be tough. we might have to play from behind, which we haven't really done except for the start of the 2nd half against washington. Also, I think Penn state is one of those jekyl/hyde teams that plays much better at home than away, so i wouldn't be so quick to discount them with it being another night away game. i could easily see a repeat of two years ago where both defenses come to play and the game is decided by a couple of plays- boekman's going to have to be extra careful to avoid bad turnovers.

As for Purdue, Tressel has a good way of dealing with the spread, it may get us in the first half but the second half will be ours. Our defense is really agressive and just hits hard, sooner or later the receivers start thinking twice or looking for the defenders and the quarterback doesn't really want to run the ball because of the hits. That's how we dealt with Miami in 2002, that's how we dealt with Washington this year, and it's something that scUM has yet to understand.

As for Penn State, I agree, going to their house at night could get ugly, but we'll see, there's a lot of time between now and then.

The Penn State game will be a tough atmosphere, but fortunately after this weekend it doesn't look like they're as good of a team as many of us had thought. Morelli is mistake-prone (understate much?) and against this defense, that is going to be fatal.

I posted in response to a question of what do you think the top 5 will look like at the end of December. I clearly dont think we are #3 in the country right now. That was posted as a "how do you see things playing out in the next few months" projection. I don't see us losing this year, and so at the end of the season I think that we will be one of three undefeated teams.

I know USC is pretty strong. I think that they are the second most talented team in the country, behind LSU. But I don't think that they can go undefeated, and no matter how close the loss, I don't see any pollster putting a 1 loss USC team ahead of an undefeated Ohio State. I think that USC is much better than OSU, but winning @ Washington, @ Cal, @ Oregon, and @ ASU would be one hell of an accomplishment, and I dont think it will happen. Thus, at the end of the season, OSU will be ranked ahead of USC.

And btw, I think if you put Miami and Nebraska on a neutral field that Miami wins by two touchdowns. Nebraska is horribly overrated and Miami, while they got embarassed by OU, is a good team.

Agreed about Morelli. And frankly I'm not that worried about any big ten QBs this year... as the song tells us Chad Henne is a joke , Morelli is mistake prone, Juice Williams worries me a bit, but I think he could easily go back to his inaccuracy after getting popped a couple times and start looking to run first, and Purdue can be stopped with a little physicality. I really think the key has been getting after the QB. Other than YSU where the D was solid but not as agressive, QBs have looked panicked in thier throwing. The running ability helps, but its not like the Buckeye defenders are stuck in sand.

As far as the Polls are concerned though I do agree with the top five, but I honestly feel the Buckeyes should be at six, call me a homer but really Cal has played no one and will lose this weekend to Oregon. Texas has been schoddy and inconsistent at best... Where as tOSU has been playing with power and consistency in the last two games. Honestly its not as big a deal as each will lose and soon. In the end I honestly see Oklahoma, tOSU, and Clemson Having the paths of least resistance of the remaining unbeatens. But either way its going to be a fun year for college football

After the Mildcats a few years back I don't ever over-estimate our team, the problem with the bucks, as I saw in our NC game, is that when they expect to win, they lose. Tressel has done a good job at keeping this under control, but we've seen the players get too full of themselves in the past. I hope we win out, but having Penn State at their house and scUM at their house I am keeping my fingers crossed.

We'll see what happens, in my opinion USC is a lot like tOSU, they lose games they really shouldn't lose, they roll in to the little games that they expect to roll over and get bit by them. The games last year that they lost, Oregon State and UCLA, weren't superior teams. They just put out everything they had and USC's arrogance bit them in the ass.

Carroll is a great coach, he will be showing his team those videos anytime they demonstrate a bit of arrogance, where the game is played isn't that big of an issue with USC, unless Oregon is a lot better than the world thinks, then USC has more talent.

Oregon, to me, is a wild card, if they can demonstrate that talent throughout the season, they, very well, could be an elite team.

And btw, I think if you put Miami and Nebraska on a neutral field that Miami wins by two touchdowns. Nebraska is horribly overrated and Miami, while they got embarassed by OU, is a good team.

We'll agree to disagree here, USC could have put 50+ on Nebraska but didn't, the last two touchdowns make that game appear closer than it was, Carroll was being nice because he was at their house, that game was close for about 1 quarter, after that USC just basically had their way with them. Oklahoma has a reputation for running up the score when they can. Nebraska sucks and Cryami sucks, let's just leave it at that.

Time will tell, I will be wearing my scarlet and grey all season and hoping for the best, but I am not willing to say "we're going to go undefeated" just yet, after all, last year our toughest Big Ten opponent was Zook.

Yeah you make good points, I just didn't want anyone to think that I was ranking the Bucks as 3rd right now, because I think we are maybe 5 or probably 6. But by the end of the season, I think we very well could be undefeated.

I hope you're right, and I hope we beat Wiscy, Penn State and scUM by a good margin to show that we're not the rest of the Big Ten, they may be down but that doesn't show us. Right now I think that hurts us, and it's not really fair to the team, if we run the table, and do our business I think this year we could get screwed, but time will tell, Tressel just needs to keep the guys focused and see what the outcome is. Nothing was better than 2002, when I heard people say "we should let a one loss team play miami so we will at least have a game" and us showing Miami what pain was.

As far as facing Purdue and stopping their offense, I think I feel much more confident going into West Lafayette now than I did a couple weeks ago. Granted, playing NU doesn't tell us too much, but these guys are playing inspired football now. When your D-line can occupy their O-line, our zone blitzing scheme starts to work and JL and Co. can start to really put the hurt on their QB. When that happens, Purdue has to put in an extra blocker, removing a WR from the field and their offense becomes much more conservative. Not to mention Jenkins, Washington, and Chekwa could all shut down Bryant at this point.

Same goes with our defense stopping MSU and PSU - the Lions and the Spartans run nothing special and our guys are very disciplined. Best of all, PSU has an O that is prone to making mistakes and we have improved on taking advantage of them. However, MSU and PSU will be challenging for our offense because they will bring the pass rush, and more importantly, have the personnel to give our O-line a tough game. Dantonio has always given our offense fits, and now he finally has the horses to play us straight-up, rather than rely in scheme alone. PSU at night is tough any way you cut it.

We've got a WVU guy, a Florida guy, and a USC guy, now all we need are OU and LSU posters and we can round out the top five for this discussion! :)
