Thomas Holley is one of the top interior defensive players in the entire country. The 6-4, 300-pounder from Abraham Lincoln (Brooklyn, N.Y.), recently added a fifth star via 247Sports.com to his resume after showing out at the Opening ? an invite-only nationally televised combine event held at Nike headquarters in Beaverton, Ore. NJ.com caught up with Holley, Monday night, as he was playing the latest version of NCAA Football by EASports. Holley discussed the Opening experience, some of his top schools and where Rutgers fits into it all.

"I had a real good showing at the Opening, I'm proud of that," said Holley, who holds offers, nationally. "I definitely was one of the more consistent defensive players out there. I was working hard, doing my thing, making it hard for the offensive guys to stop me."

He did indeed. Holley was a terror during the 1-on-1 portion of the combine, and ran a 5.1-second 40-yard dash and 4.7-second shuttle at 300 pounds. He also logged a 42-5 in the power toss and displayed a 28-inch vertical leap. So, it's obvious why just about every top program in the country is coveting his services. But the Scarlet Knights just so happen to be one of a few teams that stands out to the elite defender.

"I still talk to coach Panagos when I can," said Holley. "He tells me how everything would be if I was to go to Rutgers. I might visit this summer. It depends on how everything goes because with football, I have a real busy schedule. But I'll try to get something in."

Holley has already set foot on the Rutgers campus on two occasions. And besides the Opening, the most recent unofficial visits he's taken have been to Notre Dame and Ohio State, a couple months back. Holley hopes to make his decision before the beginning of the 2013 high school season, although nothing is set in stone.

"I'm gonna try to do it before but if I need more time, then I'll just take as much time as I need," he said. "I'm in no rush."

Holley tells NJ.com that he hasn't officially released a top five list of schools yet. But there are a handful of schools that come to mind as potential collegiate destinations based upon his listing of the "the pros and cons" when comparing institutions. Those schools are Rutgers, Ohio State, Notre Dame, Florida and Penn State, in no particular order.

Holley broke down the pros of a few schools he's considering:

Ohio State: "Just their need for lineman and, at the same time, their alumni base; how big it is and how they take care of their players. It's one thing to have your players graduate, move on and be successful. But to have them come back and give to the school on a regular basis, that says a lot."

Abraham Lincoln (Brooklyn, N.Y.) defensive tackle, Thomas Holley, was featured by NJ.com earlier today. The 6-4, 300-pounder mentioned Rutgers as one of his top schools and it appears they have a legitimate shot. In talking to him, I get a feeling that Ohio State and Penn State are doing very well here, and wouldn't be surprised if the Nittany Lions pull this off. But the Scarlet Knights, I feel, have an outside chance. But they have to get Holley on campus for an official visit to increase the odds.

Syracuse should have better feel on where it stands with top prospect Thomas Holley within weeks

Syracuse, N.Y. ? It is not unusual for Thomas Holley to open his mailbox and find a letter from Syracuse defensive line coach Tim Daoust, complete with a short comment "to brighten my day up."

In the high-stakes game of recruiting a blue-chip prospect like Holley, Daoust's letters are not uncommon. In fact, it's an unofficial part of his job description.

Syracuse's dreams of reaching the pinnacle of the ACC may hinge on being able to land players of Holley's caliber. Colleague Chris Carlson crunched some numbers back in June, and they're pretty self-explanatory.

A consistent title-contender is predicated on talent.

For Syracuse, it wouldn't hurt to look at New York. And that means Holley, the 6-foot-4, 285-pound stud defensive tackle prospect from Lincoln High School in Brooklyn.

Holley was on campus Wednesday and Thursday, checking out preseason practice and chatting with coaches, players and Floyd Little.

On Aug. 18, Holley said he will sit down with his high school coach, his mother and his uncle and sort out his recruiting board. Almost everyone in the nation is grappling for Holley's services.

He said he will be in attendance for the Penn State-Syracuse game Aug. 31 at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey. Both schools want him, as does Ohio State, Notre Dame, Rutgers and a host of others. He said he hopes to make a verbal commitment by the start of the season.

"But the only way I'm going to do that," Holley said, "is if my mom takes a trip up to some of the schools I went to that I liked that she hasn't been to. Her giving her child away, she wants to make sure she feels comfortable."

Rutgers seems to be our strongest competition for both Holley and Noah Brown. I'd like to get them both to Columbus, but if we're going to lose them I wouldn't mind their going to Rutgers. Strengthening the new members of the B1G would be a good thing.

It seems like the coaches have passed on brown, he has yet to receive an official offer. I hope that's not true. Hes more than likely headed to rutgers. Holley is a kid that just needs time, IMO. I could still see him joing curtis Samuel and coming to Osu. I hope our coaches put the full court press on him, and eventually Meyer takes over his recruiting.

Right now I would say the Irish are pretty close with OSU still. Jay Hayes is nearby and keeps in touch with him regularly. He's been hearing good things there. Most predictions are split pretty even thus far for OSU and Irish too. Still, in the end I think Urban will reel him in. Irish have struck out on a number of their DT/NG prospects the last couple years, can't seem to find an outstanding replacement for Louis Nix going into next year. I have a feeling Holley will be no different, he'll be a monster I think once he hones his game. Hard to believe he only has a year under his belt.
