'11 IL C/PF Anthony Davis (Kentucky Signee)

Absolutely no one thinks he's going to play center at 185. He alreday weighs more than 185 and is probably right around 200 lbs right now. How much he gains by the time the college season starts next November is anybody's guess, but I don't think 225 is very unrealistic.

That being said, I think he'll be a PF wherever he goes, but with his length, quickness and shot blocking ability, he certainly could man the post on defense. How much does B10 first teamer JJ weigh? I doubt its more than 220 and I think Purdue could have made a run at a final 4 and national championship had Hummel not been injured. You don't see a lot of big talented centers in college because they tend to go to the NBA early, so yes, I think you can get away with a 220 lb shot blocking center in college.
Totally agree. You don't need to be a monster weight wise to be a good defensive center in the Big Ten or in any other conference. In fact, I would take a more athletic center who is lighter over a big guy who might be bigger weight wise.

So you're not gonna play Manute Bol at center because he's 185 soaking wet and giving a midget a piggyback ride? That's the silliest thing I've ever heard.

Who you have on your team dictates where you play on the court. If Anthony's one of the best centers on the team, he'll play center. Koufos wasn't a center, but he was one of the best 2 that we had, so more often than not, that's where he played.

And on that note, let's get back to Anthony, shall we? This is his thread after all...

Hopefully, Anthhony's freshman year the Buckeyes will have Sully at the 5, so Anthony is free to play on the perimeter, and in '12 we'll bring another big in as well as Sully, so Davis can continue to do his damage all over the court (I can dream can't I?)

Really though I love the idea of a guy like Anthony in the S&G, as highly touted as our bigs have been the last 4-5 years, none of them have brought the same skill set. KK probably was closest, but his athleticism was nowhere near Anthony's.

All that these kids have to do is to look how Coach Matta and Staff have sent guys to the NBA and they can tell that this is a great opportunity. I think (oh hello again Captain Obvious) that the Evan Turner saga is the greatest example of how this group of coaches can develop a kid into a star, he went from a middling rating in HS (behind his HS teamate in a lot of scouts eyes) to a solid contributor as a Frosh, to two years later the consensus Player of the year.

Although I much more prefer having the Buck's class pretty well filled by this time of year, this is awful fun too, having so many top prospects all looking at the Buckeyes.

Chicago's Davis still considering DePaul
By Scott Powers

MERRILLVILLE, Ind. -- DePaul basketball coach Oliver Purnell promised when he was hired that he would turn the program's recruiting around.

Purnell and the Blue Demons took a giant step in that direction on Thursday when Chicago Perspectives 6-10 forward Anthony Davis, ESPN's No. 12-ranked recruit in the Class of 2011, said he was still considering DePaul as a possible destination.

Davis previously announced he had cut his final list down to Kentucky, Ohio State and Syracuse. Recently, though, DePaul came into the picture.

"DePaul's very intriguing," Davis said at the ChicagoHoops.com End of Season Showdown. "It's really nice. They're local. My family could see every game. The Big East is a tough conference. It's really exciting. Coach Purnell seems like a nice guy. When I talked to him on the phone, he seemed like a nice guy."

The schools Davis has focused in on do have a lot in common.

"All of them fit my style of play," said Davis, who averaged 30 points and 12 rebounds last season. "They all like to run, get up and down. Their big men come down and shoot. They don't have their big men in one spot."

Davis plans on beginning his college visits after the club travel season ends.

And I've never seen him listed at 185 since his HS season ended. Scout has him at 190, Rivals 220 (though I doubt that one a bit) and Lebron camp 187.

But, you never answered the question. How much did JJ weigh upon HS graduation? Is he playing center in the B10. Has he been a 1st team all B10 player the past 2 seasons playing center for his team and barely weighing north of 200 lbs? Would Purdue have been a legit Final 4 contender last year had Hummel not gotten injured? Is Purdue a favorite to win the B10 and compete for a national title with a thin, maybe 220 lb center?

Again, I don't think Davis would play center at OSU because he is being recuited for his skill/size combination and he'd be a perfect face up 4 in Matta's system. But arguing that he's only going to weigh 185 a year and a half from now when he already weighs more than that is just silly. Teenagers that hit growth spurts tend to gain weight after they stop growing. He's got almost a year and a half to put on some weight and its not difficult to believe he would weigh 210-220 by the time he steps on the floor for his first college game.

I am not even going to get into a debate about how much they basketball player weighs compared to an important or whomever. However, regarding Davis, and I don't know how much weight he is going to put on by the time he gets to college but I really don't care.

I see no reason why he could not play the 5 position with his athletic ability no matter what the other center might weigh. Offensively he does not have to stay underneath the basket but can roam out and shoot jump shots or whatever Matta wanted to do. This might help open up the middle for our swing guys to take it to the rack.

I guess we shall see where he plays if he comes to Ohio State and I think we have a very good chance of getting him.
