Chicago high school basketball sensation Anthony Davis showed off his talents during Thursday's tournament play at the King City Classic at the Wolstein Center.

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- The must-see recruit all spring and into the summer has been fast-rising Anthony Davis from Chicago. It was no different the opening day of the King City Classic basketball tournament at Cleveland State's Wolstein Center.

In little more than a year, Davis has grown from a 6-2 unknown guard into a 6-9 forward with multiple skills. Unlike many who have had big growth spurts in the past, Davis said he has not had issues with joint pain. His biggest challenge is dealing with the phone calls from coaches wanting his services.

"A lot of coaches calling every day," he said Thursday. "I just had to cut [the list] down, so I could look at specific schools to see what they had to offer."

Most of Davis' peers at the King City Classic have been on the radar of major college coaches for two or three years. But sitting in an arena with Tom Izzo, Jim Boeheim, Billy Donovan, Tubby Smith, Mike Krzyzewski, Sean Miller, Roy Williams, Gary Williams and other iconic college coaches can be daunting for the uninitiated.

"I didn't really look up there," Davis said. "I just kind of saw a crowd. But I did see Coach K."

Davis is a consensus top-10 recruit by all the major recruiting services. He has already shortened his list of potential teams down to three: Kentucky, Syracuse and Ohio State. Davis said the schools fit his style of play, and all utilize their forwards both inside and outside.

It's been a whirlwind year that has Davis going through a change of fortunes on the basketball court, but also a lifestyle change. He's gone from wearing jeans to almost exclusively sweat pants, and jumping from a size 13 shoe to a 17.

"A lot of stores don't have my [shoe] size, so now I have to order things online," Davis said.

Anthony Davis, a 6-9 player considered the top center in the King City Classic by the Hoop Scoop recruiting service, includes Kentucky in his three-school list (with Ohio State and Syracuse). He considers himself more of a small forward, perhaps a lingering mind-set caused by his 7-inch growth spurt in the past year. He sees himself as a hybrid player well suited to Calipari's dribble-drive offense.

"Because of my height, I have to be a big man," he said. "But because of my skills, I can still use that guard mentality to get by my defender."

Standout players

Anthony Davis (Chicago/Perspective)
2011, PF, 6-foot-9, 187 pounds
The versatile forward with a 7-foot-2 wing span continued to improve and produce. What's so impressive about Davis is that he only wants to make the right play for his team and he always seems to have great sequences throughout the game. For example, he will block a shot, start a fast break, sprint the floor and follow up his teammate's missed shot for an offensive rebound and a put-back. On defense, he protects the rim with his ability to block shots or change his opponent's attempts. He is also an active rebounder, but his ability to handle the ball and score sets him apart from most bigs.

In his top 3: no school from his home state, we're the closest school to his home, no Louisville or MSU, and he's actively talked to Sam Thompson about the possibility of both playing together at OSU.

The only thing that gives me any doubt about this recruitment is WWW.

NORTH AUGUSTA, S.C. ? Anthony Davis has cut his list to three schools but he may be adding North Carolina very soon. Carolina head coach Roy Williams watched the 6-foot-10, 195-pound Chicago Perspectives forward put up 18 points, 7 rebounds, 5 steals and 4 blocks in a 55-34 blowout victory Monday over Team Florida here at the Peach Jam.
?I hope he?s taking notes on me,? Davis said of Williams after the game. ?I just have to play hard, try to show him what I can do on the offensive end and on the defensive end.?
Ohio State coach Thad Matta was also front and center at the Riverview Park Activities Center.
ZAGSBLOG first reported that Davis had cut his list to Ohio State, Syracuse and Kentucky but that list could expand to include Carolina after the Peach Jam.
?It?s not final,? Davis said. ?It?s just the top three that I chose for right now just to get some of the schools off my list but overall the schools could change.?
Davis said he last heard from Carolina assistant Steve Robinson about three weeks ago. Asked if he would consider Carolina if they offered, Davis said, ?I would, yes.?
He added: ?Great basketball program, great academic program. It just feels good for North Carolina to call. They said they were ready to offer me after the Peach Jam, as well as Duke.?
(Duke is more or less set on bigs for 2011 and appears to be focusing solely on guard Austin Rivers.)
In the past year, Davis has gone from a 6-2 shooting guard to an explosive 6-10 big man with guard skills. His recruitment has taken off and he?s now ranked No. 8 nationally by Rivals.
?He grew 8 inches in a year,? Mean Streets coach Jevon Mamon said. ?With his guard skills that he possesses and because he is able to do that as a big and [with] his length defensively, he can do some great things because of his length.
Mamon added: ?His potential is through the roof. The sky?s the limit for him. Tremendous work ethic, always willing to learn and do the correct thing. He wants to learn and always wants to get better.?
Davis said he?s been motivated by seeing friends like Wayne Blackshear, Mike Shaw and Mycheal Henry shoot up in the rankings.
?We all go against each other all the time,? Davis said. ?It would be a good matchup so I decided to play AAU and that?s how I got my name out there. And it feels good.?
As for where Davis ends up, time will tell.
?We don?t know,? Mamon said. ?We?ll sit down with the family and discuss it with them and take it from there.?

Day two standouts

Anthony Davis, PF, Mean Streets- A thin and mobile four man, Davis changes the game in so many ways. A confident and skilled scorer with a well developed array of post moves inside the lane, he can also face up defenders and bury soft jumpers. It's true that he can be pushed around a bit, but he makes up for it by challenging shots and deflecting tons of passes and loose balls. His "final" three is Ohio State, Kentucky and Syracuse but North Carolina coach Roy Williams has been present for all of his games and is trying to make one last push.

Worried about Calipari and $$!

1) Anthony Davis, 6-9, 187, PF, Perspectives Charter High (Ill.) ? He?s got an 86-inch wingspan and there?s truly not much he can?t do. He?s able to step out and knock down 3?s, he can score in the post, he runs the court extremely well and can impact the game on the defensive end as well with his ability to rebound and block shots. Kentucky, Syracuse and Ohio State are his three finalists and, according to sources, the Wildcats are the leaders at this point.

Is Anthony Davis The No. 1 Player in the Class of 2011?
Thursday, July 15, 2010
Posted By Chris Littmann

These are the kinds of plays Davis makes that have some people wondering whether he's the top player in the nation. Davis is currently ranked No. 8 in the 2011 class by Rivals. Scout lists him as the No. 3 power forward in the class. Kentucky, Ohio State and Syracuse lead for his services. The players most commonly placed ahead of him are Quincy Miller (undecided), Austin Rivers (undecided) and Michael Gilchrist (UK)

The buzz about moving Davis up to the No. 1 spot is getting loud. Our own Mike DeCourcy has decreed it so on Twitter. I also talked with DeCourcy -- who has seen his fair share of Davis' game in the last month -- by phone this afternoon, and he raved about Davis being well on his way to being an elite defender while also having good offensive skills. Maybe not the shooting range of some other recruits to pile up ridiculous point totals, but the lanky 6-foot-10 forward has ceiling for days, so that makes up for any current scoring deficiencies.

Dave Telep is starting to buy into Davis. Evan Daniels is, too. Fox Sports' Jeff Goodman is as well.

If what Davis said in June to ESPN holds true, he'll make his decision sometime soon -- possibly in late July or early August. For now, bask in more of Davis' highlights or watch the Peach Jam Championship tonight at 7 p.m. ET on ESPNU. The game features future Florida Gator and top 10 recruit Brad Beal among other notable names.

Davis could decide soon
2011 PF Anthony Davis

6-foot-10 power forward Anthony Davis is the No. 12 overall prospect in the Class of 2011, according to ESPN Recruiting's rankings. And according to Adam Zagoria of ZagsBlog.com, he could be making a college decision sometime this month.

In his ESPN.com chat wrap from July 13, Jay Bilas praised Davis' work at the Nike LeBron James Skills Academy. "The best high school players were Nick Faust and Anthony Davis," he reported.

Davis has narrowed his list to Kentucky, Ohio State and Syracuse, and wants to visit UK and the 'Cuse before making his decision (he's already been to Ohio State). Depending on when he can make those visits, he'll be deciding on his college either in July or August. Zagoria also reports that Davis may take additional visits to other schools that offer, including North Carolina, which is rumored to be interested in the power forward.

None of the three above schools currently have a power forward signed for the Class of 2011, so he could be a fit at any school. However, if he picks Kentucky, that could have an impact on several of the other highly rated big men who are considering the 'Cats (we wrote about several of them earlier). You can bet Thad Matta would love to have him in Columbus as a Jared Sullinger replacement in a year (in the event that the prized freshman forward goes one-and-done).

ESPN Recruiting: Paul Biancardi

Davis making a strong name for himself.

"Much has been written about Anthony Davis (Chicago/Perspectives Charter) recently and it is all deserved. He is just beginning to scratch the surface of his tremendous upside and he continues to improve every time he steps on the floor. The 6-9 power forward with an enormous wing span is extremely versatile and highly skilled. He also keeps himself hungry and humble, which will move him ahead of his peers as time goes on. Davis is making a case to be a top-3 player in the Class of 2011."

ANTHONY DAVIS CONSIDERING NORTH CAROLINA?

Anthony Davis Sr. said that he and his son would sit down and talk about North Carolina.

Anthony Davis Jr., had already determined a top three of Syracuse, Ohio State and Kentucky prior to the start of the July recruiting period ? even though Ohio State and Kentucky had yet to see him play.

Now, the Tar Heels have tried to get involved with the 6-foot-9 skilled Chicago native, and he said they currently sit fourth on his list.

"Right now, I'm set with three schools, but I haven't ruled out adding another school," the younger Davis said. "North Carolina is fourth on my list right now."

Davis said he intends to visit all three schools after finishing up in July and may also take a trip to Chapel Hill.

Keep an eye on .

Forward Anthony Davis has been the fastest rising prospect in the Class of 2011 this spring and summer. Virtually unknown on the recruiting trail back in January, Davis has shot up to No. 8 in Scout.com's rankings. He's rated No. 5 among rising seniors by Rivals.

Part of the reason for Davis' rise: a growth spurt shot him from 6-foot-2 to 6-foot-10. And suddenly his elite skills and overall versatility became much more valuable to big-time programs. Davis, who plays his high school ball in Chicago, named three schools - Ohio State, Kentucky and Syracuse - as finalists in his recruitment back in June and said he hoped to make a final decision by the end of July. But increased attention from North Carolina has piqued Davis' interest with the quick and active big man now waiting to see whether Tar Heels coach Roy Williams will offer him a scholarship at the end of this month's live recruiting period.

If Williams sees enough from Davis to believe he could fit in the Heels' plans, don't be surprised if Carolina sneaks on to the list of schools that Davis will visit in the near future.

Anthony Davis | 6-10 | PF | 2011
The man known as the “human headband” came through with the dunk of the tournament, while leading his Meanstreets squad to the elite 8. After growing seven inches in the past year, we were on hand when he EXPLODED on the national scene at Spiece in May. The incredibly lanky Davis blocked a ton of shots, was a beast on the front of the press, and surprised some with his ability to shoot the rock from the perimeter. His play was so good in fact, that many recruiting analysts even flirted with putting him No. 1 in the class. The Chicago native is surely Austin Riversa coveting one, narrowing his list to Kentucky, Ohio State, and Syracuse with North Carolina looking to get in late and stir the pot.

Where will Anthony Davis End up?
Wednesday July 21, 2010

I can't wait to see next time he talks to the media what school he says first and if it changes. I think Kentucky has really moved hard on him. Not saying it's a done deal but they are really after him.

Gilchrist, Teague & Davis at Kentucky?
Posted on Jul 22, 2010

NORTH AUGUSTA, S.C. ? Kentucky already has commitments from the No. 1 and No. 5 players in the Class of 2011 in Michael Gilchrist and Marquis Teague.

Could John Calipari add No. 8 Anthony Davis as well?

?I gotta get on him, huh?? Gilchrist said last week at the Peach Jam. ?ASAP, huh??

Rivals currently ranks the 6-foot-10, 195-pound Davis No. 8 in the class, but he is in the conversation for No. 1 after the way he?s played this summer.

The latest word from the Davis camp is that he planned to visit his top three schools ? Kentucky, Syracuse and Ohio State ? before potentially taking other visits.

North Carolina head coach Roy Williams watched several of Davis? games at the Peach Jam and figures to track him during this second evaluation period as well.

?I want to visit my top three first and then go visit any other schools that might be interested that?s not in my top three,? Davis, out of Chicago Perspectives, said last week.

Davis said he last heard from Carolina assistant Steve Robinson several weeks ago. Asked if he would consider Carolina if they offered, Davis said, ?I would, yes.?

Still, Kentucky has to be considered a good bet to land Davis, who has designs on playing in the pros.

?John Wall, DeMarcus Cousins, Eric Bledsoe, all of them went to the league,? Davis said of Kentucky?s last freshmen group. ?It?s just a great program, so that?s why I want to go to the NBA.?

Anthony Davis Rules Out North Carolina
Posted on Jul 23, 2010

Roy Williams spent a good deal of time at the Peach Jam last week watching 6-foot-10 Chicago Perspectives forward Anthony Davis, but the big man is not returning the love.

?It looks like North Carolina is not going to be in the recruiting process with us,? Anthony Davis Sr. said Friday by phone from the Hoop City Classic in Kansas City.

?Anthony said he doesn?t think it?s going to be a good fit for him and we support whatever decision he makes.?

Anthony Jr. huddled with his father Thursday night to make the decision.

?It was just a decision we made last night,? Anthony Sr. said.

He is still considering three schools ? Kentucky, Syracuse and Ohio State.

?They?re all equal,? Anthony Sr. said.

?He said he?s still going through the motions with the three schools. He?s still gonna take a couple looks. We should have a decision hopefully soon.?

No visit dates have been set but the father said the family would like to visit all three campuses during Anthony Sr.?s vacation time.

?No dates still as of yet,? he said. ?We?re still working on our itinerary.?

They plan to see all three schools, though.

?I think we?re gonna visit all three because my wife and I want to see Ohio State also,? Anthony Sr. said. ?We?re gonna take trips to all three of them.?

No timetable has been set on a decision.

?Right now we don?t have a timetable,? he said. ?We?re still working on an itinerary, trying to get some dates together and fit it with my vacation time.?
