'08 WV OL Josh Jenkins (West Virginia Signee)

A line with Josh Jenkins along with Brewster, Adams and Shugarts is gonna be downright unfair! Not to mention Connor Smith! It's like an NFL calibre line for the next 3-4 years. My mom could play QB with a line like that and win the Heisman!

:oh:

Imagine Saine and Pryor running behind that. That could be the most athletic backfield College football has seen in quite sometime.

So if JJ comes to OSU, when do you guys think he has a shot at getting the starting job?

Anything is possible...but I wouldn't bet on it.

The 2-deep as of Nov. 25th:

Left Tackle

75 Alex Boone** 6-8 313 JR.

73 Josh Kerr 6-5 276 R-Fr.

Left Guard

71 Steve Rehring ** 6-8 345 JR.

78 Dan Dye 6-3 277 5th/Sr.

Center

64 Jimmy Cordle 6-4 302 SO.

66 Andrew Moses 6-3 272 So.

Right Guard

63 Ben Person** 6-4 321 JR.

77 Connor Smith 6-5 317 Rf-Fr.

Right Tackle

74 Kirk Barton *** 6-6 300 5TH/SR.

70 Bryant Browning 6-4 311 R-Fr.

There aren?t many easy avenues to starting right away for any of the Block O. I?m definitely not saying that any or all of them can?t do it (double negative), I?m just saying that there are a lot of entrenched guys in front of them with experience.

Obviously Barton will be gone, so RT is open. However, Connor Smith and Bryant Browning played a lot this season and will likely get a shot at RT. Browning is a leg-up having spent time in the 2-deep at tackle specifically. Looking at Connor?s thread, it was said that he needed to work on his footwork to get a look at tackle, but, one would think, that the 2-deep at RT could easily consist of one or both Browning and Smith (maybe not in that order). Look for Adams or Shugarts to give both a run by fall-ball though. Neither of the frosh will scare the older guys in spring ball.

IMO, the OL having the weakest season (from a pretty darn good OL season) is Ben Person, who sports two varsity letters. IF there was a place for one of Brew or Jenkins to slide in, it would could be at RG, especially in the 2-deep. I thought that Brew might have a chance to be the one to compete right away for RG, given his very early enrollment, or, if Cordle could be moved to RG, at Center, but, with his shoulder, he might not get the jump that he otherwise would. Of course, this also assumes that Smith is somehow out of the mix for G in favor of a T spot.

I do think that any or all 4 of them could get enough good reps between now and September to end up behind an older guy in the 2-deep, and we all know that means they will be on the field a lot. Adams or Shugarts could compete with Kerr by fall after a lot of work adopting the system. There is an obvious hole behind Rehring that any of the Block O could compete for (I don?t think Shugarts or Adams would mind playing out of position a little to be in the 2-deep) and Brewster, once healthy, should be neck-and-neck with Even Blankenship for the 2nd-string Center position.

Another obvious wild card that I didn?t mention is Boone going pro, but there hasn?t been a whole lot of chatter in that direction lately, as far as I know.
Edit: other wild cards include Skinner and Miller (moved to Tackle)

Imo Shugarts is the most college ready OL technique-wise we have coming in but Adams has the most potential, with Brewster being the best overall. I think Shugarts could start right away at RT (not a cinch but possible). I think guard is going to be tough to walk right into with Skinner, Smith, Blankenship, and Mitchum backing up Rehring and Person. Browning is also a possibility at guard. There are health issues with the 3 PA guys at guard, so I wouldn't rule out JJ playing some. As far as just JJ is concerned though, I think a RS year would be the best thing for him. Great prospect and has a lot of potential but I don't see him as college ready yet. I can't wait to see how he does in the AA game against the great competition. Beyond that, OL is not an easy position to start at from day 1 in D1 football. There is a lot to pickup mentally (that goes for all positions but you don't see too many true freshman in at OL or DT as opposed to RB, WR, LB, DB, etc.).

Smith and Browning are looking pretty good out of all the non-starters. And that's from the fact that they are on the 2-deep ahead of everyone else. It's going to be interesting to see how Skinner battles back from injury since he was pretty much our sixth lineman in '06. The more bodies the better!

Rhering might move to the RT spot when Barton's done. I see Brewster competing for the LG spot next season, with Browning, Connor Smith and Blackenship. My only concern is what happens if Boone goes pro? That will leave a crucial LT spot to a first year starter, maybe even a frosh.

Sorry I don't have it at hand, but Brewster was quoted that he wanted to compete for the RT position next year. He may be athletic enough to do it. If Boone leaves, he may just end up being a tackle for a year or two.

Wow, that's news to me. I was under the impression that he was the best center of the block-O guys. Where did you hear Brewster say that?

I can't pull it up anymore, but when scout was free for a week it was in one of the "Brew Crew" articles (his, I'm sure). He mentioned going for the RT position next year, but said he was sure he would end up at Center later in his career.

BTW...does it make anyone feel better than when he mentioned coaches and getting to know them..."many people, they don't know Jim Tressel, they don't know Urban Meyer", then when talking about schools he said "Ohio State, Florida." Seems like OSU is top of mind, then Florida.

Actually, when he named the top three, the second was Florida State, not Florida, with OSU at the top and WV "in there somewhere." It's in the long video just titled "Josh Jenkins," around when the progress bar hits the middle of the volume scale (sorry, no time markers).

Well, anyway, seems like OSU is top of mind. I hope that is true. Seems like a good young man, and a heck of a football player. He would be a nice addition to the Buckeye family.
