Safety is the most important position battle for next season.

With the numerous deadly interpretations of spread and Air Raid offenses in modern college football, the free safety has become one of the most prized positions. It's so valuable in fact, that it's often where defenses will send their most experienced and/or most athletic members of the secondary. According to Ian Boyd:

It's interesting that we haven't seen more teams, especially in the Big 12 where safeties are regularly abused, opt to move their better DBs to the FS position. Ideally this position would be held by a veteran DB who has excellent range, understands offensive concepts, and is a willing and reliable tackler. For many teams, filling that role would likely require moving one of the better, more well rounded, and intelligent corners inside.

Ohio State doesn't differentiate between free and strong safeties on their depth chart. But with both Tyvis Powell and Vonn Bell leaving early for the NFL, the Buckeyes will have two new, relatively inexperienced starters at the most valuable position on the defense.

It's not much hyperbole to say that the play of the secondary -- and the safeties in particular -- may decide the fate of the entire 2016 season. The Buckeyes open with three-straight offenses from the Air Raid school -- Bowling Green, Tulsa, and Oklahoma (not to mention at least Indiana and Penn State later on in conference play). These teams ranked eleventh, 51st, and seventh respectively in offensive S&P+ last season. So the two new starting safeties will be thrown directly in to the fire to start the season.

Redshirt sophomore Malik Hooker looks like the early leader of the safeties. Hooker seems to be one of the diamond-in-the-rough former three-star recruits that the Buckeyes have uncovered in the past -- similar to Darron Lee in that he was truly just a high-ceilinged athlete without a position when he first got to Ohio State. Hooker didn't start playing football until his junior year of high school and projected as either a safety or a wide receiver, but could have been buried behind higher-rated defensive back classmates Erick Smith and Dame Webb. If his two-interception spring game performance is any indication, that won't be the case.

Here's the lineup of potential two-deep contributors at safety and nickel:

Player Year 247 Comp Rating
Cam Burrows Sr .9719
Damon Webb Jr .982
Erick Smith Jr .9665
Malik Hooker So .8858
Eric Glover-Williams Jr .9523
Jordan Fuller Fr .9377

Averaging it out, the group as a whole has a .9494 247 Composite rating. If you take out Hooker's three-star rating, the group is bumped to .9621.

The current reports suggest Hooker and Damon Webb are the front-runners, but several guys, including Cam Burrows and Erick Smith, were both injured during spring practice. Eric Glover-Williams shared starting time this spring with Malik Hooker, and Webb has the versatility to move around the secondary between safety and nickel if need-be.

According to Boyd, the wide spacing of Baylor-like Air Raid teams makes it difficult for the secondary to not only swarm to receivers on the edge, but also to limit running backs if the defensive line isn't able to make the tackle at or near the line. This responsibility often falls on the free safety.

Therefore, elite athleticism -- including lateral quickness and straight-line speed -- will be paramount, but so will play recognition and system experience, all of which this group should have.

The data suggests returning experience is more important on the defensive side of the ball than on offense and that returning passes broken up is correlated with high defensive S&P+. That's obviously low for next year's group.

Talent won't be an issue for the safeties, nor should experience in the system, as all but incoming freshman Jordan Fuller have been on the team for at least two years. But game experience is another story, and this group's early development against Bowling Green, Tulsa, and Oklahoma will determine whether this year's supposedly-rebuilding group of Buckeyes can reach the playoff again.

Welcome to Quick Hits, a new feature we are rolling out to highlight the most recent athletes who received offers to play football at Ohio State.

Emory Jones – QB – Class of 2018

Blessed & honored to say I just received my dream offer from the Ohio State University ❗❗⭕#GoBuckeyes #14 pic.twitter.com/Kc686gRkGF

— Emory Jones (@eXjones6) May 11, 2016

Yesterday [May 11] the Buckeyes offered another QB spot to Emory Jones out of Franklin, Georgia. Jones is one of the top dual threat quarterbacks in the nation for 2018, and he’s the fourth quarterback the Buckeyes have offered in the class. Many thought Jones was a done deal to Tennessee, but the Buckeyes are his “dream school,” so the offer certainly changes his recruitment. The Buckeyes want to get him on campus as soon as possible with the hope that a visit will secure a commitment. Jones told 11W he wanted to make a decision by the end of the summer, and it will still likely come down to Tennessee and Ohio State. I personally like what Phil Jurkovec brings to the table, and I’d prefer to have him in the class over Jones, but that’s just me.

Derrik Allen – CB – Class of 2018

Beyond blessed to receive an offer from Ohio State University! #GoBucks @OhioStateFB @LHS_Recruiting pic.twitter.com/WgVlxMEVoH

— Derrik Allen (@DsmoothAllen) May 11, 2016

Derrik Allen of Marietta, Georgia also received an offer yesterday. He’s the 2nd-ranked cornerback in the early 2018 rankings and already holds 23 offers from most of the top schools in the nation. Right now he is crystal-balled to Georgia, but with only two predictions right now, his decision is far from certain. Allen is listed at 6’1” and 185 and judging by his highlights, he plays the ball well while in the air, but he can also play down and make some big hits at the line.

KJ Henry – DE – Class of 2018

A couple of days ago, the Buckeyes offered KJ Henry, a weak-side defensive end out of Clemmons, North Carolina. He’s the 2nd-ranked WDE in the nation in the early 2018 rankings and currently holds 22 offers from pretty much the entire ACC conference, as well as Florida, Tennessee and Florida State. Henry currently has a crystal ball prediction to both North Carolina and Clemson, but Clemson seems to be the leading the chase for now.

Josh Belk – DT – Class of 2018

#OhioState offers four-star defensive tackle Josh Belk. https://t.co/DOfI3eBIFp@jbelk50 @wmitchell473 @Bill_Kurelic @alexgleitman

— Ryan Bartow (@RyanBartow) May 10, 2016

The Buckeyes are on a roll with 2018 offers, and Josh Belk, the #5 DT prospect in the 2018 rankings, was on the receiving end of one of them. Belk hails from Richburg, South Carolina, and his home state Gamecocks look to be the favorite to land him; however, he also holds offers from traditional powers like Clemson, Florida State and LSU. He has three crystal ball predictions in for the Gamecocks, so pulling him out of South Carolina may be a challenge for the Buckeye coaches.

One of Georgia's top 2018 QB prospect gets an offer from the Buckeyes.

On Tuesday, Ohio State dropped off two offers to 2018 prospects in DT Josh Belk and DE KJ Henry. On Wednesday, it was the same story for two other soon-to-be top football recruits. Not to be forgotten, a new offer was also sent out to an in-state 2017 basketball prospect by Head Coach Thad Matta as well.

Jones' dream comes true

There seems to be no greater feeling than when your dreams finally become a reality. Last night, class of 2018 QB Emory Jones (Franklin, Ga. / Heard County) was able to experience that very feeling when Ohio State dropped an offer to him.

Blessed & honored to say I just received my dream offer from the Ohio State University ❗❗⭕#GoBuckeyes #14 pic.twitter.com/Kc686gRkGF

— Emory Jones (@eXjones6) May 11, 2016

Jones is a 6 foot 1 inch, 193-pounder and currently sits at No. 2 overall in the 247Sports Composite Dual-Threat QB rankings just below Phil Jurkovec and right above Joey Gatewood (Auburn commit), who both have Buckeye offers under their belts as well.

Despite the fact that Jones is just a junior. The Peach State native has acquired offers from over ten schools already. Programs like Clemson, Florida, Georgia, Tennessee, Miami (FL), Mississippi State, South Carolina and West Virginia are just some of the power programs that are vying for Jones' services.

In the end, we'll have to see if the dream pull is enough to help bring the talented Peach State prospect to Columbus when it's time to put pen to paper.

With that being said, Jones wasn't the only Georgia prospect to be on the receiving end of an Ohio State offer on Wednesday. Class of 2018 CB Derrik Allen (Marietta, Ga. / Lassiter) picked up a nice birthday gift as he also got an offer from the Scarlet and Gray on his special day.

Beyond blessed to receive an offer from Ohio State University! #GoBucks @OhioStateFB @LHS_Recruiting pic.twitter.com/WgVlxMEVoH

— Derrik Allen (@DsmoothAllen) May 11, 2016

The 6 foot 1 inch, 185-pounder is currently graded as a five-star prospect and the No. 2 cornerback in the class. For now, Allen is mostly pegged to stay in-state and suit up for Kirby Smart and the Bulldogs in Athens, Ga, according to 247Sports Crystal Ball Predictions. The good news for the Buckeyes is that there is more than enough time to make some noise in this recruitment.

Bucks offer Young

Switching gears to the basketball Buckeyes, there was a new development in the 2017 recruiting class. According to Corey Albertson of TripleDoubleProspects.com, Ohio State hosted 2017 SF Kyle Young (Massillon, Ohio / Jackson) on an unofficial visit yesterday and the outcome resulted in an offer from the Buckeyes for the 6 foot 6 inch, 205-pounder.

Young will have to sort through his 12 offers to ultimately decide where he wants to spend his college career. Ohio State joined schools like Clemson, Illinois, Northwestern, Purdue, Wisconsin, Xavier and a handful of others to offer the local prospect.

Young is currently graded as a three-star prospect in the 2017 recruiting cycle. He also stands at 148th in the entire country, 32nd at the Small Forward position, and third in the state of Ohio. If there is one thing that concerns Ohio State basketball fans, it's likely the in-state misses as of late, and reeling in Young could help ease those concerns just a little.

The Buckeyes used the longball to outslug the 16th-ranked Owls in Columbus.

Ohio State baseball put a beatdown on a nationally-ranked team on Wednesday in Columbus, using three home runs to pick up a 10-2 win over No. 16 Florida Atlantic.

Seniors Nick Sergakis and Troy Kuhn and redshirt junior Jacob Bosiokovic all had homers in this one, helping power an offensive attack that reached double digit scoring for the 10th time this season.

With Tuesday's game being cancelled due to weather, both teams had a full complement of pitchers and didn't hesitate to use them. All total, 12 players took to the bump in this one.

Senior Daulton Mosbarger started the game for Ohio State, and gave up two runs in four innings of work, allowing four hits and a walk while striking out five. Mosbarger was relieved by redshirt sophomore Kyle Michalik and didn't factor in the decision.

Michalik picked up his second win after throwing two scoreless innings. He was followed by sophomore Seth Kinker, senior Michael Horejsei, and redshirt sophomore Yianni Pavlopoulos, who combined to toss five shutout innings.

Mark Nowatnick took the ball to start for the Owls and didn't survive the third inning, allowing four runs on four hits in taking the loss.

The first big knock of the game in the bottom of the third courtesy of Sergakis. After Tre Gantt doubled, Jalen Washington was hit by a pitch, and L. Grant Davis walked, the Buckeyes' senior co-captain strode to the plate with the bases loaded and nobody out. On a 2-1 pitch, he took Nowatnick deep over the 370-foot sign in left-center for a grand slam, his eighth home run of the year.

Troy Montgomery bunted his way aboard to continue the inning, stole second, and crossed the plate with the seventh run of the inning on a single up the middle by Gantt.

FAU responded in the top of the fourth, scoring a pair of runs off Mosbarger. A walk and a double put runners in scoring position for Christian Dicks, who delivered a two-run single to trim the lead to 7-2.

Ohio State added a run in the bottom of the sixth when Washington was hit by a pitch for the second time, this one courtesy of Colyn O'Connell, and eventually came around to score on a bunt single by Nennig.

After Kuhn was hit by a pitch by Owls' reliever Robbie Coursel, Bosiokovic then got into the act in the seventh, driving one the other way over the right field fence for a two-run home run and a 10-2 advantage. It was the his team-leading 11th homer of the season.

The bullpen arms of the Buckeyes were rock solid, yielding just three hits as a unit to hand FAU the loss.

Ohio State has its final weekend home series coming up beginning Friday against Michigan. The Big Ten series will have major implications on the Buckeyes' conference tournament hopes. Friday's lid lifter is scheduled to get started at 6:35 p.m. ET and will be streamed live on BTN Plus.

LGHL Sean Payton turned to Urban Meyer to discuss Ohio State draftees

The Saints coach picked a pair of Buckeyes, but inquired with Urban Meyer first.

"Sean Payton turned to an old friend with some pretty good insight on [Vonn Bell and Michael Thomas] -- Ohio State coach Urban Meyer."

- Mike Triplett, ESPN.com

Triplett goes into great detail here about how despite not ever being on the same coaching staff, Urban Meyer and New Orleans Saints head coach Sean Payton have developed a good relationship over the years. Both of them had their starts at smaller schools, with both working their way up to their respective jobs now, while keeping in contact. The two met while recruiting in similar areas, and have always stayed in touch. The two being friends is somewhat unexpected, but seems totally right, as they're both considered top coaches in their respective arenas.

So naturally, when looking into Vonn Bell and Michael Thomas, Payton had no better person to go to for an evaluation than Urban Meyer. Meyer told Payton that Michael Thomas was immature when he first got to Ohio State, but added that he was a good person. Meyer added that Thomas thought he was better than what he was, and thought he worked harder than he actually did. Of course, Meyer helped Thomas turn things around, and credited him for it. His evaluation of Bell was that he's got a corner skill set, and that he had a similar beginning at Ohio State that Thomas did, but he helped him turn things around as well. Meyer said both players were first-round talents, and it's admirable to see how Meyer is able to get the most out of his players, and it explains why the Buckeyes had such a great 2016 NFL Draft.

"Corey Smith was summoned to coach Urban Meyer's office last week. In the past, such a call would have been akin to a trip to the principal's office. This time was different."

- Bill Rabinowitz, The Columbus Dispatch

Corey Smith, like a lot of his Buckeye teammates came to Ohio State, and became a better player and a person by the time they finished up. Smith still has this season to play, but his turnaround has been extremely impressive. Rabinowitz describes Smith being called into Urban Meyer's office, but this time it was for a good reason, outside of his early troubles. Smith graduated with a degree in African American and African Studies on Sunday. He was one of nine players who earned their diplomas.

Rabinowitz says that Smith had a tough childhood in Akron, and attended two junior colleges before he came to Columbus. He wasn't big on his studies, and told Rabinowitz, ""I just feel like certain people are made to go to school and some people, that's not the path they go on." But Smith not only turned his books around, but his efforts on the field as well, after nearly quitting back in 2014 during the week of the Michigan State game. Wide receivers coach Zach Smith talked him out of it, though. He's also strongly motivated by his five kids, which has been a big part of his turnaround. Much like his teammates, he credited Urban Meyer for helping him turn from a boy into a man. It's great to hear stories like Smith's, who appears to be heading in the right direction.

"I know I had said it before, playing on the opposite side of the Ohio State-Michigan rivalry, I know how passionate people are up here about football, about their sports."

- Taylor Decker, via Dave Birkett, Detroit Free Press

The Detroit Lions shared their history with their rookies, a substitute for the rookie symposium which the NFL is no longer holding. The team shared its Ohio roots, as well as their Thanksgiving tradition. Taylor Decker pointed out to Birkett that the team shared only the positives of their history, and understandably so since it's not exactly one of the franchises that has seen its fair share of success really ever.

Decker told Birkett that outside of a single team meeting with veterans, the rookies have had most of the time to themselves to get to know each other and to catch up to the rest of the team. Decker noted the biggest things were learning the offense, as well as holding their own in the weight room. The one thing that threw Decker off (unsurprisingly) was the depth of the playbook, and how it was much greater than what it was in college. But surely Decker will be able to hold his own, and it should be fun watching him on Sundays, trying to help turn the Lions around.

Michael Thomas, Vonn Bell, Adolphus Washington, Braxton Miller and Nick Vannett all earned their Day 2 selections in the NFL draft, but how does their future look now?

Welcome to part two of our analysis on Ohio State's 2016 NFL draftees. If you missed part one, no one freak out, you can read it right here.

No. 47 - WR Michael Thomas to the New Orleans Saints

Michael Thomas had an interesting lead-up to the draft, with some calling @cantguardmike the number one overall wide receiver, and others pointing to Thomas' lack of elite collegiate production as a sign that he wasn't worth a high selection. In the end, the middle of the second round seems about right for Thomas and his NFL ready 6'3, 212 lb frame. With the departure of long-time Saints' wide receiver Marques Colston, Thomas has the chance to step in as Drew Brees immediate go-to red zone threat. With time to learn the playbook and sharpen his route running, look for Thomas to emerge as the Saints number one receiver, as incumbent starters Brandin Cooks and Willie Snead may have speed and ability in the slot, but they just don't possess the same total package as Thomas.

Other Mike Thomas news:

  • In one of my favorite Players' Tribune articles to date, Thomas discusses his upbringing and how his switch from basketball to football has helped make him into the player he is today. Also, Thomas took the liberty of showing off a few of his better career highlights, because #shhhhhh.
  • Poor Kendall Fuller. The Saints' official twitter took an opportunity to show off the play which started a movement:

Those Mike Thomas footsteps though... @Cantguardmike HIGHLIGHTS: https://t.co/lkT15Sukmc #SaintsDraft pic.twitter.com/2hh4TiOMar

— New Orleans Saints (@Saints) April 30, 2016

From New Orleans Saints Head Coach Sean Payton:

"He's big, competitive, I love his hands in traffic and I think he has a very unique skillset. He has real strong hands and has some good runs after the catch. You watch him workout and you watch him compete and you see game film after game film and at times it's hard based on what they (Ohio State) do offensively, but I love his size and competitive nature and his makeup is outstanding."

No. 61 - SAF Vonn Bell to the New Orleans Saints

Vonn Bell joins Thomas in New Orleans, and like Thomas, it appears as though this will be a productive fit for all parties involved. Bell doesn't have a starting spot open for him with Kenny Vacarro and Jairus Byrd currently patrolling the Saints' secondary, but with ever-evolving NFL pass offenses, you can never have too many defensive backs on a roster at one time. Look for Bell to find plenty of time as the de facto third safety, in addition to snaps gained as the Saint's potential nickel corner.

Other Bell news:

  • Vonn was apparently alerted that he was going to be drafted before most players. No, the Saints didn't call Bell before the draft or anything, but the fortune cookie Bell got left few questions to be asked.
  • Vonn was so happy he got drafted that even a random Papa Johns deliver guy got a twitter shout out. I'm fairly certain there were additional attendees at Vonn's draft party:

Thank you to @PapaJohns for delivering pizza to my draft party! Appreciate the support! pic.twitter.com/6kF6A3Ey56

— Vonn Bell (@TheVonnBell7) April 30, 2016

From New Orleans Saints Head Coach Sean Payton:

"(Discussing the fact that Bell had to send Payton additional videos demonstrating various combine drills) That was important to me...I told him after we drafted him, I said 'Had you not sent me back those videos, you'd still be sitting home eating nachos right now."

No. 80 - DT Adolphus Washington to the Buffalo Bills

Adolphus Washington joins quarterback Cardale Jones in Buffalo, and while the fit may seem troubling for Washington at first glance, the real prize for Washington is his coach and teammates more so than the depth chart. The issue for Washington comes down to the fact that Marcell Dareus and Kyle Williams are firmly entrenched as the Bills starting defensive tackles. Every defense rotates its defensive lineman, and good depth is always a must have on either side of the line of scrimmage, but it still must be a bit disappointing for Washington to seemingly be entrenched as a backup for the foreseeable future. However, Washington did have experience playing defensive end at Ohio State, and his pass rushing skills will find him playing time from day one. The only question is its the kind of playing time the former first team All-American expects, but look for defensive wizard and Bills head coach Rex Ryan to find plenty of use for his new toy.

Other Washington news:

  • While Washington's solicitation arrest did seem to lead to a bit of a draft day fall, for Washington to get picked in the 3rd round should still be viewed as a win for Washington in a draft class with so many solid defensive linemen.
  • Washington managed to get 'the homie' 50 Cent to his draft party, which leads to the inevitable 2017 NFL draft combine interview question: would you rather party with a Papa Johns delivery guy or 50 Cent?:

S/O the homie @50cent showed me mad love at my draft party. Appreciate it big homie.

From Buffalo Bills General Manager Doug Whaley:

"(Washington) will compete for a starting spot, (Washington has some pass-rush moves) which is rare for an inside player."

No. 80 - WR Braxton Miller to the Houston Texans

Braxton Miller finds a great home in Houston, where he will get to learn from one of the game's best wide receivers in Deandre Hopkins. However, fans shouldn't have to wait long to see Miller's transformation to a NFL wide receiver first hand, as Miller projects to find a spot as a top four receiver in the Texans' offense as early as this year. Receiving should hopefully be just the tip of the iceberg for Miller in Houston, as possibilities to get the electric playmaker the ball range from punt returning, wild cat quarterback packages, and even some snaps at running back in the Texans' zone heavy offense.

Other Braxton news:

  • The before mentioned Hopkins couldn't be happier with the drafting of Miller and former Notre Dame wide receiver Will Fuller.
  • Miller reunites with ex-Penn State head coach Bill O'Brien. This time I'm sure O'Brien was actually happy to see Miller, unlike the last time the two crossed paths:

From Houston Texans Head Coach Bill O'Brien:

"I think we're going to play him in a few different places, but definitely the slot is one of them. There are a lot of different things that he can do for us in the slot, we think he can do things for us on the outside, there's things that he can do for us at the number three spot, special teams, he can help us in that area too. Like I said, very excited to get going with him."

No. 94 - TE Nick Vannett to the Seattle Seahawks

Nick Vannett, maybe the biggest "loser" of the Ohio State offense last year in terms of touches, showed enough ability on film to warrant being the third tight end off the board. The fit in Seattle couldn't be better for the early years of Vannett's NFL career. While starter Jimmy Graham will obviously receive the majority of the targets in the Seahawks offense, Graham is currently recovering from a partellar tendon injury which could result in Vannett receiving more opportunities to catch the ball sooner rather than later. Vannett will have to beat out Luke Wlilson for the number two tight end spot, but seeing as Wilson's contract expires at the end of this season, look for Vannett to potentially seize control as the starting Seahawks tight end within a few years.

Other Vannett news:

  • Vannett may have been selected even higher if his production matched his ability, something that Vannett highlighted himself after the draft.
  • Get used to this Seahawks fans:

From Seattle Seahawks Head Coach Pete Carroll:

"We were really surprised that we had the shot at him. We're fired up that we got the best blocking tight end in the draft this year, without question...The other tight ends may want to argue about that but we know what we saw, so we're excited about that."

Ohio State looks like it added its goalie of the future in Sean Romeo, while adding another defenseman, Wyatt Ege.

Ohio State announced that they have added seven new players to the roster for the 2016-17 fall season, including two transfers who will be ineligible for the upcoming campaign as per NCAA transfer eligibility rules.

The headlines here are Wyatt Ege, a defenseman transfer from Alaska-Anchorage, and Sean Romeo, a goalie transfer from the University of Maine. Ege looks like a big get for the Buckeyes when he becomes eligible in 2017-18, as he put up four goals and nine assists and made the WCHA All-Rookie Team as a freshman last year.

Romeo looks to be the Buckeyes' goalie of the future as mainstays Matt Tomkins and Christian Frey head into their senior years in 2016-17. Both have been the entire goalie rotation for the last two-plus years and look to keep it that way until they graduate. However, once they're gone, there wasn't an immediate heir apparent on the roster. That now looks to be Romeo, who started 21 games as a freshman for Maine, posting a 3.04 goals against average and .902 save percentage. Neither is that great, but he certainly could improve over his freshman numbers in the softer Big Ten, coming from Hockey East.

In addition to those transfers, the Buckeyes also announced five more commitments who signed their letters of intent for the upcoming season.

Matt Miller, a defenseman from Youngstown of the USHL, comes in having put up seven goals and six assists last season. Gordi Myer, another defenseman, put up three goals and 15 assists for Green Bay of the USHL last year.

OSU added three forwards as well. Ronnie Hein, from Waterloo of the USHL, had 14 goals and 35 assists in 57 games last year, and looks to be a candidate to contribute early for the Buckeyes. Tanner Laczynski, from Chicago of the USHL, finished fourth in the USHL in scoring last season with 24 goals and 39 assists. He too, looks to provide an immediate impact for the Buckeyes. Lastly, there's the 5'10, 160-pound Sam McCormick out of Waterloo. He put up 57 points last season for Waterloo and Madison combined. He may need to fill out before contributing to OSU.
