BTN Mailbag: Jim Harbaugh, MSU’s ‘chip on the shoulder’ & more

Mailbag: Jim Harbaugh, MSU’s ‘chip on the shoulder’ & more
Tom Dienhart, BTN.com Senior Writer via Big Ten Network

Is Michigan’s Jim Harbaugh getting too much attention? Who will win the Big Ten East? And what’s up with that perceived chip on the shoulder at Michigan State? I get into all of that—and more–in this super terrific mail bag. Why do you continue to be a publicist for Jim Harbaugh? Is he paying you to keep his name alive in your columns? The last time I looked, there were 13 other coaches in this league. Do they do nothing? – David Walimaki OK. I have received several emails along these lines. Near the end of last season, we took at look at all of the Big Ten standings to figure out just how bad Rutgers had been in their first year of conference play. The data showed that actually, Rutgers was bad at nearly everything, not just football and men’s basketball.

Rutgers fans criticized me for this, saying I cherry-picked data, or that I was missing the point. But now, the 2015-2016 seasons are all in the books, and we have an entire new year of data to look at. Did Rutgers improve? How did Ohio State do? Who was the best overall athletic department in the Big Ten?

The Lincoln Journal-Star crunched all of the data in one neat little chart. Here's what it tells us:

575caba956ec7.pdf.jpg
Lincoln Journal-Star
Top to bottom, Michigan’s athletic department was best in the Big Ten

The Wolverines had the highest average Big Ten ranking across all sports, with an average ranking of 3.75. They finished in the top half of every sport but four (eighth in men’s basketball, ninth in volleyball, last in men’s and women’s lacrosse), and won the regular season or Big Ten tournament championship in an impressive seven sports.

Right behind them was Ohio State, who actually won the most Big Ten championships

The Buckeyes actually won more Big Ten regular season or Tournament championships than anybody else in the conference (eight), but finished just behind Michigan’s overall ranking, with an average sport finish in 4.14 in the conference. Ohio State also finished in the top half of the Big Ten in every sport but five (ninth in Men’s Cross Country, eighth in Men’s Golf, fourth in Hockey, fourth in mens and women’s lacrosse). The Buckeyes found success in highly visible sports like football, baseball and men's soccer, but also dominated the conference in tennis (men’s and women's), women’s golf, and more.

Rutgers is still terrible at almost everything

To be fair, Rutgers did have some bright spots this season. Rutgers women's soccer finished third in the conference, but then made the Final Four before losing to eventual champion Penn State in the semi-finals. The Scarlet Knights also finished third in men’s soccer, making the NCAA Tournament, and finished fifth in a very competitive wrestling conference. They also finished second in Men’s lacrosse, nearly making the NCAA tournament, and knocking off some of the biggest names in the sport. So that’s all good!

The bad news is that they were throughly uncompetitive in virtually everything else. Rutgers finished with an average Big Ten ranking of 9.17, easily the worst in the conference, far behind second-worst Illinois at 7.62. Rutgers finished last in the Big Ten in six sports, including a historically terrible finish in men’s basketball that may have cost multiple teams a seed line. In fact, Rutgers finished dead last more often than they finished in the top half of the standings. They finished last or second to last in eight sports. It was truly a woeful performance.

Rutgers fans will surely point out on Twitter, or in the comments section, that they couldn’t be expected to compete at a Big Ten level across all sports so quickly given the years of neglect by the athletic department (this is true). They’ll mention that they just hired a new athletic director, and new coaches in multiple sports (this is true). They’ll mention they’re not getting a full Big Ten revenue share yet (this is true), and that once that funding comes, they’ll be able to make the infrastructure changes needed to become more competitive in the near future (this is maybe true).

But the point still stands, that even after a second year of competition, the gap between Rutgers and even the lower tier programs in the conference is significant, and Rutgers isn't real Big Ten quality in well, most things right now. Maybe that changes in the future, maybe not. But hey, even if Rutgers continues to suck, those checks still cash.

Maryland is good at sports that the conference doesn’t care about, less good at the ones it does

If we just look at average performance across all sports, fellow Big Ten newcomer Maryland looks much better than Rutgers. The Terps clock in 10th, with an average finish of 7.45. That isn't great, but Maryland can claim four Big Ten regular season or tournament championships, something many teams with higher average ratings don’t have. That’s pretty good!

What sports is Maryland dominating? The Terps have titles in women’s basketball, men's lacrosse, women's lacrosse, and field hockey, to pair with strong finishes in men’s basketball, men’s soccer and men’s golf.

The trouble is, only five Big Ten programs sponsor men's lacrosse (sorry, Johns Hopkins, you don’t really count for these purposes), and only six sponsor women’s lacrosse. Nine sponsor field hockey, which still makes it one of the less adopted programs in the conference.

The Journal-Star also recalculated the rankings based on just the sports that Nebraska sponsors (so removing rankings for men’s soccer, men’s swimming, men’s and women's lacrosse, rowing, hockey and field hockey). Is that arbitrary? A little bit, but it does give a baseline number for how a program is competing in sports that have higher conference participation rates. Under that benchmark, Maryland is second to last in the Big Ten, with an 8.94 ranking. Only Rutgers is worse, at 10.21.

Does this matter?

I’m going to go out on a limb, and suggest that fans might be willing to forgive struggles in volleyball or softball in exchange for competence in football or basketball. Both Maryland and Rutgers have new coaches, but in the rugged Big Ten East, even a jump to competence could be a few years away.

But if or two teams are perpetually bottom feeders, that hurts the postseason prospects for everybody, especially in a sport like baseball, where the conference schedule can be particularly unbalanced.

The data shows that Ohio State and Michigan, with their well-run athletic departments, strong hires and near limitless resources, are in a position to be competitive in virtually every sport.

The newcomers? They’re not there yet. And it may be a while before they ever get there.

The Browns are heading back to Columbus for preseason work

For the second year in a row, Ohio Stadium will host the Cleveland Browns for their annual “Orange & Brown scrimmage”. Free to the public, registration opens for season ticket members Tuesday, June 21 and will open to all fans Thursday, June 23rd.

The scrimmage will kick off on Saturday, Aug. 6 and the game will run from 3:00-5:30 p.m., but will feature a full day of events. The Browns will bring ‘Dawg Pound Drive’ back to St. John Arena for pregame fun starting at noon.

Last year’s event drew nearly 50,000 fans to The ‘Shoe for an afternoon of NFL football — the biggest crowd in Browns’ recorded history for a team scrimmage or family day event.

Former quarterback Terrelle Pryor is the only Buckeye currently on roster for Cleveland, and the return to Ohio Stadium will be only his second — his first being last year’s scrimmage -- since his departure during the aftermath of the tattoo-for-bartering scandal of 2011.

It’s the final week of the season. And, even better, it’s rivalry week! Division titles may be on the line, in addition to cool trophies. Front and center on this Saturday: “The Game,” between Ohio State and Michigan. Could the Big Ten East crown be on the line? The Buckeyes have dominated this series of late, going 12-2 since 2001 and winning the last four meetings with a 42-13 triumph last season. The last time Michigan won in Columbus? In 2000, when the Wolverines took a 38-26 decision. This is the best of Week 13. Best game: The Buckeyes need

The heart of SEC country holds a potential Buckeye recruit

5-star Grimes will close recruiting process down soon

Some of the biggest news of Tuesday came when five-star wide receiver prospect Trevon Grimes (Fort Lauderdale, FL / St. Thomas Aquinas) made it apparent that he will be shutting down his recruiting process and commit to a school on August 24.

August 24th #Gators #Hurricanes #RollTide #Buckeyes #Bulldogs #Noles ❗❗

— GrimeTime™ (@TrevonGrimes7) June 14, 2016

Grimes, regarded as the top WR in the 2017 class and one of the top overall players in the country, has the Buckeyes as one of the favorites surrounded by a host of schools represented from the ACC and SEC. It’s been obvious for some time that Ohio State is at the top of Grimes' list and should everything go as planned, Grimes will be a Buckeye when late August rolls around. According to the 247Sports predictions, the recruiting experts believe that Grimes will make the trip out of SEC country and head to Columbus, Ohio.

A potential commitment from 6-foot-3, 202-pound Sunshine State sensation would further strengthen the class that Ohio State is putting together in 2017 – one that will probably be solidified as the No.1 class if Grimes becomes a Buckeye. As it stands, Grimes is considered the seventh best player and fourth best receiver out of Florida.

It’s no wonder that recent 2017 Buckeye commit Tate Martell (Las Vegas, NV / Bishop Gorman) was lobbying for Grimes to come with him to Ohio State.

Y'all wanna see a scary sight...

Another top ranked QB has thoughts on Ohio State

Very notable news came on the Emory Jones (Franklin, GA /Heard County) front as Jones was in Columbus on Tuesday at a camp, throwing for the Ohio State coaching staff.

2018 QB target Emory Jones: "Ohio State is probably my leader right now." Said decision to come later this month.

— Tim Shoemaker (@TimShoemaker) June 14, 2016

Jones, a class of 2018 standout, is one of the top quarterback prospects in his class and is likely a top 20 player in the country. Jones has held Ohio State in high regard for most of his process and it could even be thought that the Buckeyes have led the whole way.

For the Buckeyes, this would be another huge get. Jones currently is slated by 247Sports as the No.2 dual threat QB in the class of 2018.

The Ohio State coaching staff has done a great job in this recruitment, pushing the Buckeyes brand and vaulting to the top of his list. The recent Martell commitment is not thought to impact Jones' recruitment. Just look at what Martell put on Twitter late Tuesday night:

Gotta get my man, @eXjones6 to join the QB Squad at OSU!

— Tate Martell (@TheTateMartell) June 15, 2016

Martell is being the unofficial hype man for the Buckeyes – which is a good thing. The potential stacked depth at QB entering the 2018 season would be insane, assuming Jones commits to Ohio State.

If Ohio State were to pick up a commitment from Jones, it's not crazy to think that he would be the most talented QB on the roster when he steps foot on campus.

Just look at Jones’ highlight tape:

LGHL Mike Weber says the Ohio State-Michigan rivalry isn’t anything personal

Mike Weber says the Ohio State-Michigan rivalry isn’t anything personal
Ian Cuevas
via our friends at Land-Grant Holy Land

usa-today-8970463.0.jpg

The former Michigan commit and current Buckeye running back says the rivalry stops of the field.

"We don't talk about it at all. We know each other way before it and will know each other way after. The rivalry is big, of course, and we don't block it. But when it comes to being around each other, it's playing video games, laughing, talking about other things."

- Mike Weber via Mark Snyder, Detroit Free Press

Ohio State running back Mike Weber has some high expectations this season, with Ezekiel Elliott heading to the NFL and only Bri'onte Dunn fighting him for carries on a team that will likely run the ball more than its fair share under coach Urban Meyer. Weber, a former Michigan commit, recently spoke about the rivalry and being one of the few players in the two teams' history to decommit and switch to its arch-rival school. Weber insists that the rivalry will be kept on the football field alone, as Weber has friends of his own playing for the Wolverines. Recruited out of Cass Tech in Michigan, Weber still has plenty of ties to Michigan and will likely be a storyline throughout his career playing for Ohio State.

After a season that including sitting behind a Heisman Trophy contender and a torn meniscus, Weber is looking to have a breakout year of his own. Though it hasn't been officially decided who will start at running back quite yet, Weber has made a strong case in spring to get the bulk of the carries. Either way, expect to see plenty of the sophomore running back and if he wants to make his mark, there's no better time to do it than during the next edition of The Game between the Buckeyes and Wolverines.

"Ohio State might return an FBS-low six starters, including three on offense and three on defense. However, one of those returners is quarterback J.T. Barrett."

- Bryan Ives, ESPN

ESPN went through the top 25 teams in college football this season and chose each team's best "number" to brag about. For Ohio State, it was quarterback J.T. Barrett's statistics as a starter. As the numbers show, Barrett is more effective as a starter (splitting time with Cardale Jones last season) with a touchdown-to-interception ratio of 3.4 and 12 percent of his pass attempts gaining 20-plus yards. When you throw in the fact that Barrett has a 15-2 record as a starter (Virginia Tech and Michigan State were his only losses as a starter), it has to be comforting for the coaching staff to have a leader of Barrett's caliber under center.

Last season, Barrett threw for just under 1,000 yards (and was only 200 yards or so from 3,000 yards in 2014) with 11 touchdowns. Barrett also added 682 rushing yards and another 11 touchdowns on the ground. His freshman season was tremendous as he helped lead the Buckeyes to the Big Ten championship game before suffering an injury against Michigan and Jones took over to lead Ohio State to a national championship. Now Barrett is set as the lone starter, fully healthy, and has young talent at his disposal at wide receiver.

"Big Ten Ultimate Road Trip Week 7 - Unanimous pick: Ohio State at Wisconsin"

- Josh Moyer, ESPN

The Big Ten ESPN crew continues their series of the Big Ten Ultimate Road Trip, in which they pick the most intriguing matchup, the best atmosphere, or notable players for a game during the Big Ten season. For week seven, the crew chose Ohio State at Wisconsin on Oct. 15. The Buckeyes will be making the road trip to Madison and Camp Randall to take on the Badgers. The last time these two teams met, Ohio State steamrolled Wisconsin in the Big Ten championship game 59-0. But it seems like most of the time the two teams clash, it ends up becoming a tightly contested game. There are plenty of classic examples, including a Hail Mary touchdown throw from Braxton Miller in 2011, the Badgers notching an upset win over a No. 1 ranked Ohio State team, and the list goes on.

This is a good choice by the crew over at ESPN for several reasons. The atmosphere surrounding the game should no doubt be excellent, as Wisconsin fans know all about how to jump around their stadium. It's certainly one of my favorite college football traditions and is a blast for fans and players alike. Of course, it helps that the game will likely come later in the evening, which always adds to the intensity.

dawson.0.0.jpg

The season is over and the draft has come and gone. What are the Buckeyes losing after a championship season?

For head coach Greg Beals, his sixth season at the helm of the Ohio State baseball program was one to remember. 44 wins, a Big Ten tournament championship, and a place among the 64 teams in the NCAA tournament. Though the Buckeyes were eliminated from the Louisville regional by Wright State, their season was a step forward for the program.

"The season doesn't end the way anyone wants it to except for the national champion, and that's certainly the case for us today," Beals said to Press Pros Magazine after the season's final defeat. "I'm extremely proud of this group of Buckeyes, not only for what they did on the field, but for who they became as a team."

The members of that team now head off in different directions; some to summer league play, others to summer school, and a few to begin their professional careers. The Ohio State squad that will return to Bill Davis Stadium in a few months for fall ball will be very different from the one that walked off the field, axe in hand, in Louisville. Whether the program can take another step forward or regresses two steps backwards will be the looming question.

What the Buckeyes lose from the everyday lineup

In just a couple of words, the Buckeyes will be losing a lot. Nine seniors will be departing the program, along with the potential for as many as four underclassmen who were selected in the Major League Baseball draft. That's nearly 43 percent of the roster, and an incredible chunk of the 2016 team's production.

Among position players, senior co-captain and first-team All-Big Ten performer Nick Sergakis, who was drafted by the New York Mets in the 23rd round, headlines the departures. Sergakis was in the top ten in the conference in slugging, on-base percentage, runs scored, hits, RBIs, doubles, home runs, walks, hit by pitch, and total bases in 2016, and provided solid third base defense and unquantifiable leadership to the team.

The rest of the starting infield and the top two reserves are also departing. Craig Nennig, the three-year starter at shortstop, and Troy Kuhn, who started at third base, second base, and first base in his four years, have both exhausted their eligibility. Jacob Bosiokovic, who spent the second half of the season manning first base after starting the year in right field, was drafted in the 19th round by the Colorado Rockies.

Behind that trio and Sergakis, L. Grant Davis and Ryan Leffel, both seniors, were the only other players to see time on the infield. Fellow senior Zach Ratcliff ended up redshirting despite appearing in 16 games at the beginning of the season.

The losses are just as deep in the outfield, as third-team All-American left fielder Ronnie Dawson was selected in the second round by the Houston Astros, center fielder Troy Montgomery went in the eighth round to the Los Angeles Angels, and reserves Daulton Mosbarger and Jake Brobst exhausted their eligibility.

Dawson was arguably the most dangerous man in the lineup for all three of his seasons in scarlet and gray, and capped it off with a 2016 that saw him slash .331/.419/.611 while leading the team with 85 hits, 55 runs scored, 25 doubles, 13 home runs, 51 runs batted in, and 21 stolen bases. The Grove City, Ohio native has already inked his first professional contract with the Astros.

Montgomery, who started the year off slowly but finished on a tear, had a slash line of .297/.423/.466, to go along with 14 doubles, eight home runs, 34 runs batted in, and owning fourth place in program history with 60 career stolen bases.

In all, the offense is losing 80 percent of its hits, 80 percent of its doubles, 86 percent of its home runs, 83 percent of its total extra-base hits, and 77 percent of its runs batted in. That is a crater-sized hole that Beals will have to fill in 2017.

What the Buckeyes lose from the pitching staff

On the mound, the losses are also great, though less so than with the everyday lineup. Friday night starter Tanner Tully, the former Big Ten Freshman of the Year and a first-team All-Big Ten selection as a junior, is the largest loss after being drafted in the 26th round by the Cleveland Indians.

The Elkhart, Indiana native has anchored the weekend rotation for most of his three seasons in Columbus, amassing a career record of 18-10 with a 2.93 earned run average in 46 appearances that included 40 starts. Conceivably, Tully could return for his senior season in an attempt to boost his draft stock, and has until July 15th to make a decision. But his leverage for negotiating his signing bonus would likely only diminish in doing so, thus it's a good bet that he will forego his final season of eligibility.

Also departing the weekend rotation will be senior John Havird, who went 6-4 with a 3.73 ERA in his 16 starts in 2016.

The one area where departures do not leave a sizable loss in production is in the bullpen, which is expected to return several underclassmen next season. The one big loss is senior lefty Michael Horejsei, a 21st round draft pick of the Chicago White Sox, who will be taking with him 34 appearances in which he held the opposition to just a .156 batting average, sported a 0.84 WHIP, and had a 4.33-to-1 strikeout-to-walk ratio.

The total production the Buckeyes will be replacing includes 57 percent of its starts, 45 percent of its innings, and 42 percent of its strikeouts.

Pride and uncertainty

The players moving on from the program have much to be proud of. This senior class is the first full recruiting class Beals put together after taking over the program, and it helped propel the team to successes not seen in years. The Big Ten tournament title and NCAA regional appearance will be added in ink to the Ohio State baseball annals, both accomplishments to be proud of.

That said, the departures also leave the future of the program with innumerable questions, uncertainties, and doubts. After reaching such heights in 2016, can Beals, his staff, and his returning and incoming players continue to build momentum? Or will the Buckeyes once again find themselves back at square one?

OSU reeled in a big fish late this weekend. So where do they go from here?

It had been a quiet last few weeks on the Ohio State recruiting front, which is to be expected when space is at such a premium for the 2017 class. But the first domino in what could be many just fell, as the top dual-threat QB in the country, Tate Martell, committed to Ohio State, giving the Buckeyes 14 commitments for 2017.

Martell brings a shot of electricity to the Ohio State QB room, and helps establish even more depth there over the next few years. He also helps answer one of the big questions about this recruiting class, namely, who the lead QB commitment was going to be. But the big questions haven't stopped with Martell in the fold. Here are some of the other big questions to follow in June, and as we lead into National Signing Day. Just because the Buckeyes have the top ranked class at the moment, after all, doesn't mean this cycle won't lack drama and intrigue.

So what happens to Danny Clark now?

Martell's commitment is exciting, but the Buckeyes already had a QB commitment for the class of 2017. In fact, they’ve had one for ages. Four-star QB Danny Clark has been a Buckeye commit since his freshman year, and he's got the massive Block O tattoo to prove it.

Clark is a very different player from Martell. He’s more similar to a Joe Burrow or Dwayne Haskins, in that he’s more of a pocket passer than dual-threat prospect. The shine around his recruitment has also fallen off a bit over the last year or so, so he isn’t as highly regarded as other recruits (although he's still a four-star player).

Space is very tight in this recruiting class. So tight, that I've previously argued that maybe Ohio State doesn't actually need two quarterbacks. So do they keep Clark, as a hedge against a possible Burrow/Haskins/Martell transfer? Do they let him go, even though he’s been committed for years, and is still good enough to play at Ohio State? Is he offered a grayshirt? All signs indicate Clark legitimately wanting to play at Ohio State, but he’ll almost certainly have a clearer path to playing time elsewhere. We’ll see what happens.

How many wideouts does Ohio State grab, and which ones?

The Buckeyes are after many of the very best wideout prospects in the country, and figure to take more than one. But which ones, and how many, remains a bit of a question.

Perhaps the safest bet is from Tyjon Lindsey, the fifth best wideout prospect in the country, and a five-star. Lindsey plays prep football in California, but was a former teammate for Martell’s at Bishop Gorman in Las Vegas, and the two remain close. Ohio State was already at or near the top of his list, and with Martell in the fold, the Buckeyes are now heavy favorites for one of the fastest slot recruits in the country. Lindsey has said he’ll announce in late August, and anything can change in recruiting, but Ohio State feels good about their chances.

The other safe bet is with Trevon Grimes, the fourth ranked wideout in the country, and another five-star prospect. The 6’2 speedster from Buckeye pipeline St. Thomas Aquinas in Florida projects as more of an outside threat, and has had the Buckeyes near the top of his board for months. He’s likely to take another trip to Columbus soon, and when he does, a commitment could be imminent. These two are highly likely to pick Ohio State, but they might not be the only targets.

Ohio State is also in the thick of things for the top rated wideout, Donovan Peoples-Jones, out of Detroit. Basically every big name is in the hunt for this commitment, including Michigan, but Ohio State would move heaven and earth to take him, even if they’ve already accepted commitments from Grimes and Lindsey. Ohio State is more of an underdog in this race, but with Martell in the fold, the Buckeyes can’t be counted out. If they can take all three, they would.

But what if Ohio State misses on one of those three, or finds themselves with some extra room? Cleveland Heights wideout Jaylen Harris could be the beneficiary. The Buckeyes would seldom let a talent like Harris get away, but space could be so tight that it’s possible he’s on the outside looking in.

Do the Buckeyes take two wideouts? Three? It might all come down to room.

Does anybody leave the boat?

The Buckeyes currently have 14 commitments, and the majority of them appear likely to stick. The Buckeyes haven’t lost too many commitments from players they actively wanted to keep under Urban Meyer, although that does happen. But don’t expect everybody on this list to remain with Ohio State come National Signing Day.

Running back commit Todd Sibley, for example, has been asked to grayshirt. While it’s possible he takes Ohio State’s offer, it seems far more likely he’d accept a standard scholarship offer elsewhere, especially since he’s a four-star kid with lots of Power 5 interest. It seems probable he ends up elsewhere.

Kicker Blake Haubeil, could also be asked to grayshirt, like other recent Ohio State specialist commitments, to make room in a crowded class (Haubeil is still wildly expected to join Ohio State). Five-star defensive back Shaun Wade is being heavily recruited by Alabama and other southern powers, and maybe reporters think he’ll end up in the SEC by the time everything is done. Danny Clark, of course, could also end up elsewhere.

Everybody current committed is a very good player. But the Buckeyes are in the market for many more elite players, and how many they can take may depend on who decides to stick with this recruiting class.

Where is the roster attrition going to come from?

Ohio State has taken 25+ recruits over the last few recruiting classes, but don’t look for that to be the case this year, as they simply don’t have the roster room. In fact, Ohio State is essentially full now, but given that most still expect them to take between 18-21 recruits, some additional roster attrition is expected.

The question is, where, and what kind? There are a few medical cases that might come to light this offseason, and the Buckeyes have over-recruited at a few position groups (like offensive line, or wide receiver), and a player who realizes that playing time is now even more unlikely could decide to leave. Players could also get in trouble with the law or with team rules, and they might have an even shorter leash now.

We don’t know which players on the team will end up going elsewhere by next year, but it’s a safe bet that next year's roster will have many new faces. How many, and which ones, will dictate the rest of Ohio State’s recruiting priorities for this class.

These are good problems to have, all things considered. Even if the 2017 recruiting class is small, barring an unforeseen disaster, it should be an elite class, even by Ohio State standards, perhaps rivaling the now legendary 2013 recruiting class.

How will they eventually get there? That remains to be seen.

BTN Best of Week 12: All eyes on Michigan State vs. Ohio State

Best of Week 12: All eyes on Michigan State vs. Ohio State
Tom Dienhart, BTN.com Senior Writer via Big Ten Network

This is the penultimate week of the Big Ten schedule. And the action figures to be at a peak, as all 14 schools will be in action headlined by Ohio State’s visit to Michigan State in what could be a de facto Big Ten East championship game. Last season, the Spartans invaded Ohio State and knocked off the No. 3 Buckeyes, 17-14, with backup Tyler O’Connor at the controls. The loss effectively killed Ohio State’s Big Ten and national title hopes while helping propel the Spartans to the Big Ten championship and playoff bid. No doubt, the Buckeyes haven’t forgotten.
