For the first time since 1984, the Big Ten will play nine conference games. Schools will play the other six teams in their division … and three from the opposite division. And, schedule strengths can vary a great deal based on which schools a team does not have to play from the other division.

It's on.

Courtesy of a release from the University of Oklahoma, we now know a little more about Ohio State's preeminent 2016 non-conference football game.

The first of a home-and-home, Urban Meyer's young Buckeyes will travel to Norman to face OU in Gaylord Family Oklahoma Memorial Stadium. The teams will face off Saturday, September 17 at 7:30 p.m. on FOX.

The Sooners, who qualified for last year's College Football Playoff as the second ever four seed -- OSU faithful surely remember the first -- are widely expected to be no worse than a Top 5 team.

The Buckeyes, on the other hand, could finish the season at or near the high end of the polls, but will likely begin the season more in the 10-20 range. Heisman candidate quarterback J.T. Barrett is Ohio State's highest profile returning starter.

Other than the Michigan game, this should easily be OSU's most anticipated game of the fall. Go ahead and free up that evening. We should be in for a good one.

Week 5 brings us the first full-blow Saturday of all Big Ten games, as all 14 teams are in action headlined by a big intra-division tilt with Wisconsin at Michigan. Nebraska will have revenge on its mind when Illinois comes to town. Last year in Champaign, the Huskers suffered an epic meltdown in a 14-13 loss. The Fighting Illini moved 72 yards in 41 seconds, scoring with 10 seconds to play on a 1-yard TD grab by Geronimo Allison. Illinois trailed 13-0 before scoring with 13:21 to play. Nebraska squandered chances, the last when it elected to throw on third

LGHL The age of Mike Weber may be upon us

The age of Mike Weber may be upon us

Visit their fantastic blog and read the full article (and so much more) here

usa-today-9276184.0.jpg

Ohio State's potential new starting running back has a ton of hype coming into 2016, and it's warranted.

"Just hand me the ball...I'm going to make things happen." - Mike Weber

It's been awhile since the running back position was a true question mark at Ohio State. Sure, the days after Maurice Clarett were far from pretty, but from Antonio Pittman, to Beanie Wells, to Carlos Hyde, and most recently Ezekiel Elliott: Ohio State has been very blessed at the running back position.

As we discover every three to four years, the players who were once question marks can sometimes become giant exclamation points, and that may be exactly what Ohio State has in redshirt freshman running back Mike Weber. While he is yet to take a snap on Saturdays, Weber has already gained quite the reputation in Columbus as potentially the next great back to race through the hallowed grounds of the Horseshoe. However, the future didn't always appear so bright for Weber.

"It was tough because I had a good relationship with him and everything was going good...I didn't really expect that to happen but it kind of opened my eyes to the situation of it being a business." - Mike Weber

The easiest way to describe Mike Weber is as a bowling ball. At 5'10, 220 pounds with breakaway speed, Weber was one of the more coveted high school running backs in the 2015 class. A four-star recruit out of Detroit, Michigan, Weber was an extra sweet get for Buckeyes nation considering they had to fend off a late surge from Wolverines head coach Jim Harbaugh.

Thought of the day - What a tangled web we weave when first we practice to deceive! - Sir Walter Scott

— Coach Harbaugh (@CoachJim4UM) February 7, 2015

With the subtweet heard ‘round the world, all of a sudden Weber's commitment to Ohio State wasn't so clear. The issue stemmed from Ohio State running back coach Stan Drayton leaving the Buckeyes to take a position with the Chicago Bears. The problem wasn't so much Drayton leaving, rather Ohio State had forgotten to let their prized recruit know about it.

I'm hurt as hell I ain't gone lie

— Mike Weber (@mikeweberjr) February 5, 2015

Things got real, fast in the Weber recruitment, as all of a sudden Urban Meyer and Harbaugh had their first massive recruiting battle. Luckily for Buckeye Nation, Weber decided to honor his prior commitment to Ohio State, and Meyer had his running back of the future.

"On the team, everybody calls me 'Baby 'Los,' Carlos Hyde ...I guess at running back that's my running style." -€” Mike Weber

All recruiting drama aside, the real talk about Weber begins and ends on the football field. Weber is a nasty runner, who has absolutely no issue with inflicting serious punishment on would-be tacklers. I don't use the term badass often, but how else do you describe a high school junior who chooses this as his first play on his highlight film?

If you haven't seen Weber before, I really hope the above is your first impression, because if a massive truck followed by a sideline long stare-down doesn't make you want to watch this guy play, then I don't know what will.

In Ohio State's power-spread attack, a physical running back is an absolute must. It took Weber all of one play on his highlight film to not only show that he doesn't shy away from contact, he embraces it. Add in a level of swagger that one or two previous Ohio State running backs have been known to show themselves, and you have yourself a badass named Mike Weber.

High school highlights are great and all, and believe me when I say that Weber has more than enough great tape to gush over, but at the end of the day, high school is high school. What can Weber do when it comes time to step on the big boy field?

While Weber's freshman year redshirt (if it wasn't for an ill-timed knee injury, Weber could have very possibly been Elliott's backup) doesn't give us any real game film, Weber put on quite the display in this year's spring game. The above run demonstrates just how physical Weber can be, as after finding and accelerating through the hole, Weber lowers his shoulder on starting safety Malik Hooker around the two-yard line and doesn't stop until he is safely five yards deep into the end zone.

The running back position can, at times, highlight players who don't necessarily deserve all the praise. How impressive is a 65-yard touchdown run if no one touched the player the entire time? Ohio State can find plenty of running backs with 4.5 speed and the ability to run away from defenders, but finding a back like Weber who literally appears to go out of his way to initiate contact is rare and something that could prove to be the difference between Weber and other Ohio State running back Bri'onte Dunn.

"He's a tough nut...He's a guy that has been doing very well." -€” Urban Meyer

Being called ‘tough' by Urban Meyer is praise that shouldn't simply be glossed over: Weber is a force to be reckoned with on the football field. Praise for Weber has come from coaches and players alike, as despite a limited 2015 season, Weber's performance in practice scrimmages were more than enough to open up the eyes of everyone involved.

The best thing to say about Weber is that his impact on the football field will never be doubted. On a team that consistently lines up starters on special teams, there will always be a role on the field for a player like Weber. Whether or not that role consists of 15+ carries a game is yet to be determined, but if Weber earns the starting nod for 2016: look out, because it may be about time fans to want to be like Mike again.

While Ohio State is in Tate Martell's top seven, the Buckeyes are still looking at other options for the QB of the future.

With summer right around the corner, recruiting will pick back up in a big way with the camp circuit starting up. Ohio State will host a slew of camps and the coaching staff will also take part in satellite camps to evaluate new talent. The Buckeyes have a limited number of spots for 2017 and will be looking to add to an already elite class.

Long-time Ohio State quarterback target Tate Martell (Las Vegas, Nev. / Bishop Gorman) is further advancing his recruitment as the five-star narrowed his list to a top seven on Tuesday afternoon. The list obviously included the Buckeyes.

— Tate Martell (@TheTateMartell) May 31, 2016

Quarterback recruiting is definitely taking shape for the 2017 class. Danny Clark (Massillon, Ohio / Archbishop Hoban) is already in the fold and expected to be part of the class, but Ohio State is also chasing Martell as well as Kellen Mond (Bradenton, Fla. / IMG Academy). The Buckeyes are in good position with both prospects at this point, though Auburn has recently made a push with Mond. Ohio State will continue to chase both prospects until if/when they land one.

The biggest thing is getting either one back on campus sometime this summer. As for Martell, Cal and UCLA are thought to be the stiffest competition for the Buckeyes. Again, until one of them commits to the scarlet and gray. Ohio State will continue its pursuit to land a second QB for the class of 2017. If the situation happens where they strike out on both, there's a chance you see Ohio State pocket the scholarship and save a spot for 2018.

The Golden State with the Golden (RB) Answer

It was reported that 2018 running back TJ Pledger (West Hills, Calif. / Chaminade) will be making a visit to Ohio State in the future. Pledger holds 13 total offers from some of the top programs in the country. At 5 feet 9 inches, Pledger has blazing speed, and has time to grow being only a sophomore.

USC is thought to be the top competition as it stands right now, but it's still extremely early in the process. 247Sports has Pledger as a four-star prospect, but he hasn't yet been evaluated by other sites. The fact that Pledger has legitimate interest in Ohio State and wants to visit puts the Buckeyes in the game. If Ohio State is able to get him on campus this summer, it will be game on.

LGHL Ohio State linebacker Raekwon McMillan a potential future NFL star

The junior linebacker is ready to raise his game to another level this season and prepare himself for the NFL.

"2. Raekwon McMillan. The Buckeyes' middle linebacker was just another highly talented player among many in the OSU defense last year. This year, he'll be counted on for much more leadership."

- Chase Goodbread, NFL.com

NFL.com is doing a series called "16 for '16" which features several articles that break down college football's best. This time around, the list was 16 defenders that will be stars in the NFL. Making the list at the second overall spot was Ohio State linebacker Raekwon McMillan. The junior linebacker has been a rising star with the Buckeyes since his highly competitive recruitment ended with him choosing to head to Columbus for his college career. The 6'2 defensive star led the Buckeyes in tackling last season with 119 tackles and played a tremendous role in Ohio State's road to a Fiesta Bowl win over Notre Dame.

Returning for his third season, McMillan is 'the guy' this year, and will look to head a young but talented defensive unit. His leadership will be key early on in the season for the younger players, but his impact will surely be felt all season long. McMillan is a very solid tackler and is quick enough to be a threat in coverage as well. It makes sense that McMillan is gaining attention on a national level with his skill set, and certainly passes the eye test when determining who will be successful in the NFL.

Carrying on @N_Vannett81 legacy reppin the 81 next year

— Jake Hausmann (@Jake_Hausmann) May 31, 2016

Ohio State may have lost Nick Vannett to eligibility, but the Buckeyes have found another No. 81 to take his place. 2016 four-star tight end Jake Hausmann hasn't been on the team for very long, but will be looking to slip into the shoes (or in this case, jersey) of Vannett by taking over No. 81 with his new team. Hausmann along with Luke Farrell committed to Ohio State as a part of their 2016 recruiting class. Hausmann in particular committed to the Buckeyes over offers from Florida State, Michigan, North Carolina, Notre Dame, Penn State, Tennessee, and Wisconsin, among others. He was rated as the fourth-best tight end in the country as well as the fifth-best prospect at any position from the state of Ohio.

Of course, whether Hausmann makes the same impact as Vannett did on the field remains to be seen. Though he may have a difficult time this season, with Marcus Baugh projected to be the starting tight end. It wouldn't be out of the realm of possibility to see some rotating, however, as the Ohio State coaching staff has been known to do that especially getting some work in for some younger players at key positions.

"But the Buckeyes had enough energy left to let out an extended roar upon finding out Monday afternoon that they are a second seed in the Louisville Regional and will be playing Horizon League champion Wright State (44-15) in a semifinal at 2 p.m. Friday."

- Mark Znidar, The Columbus Dispatch

Ohio State baseball sealed a Big Ten tournament championship against Iowa and was slotted to head to the Louisville Regional for the NCAA tournament this past week. Now, the Buckeyes are preparing to play Wright State on Friday, with a chance to extend their excellent postseason run. This run marks the first time since 2009 that Ohio State has made the field for the NCAA tournament and you can bet head coach Greg Beals wants to keep the momentum going. The Buckeyes have won 15 of their last 18 games, an impressive stretch that has been accomplished at the perfect time. Now the team will look to continue that on Friday.

The two-seeded Buckeyes, should they get past Wright State, will have to face either Louisville or Western Michigan at the next stage. And though imagining trying to beat Louisville on their own field isn't fun to think about, Ohio State is focused on one step at a time.

The gift that keeps on giving yields once again.

Oh, Bret Bielema.

The Southeastern Conference's king of gab just doesn't know when to quit.

While previously he's shown inclinations that he couldn't stop thinking about Urban Meyer and Ohio State and then even when he's not trying to talk about them failed to do so, his latest talking point du jour casts a broader net over Ohio sports.

During a Tuesday press conference, Bielema tried (and failed) to land a metaphor about Golden State Warriors star Steph Curry and the Cleveland Cavailiers' LeBron James that'll make even the most die hard Steph Stans groan:

Bielema has told Arkansas players in past "we need to be a little more (Steph) Curry and a little less LeBron" in terms of team chemistry.

— Jon Solomon (@JonSolomonCBS) May 31, 2016

The same LeBron James who's been to six straight NBA Finals, winning two, and hoisting two NBA Finals MVP and four league MVP trophies for his troubles.

LeBron's noteworthiness for being one of the more selfless teammates in the NBA aside, if Arkansas was able to emulate what either player brought from a team chemistry stand point, they'd probably be pretty well off. The Razorbacks limped to an 8-5 season dropping games to Toledo and Texas Tech and finishing the season unranked after beginning in the Top 20.

Alas, at least Bielema realized when he was playing with fire, even if but a little too late:

Bielema also joked that he doesn’t watch basketball and he probably shouldn’t be using that analogy.

usa-today-9043236.0.jpg

The tight end position has routinely been neglected in Urban Meyer's offense, so why should this year be any different?

Marcus Baugh is by all accounts a pretty great football player and person. I mean, the guy may not be super active on Twitter, but when he is, we are treated to low-key hilarious Ricky Bobby quotes and timeless Boobie Miles words of advice.

Last season Baugh made a name for himself as the Buckeyes' number two tight end, consistently providing sound blocks in the Buckeyes' two tight end packages. #BaughMania reached its height during Ohio State's recent spring game, with seven catches for 64 yards, Baugh displayed surprising athleticism for his 6'5 255-pound frame, and production seldom seen from an Ohio State tight end.

In an offense that just lost its top five receiving threats, this could be the perfect opportunity for the returning Baugh to leverage his familiarity with J.T. Barrett into a big year, right?

Sadly, I disagree with the idea that this could finally be the year a talented Ohio State tight end breaks out in Urban Meyer's offense. This is in no way a slight on Baugh and his skillset, but expecting a breakout year from Baugh goes against everything we should expect from an Urban Meyer run offense.

Tight ends under Urban Meyer

The talent has always been there for Meyer's tight ends. First it was leading Fickell-era receiver Jake Stoneburner who was garnering high expectations from the media, as well as himself. However, even after moving from an offense that once threw the ball four times THE ENTIRE GAME against Illinois to the lethal Meyer spread attack, Stoneburner was regulated to an afterthought in Meyer's offense. Sure, Stoneburner managed to increase his yardage and reception totals with Meyer on board, but a receiver stat line of 16 receptions for 269 yards and four touchdowns is hardly anything to get excited over, and this is even after Meyer dubbed Stoneburner as a player who could seamlessly play both tight end and wide receiver.

But maybe Stoneburner wasn't the athlete we all thought he was. Maybe Jeff Heuerman, drafted in the third round of the 2015 NFL Draft by the Denver Broncos, would be the man to push the tight end to the forefront of Meyer's offense. The 2013 season saw success from Heuerman in the form of 26 receptions for 466 yards and four touchdowns, which was great, however a lot of that success came on plays like this:

In an offense that was essentially "find different ways for Carlos Hyde and Braxton Miller to run all over the defense", Heuerman's role was to make the defense pay when their eyes got caught too deep in the Buckeyes' backfield. This is the reason for Heuerman's very high yard per catch total, but the fact of the matter is that Heuerman was usually the lucky recipient of a blown coverage for a lot of his production.

While injuries played a role in Heuerman's senior year yards and touchdown totals being cut in half, the emergence of Nick Vannett as a receiving threat also made Heuerman's already scarce opportunities even more rare. Vannett managed to score five touchdowns in Ohio State's magical 2014 season, and while a different Buckeyes quarterback meant a more sophisticated passing game, both Vannett and Heuerman continued to mostly produce by virtue of their involvement in the running game. This is evidenced by Vannett's touchdown in the national championship against Oregon:

With a productive junior season, and a skill set that had scouts comparing Vannett to the great Rob Gronkowski, the sky seemed to be the limit for Vannett's senior season in Columbus. You know where this is going. For the first time in Meyer's tenure at Ohio State the top two tight ends on the roster failed to find the end zone even once, as the plays that used to leave tight ends streaking down the field seemed to be replaced with more wide receiver focused play calls.

Put simply, Urban Meyer has never utilized his obviously talented tight ends at Ohio State, so why should we expect a change now? There are two key reasons that potentially point toward a Baugh breakout.

Spring Game hero

While I'm not quite in the camp that says any spring game takeaways are completely useless, I do agree that there is a wild amount of speculation that comes from basically an open practice. We've seen the great Michael Thomas flourish in the spring game before later transitioning to a hero on Fall Saturdays, but there was still an entire season between these two feats.

It is true that Baugh's situation is notably different from a guy like Thomas, as Baugh, barring injury, projects to be Ohio State's starting tight end this season. The increased usage in the spring game that led to six receptions for Baugh could be a sign that Meyer is finally ready to more regularly incorporate the tight end into his offense, or it could be a case of Barrett finding more time than usual to check down to his tight end in a spring game that typically lacks quarterback pressure and big plays downfield. You can decide for yourself, but I'm taking the latter option.

Ohio State weapon selection

The other case for a Baugh breakout is in regards to Ohio State's weapon repertoire. Heuerman and Vannett undoubtedly saw their opportunities decrease at the hands of the numerous NFL wide receivers in the Ohio State offense, and Baugh just saw most of those playmakers depart for the NFL. Add in the stable quarterback situation and a new running back and it appears that all the stars are aligning for Baugh to get all the opportunities in the world.

Once again, you can take these above facts as a sign that Baugh is sure to breakout, but I wouldn't be too quick to sleep on the Buckeyes options at receiver. Noah Brown would have started last season if not for a broken leg. Corey Smith makes an impact in his own special way, and a barrage of skilled freshmen receivers is highlighted by the talented Austin Mack. This doesn't even mention the return of Curtis Samuel or the potential emergence of Mike Weber. All in all, where does Baugh get his touches from?

None of this is to say I'm predicting Baugh to have a terrible statistical season, however the past has shown us that Meyer seldom finds room in his offense to consistently feature the tight end, no matter how talented the tight end, and no matter how depleted the roster. With Baugh's athleticism and large frame there is no reason why he can't be a red zone monster if properly utilized. The question is, does Urban Meyer care?
