Athletes sue Ivy League over its no-scholarship policy​

A pair of basketball players from Brown allege in a federal lawsuit that the Ivy League's policy of not offering athletic scholarships amounts to a price-fixing agreement that denies athletes proper financial aid and payment for their services.

The lawsuit was filed Tuesday in U.S. District Court in Connecticut by attorneys representing Grace Kirk, a member of Brown's women's team, and Tamenang Choh, who played for the men's team from 2017 through 2022. They are seeking class-action status to represent all current and former athletes at the eight Ivy League schools dating back to those recruited since March 2019.

The suit argues Ivy League schools illegally conspired to limit financial aid and not compensate athletes for their services.

"In either case, regardless of whether considered as a restraint on the price of education, the value of financial aid, the price of athletic services, or the level of compensation to Ivy League athletes, the Ivy League Agreement is per se illegal," the lawsuit states.

Harvard, Yale, Brown, Princeton, Dartmouth, Cornell, Columbia and Penn don't offer merit scholarships of any kind, including athletic scholarships. The policy, which dates back to 1954, makes the Ivy League the only Division I athletic conference that prohibits member schools from offering athletic scholarships.

Ivy League executive director Robin Harris defended the policy in a statement responding to the legal action, noting there are a wide variety of options when it comes to opportunities available to college-level athletes.

"The Ivy League athletics model is built upon the foundational principle that student-athletes should be representative of the wider student body, including the opportunity to receive need-based financial aid," she said. "In turn, choosing and embracing that principle then provides each Ivy League student-athlete a journey that balances a world-class academic experience with the opportunity to compete in Division I athletics and ultimately paves a path for lifelong success."

But attorneys for the Brown athletes point out that other elite academic schools, such as Stanford and Duke, do offer athletic scholarships.

"These schools are not part of the Ivy League, but they demonstrate they can maintain stellar academic standards while competing for excellent athletes, and without agreed upon limits on price," the lawsuit said.

Just sayin': If they wanted an athletic scholarship then they should of went to a school that offers them.

Ohio State to face Michigan State in Big Ten Tournament third round​

Not many would have predicted it coming into the week, but the No. 13 seed Ohio State men's basketball team will play a game on Friday in the Big Ten Tournament. After having to hold on for dear life on Wednesday to defeat No. 12 seed Wisconsin 65-57, the Buckeyes managed to take care of business against No. 5 seed Iowa on Friday in a 73-69 win.

The Scarlet and Gray advance to the third round of the Big Ten Tournament and keep hopes of an improbable NCAA Tournament berth -- which will only happen if Ohio State wins all five games at the United Center -- alive. On Friday, the Buckeyes will face No. 4 seed Michigan State. The Spartans had a double bye, so this will be their first game in this year's Big Ten Tournament.

Ohio State and Michigan State will tip off at approximately 2:30 p.m. ET from the United Center in the third round of the Big Ten Tournament.


Prediction: MSU 71, Ohio State 64
Ohio State is finally rounding out into the team we expected them to be after a disappointing season. But this will be the third game in three days for the Buckeyes and I got to believe there will be some tired legs in the second half. Michigan State makes a few more shots than Ohio State in the final minutes to pick up the victory.

With the benefit of a double-bye, Michigan State men's basketball has been able to sit back and enjoy watching the first two days of the 2023 Big Ten Tournament.

Now, the Spartans know who they will play in their first tournament game — Ohio State. After a first round win over 12-seed Wisconsin on Wednesday, the 13th-seeded Buckeyes defeated Iowa in the second round on Thursday, 73-69, to advance to the quarterfinal round where Michigan State awaits.

The Ohio State men's basketball season isn't over quite yet. The No. 13 seed Buckeyes defeated No. 12 seed Wisconsin 65-57 on Wednesday evening in the first game of the Big Ten Tournament to advance to Day 2.

Thanks to the win, the Scarlet and Gray go marching on and extend the 2022-23 season for at least one more day. On Thursday, the Scarlet and Gray will face No. 5 seed Iowa in the Big Ten Tournament second round.

The Buckeyes and the Hawkeyes met twice this year, splitting the season series.

Ohio State opens the festivities in the first game of the tournament on Wednesday, when the 13th-seeded Buckeyes will take on No. 12 seed Wisconsin in a rematch of a Feb. 2 matchup in Columbus. The Badgers beat the Buckeyes, 65-60, in the lone regular-season meeting, but Ohio State has a chance at revenge at 6:30 p.m. in just three days.

However, that wasn't the only line of questioning Harrison received on Wednesday. He was also asked about the future of Ohio State's defensive line and what it will look like under the leadership of players like JT Tuimoloau, Jack Sawyer and others. Harrison offered nothing but praise for his former teammates.

"I feel like those guys are gonna be really dominant," Harrison said. "One of the best (defensive lines) in the country, leading the nation in sacks, TFLs and all of that. Everybody in that room is a great ball player and all of them have potential through the roof. I know that they want it. They want it bad. I'm excited to see what my guys do next year."

Harrison expects Tuimoloau, Sawyer and known commodities like Mike Hall Jr., Tyleik Williams and Ty Hamilton to be the leaders of the position room in 2023. Still, Harrison believes another player could break into that category as the Buckeyes dive into the regular season next fall.

"You've seen all the JTs and the Jacks play, but one guy I am excited about is Caden Curry. He's a freshman. He's gonna be a really good player. Just the way he moves, and his motor never stops. I'm excited to see what he does. Really just everybody, but he's a guy that stands out to me as a really good player."

Harrison also sees tremendous potential in two of Curry's classmates, Omari Abor and Kenyatta Jackson. He said both possess the athleticism necessary to become a frequent disruption in opposing backfields in the future. The key for Abor and Jackson to unlock that potential will be to continue to build strength in the weight room and perfect their technique under defensive line coach Larry Johnson's tutelage.

"Omari is still figuring it out," Harrison said. "You can see flashes when you say, 'Wow, it's in there.' He's gonna pull it out. He's gotta get in the weight room and get a little bigger, but I am excited to see what Omari does. He's gonna be a really good player for the Buckeyes in the future. And he's a young guy, so it's OK for him to be in that position where he is still figuring it out.

"Same with KJ. He is gonna be one of those players where it's the next step. Some of the things he does he doesn't even realize are special because he's just playing football. I'm like, 'KJ, not everybody can do what you just did,' but he doesn't even realize that. So I'm excited to see those guys get bigger, stronger and faster, and for them to get more comfortable in their body, technique and play speed."

I’m cautious to put too much stock into one win, but the Buckeyes have shown gradual improvement in the past two games, which gives me a reason to believe we could see a second straight victorious performance on Wednesday – especially if Ohio State shows up on the glass as it did three days ago.
