Classic Christmas Movies Beloved by Millions...And The Things That Are Wrong With Them

There used to be this recurring discussion on the old Mike & Mike show about the cartoon of Rudolph The Red-Nosed Reindeer. Golic had come to notice, as the more-or-less adult he was, that Santa was not exactly sympathetic to Rudolph's plight as a young deer. You'd think the North Pole, of all places, would have an anti-bullying policy, but no, no Naughty List for that. And Rudolph's father was disturbingly unsupportive as well. Which coincidentally reminds me of this image someone posted online yesterday:

RUDOLPH THE RED FINAL.jpg

Anyway, someone brought up favorite Christmas movies today, and I was reminded of A Wonderful Life. I first stumbled onto this film when I had worked really late on Christmas Eve, came home & flipped on the TV to PBS just as it was starting. Loved it then, but as time has passed I've noticed an issue or two. One, George Bailey has more than a little drinking problem. As things go wrong for him, George hits the bottle (and almost hits a couple of his kids.) The whole town taking up a collection for him won't fix that, unless some of the money is spent on therapy. Also, the druggist, Mr. Gower, should have gone to the slammer for assault after he pummeled young George in (booze again) a drunken rage. Sure, he'd been notified his own son was dead, but that hardly justifies physically attacking someone else's young son. While we're on the subject, George's Uncle Billy most likely lost the money for the bank deposit because he, too, was a wee bit tipsy, as he appeared to be quite often. That whole movie is as rum-riddled as a re-gifted Christmas fruit cake.

Also, my kid used to absolutely seethe at the early scene when George and Mary are throwing rocks thru the windows of the Old Granville House, making wishes. George says

"Mary, I know what I'm gonna do tomorrow, and the next day, and the next year, and the year after that. I'm shakin' the dust of this crummy little town off my feet and I'm gonna see the world. Italy, Greece, the Parthenon, the Coliseum. Then, I'm comin' back here to go to college and see what they know. And then I'm gonna build things. I'm gonna build airfields, I'm gonna build skyscrapers a hundred stories high, I'm gonna build bridges a mile long..."

And then Mary throws a rock through a window, but she won't say what she wished for, although it becomes clear later. Basically, she wished that every single thing George has ever dreamed of for his life will never come true. And she gets her wish. Might explain his drinking problem.

Anyhoo, if you've got a pet peeve about some annually aired classic that everybody else loves unconditionally, feel free to vent about it here rather than out there in the real world. That way, maybe non-virtual people will still be speaking to you by New Year's Eve.

OHIO STATE SELLS OUT GAME IN ST. JOHN ARENA AGAINST CLEVELAND STATE

98942_h.jpg

The Buckeyes' return to historic St. John Arena will be met with a capacity crowd as the Nov. 23 game against Cleveland State is officially sold out, Ohio State announced on Friday.

The team returns to the historic venue for the first time since 2010, and this marks the first sellout in St. John Arena since March 24, 2008 – an NIT game against California.

Since the Buckeyes moved to the nearby Schottenstein Center as their official home court, they're a perfect 5-0 in games played in St. John Arena, and they'll look to improve upon that record against the Vikings.

Ohio State is an undefeated 3-0 on the season with road wins against 2018 NCAA Tournament teams Cincinnati and Creighton.

With the team off to a hot start and playing in a beloved arena for the first time in nearly eight years in front of a sold out crowd, I think it's safe to expect St. John to be rocking.

BUCKEYES TRAVEL TO CREIGHTON FOR GAVITT GAMES MATCHUP

Gavitt Tipoff Games
The Gavitt Tipoff Games is an annual series between the Big Ten and BIG EAST Conferences and named in honor of Dave Gavitt, founder of the BIG EAST and basketball visionary. The series is in its fourth year and will span eight years with games being played on home sites. The Games will be played in the first full week of the college basketball season. The Buckeyes are 1-0 in the event with a win vs. Providence in 2016.

Early Notable Numbers
C.J. Jackson is averaging 19 points a game and has the Buckeyes off to a 2-0 start … he needs four made 3-pointers to reach 100 for his Ohio State career (96-264/.364) … he has scored 645 career points and is on pace to become Ohio State’s next 1,000-point scorer … Jaedon LeDee scored 16 points the last time out vs. Purdue Fort Wayne on just two shots from the field … he went 12 of 14 at the foul line in 13 minutes off the bench … freshman Luther Muhammad has started both games this season and averages 28.5 minutes and 11.5 points a game … another rookie, Duane Washington Jr., is 7 of 11 from 3-point range (.636) in two appearances … Andre Wesson reached 100 career rebounds with two at Cincinnati … he will reach 1,000 career minutes with three at Creighton … Kyle Young has yet to miss a shot this season (5-5) and is 6-7 from the foul line and 1-1 from 3-point range.

Scouting The Creighton Bluejays
Creighton will play host to the Buckeyes in The 2018 Gavitt Games. Creighton enters the game at 2-0 after home wins over Western Illinois (78-67) and East Tennessee State (75-69). Four Bluejays average 10 or more points led by Ty-Shon Alexander (16.0 ppg.). Damien Jefferson leads the team in rebounding with seven boards a game. Over the first two contests, Creighton has connected on 20-of-38 3-pointers (.526). Ohio State last faced Creighton Nov. 11, 2004 at the Guardians Classic in Kansas City, Missouri. The Bluejays won that game 65-63. Ohio State has not played in Omaha since Dec. 30, 1972, a 79-71 win for Creighton. Ohio State’s only road win came in the series opener Dec. 21, 1936 (35-28). The Buckeyes are 5-3 all-time vs. the Bluejays.

Ohio State vs. The Big East
Ohio State is 65-30 all-time vs. the teams that currently make up the Big East Conference. The Buckeyes have faced each current member at least twice with Butler being the team with the most games played against the Buckeyes (42/OSU leads 31-11). Ohio State had Providence have met the fewest times (2, OSU 2-0). Ohio State fell to Butler 67-66 in overtime a year ago at the PK80 event in Portland, Oregon (11/26/17). The Buckeyes faced Providence in the Gavitt Games in Columbus Nov. 17, 2016. The Buckeyes won that game 72-67.

Defense, conceptually

I realize most of you are fans with limited experience actually studying film, but the 4-2 is common in college football because of the spread This year, at times, we have reduced the box to 5. l realize we don't have the LB's and CB's we have had in the past, but we still have talent. I think schematically we have been ineffective this year, particularly earlier in the season. If felt we were better against Mich St, but the running QB hurt us a couple of times, and because of the score, they went away from it.

To beat scUM, which at this point has to be our primary goal, we are going to have to bring 7 in the box at times, and still be able to handle their spread packages without subbing every situational change. I think we can do that, but scUM is a tough challenge because they not only play old school football, but they have a dual threat QB. We have got to continue to get more physical and play better gap integrity if we are going to be scUM. With that said, I think it takes 35 to beat them this year.

2019 Ticket Prices

SKULL SESSION: EDITORS' TALK BRETT MCMURPHY'S STORY, OHIO STATE TICKET PRICES GOING UP, AND TERRELLE PRYOR RELEASED

TICKET PRICES COMING UP.
Ohio State's attendance is the worst it's been in memory, and the team has an absolutely brilliants plan to help make up the lost revenue: charge even more money to the few people who actually want to go!

From Emily Bench of Columbus Business First:

The Ohio State University Athletic Department is asking the Board of Trustees to hike the cost of reserved seats for the 2019 football season to $702, up from $639 this year. Box and club season ticket prices for mext year would cost $851, up from $789 this season
.
.
.
The current student ticket price of $34 per game will not change, and will be maintained through at least through the 2020 season. Student season tickets also will stay the same at $238.

The game against Florida Atlantic would be the cheapest for fans, with single game reserved seats costing $60 and box seats costing $85. Penn State would be the most expensive game – $198 for reserved seats and $223 for box seats.

Also, you have to love the timing of the announcement. Ohio State released this news literally minutes after Bretty McMurphy ran his story, which is the absolute perfect way to dump this news to ensure minimal outrage. The made online people were already using all of their mad online at the moment.

I don't know if it was intentional, but if it was, tip the cap.
