The Buckeyes fired on all cylinders for the first time since the Rutgers game.

That was unexpected.

Ohio State completely dominated every facet of the game, showing the absurd ceiling this team has. In the stats preview for this game, we noted that the Buckeyes have the tenth-highest volatility in the country this year -- the team's ceiling is as good as anyone in the country, but the offense is volatile enough to play below an average team as well. Against tenth-ranked Nebraska we saw just how good the team can be.

Ohio St Nebraska
Rushing SR 52% 35%
Rushing exp plays 4 1
Passing SR 63% 23%
Passing exp plays 2 2
Red zone TDs 67% 0%
Scoring opps efficiency 5.86 1.5
Drive efficiency 100% (0) 22% (3)
Pts off turnovers 14 0

In the table above, scoring opportunity efficiency looks at the average points scored per scoring opportunity -- drives with a first down past the opponents' 40 yard line. Drive efficiency looks at the percentage of drives that were scoring opportunities. The number in parentheses is the number of three-and-outs the offense had. These stats don't include the fourth quarter, since all of that was garbage time.

In the advanced stats preview we noted that three advanced stats would matter most:

Defensive passing IsoPPP (Nebraska's explosive passing): The one major area where Nebraska seems to have an advantage over the Ohio State defense is in passing IsoPPP. The Buckeye defense rarely allows efficient passes, but the ones they do tend to be big plays.

Rushing IsoPPP (big Ohio State runs): The Buckeye run game hasn't been dominant since the Rutgers game, but the Nebraska defense has a poor rushing IsoPPP, meaning that the successful runs they do allow tend to be fairly big. Explosive running hasn't been one of Ohio State's strong points unless Curtis Samuel is heavily involved in the ground game, so it's not clear whether Ohio State can take advantage of this weakness.

Passing success rate: Ohio State's passing success rate has declined in Big Ten play despite a better showing for short-yardage passing last week. We're likely to see more of that against Nebraska -- but the Nebraska defense has been solid preventing big passing plays.

Defensive rushing stuff rate. Maybe the most lopsided matchup is between the Ohio State run defense and the Nebraska rushing offense. The Nebraska offensive line allows an incredibly high number of stuffed runs, and the Ohio State defense is the best in the country at creating them.

Ohio State scored on every single offensive possession that the starting offense was on the field, and could have scored on both possessions for the second team. They created a scoring opportunity on every offensive possession, while the defense only allowed two scoring opportunities (one following a fumbled punt return) and didn't allow a touchdown. From a drive perspective, the only thing that could have been improved were the two field goal attempts instead of touchdowns -- but even then, the starting offense averaged nearly six points per scoring opportunity.

Pass efficiency and young receivers

Passing success rate was one of the four most important stats to watch entering the game, as it's been for most of the season. Nebraska's solid overall pass defense seemed to allow a fairly high passing success rate, but they lock down explosive passing plays. The coaching staff put together an excellent gameplan that targeted the softer underneath coverage with short routes, avoiding the excellent Nebraska safeties.

The offense actually could have been more efficient on standard downs, averaging 6.6 yards to go on third downs. With that average distance, there were a number of third-and-long passing opportunities. The Buckeyes' incredible drive efficiency can be attributed to their success on third downs, where they went 11-of-15 overall and 6-of-8 passing through three quarters.

Barrett rarely targeted anyone deep -- one of the few pass targets over 20 yards was the second half opening strike to Curtis Samuel. But he was extremely efficient, posting his best passing success rate of the year (edging out his performance over Rutgers). Barrett missed on a few red zone throws (including a wide open Mike Weber near the end zone) but was on-point overall.

Also notable was that some younger receivers were able to get involved, including multiple targets for Binjimen Victor and K.J. Hill.

Evaluating the defense

It's very difficult to evaluate the defense's performance since Tommy Armstrong was out for most of the game. However, it's fair to say that the front seven created as much negative plays as expected. Before the game we noted that Nebraska's offensive line can allow a fair number of tackles for loss, but the running backs do a decent job generating explosive plays when they get an opportunity. The Buckeyes had seven tackles for loss on just 24 Huskers runs -- that's a stuff rate of 29% of Nebraska's running plays.

Were there any negatives?

The offensive coaching staff rightly believed they could win by throwing short passes and using the run game to pick up second- and third-and-short plays. So the running backs didn't get a very high volume, with the streak of sub-100 yard performances on the ground continuing. Weber and Samuel averaged 6.5 and 8.2 yards per carry respectively and the 52% rushing success rate is far more efficient than we've seen in recent weeks. But there's still room for improvement, particularly because the inside zone run game seemed relatively ineffective.

Overall, this game showed that Ohio State does at least have the ceiling to be a championship contender -- they just have to be more consistent.

J.T. Barrett, pick-sixes highlight the Buckeyes’ dominant two-way effort.

Mistakes are a part of life. As human beings, we commit errors of all shapes and sizes on a daily basis. We attempt to right those wrongs, learn from our mistakes, and move on with our lives. Life is short, after all.

But there are some goofs that, for one reason or another, will live on forever—like declaring Thomas Dewey the next president of the United States.

#OTD #1948 Dewey Defeats Truman. Ack, Er, Um. Truman Defeats Dewey. Who shot that immortal victory photo? https://t.co/d8Dzc3ZOIH pic.twitter.com/V8EuWNQQsv

— APIC (@APIC_USA) November 2, 2016

The Chicago Tribune has endured despite its infamous gaffe, but the blunder spawned one of the most recognizable photographs in the history of American politics, one of an elated Harry Truman showing off the incorrect headline highlighting the first edition of the Nov. 3, 1948, issue of the Tribune.

The Tribune was misled by inaccurate polling leading up to the election, and because of a printers’ strike, managing editor J. Loy Maloney was forced to make a final decision on the first edition’s headline hours earlier than normal.

In the end, Truman won the Electoral College vote by a comfortable 303 to 189 margin, and now the Tribune typically has to eat some crow every four years.

After gliding through the first month of the season, lately Ohio State has found itself fraught with the sort of inconsistency to be expected of an extremely green unit. Above all else, the Buckeyes appeared focused on fixing their wrongs in recent weeks rather than overhauling what they do on either side of the ball.

Saturday night, Ohio State sorted out its issues while also incorporating a few fun wrinkles in a 62-3, Truman-esque beat down of Nebraska, its second straight home demolition of the Cornhuskers. (The Buckeyes prevailed 63-38 in 2012.) Ohio State cobbled together its best all-round effort since its stunningly easy win in Norman in September. J.T. Barrett (and Joe Burrow in relief) conducted an outstanding offensive effort (590 yards, 11-of-15 on third downs) and the Silver Bullets limited Nebraska to 204 yards, with the unit recording pick-sixes No. 5 and No. 6 of the season (a new school record) in the process.

On to the rankings!

1. A flawless offensive performance

Mirroring the relaxed intensity their head coach had exhibited during the week—an act that turned out to be just that—the Buckeyes ambushed the Cornhuskers in the first half, starting off with Damon Webb’s pick-six on Tommy Armstrong Jr.’s first throw of the game and ending the first two quarters with landslide advantages in first downs (plus-10), point differential (plus-28), and yardage (plus-114).

Barrett was magical, working behind an improving offensive line that provided him with plenty of airspace. And even when Barrett was pressured, he calmly evaded the impending duress and completed passes down the field. The redshirt junior quarterback directed touchdown drives of 57, 83, and 85 yards en route to a 14-of-23 first-half showing that featured a pair of TD tosses. Barrett did misfire on at least a pair of sure TD passes (one an intermediate touch pass to Mike Weber, another a deep slant to Curtis Samuel), but the mistakes only delayed inevitable scores by Ohio State, which converted seven of its eight third downs in the first half.

The coaching staff also displayed more exotic ways and a more fervent desire to involve Samuel, who tallied 103 yards on 12 rushes+catches.

And even as the game ventured into blowout territory early in the second half, the Buckeyes continued to work on their maligned passing game—Ohio State dialed up a pass on to convert a 4th-and-1, for example—and Barrett (playing in front of his high school coach for the first time) finished with 290 yards and four TDs through the air.

2. Tommy Armstrong Jr.’s quick recovery

Good vibrations all around after Armstrong Jr. shockingly returned to the Nebraska sideline in the third quarter after he had to be taken off the field in an ambulance following a scary first half injury. Hopefully Armstrong Jr. can get back to the field sooner rather than later for a team that still has plenty to play for this season despite back-to-back road losses under the lights.

3. Jump pass!

A savvy connection from Barrett to Samuel just before the second quarter clock expired. The jump pass is like the friend you randomly see once or twice and year, and afterwards you’re left wondering why you don’t spend more time together.

4. Deep pass!

No weenie arm here on the other Barrett-to-Samuel connection that resulted in a touchdown. This was a very nice throw from Barrett following his aforementioned shortcomings throwing downfield in the first half.

5. Vegas

EVERYONE thought Ohio State being a 17-point favorite was crazy talk. These Vegas people are ridiculously good at their jobs.

6. Michigan State

After winning at least 11 games from 2013-15, the Spartans (2-7, 0-6 in Big Ten) are officially bowl-ineligible. Less than a year ago this team went into Ohio Stadium and beat the No. 1 team in the country and ended up in the College Football Playoff.

What a collapse.

However, count me in the group that maintains Ohio State will still receive a stiff test (at least for a half) from Michigan State in two weeks up in East Lansing.

But you knew that already.

Occasionally, football fans are forced to sit back and think about the consequences of loving such a fundamentally violent sport. All of the rule changes, all of the efforts at improving player safety, nominal or otherwise, can’t completely legislate the violence out of a game whose foundations are violent. Football, as it is, requires hard hits; the consequences of those hits are occasionally more grim than we’d like to reckon with.

Look no further than Ohio State’s game against Nebraska on Saturday night under the lights in Columbus. Tommy Armstrong, the Huskers’ stalwart quarterback, fell victim to the traps of velocity when he was hit in the legs (perhaps unnecessarily) by a Buckeye defender and landed on his head on the unforgiving surface of the Ohio State sideline. The motionlessness was immediate; it was clear to all involved that something was terribly wrong with the Husker QB.

During the delay, as trainers and medical staff tended to Armstrong, we were treated to golf-announcer whispers and a sickening overhead view of the proceedings. Armstrong was carted off in an ambulance after a long delay, and returned to the field in sweatpants late in the game to raucous applause—a miracle survivor of what might have been a career-ending blow.

All of this served to stifle the action on the field, and rightly so. But what happened on the field was something Ohio State fans can’t have been prepared for: an absolute drubbing of a top-10 foe, a victory in all phases that left no doubt that the Buckeyes have the potential to play with the best teams in the country when they find a way to fire on all cylinders.

Prayers up for Tommy Armstrong. He deserves all the best. It feels a little cheaper tonight, but let’s look at some Buckeyes who deserve accolades in light of the final score.

Blue chip stocks

Curtis Samuel, H-back: Urban Meyer almost certainly doesn’t check Twitter, but you wouldn’t know it given the Buckeye play-calling on Saturday night. The rising tide of calls for Samuel to become the focal point of the offense was finally answered against the Huskers, and boy, did it pay off.

Brooklyn’s Finest ended Saturday’s contest with 137 receiving yards on eight catches, 41 yards on five carries, and two total touchdowns. He did that in two quarters and change; with the game well in hand, there was no sense in risking the health of the most dynamic offensive player in college football.

Ohio State’s offense looks its best when its best player has the ball in his hands. Astonishing stuff.

J.T. Barrett, QB: Hop in your time machine with me, if you will. Let’s go back in time and watch a vintage J.T. Barrett performance, one in which he records...

  • 290 passing yards
  • 4 passing touchdowns
  • 0 interceptions
  • 39 rushing yards

Feels like 2014 Penn State, maybe, or 2015 Virginia Tech. Actually, that’s how he finished Saturday’s Nebraska tilt, in which he often looked like the Barrett of old. There were a few of the usual bad overthrows (though none of the bad underthrows!), but he counteracted these whiffs with some beautiful passes in tight windows and a few slippery escapes that he had no business making.

Barrett came out in the third quarter. Had he stayed in the game (which would’ve been silly), his stat line would’ve been one for the ages. It was such a breath of fresh air to see him connecting with his receivers again, actually hitting guys in stride and seeing a hard cap on his designed carries instead of shouldering the entire workload himself.

The whole dang secondary: The law firm of Conley, Lattimore, and Hooker were open for business all evening. Ohio State’s secondary—also including Damon Webb, Damon Arnette, and Denzel Ward—held the Huskers’ pair of QBs to 9/33 passing. with no TDs and two interceptions. One of those picks went back for six, as Damon Webb took a pass to the house on the Huskers’ opening possession on a tip-drill snag eerily reminiscent of Arnette’s grab last week. Malik Hooker matched the effort by taking another pick 50+ yards to the house later in the game.

It was a stifling performance for the pass defense despite a few early easy first downs by Armstrong. The Buckeye defensive backs seemed like they were always in perfect position to break up Armstrong’s passes, even when he was right on the money with them. It was a game to be proud of for the secondary, and one which makes it seem like Ohio State miiiiiight be able to hang with anybody. (Put your hand down, Austin Carr, we see you.)

Solid investments

Sam Hubbard, DE: Hubbard finished Saturday’s game with five total tackles, including three solos and two tackles for loss. Hubbard was quiet against Penn State and Northwestern, but he made up for it in a big way against the Huskers. Great to see the former Notre Dame lacrosse commit (drink!) back in form.

Tyquan Lewis, DE: Lewis has quietly been everywhere for the Buckeye defense this season. Saturday’s contest was no different. He didn’t light up the stat sheet, but he made sure his presence was felt. One of Lewis’ best plays of the evening came on fourth-and-one for the Huskers; he got to backup QB Ryker Fyfe so fast that his pass went astray and the Buckeyes regained possession.

Lewis harangued the opposition all evening. After back-to-back games in which the Buckeye pass rush crashed back down to earth, it was refreshing to see Lewis get after Armstrong and Fyfe so relentlessly.

Junk bonds

Dontre Wilson, Punt Returner: SMH. S. M. H.

Buy/Sell

BUY: Demario McCall, Punt Returner. See above. At some point you have to acknowledge that Wilson is a sunk cost, at least when it comes to special teams. You’ve invested a lot of time in energy in making him a competent punt returner; it hasn’t paid off. Gotta move on to one of the 150 other 5-star skill players on the roster at some point.

BUY: Ohio State’s tunnel entrance. If you didn’t get chills watching this you should call a doctor and get your pulse checked.

BUY: The Cardale Jones Difference. The last time Cardale Jones suited up for Ohio State, the Buckeyes won by 59 points. He showed up on the sideline tonight; the final score was 62-3. #makes #you #think

BUY: Jump pass! Tim Tebow’s more of a Sunday guy, but we like a J.T. Barrett Saturday just fine.

SELL: Taking your foot off the gas. One more touchdown and the internet would have had a lot of material regarding the Ohio State score. Not #nice of them to let that possibility go.

BUY: All the little things. Ohio State protected J.T. Barrett for the first time in weeks, didn’t get stifled by penalties, and looked its best on third down. The little things are coming together for the Buckeyes at the right time.

OhioState-Nebraska-game.jpg

During the patented Scarlet Out at The Shoe, this game is indeed another game to that the Buckeye Head Coach and his crew would like to improve their deficiencies offensively and their inability to stay consistent on the defensive side of the ball. This is another battle of two Top-10 teams that are vying for a spot in this season’s College Football Playoff and even though they are at home, the Buckeyes cannot take this Cornhusker team lightly. Both the Buckeyes and the Cornhuskers come in with identical records at 7-1 and both are currently 4-1 in conference play. Both teams suffered one loss, Ohio State suffered their first loss to Penn State at Happy Valley and Nebraska fell to in Madison. How would things go for both teams during this clash of two teams with rich histories and traditions.
imgres-1-11.jpg
The Silver Bullets started out with a bang. They set the tone with another pick-six courtesy of the Scarlet Curtain member, Damon Webb. The play began when Raekwon McMillan tipped the pass enough to alter the trajectory, then the Nebraska Wideout attempted to secure the catch, but the mistakenly tipped it straight up into the air into the waiting arms of Damon Webb who showed off some of his sweet juke moves as he took it to the house for another pick-six. Tommy Armstrong attempted to make the tackle but whiffed on it. This makes it a team record 5th pick-six of the season and it looks like they are primed to have another defensive showing during primetime. On the next possession for Nebraska, they took it deep into the Red Zone, but their drive stalled and they ended up taking the points and kicked a field goal. The Buckeyes gave up some splash plays, but they stifled the Nebraska Offense when they were in a good position to score.

imgres-23.jpg
The Buckeyes Offense looked good in the first half imposing their will on the vaunted Blackshirt Defense of Nebraska. They looked to be in sync and the Offensive Line play showed improvement ensuring J.T. Barrett remained upright. J.T. Barrett is a magician, making plays while on the run. He found Terry McLaurin in the back of the end zone after scrambling for his life. The Buckeyes are showing signs of returning to form as their skill players on for the offense seem to be gaining some confidence in their abilities. McLaurin is young and he has had an up and down season so far, but the young man finally made a play that put the Buckeyes ahead of the Cornhuskers. The Buckeyes finished the first quarter with a 14-3 lead and they look to get the ball into the hands of their playmakers at Wide Receiver as J.T. Barrett has hit four different receivers to build the lead over the Cornhuskers.

images-5-4.jpg
In the beginning of the Second Quarter, the Buckeyes opened up the playbook a little more, the Buckeyes are noticeably looking to take deep shots to the end zone. Zach Smith must have gotten into his Zone 6 members by the lack of offensive productivity beyond Curtis Samuel, Noah Brown and Dontre Wilson. They are getting open due to the overall balance of the playcalling. I, for one, am pleased by the amount of consistency and effort that I have seen so far and I hope that they can continue this effort into the rest of the season. Zone 6 aren’t the only members of the team that has been succeeding because the Offensive Line is doing their job and it is amazing to see them play with this type of intensity. Mike Weber benefited from The Slobs as he scored on a 23-yard dash to the end zone. Curtis Samuel isn’t doing so bad either with 36 rushing yards midway through the First Quarter. True Freshman and prized recruit Binjimen Victor almost made a circus catch on a third and long. He failed to maintain control for his first score of the season and it would’ve been huge for the Buckeyes. The crowd would have gone wild, but another missed opportunity–for the Buckeyes to dish out the knockout blow, but I am sure that Coach Meyer and Zone 6 Coach Zach Smith will find a way to put him in a position to make an impact.

During football games, it is natural to talk trash and have some fun with it. The gambler Dontre Wilson muffed another punt as he was looking ahead, trying to find a lane for the return. Nebraska took advantage of the great field position as Tommy Armstrong Jr converted a 3rd and long and he was hit out of bounds by Malik Hooker. He was knocked out at the Ohio State 24-yard line, but after landing he laid there motionless and most likely unconscious. There was a long delay, but the medical staff was being cautious and they tended to the fallen Cornhusker. He left after all precautions were done and he was packed into the ambulance with his father and they set out to the local hospital to see what had occurred and if he suffered any major injuries. Hopefully, with some prayers, he will be okay and healthy, but for the time being a backup quarterback will have to take the reigns.

imgres-2-7.jpg
After play had resumed, Senior Quarterback Ryker Fyfe comes in on a 4th and 1 play. They attempted to trick the Buckeyes on a QB scramble, but Tyquan Lewis relentlessly pursued him and got the sack to turn the ball over on downs. The Silver Bullets are playing with a fire that I haven’t seen in a while and as they turned away the Blackshirts, they drove the ball into Nebraska territory and well into the enemy red zone. Curtis Samuel has been the playmaker for the Buckeyes as he was the guy that converted most of the first downs for the Scarlet and Gray. J.T. Barrett and Curtis Samuel capped off the first half with Urban Meyer’s patented jump pass to Curtis Samuel to extend the Buckeyes lead to 28. The Buckeyes finished off the half with a 31-3 lead and they will receive the ball at the start of the second half. J.T.

imgres-3-6.jpg
The Buckeyes began the second half with a bang, just as they did to open up the game. On their first play of the game, the Buckeyes devised a plan to get Samuel more yardage and they succeeded on a one-play touchdown drive that is the longest pass downfield of the season. It was well worth it as he beat the man to man coverage and the safety that was assigned to guard him on a well thought out play action pass that literally froze the defense in place and before they realized what was about to happen, it was too late as Samuel blew past the safety for the easy score. The Silver Bullets picked up where they left off as they shut down the new quarterback after just three plays, forcing another punt. Mike Weber came out determined to surpass the 100-yard mark as he ripped off another long run, but he seemed to have sustained an injury after being tackled onto his bum shoulder. J.T. Barrett finished the drive with another touchdown on a comeback route to Noah Brown. Tommy Armstrong Jr returned from the hospital during the drive and with some great news and no major injuries. He came in with some urgency as he looks to return to his teammates to hopefully give them a boost and some sorely needed energy. The crowd gave Armstrong a warm welcome as he returned to his teammates. A true showing of respect and sportsmanship. It seems as if Dontre Wilson’s punt returning duties were revoked as both Curtis Samuel and Demario McCall have taken punts for the Buckeyes. Dontre Wilson is good at returning punts, but he likes to gamble way too much and I feel like it is a smart move for the coaching staff moving forward because, after this game, they play at Maryland and at East Lansing before playing the last game at home against TTUN. This game has been fun and unexpected, but it’ll build momentum and confidence in the team as a whole.

imgres-4-6.jpg
The Scarlet Curtain has struck again on another tipped pass for a score as Malik Hooker brought it back to the house on pure instincts, avoiding the entire Nebraska Offense and practically untouched. He took it 48-yards for The Silver Bullets’ sixth defensive score of the season. The pick-six was the last play for Ohio State after three quarters. With a 55-3 lead, I Coach Meyer will give the younger players a chance to add to what has been an impressive game for the older players. Hopefully, we get a glimpse of the future of the next generation of Buckeyes. The defense made another stop well within their red zone as they stopped Westerkamp from converting a fourth down. He avoided Craig Fada, a reserve Linebacker, but couldn’t break the tackle of the safeties that had converged on him.

imgres-5-5.jpg
As predicted, the reserves went out and it didn’t take long for Joe Burrow to cap off another offensive possession with a score. Burrow deceived the Nebraska Linebacker as he rushed for 12-yards for another Buckeye touchdown as he put seven more points on the scoreboard. The playcalling prior to the score was focused on two offensive playmakers, K.J. Hill at Wide Receiver and Demario McCall at Running Back. They are developing into quite the playmakers and after the close call with Weber, Coach Alford wants to see what the true freshman can do during garbage time. The Buckeyes finished the game 62-3, a resounding win against another Top-10 team. Here is a telling statistic, today, the Buckeyes scored on 8 of their 9 offensive possessions. The lone stop was when Burrow and the backups bled the clock. They had two interceptions for scores which extend their school record to six for the year. This game was something to revel in, but they will travel to Maryland next week, but for now they will enjoy this victory. The crowd was into it the entire game and they made so much noise it shook the cameras in the stadium. Homefield advantage was finally what it should be and hope it shows up again during the clash with TTUN. Another note worth mentioning, this game had a many blue-chippers present in the game and with this showing, I feel like the Buckeyes took full advantage of it. The atmosphere was lively and loud, they introduced another alternate uniform combination and both the offense and defense lived up to the expectations for this game, putting up 62 points and holding Nebraska to just 3. A stellar performance that could seep into the minds of the blue-chip recruits that were present, especially Shaun Wade, who is mentioned as the recruit that might get away from Coach Meyer. We will have to see what recruiting news unfolds after the recruits take it all in. Great win. Go Bucks.

Feel the excitement.

The Big Ten and their TV partners announced early Sunday morning that next weekend’s Ohio State game in the Washington D.C. area will be a 3:30 p.m. kickoff on ESPN.

Maryland, under first year head coach (and former Michigan defensive coordinator) D.J. Durkin, has limped to a 5-4 record. With Rutgers bookending the Terps’ 2016 slate, bowl eligibility is still well within their grasp, even with hosting Urban Meyer and the Bucks and a road trip to Nebraska the following weekend looming. With tons of OSU alums based in the D.C.-Maryland-Virginia area expected in attendance at Maryland Stadium, however, the Terrapins should be particularly motivated.

The last time the two teams met just north of our nation’s capital, the Bucks would shake off an inconsistent start en route to a 52-24 victory over Maryland and then head coach Randy Edsall. In addition to having coached with Jim Harbaugh during his first season at Michigan, Durkin was also a former assistant under Urban Meyer at Florida.

The Bucks return to early-season form in a dominant win over the Cornhuskers.

In perhaps the team’s best performance of the season, the No. 6 Ohio State Buckeyes (8-1, 5-1) dominated the No. 10 Nebraska Cornhuskers (7-2, 4-2) to win 62-3 at Ohio Stadium on Saturday night. Both sides of the ball turned in impressive performances for the Buckeyes as the Ohio State offense put up 590 yards of total offense, compared to the 204 from the Huskers.

Ohio State quarterback J.T. Barrett had one of his most impressive passing performances of the season, throwing for 290 yards on 26 for 38 passing and four touchdowns through the air, before exiting late in the third quarter. On the whole, nine receivers caught passes for OSU, including three for wide receiver Corey Smith who has missed substantial time this season with a wrist injury.

Despite the on-field success for OSU, the game took a frightening turn late in the second quarter when Nebraska senior quarterback Tommy Armstrong Jr. was knocked out of bounds by Malik Hooker after a third down conversion. As he fell, Armstrong hit his head on the ground, and according to Nebraska’s sports information department, was briefly unconscious. After being attended to by both teams’ medical personnel, the quarterback was taken by ambulance to the nearby Ohio State Medical Center. After being checked out, doctors told head coach Mike Riley that there did not appear to be any damage to the QBs spine, and the senior returned to Ohio Stadium in the second half, thankfully looking strong and healthy.

Unfortunately for the Nebraska faithful that made the trip to Columbus, Armstrong’s return to the stadium was one of the few bright moments on the night. After receiving the opening kick-off, on third-down, Armstrong’s first pass was deflected by OSU middle linebacker Raekwon McMillan and picked off by safety Damon Webb, who returned it 36 yards for the Buckeyes’ fifth pick-six of the season; setting a new school record... for the time being.

Nebraska converted four third-downs on the subsequent drive; the first on a pass interference, and the second on a pass deflected by wide receiver Jordan Westerkamp and caught by fellow WR Stanley Morgan, Jr. for a 26 yard gain. However, after running six plays inside the red-zone, the Buckeye defense stiffened up and held the Cornhuskers to a field goal, cutting the lead to 7-3.

Despite leaving last week’s game against Northwestern with an ankle injury, Parris Campbell took the ensuing kick-off to the 40, setting up the offense with great field position in their first possession of the game.

From there, the Buckeye play-calling seemed focused on getting H-back Curtis Samuel involved early with a nine-yard reception and a 16-yard end-around on the first two plays from scrimmage. After a holding call, a delay of game, and a drop by tight-end Marcus Baugh, quarterback J.T. Barrett completed a 22-yard pass to Dontre Wilson on 3rd and 20. A few plays later, again on third down, Barrett scrambled to his left to complete a seven-yard TD pass to Terry McLaurin to push the Buckeyes up 14-3.

On the next NU drive, Armstrong completed a 32-yard pass to Westerkamp to give the quarterback the school record in total offense, but after Marshon Lattimore knocked away a deep third-down pass to Morgan, the Cornhuskers were forced to punt, and Ohio State took over at their own 17.

The drive saw a concerted effort to get Samuel the ball, including on a direct snap for 11 yards. From right around midfield, Barrett under-threw a wide open Samuel inside the five, but because the receiver had to come back to the ball, Nebraska was flagged for pass interference. Two plays later from the 22, freshman running back Mike Weber gathered a head of steam and broke through a series of arm tackles to reach paydirt, putting the Buckeyes up 21-7 early in the second quarter.

After a block in the back on the subsequent kickoff pinned Nebraska inside their own five, the defense forced a shanked punt, so the Buckeyes began their next possession from the 32.

Freshman WR Binjimen Victor couldn’t corral a third-down TD pass, and the drive resulted in a 28-yard Tyler Durbin FG to extend the lead to 24-3, but the drive was marked by missed opportunities in the passing game. Barrett overthrew two wide-open receivers that would have resulted in touchdowns, making the total at least four poorly thrown balls that could have resulted in big gains for the Buckeyes in the first half.

After holding the Huskers to a three-and-out, Wilson again mishandled a punt that was recovered by Nebraska’s Luke McNitt. Three plays later on a third-and-seven, Armstrong kept the ball and bounced outside for a first down, but after being knocked out of bounds, his head bounced on the turf, leaving the quarterback motionless for a few minutes. The Nebraska and Ohio State medical staffs cautiously put a brace on Armstrong’s neck and placed him on a board to get him off the field and to the hospital. Before he was taken off the field, the senior could be seen opening his eyes, speaking, and eventually giving a thumbs up to an obviously concerned crowd. Fortunately, the medical attention appear to have been taken in an abundance of caution, as Armstrong spent most of the second half on the sideline talking to his teammates.

Senior quarterback Ryker Fyfe came in to replace Armstrong, completing his first pass, but on 4th-and-1, he was unable to get a pass around Tyquan Lewis. He was forced to throw it away, resulting in a turnover on downs.

On the next drive, Barrett held onto the ball on 3rd-and-9, picking up 20 to the 36; on a pass-heavy drive, Samuel caught four balls for 37 yards. On first and goal with seven seconds remaining in the first half and a 24-3 lead, Barrett took the snap and ran one yard towards the line and pulled the old Tim Tebow jump-pass to Samuel to end the half with a 31-3 lead.

After overthrowing multiple potential touchdowns in the first half, on the first play from scrimmage after halftime, Barrett delivered a near perfect play-action pass to Samuel for a 75-yard TD. Samuel blew by his defender early in the route, and then broke a tackle for his second touchdown catch in as many offensive plays.

Nebraska was held to a three-and-out on their next possession. The Buckeyes threw on six of nine plays on the next drive, resulting in a six-yard TD pass to WR Noah Brown, moving the score to 45-3. The drive also saw an impressive reception (15 yards) and run (24 yards) from Weber. Throughout the entire game, Weber showed a strength and toughness that looked beyond his freshman status. He routinely took on would-be tacklers to pick up extra yards, beginning to work himself into the bruising mold of other recent Ohio State running backs. However, after the 24-yard run, Weber apparently hurt his shoulder, and with the game out of hand, he did not return. He finished the day with 72 rushing yards on 11 carries, and the 15-yard reception.

Following Durbin’s second FG of the game, OSU cornerback Denzel Ward deflected a Fyfe pass that was collected by Hooker who weaved his way in and out of traffic for an impressively athletic 48-yard interception return for a touchdown; his second, and the team’s sixth, of the season.

On the next drive, despite picking up 63 yards on 10 plays, Nebraska came up a yard short on 4th-and-8 at Ohio State’s two yard line. On the next drive, back-up Joe Burrow took over the quarterbacking responsibilities with 12:34 left in the game. The QB went 6/6 for 62 yards and looked incredibly sharp guiding the offense in mop-up duty.

Freshmen running back Demario McCall and receiver K.J. Hill (five catches for 66 yards) had impressive performances after the game was out of reach. In fact, McCall finished the game with 73 yards rushing to lead the team.

On the first drive of the fourth quarter, they both made the most of the opportunity, picking up good yardage, but it was Burrow who took the ball into the endzone on a 12-yard keeper to move the score to 62-3 with 7:19 to go. The score proved to be the final one of the game, marking Nebraska’s second worse loss in history, following a 70-10 defeat at the hands of Texas Tech in 2010.

3 things we learned:

1) Ohio State’s offense is still capable of making plays

Since demolishing Rutgers on the first day of October, the Ohio State offense has seemed to be a shell of its early-season self; or for a more apt analogy, it often felt as if it had crawled back into its shell. For weeks, OSU opponents had been bludgeoned by heavy doses of zone reads and short passes.

Against Nebraska, while not everything was successful, the Buckeyes infused a bit more creativity into the playcalling; from downfield (however often overthrown) passes, to multiple end-arounds, to shovel passes, to a jump pass. Coming into the game, Nebraska had the nation’s 15th best scoring defense, allowing only 18.4 points per game, but through a renewed aggressiveness and creativity, the Buckeyes put up 62 points, their second highest total of the season.

While Ed Warinner and Tim Beck’s play-calling helped, much of the credit can be given to the offensive line, which looked incredibly stout against the Huskers. While the unit has received a fair amount of criticism in recent weeks, they dominated the line of scrimmage giving Barrett plenty of time in the pocket, and creating holes for running backs. If the Buckeyes hope to run the table and make the College Football Playoff for the second time in three years, the offensive productivity is going to have to look much more like this than the outputs against Indiana, Wisconsin, Penn State, and Northwestern

2) Curtis Samuel is a virtually unstoppable offensive weapon

While he’s not exactly at Bo Jackson in Tecmo Bowl levels, the H-back was lights out against Nebraska. He accounted for 178 yards from scrimmage (41 rushing, 137 receiving) and two touchdowns, which played a huge role in the offensives resurgence mentioned above.

What’s more is that the offensive coaching staff found different ways to get him the ball. Yes, he got it on a few zone reads, but he also saw a direct snap and end arounds, but he also was targeting running routes on numerous branches of the passing tree.

Armchair play-callers have been longing for Samuel to be more involved in the offense for weeks; apparently Meyer and company have finally figured out away to make that happen.

3) Ohio State’s defense is in fact amongst the elites in the country

While giving up 21 points per game over the past month has felt like a frustrating disappointment for many fans, the Buckeyes still ranked sixth in the country in scoring defense (15.1 ppg) coming into the matchup against Nebraska.

Against the Huskers, the defense seemingly returned to their early-season dominance. The OSU front-four was able to pressure the NU quarterbacks into hurried throws without much of a blitzing presence, and the secondary, which had been much maligned in recent weeks, turned in an outstanding effort. In addition to the two picks by Webb and Hooker, the DBs came up with multiple pass breakups on key third downs to end drives.

Both because of a ferocious OSU front and a rapidly escalating deficit, the Huskers more or less abandoned the run, rushing for only 78 yards. Like the offense, if this is a sign of things to come down the homestretch and into the postseason, the future is looking much more bright for the Buckeyes than it was 24 hours ago.
