On the heels of Heritage Minister Melanie Joly’s announcement that the federal government had nixed the idea of holding an outdoor game in December of 2017 on Parliament Hill, Ottawa mayor Jim Watson met with the Ottawa Senators yesterday to articulate the importance of hosting a game in 2017 to commemorate a number of anniversaries.

The importance of a game obviously wouldn’t be lost on Eugene Melnyk or the Senators organization, but after the Parliament Hill proposal fell through, rumours of the Melnyk’s reluctance to use OSEG’s TD Place as a venue began circulating and Watson addressed those rumblings in an interview that he had today with the hosts of TSN 1200’s ‘TGOR’.

To listen to the full interview, you can use the embedded media player at the bottom of this post, but Watson’s comments have been transcribed below.

As always, my thoughts are in bold.

On whether his meeting regarding Ottawa hosting an outdoor game happened yesterday…

“It did, yes. It was yesterday afternoon and you’re quite right, we had to cut it a little short because of the challenge we had in the tunnel with the three workers and I was on site there. So we did have the meeting with Eugene Melnyk here at City Hall and I thought it was a very positive meeting. I laid out my vision for 2017 and all the work that we’ve been doing to attract a lot of really great events – the Grey Cup, the Canadian Figure Skating Championships, the Roar of the Rings and literally dozens of other events. And I’ve said, we’ve always maintained that we wanted to get three really big events: the Juno Awards – which we’ve now secured; the Grey Cup – which we’ve secured; and an Outdoor Classic. As you know, we worked very closely with the federal government because the ideal site obviously, the most iconic site to have an Outdoor Classic would be on Parliament Hill with the Peace Tower in the background. I’m not going to criticize or dump on the feds. They had some legitimate concerns from security to logistics to costs to the time that it would take to put 30,000 seats on the front lawn and so that decision was made about a week or so ago and conveyed publicly and to me. My view is that as Mayor, it’s my job to try to make sure that we have a game outdoors because as you both know, and many of your listeners know, Ottawa was the place where the very first NHL game took place in December of 1917 between the Canadiens and the Senators. And that’s why I’ve almost been obsessed with working to try and get an Outdoor Classic to end our 2017 celebration with such a significant anniversary – the 100th anniversary of the first NHL game in Ottawa, the 125th anniversary of Lord Stanley giving the (Stanley Cup), the 150th anniversary of confederation, the 50th anniversary of the (Ottawa) 67’s and the 25th anniversary of the Ottawa Senators. So when the (Parliament) Hill option was closed, I thought the most realistic and logical idea would be to have it at TD Place because the extra seats are already going to be up for the Grey Cup. We just keep them up a little bit longer. We have all of the amenities, restaurants, liquor licences, the Aberdeen Pavilion was where the Senators won one of their Stanley Cups in the 1920’s, it’s right beside the world heritage Rideau Canal, we have a transportation plan in place and that was my pitch to Eugene Melnyk and his colleague. And I came back from that meeting cautiously optimistic that I think I laid out exactly why we would like to have the game and Mr. Melnyk is going to give some thought to that and get back to us as soon as possible.”

Logistically, a game on Parliament Hill was always considered a longshot because of the timelines and circumstances involved. Whether those concerns could ever be overcome for the Senators to host a game there in the future remains to be seen, but realistically, it always felt like TD Place was the natural choice for where a prospective outdoor game would be held.

Now obviously it is a bit of a letdown knowing that the pipe dream scenario was dead in the water, but it’s hard to imagine that the Senators would let the opportunity to host an outdoor game in 2017 go by the wayside simply because their iconic idea didn’t unfold the way they wanted.

Then again, that Mayor Watson even felt it was necessary to meet with Melnyk and outline the importance of hosting an outdoor game in 2017 and play up using an alternative site like TD Place is pretty incredible.

Keep in mind, after the organization was spurned by the respective levels of government when it sought City support for an MLS stadium and the construction of a casino on property adjacent to the Canadian Tire Centre, Senators president Cyril Leeder stepped down from several economic development roles connected to the City of Ottawa in 2013.

On what the issue is for the Senators being hesitant to use TD Place and whether it’s an issue of the two sides not liking one another…

“No, I think there’s probably perhaps a little bit of rivalry because they are competitors, to be honest. TD Place is trying to attract concerts and big events for their venue and so is the Canadian Tire Centre. But, I think Eugene (Melnyk) recognizes that this is a decision that he can make and that the owner of the Montreal Canadiens can make. It’s not a league decision. I spoke with the commissioner Gary Bettman, I guess, two weeks ago and he said, ‘At the end of the day, you need the two owners agree.’ I think it’s a big decision. I think he was disappointed and a lot of people were that it wasn’t going to be on (Parliament) Hill and he didn’t want to just have another run of the mill stadium game. But, my pitch to him is that this is a once in a lifetime opportunity to celebrate the 100th anniversary, the centennial (anniversary), of the very first NHL game that took place in our own city back in December of 1917. As politicians like to say, I was cautiously optimistic that my message got through and Eugene was gracious with his time. We talked a lot about the franchise and the team and so on. I think he understands how important this is to the citizens of Ottawa to have this kind of outdoor game.”

Okay, I was hoping that the hesitancy to use TD Place would be more of a league decision in the sense that they’d be hesitant to award an outdoor game simply because it lacks the kind of flair that an iconic Parliament Hill game would generate, but if Watson’s right and it’s simply a matter of the two respective NHL owners reaching an agreement on hosting a game, what’s the problem here?

The Senators already do an incredible amount of work within the community and the organization should be commended for its charity work, the programs it funds and the initiatives it takes part in.

Keeping that in mind, it feels weird knowing that the organization could balk at hosting an outdoor game simply because their initial grandiose plan fell through or because they’re unwilling to cooperate with OSEG.

On whether he would characterize Eugene Melnyk’s reluctance to host this game on how the revenues from such a game would be split or whether the reluctance is attributed to it being held at a less iconic venue …

“Well as I understand it, basically the league takes the revenue for outdoor games. So it’s not a money-maker for the Senators from that perspective. They obviously, if the game was held at the Canadian Tire Centre, they would reap the benefits from parking and concessions, I assume. Whereas at Lansdowne, depending on what agreement is reached, you would assume that Lansdowne and OSEG would keep the revenue from concessions and from the parking, but the Sens would probably… obviously… and the league more importantly would keep the revenue from advertising and ticket sales. And ticket sales would be several million dollars because you’re looking at a fairly high price. But I think the other thing is, having this as part of a package, I think will help season ticket sales for next year as well. If you can market and advertise the fact that you’re going to get an Outdoor Classic – which is the 100th anniversary of the first NHL game in the history of the world that took place right in our backyard – that’s a pretty strong selling point too. Eugene said all along and his people said all along, they focused entirely on (Parliament) Hill because they didn’t want to take their eye off that ball because they felt (Parliament) Hill would be international (news) all over the world and I agree with that. There’s never been an NHL game played in a venue like Parliament Hill, so there’s no question that there’s disappointment on that. But, we can’t reverse the hands of time. The government’s made that decision. My ultimate goal is to make sure we don’t lose the real opportunity to have that outdoor game between the Habs and Senators in December, 2017.”

I’ll come back to the point about the league taking revenue from the game, but again, for Watson to believe that it’s necessary to play up the importance of hosting this game in 2017 is pretty incredible.

On TD Place being a much easier location to hold the game…

“The infrastructure is there. Everything from locker rooms to the issue of selling alcohol on the front lawn of Parliament Hill and so on – there were a lot of obstacles (to put a game on Parliament Hill) and to be fair to the federal government and to both the NHL and the Senators, they went into these negotiations with a lot of good will. They didn’t string them along, but there are a lot of people in charge of Parliament Hill and I’ve always said, ‘It’s one of these areas (where) everyone is in charge, but no one is in charge.’ You have the Speaker of the House, the Speaker of the Senate, RCMP, there’s a committee for the use of Parliament Hill, there’s the Department of Canadian Heritage and the Department of Public Works. We had an event there to welcome this conference ‘One Young World’ and it took us a long time to get permission to get a stage and the Prime Minister was even coming and it took a while. So, to put up 30,000 seats or 25,000 seats and to build the infrastructure that would be required and the security, I think they just felt that it was just not feasible. That’s why I’ve pivoted, if you will, to ‘Let’s see what we can do about TD Place’ because as you’ve pointed out, it’s got the infrastructure in place already – everything from dressing rooms to concessions to liquor licenses. You could have a great fan fair at the Aberdeen Pavilion. If the weather was right, I could see people skating to the game from downtown or from other parts of the (Rideau) Canal, so it would be pretty exciting to have it there.”

Skating on the Canal in December? That may be more ambitious than hosting a game on Parliament Hill.

On whether there are challenges to hosting it at TD Place and who pays for the game to happen…

“That would be the NHL. They have the rink and the expertise. Eugene and I were talking about when (the NHL) takes on a project like this, it’s done so well and so professionally, it’s really top drawer. I’ve met with the commissioner a couple of times and he certainly knows – I think he’s probably tired of having me speak to him about this – but he knows how important this is to the city to get this game. There was a lot of excitement when it was announced that we were looking at attracting an NHL outdoor game. I don’t think the novelty’s worn off. I think the very fact that it’s never been held here and we also have that historical note of the first game. I could see the Canadiens coming in old school jerseys taking the train up from Montreal and turning it into a real event and not just (emphasizing) the game but the week leading up to it.”

Based off what Watson is saying, an outdoor game means:

  • The league takes the revenue generated from the game
  • The league also pays for the associated costs to put it on
  • The game would take place simply if the respective owners of the Canadiens and Senators can reach an agreement
  • The citizens of Ottawa and fans of both franchises would benefit greatly

If the league takes the revenue and pays for the associated costs, what’s the hold up?

This shouldn’t be a hard sell where the Mayor feels it necessary to meet with Melnyk because he’s worried about this opportunity being lost.

Just fucking get it done.

On if the TD Place option falls through and whether an alternative location like LeBreton Flats could be used and what kind of drop dead date is there to reach an agreement on hosting a game…

“Well, I think we’ve all agreed and the league as well that we have to have a final decision and a deal signed by at the latest mid-January and that’s really at the latest. In terms of LeBreton Flats, I think you run into the same cost problems with respect to (Parliament) Hill. You were looking at a significant amount of money to put bleachers, temporary bleachers, up on (Parliament) Hill. I don’t think LeBreton is that realistic of an option. It’s an open field, which is great, but if you know Bluesfest, they have stages and really that’s it. There’s no seating. Everyone sits on the ground or brings a lawn chair, so I think Lansdowne makes the most sense.”

Hey, the Senators have a history for finding homes where open fields used to be.

LGHL Jerome Baker almost played his college football career at Florida, instead of Ohio State

It took a couple things to fall the Buckeyes way to keep Baker within state lines.

“A few hours after Baker committed to Florida, a story appeared on Sports Illustrated's page with the headline: "I'm coming home." That was James' official announcement that he was ending his four-year stretch with the Miami Heat and returning to the Cleveland Cavaliers.”

– Ari Wasserman, cleveland.com

Following your heroes is something commonly done. When the person you look up to comes from the your home state and makes a decision to go somewhere else to play a sport, you might just do it as well.

In the case of Buckeye Jerome Baker, his football commitment began with him tentatively being part of the Florida Gators. However, when LeBron James made the decision to make the trek out of Miami and go back to the Buckeye State, a growing sense of winning a title in the home state began to hold a special value - compared to being a transplant and winning a title in a place you can’t call home.

Wasserman’s article goes into the full picture of how Baker flipped from being a Gator to a Buckeye. From the OSU coaching staff’s persuasion of staying in Ohio, to the reshuffling of the coaching staff at Florida, there were a lot of things that helped the Buckeyes keep one of the top talents in Ohio within state lines.

“He is also on the cusp of setting a school single season record, which is held by Tom Tupa (47.1 average in 1984) and he is just one-tenth of a yard behind Andy Groom’s career punting average record of 45.0 yards set from 2001-02. Johnston’s career average is 44.9.”

– Ohio State spokesperson, ohiostatebuckeyes.com

We haven’t seen him that much on the gridiron this season, but when punter Cameron Johnston kicks the ball, he generally sends it to oblivion. So far in the 2016 campaign, Johnson is averaging a 47.5 per punt – good enough for fourth best in college football. That punt average is a big reason why the Aussie has been named as a semifinalist for the Ray Guy Award.

Johnston is familiar with making the semifinalist list for this award; it’s the third consecutive year he’s made it this far. If Johnston keeps punting like he is, then he will be on pace to beat the Ohio State record for longest punt average in a season. Tom Tumpa currently has that honor with an astounding 47.1 yard average, which has stood since 1984.

Johnston isn’t the only Buckeyes making an award semifinalist list. Raekwon McMillan is up as a semifinalist for the Lott IMPACT Award. As the award suggest, it's earned by the player that has the most impact for their team both on and off the field.

As the season closes, we’ll keep you updated if other Buckeyes can bring home individual hardware as well.

“Matta may not have the nation’s second-ranked recruiting class to rely on, as he did 10 years ago, but for the first time in a few years, there is plenty of cause for hope around Ohio State basketball.”

– Ben Axelrod, landof10.com

Transitioning from the football season, Buckeye basketball officially tips off Friday night against Navy. After the NIT trip last season - which ended with a loss to the Florida Gators - the Buckeyes are primed to hit the ground running and get back into playing shooty into late March.

However, the hype surrounding the Matta regime isn't nearly what it was a decade ago. Long are the times of Daequan Cook, Greg Oden and the cast that reached the Final Four - which also ended with a loss to the Florida Gators.

Even after the Buckeyes basically rebuilt themselves after the mass exodus at the end of last season, a new season brings a new hope. JaQuan Lyle and Jae’sean Tate put in the work in the offseason, and are looked as the potential stars to help blossom this squad into an NCAA tournament contender.

Friday night is when we’ll see how this new look Buckeye team performs, and what hype this squad can corral going into conference play. Ohio State-Navy will be on at 9 p.m. on the CBS Sports Network.

Men's Basketball Buckeye Tidbits 2006-2007 Season

10 years later: An oral history of the 2006-07 Ohio State men's basketball team

Before season that led to national championship game, 'there was definitely a buzz,' players say

osu-10-years.jpg

It’s been a full decade since Greg Oden, Mike Conley and the “Thad Five” helped power Ohio State to its first appearance in the national championship game since 1960. With the most high-profile recruiting class in program history and a mix of key veterans, the Buckeyes would finish 35-4 and lose to Florida, 84-75, in the title game held inside Atlanta’s Georgia Dome.

To commemorate that season, The Dispatch is launching a season-long feature. Key periods or games will be recalled in online-only oral histories, allowing members of the 2006-07 Ohio State men’s basketball team to take you through the year as they saw it unfold.

With this year’s team set to open the season tonight at Navy, the first installment of the series details what the weeks and months leading up to the season opener against VMI were like.

Another step forward can affirm the Buckeyes as legit title contenders.

After a month of inconsistent play, the Ohio State Buckeyes opened the most important month of a season with a bang, destroying Nebraska by 59 points, and showing their high potential in the process.

For the first time since Oklahoma, (Rutgers doesn’t count as a real team, obviously) the Buckeyes played a complete game, receiving major contributions in both phases offensively, while the defense dominated from the get-go. It couldn’t have come at a better time, what with a highly anticipated game with Michigan looming, and their playoff hopes still very much alive.

As they head to College Park for a showdown with the Maryland Terrapins, Ohio State has an excellent chance to build on that consistency and head into the final stretch of the regular season on a roll, much like other Urban Meyer-coached teams have in the past.

With that in mind, here are five things to watch for as Ohio State takes on Maryland:

Code red

In recent years, Maryland hasn’t been shy when it comes to wild uniform designs, but Saturday’s look may take the cake, at least in terms of sheer color:

RED ALERT we have #RedOps!

See them Saturday! #ProtectThisHouse #IWILL #TeamUA pic.twitter.com/43o8ALGdlI

— Maryland Terrapins (@umterps) November 7, 2016

Dubbed ‘Red Ops,’ the Terps are going all red everything in a look said to be “Inspired by the engineering in reinforced concrete.” Buy that company line if you want, but the rest of us know what’s really going on here:

image_mountaindewcodered1.jpg

It’s debatable whether consuming Mountain Dew Code Red or Maryland football is worse for your health, but what isn’t is that these uniforms are gloriously hideous, and I can’t wait to see them in action. Also, please remember these the next time Ohio State chooses to wear an alternate uniform, and thank Gene Smith for having a good relationship with Nike.

Daylight

To put it bluntly, the Maryland run defense is bad. Since holding Purdue to 10 yards on 27 carries to open conference play, the Terps have given up an average of 6.2 yards per carry, 311 yards rushing, and 3.6 rushing touchdowns per game. As if those raw numbers weren’t enough, a deeper dive illuminates just exactly how bad it’s been, and why the Ohio State ground game should cruise on Saturday.

The Terps enter Saturday as the nation’s second worst run defense (127th in Rushing S&P+), are inefficient (117th in Rushing Success Rate), get demolished at the point of attack (128th in Adjusted Line Yards), and rarely find themselves in opposing backfields (92nd in stuff rate). 350 rushing yards for an Ohio State ground game that ranks in the top three nationally in every one of those categories probably isn’t out of the question on Saturday.

The Buckeyes still struggle to generate long runs at a high clip (81st in Rushing IsoPPP), but should churn out 5-7 yard carries with regularity. Ohio State has made a point the last few weeks to improve it’s passing game, but this defense is too bad against the run to not just bludgeon until they can stop it. Expect lots of Mike Weber, Curtis Samuel, and Demario McCall, en route to what should be a huge day on the ground.

New Blood

Speaking of McCall, the shifty playmaker from North Ridgeville, Ohio, looks to have found a role in the offense after gaining 73 yards on 16 carries against Nebraska. Granted, most of those numbers were in garbage time, but McCall showed the big play ability —and elusiveness— Ohio State has lacked, outside of Curtis Samuel. His emergence, as well as the rise of a K.J. Hill, could mean a new level for the offense going forward.

After sitting out two games with a high ankle sprain, freshman wide receiver K.J. Hill has provided a spark for the passing game in recent weeks. Hill had a crucial 34 yard catch-and-run late against Northwestern, and followed that up with the best game of his young career, catching five passes for 66 yards last week. While Noah Brown appears to be J.T. Barrett’s favorite efficiency target, Hill looks to be the big play threat out wide that’s been missing from the offense for a season and a half. Receiver play has been an issue all years, but a healthy Hill may end up being the best of the bunch.

The emergence of both won’t stop the usual suspects from getting the ball this week, but it’ll be interesting to see if the staff finally trusts them enough to involve them early on, rather than in garbage time. Each has flashed the ability to provide big plays, and could be the keys to the Buckeyes reaching their potential ceiling on offense.

Old Blood

Players like McCall and Hill are still looking to find their way, but linebacker Raekwon McMillan is almost done leaving his brilliant mark on the program. His overall numbers may be down this year, but McMillan remains the heart of the defense that appears to be rounding into one of the nation’s best:

“The No. 1 thing is he’s not selfish,” defensive coordinator Luke Fickell said. “He understands the true meaning of leadership. Leaders make others around them better, and sometimes that means not focusing on yourself and not worrying about the stats and those things. We all want them, they all look at them, but the reality is, you don’t let that shape how you go about your business because it can bring you down sometimes.

Outside of maybe Tyquan Lewis, McMillan was the only sure thing the defense had coming into the season, and has still been a force despite offenses scheming around him, especially in the running game. Even with the extra attention from blockers, he still ranks third on the team in tackles, and has adjusted by destroying opposing passing games.

McMillan has batted passes that directly led to interceptions the past two weeks, and in the case of the Nebraska game, resulted in a pick six that set the tone for the rest of the night. The mark of a great player is being able to find ways to make plays, even when the opponent is trying to limit you, and McMillan has done that to perfection this season.

While the defense is on the field Saturday, take some time watch one of the best linebackers in program history do his thing, and appreciate how much he means to not only the defense, but the program in general.

Taking Shape

Lost amid the angst over the offense’s play in October was the regression from the defense. After starting the season with one of the stingiest groups in the country, the Buckeyes fell off in October:

Defensive_percentile.png

Wisconsin, Penn State, and Northwestern kept them off balance in different ways, and their struggles were just as responsible for the Buckeyes’ October lull as the playcalling, passing game, and blocking were. If the Nebraska game was any indication, though, they may be hitting their peak at the right time.

Even accounting for Tommy Armstrong’s early exit, the Silver Bullets were dominant, holding the Cornhuskers to their lowest yards per play output (3.5) since 2014, while returning two interceptions for touchdowns. It was arguably the best they’ve played all season, and a reminder that the defense ultimately holds the key to how far this team will go.

This particular Ohio State team is at their best when the defense sets the tone, much like they did against Nebraska, and to a lesser extent, Oklahoma. In those games, the Buckeyes stuffed the run on standard downs, then leaned on one of the best secondaries in the country to smother receivers and make plays on passing downs.

It’s a recipe that led to early confidence, good field position for the offense, and even a few points for the defense, themselves. While Maryland’s offense isn’t anything special (58th in Offensive S&P+), the Terps have an excellent ground game, and should test the Buckeyes ability to stick to that winning formula.

If Ohio State is able to limit big plays on the ground, the secondary could be in for a big day, leading to another step in the right direction for the defense overall. It’s definitely OK to still want to see improvement from the offense, but if the defense is able to repeat last week’s performance, it’ll be a good indicator that this teams’ championship aspirations are very real heading into the final two weeks of the regular season.

Ohio State women’s basketball got the new season started in style, blowing out Duquesne, 89-69

The Ohio State women’s basketball team took care of business in its season opener against Duquesne on Friday afternoon in Columbus. The Buckeyes used their signature relentless full-court defense and dominated the paint to bury the Dukes 89-69.

The new look rotation for head coach Kevin McGuff’s squad was on full display as ten different players saw minutes. Junior All-American Kelsey Mitchell overcame a mediocre shooting performance of 6-for-17 to score 18 points, while North Carolina transfer Stephanie Mavunga added a double-double with 15 points and 14 rebounds.

Sierra Calhoun and Shayla Cooper were also in double figures for Ohio State in game in which the team’s size advantage played dividends. The Buckeyes outrebounded Duquense 55-33.

The Buckeyes used a 17-4 run spanning the end of the first quarter and beginning of the second to race out to a 16-point lead that they would never look back from. During the run, Ohio State beat up the Dukes on the interior, getting a pair of layups from Cooper, and easy buckets from Kiara Lewis, Tori McCoy, and Mavunga.

Calhoun led an 8-2 run to end the first half, knocking down a jumper and a pair of free throws to give the Buckeyes a 46-26 advantage at the half. Mavunga led the team with nine points in the first 20 minutes thanks to 5-for-6 shooting from the free throw line, and added a team-high eight rebounds.

Mitchell got off to a sluggish start shooting the ball, going 2-for-7 from the field and uncharacteristically missing three of her five free throw attempts. She saw consistent double teams and finished the half with seven points, and also contributed two rebounds and two assists.

Duquesne’s Amadea Szamosi led all scorers with 11 points, and also hauled in a team-high five rebounds. No other member of the Dukes made more than two field goals, as they shot a frigid 30.6 percent from the floor.

In the third quarter, Ohio State scored nine quick points before going ice cold. A three-minute scoring drought allowed Duquesne to go on a 12-2 run and cut the lead to 57-41. Baskets from Mavunga and Cooper ended the Dukes’ momentum, though, and Mitchell scored four in quick succession to keep the advantage at 20, 65-45, headed to the fourth.

Two Calhoun three-pointers and a nine-point offensive outburst from Makayla Waterman in the fourth quarter capped things off for the Buckeyes, as they cruised through the final 10 minutes. Szamosi was held to just two second half points, ceding the majority of the Dukes’ offense to Chassidy Ommogrosso, who had 17, and Julijan Vojinovic, who finished with 16 thanks to 4-for-9 three-point shooting.

Next up for Ohio State is a Monday evening matchup with fourth-ranked South Carolina in Columbus. Tip-off is scheduled for 6:00 p.m. ET at St. John Arena.

The Wolverines will try and navigate their last road test before they travel to Columbus in a couple weeks.

The week’s Big Ten slate is just as ugly as the national games. I was able to find a couple decent national games to pick yesterday. If you missed them you can find them here.

Last week ATS: 4-8 (1-4 National, 3-4 B1G)

Season ATS: 59-69-3 (22-32-1 National, 37-37-2 B1G)

B1G games:

No. 10 Penn State (-7) v. Indiana - 12:00 PM EST - ABC/ESPN2

Last week Penn State continued their impressive play of late when they had little trouble taking down Iowa in State College. Running back Saquon Barkley was the workhorse in the victory, rushing for 167 yards and a touchdown, while adding a 44-yard receiving touchdown. Now the Nittany Lions will look to keep their dreams of making one of the New Year’s Six bowl games alive when they travel to Indiana.

It hasn’t exactly been pretty, but Indiana has won their last two games, and now is just a game away from bowl eligibility. The Hoosiers have had a lot of success on offense over the last two games, rolling up over 1,200 yards in the victories. Quarterback Richard Lagow threw for 394 yards and three touchdowns in the win over Rutgers last week, but also did throw two interceptions, running his total for the year to 13 picks.

I’m tempted to take the points with the Hoosiers here since it seems like Indiana gives ranked teams fits in Bloomington, but Penn State is just playing too well right now. Their offense is clicking and the Nittany Lion defense is getting healthy, which should propel them to a double-digit victory.

Penn State 41, Indiana 28

Northwestern (-14) v. Purdue - 12:00 PM EST - Big Ten Network

We all know that Purdue is bad, but more often than not it seems like they find a way to stay within the number. The Boilermakers have the kind of passing offense, with six receivers with at least 27 receptions, that allows for them to at least put up some points. Quarterback David Blough has 20 touchdowns on the year, but the downside is he has thrown 13 interceptions.

The problem with Purdue is they can’t stop anybody on defense, especially on the ground. Running back Justin Jackson is 90 yards from cracking 1,000 yards for the year, and against this Purdue defense he should have that by halftime. Northwestern hasn’t been the greatest against the pass, allowing 260 yards per game, so that could help Purdue keep things within two touchdowns.

Northwestern is coming off a couple tough games against Ohio State and Wisconsin so the Boilermakers might be catching them at the right time. I wouldn’t be surprised to see Purdue give Northwestern a little bit of a scare here.

Northwestern 31, Purdue 24

Rutgers v. Michigan State (-14) - 12:00 PM EST - Big Ten Network

With a combined 13 straight losses between these two teams, I guess somebody has to win here. Rutgers has at least been a little more competitive recently since going to Giovanni Rescigno at quarterback. Michigan State is a complete mess right now, and while they are certainly more talented, I don’t trust them laying this many points.

Michigan State 28, Rutgers 17

Rutgers v. No. 7 Wisconsin (-26) - 3:30 PM EST - ESPN2

After a stretch in which they faced Michigan, Ohio State, Iowa, Nebraska, and Northwestern, Wisconsin can breathe a little easier this week. Illinois is just a giant mess right now, so it’s hard to see them slowing down Corey Clement and the Wisconsin rushing attack. Even if Illinois is able to slow the Badgers down on offense a little bit, I have no faith they can get anything against Wisconsin’s strong defense. The Badgers win their fourth straight game.

Wisconsin 44, Illinois 14

Minnesota v. No. 19 Nebraska (-7) - 7:30 PM EST - Big Ten Network

Aside from how well Penn State is playing, Minnesota might be the biggest surprise in the Big Ten this year. The Golden Gophers have benefitted so far from a ridiculously soft conference schedule, and they’ll be tested the next three weeks against Nebraska, Northwestern, and Wisconsin. What could help them navigate these games is the veteran leadership of Mitch Leidner at quarterback, along with running back Rodney Smith, who has 913 yards and 13 touchdowns on the year.

It is still unknown if Tommy Armstrong Jr. will be able to play on Saturday after he banged his head hard on the turf at Ohio Stadium last week. If Armstrong Jr. can’t play, Ryker Fyfe will take the snaps for Nebraska. Last week Fyfe went just for 5-18 against the Buckeyes, so losing Armstrong Jr. for the game would definitely slow the Nebraska offense.

Even though they have a lot to still play for, I think Nebraska is cautious with Armstrong Jr. and the senior doesn’t end up playing. This game will end up being tight throughout, and even though I think Nebraska is the better team, I think Minnesota somehow leaves Lincoln with the victory.

Minnesota 30, Nebraska 27

No. 3 Michigan (-22) v. Iowa - 8:00 PM EST - ABC

For just the second time this season the Wolverines are leaving the state of Michigan. The only other time Michigan left the mitten they waxed Rutgers 78-0. Saturday night’s game isn’t going to be a beatdown to that extent, but it’s going to be a beatdown. Don’t overthink this. Michigan will go up big and Harbaugh will do some weird stuff late in the game that adds to the evidence that he is clinically insane.

Michigan 38, Iowa 10

No. 5 Ohio State (-29.5) v. Maryland - 3:30 PM EST - ESPN

Was Ohio State’s performance last week a sign of things to come? After some inconsistent play recently, the Buckeyes looked like the buzzsaw that many knew they were capable of being in the 62-3 victory over Nebraska on Saturday night. Curtis Samuel got plenty of touches, J.T. Barrett was much improved throwing the football, and the defense returned two interceptions for touchdowns.

Maryland has fallen on hard times recently after a 4-0 start, losing four of their last five games. Quarterback Perry Hills has a shoulder injury, and even if he plays it’s unknown how long he’ll be able to tough it out. The Terrapins offense is best when it is running the football, averaging 232 yards per game. It’s hard to see them getting much against an Ohio State defense that is allowing just 119 yards on the ground.

If Ohio State is able to jump out to a big lead early it’ll force Maryland to throw the football, something they don’t do very well. I’m a little leery of laying so many points on the road after such a big win at home, but I think last week woke up an Ohio State team that was slumbering. Barrett has a big day, as he gets the two touchdowns he needs to pass Drew Brees’ Big Ten record for most total touchdowns.

Ohio State 48, Maryland 13

Ohio State women’s basketball faces tough road in new season

The Ohio State women’s basketball team gets the 2016-17 season underway on Friday, and the road ahead won’t be easy.

Ohio State will tip-off the new season at noon on Friday at St. John Arena in Columbus against a Duquesne team that went 28-6 a season ago and fell in the second round of the NCAA tournament against eventual national champion Connecticut. It will serve as a good barometer of where the team is at, and how far it will need to go if it hopes to contend for a national championship.

Duquesne is one of the many quality teams the Buckeyes will face in the 2016-17 season. Game No. 2 will pit head coach Kevin McGuff’s squad against South Carolina, which is ranked third in the nation according to the coaches poll and fourth according to the AP. It’s the kind of schedule Ohio State hopes to emerge from battle-tested for March, much as it was last year.

The Buckeyes will also travel to Storrs in December to take on the preseason No. 1 team in the land in UConn, and will also face nationally-ranked Miami (FL) as part of the Big Ten/ACC Challenge during the non-conference portion of the schedule. The team will also take part in the Gulf Coast Showcase tournament, where a meeting with Syracuse, another top-15 team, could take place in the second round.

Once conference play gets underway, things won’t be much easier, though the schedule does do Ohio State a favor of sorts. The Buckeyes will be contending with Maryland, the preseason Big Ten favorite that is No. 5 in the coaches poll and No. 6 in the AP, as well as Indiana and Michigan State squads that each appear in one poll, and Michigan, which is just on the outside looking in at the top 25.

Where the Big Ten’s scheduling may give Ohio State an advantage, though, is that each of those four contenders show up only once, and the Maryland game will be played in Columbus. The Buckeyes will instead face Minnesota, Nebraska, and Wisconsin twice apiece as part of the unbalanced schedule.

So what does this mean for Ohio State? Given the fact the team has perhaps the best player in the country in Kelsey Mitchell and a supporting cast of veterans who have grown up on the court together and three high-profile transfer students, the tough non-conference slate and relatively light Big Ten schedule set up the Buckeyes to be a major force come March.

"I feel like we're one of the teams that have got enough talent and depth and balance that we could make a run at the national championship,” McGuff told ESPN.

While it certainly won’t be a small undertaking, the heavyweights like UConn, Notre Dame, Baylor, and South Carolina are not head and shoulders above the rest of the country this season thanks to the WNBA draft and the growing frequency of transfers. Parity, for the first time in quite some time, could be the name of the game.

And that sets Ohio State up as a serious contender. The Buckeyes have offensive firepower, true depth for the first time in McGuff’s tenure, and a road through the conference that appears on paper to be utterly navigable. The season is here, the speculation ends, and the question of whether the program’s first Final Four berth since 1993 can be attained will begin to be answered on Friday.

The Buckeyes open their season in a rare, true road game in Annapolis.

The Ohio State Buckeyes men’s basketball team is ready to bury the memories of last season as they prepare to open up their 2016-17 campaign today versus the Navy Midshipmen in Annapolis. The game is part of the Veterans Classic, played on Veterans Day for the last three years. This matchup is just the second all-time meeting between the two schools, with Navy having defeated Ohio State in 1932, 35-32. That’s a basketball score, we promise.

The last season was rough by any stretch due to a combination of a tough schedule, youth and inexperience and injuries at key points in the season. It ultimately ended in an anticlimactic fashion, with the Buckeyes losing to Florida in the second round of the NIT by a score of 74-66. Then three of the four remaining true freshmen on the team left for other programs at the conclusion of the season. With anemic performances and a distinct lack of hustle from several players, the Buckeyes looked much worse for wear as they headed into the offseason.

Still, while last season was disappointing in many ways for Ohio State, this year could be their best shot at a strong season for several years to come. With most of last year’s incoming freshman class having transferred--a class loaded with four-star recruits--Ohio State is leaning heavily on upperclassmen to carry the load. Marc Loving, the de facto leader of last year’s team who led the Buckeyes in scoring with 14 points per game, is now a senior. Keita Bates-Diop and Jae’Sean Tate, who were second and third on the team in scoring respectively last season, return for their third season with the Buckeyes. Entering his second season at Ohio State, expectations are also high for sophomore guard JaQuan Lyle--the only player in his class to return to the Buckeyes after last season.

Beyond this core group, the Buckeyes return their two other top-scorers from the 2015-16 season. They just missed out on being ranked in the AP preseason poll for this year, with five Big Ten teams ranked ahead of them in the initial poll. They also bring in a talented recruiting class which includes forward Derek Funderburk and center Micah Potter.

Last year’s squad failed to make the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2008, and finished the season with a disappointing loss to Florida in the NIT. With troubling nonconference losses to the likes of UT-Arlington and Louisiana Tech, even a strong midseason run could not make up for the lack of consistency from the team. With many of the issues of last season being attributed to youth and inexperience, the Buckeyes will need to improve their chemistry and mature as a team if they hope to make the Big Dance this season.

This season’s nonconference schedule, at first glance, looks to be much tougher last year, and even playing Navy in Annapolis on Veteran’s Day could be a taller order than expected for the Buckeyes. Navy finished last season with a 19-14 record, fifth in the Patriot League, under sixth-year head coach Ed DeChellis. They return Shawn Anderson, their top scorer from last season, but lost their next three offensive weapons to graduation.

Ohio State has a long road ahead--including a tough nonconference schedule and a trying run through the Big Ten--if they have hopes of making the NCAA Tournament come March. But it all starts tonight in Annapolis.

Numbers to know

12-0

Ohio State is 12-0 in season openers under Thad Matta since he took over the program in 2004 (they had lost in 2003 to San Francisco in Jim O’Brien’s final term as head coach), and are looking to make it 13-straight as they prepare to face Navy. Still, Ohio State rarely opens the season with a true road game, and their record is just 12-7 all-time in such matchups. Overall, Matta is 320-108 in his tenure with the Buckeyes.

97.1

Ohio State’s adjusted defensive proficiency was among the highest in the nation in recent years under the tutelage of assistant coach Jeff Boals, who left the program after last season to become the head coach of Stony Brook. With Boals now departed, it will be interesting to see if the Buckeyes are able to maintain their high level of defensive prowess.

12

Ohio State’s BPI, or Basketball Power Index rank, according to ESPN, which takes into account percentage of roster returning, previous performance of those members, recruiting rankings and past coaching performance. The Buckeyes may have missed out on the AP Poll, but with the vast majority of last year’s scoring offense returning, they remain more of a known and formidable entity than many ranked teams.

Cast of characters

Ohio State

Marc Loving

The only senior on the Ohio State roster, Loving returns as the leading scorer for the Buckeyes, having averaged 14 points per game last season. After playing very much a background role for his first two years at Ohio State, Loving stepped up his game last season and became a leader for the Buckeyes on and off the court.

Jae'Sean Tate

Perhaps the most relevant pro-prospect for the Buckeyes, Tate finished last season with 11.7 points and 6.4 rebounds per game. Last year, he was one of Ohio State’s most accurate shooters, averaging 52.1 percent from the field. After sitting out the last seven games of the season due to injury, Tate can come back and bring rhythm to an offense which lacked consistency without him at the end of last season.

Navy

Shawn Anderson

One of just two returning starters from last year’s team, the junior guard started all 33 games for the Midshipmen last season, and was their leading scorer with 13.2 points per game. He came on strong at the end of last season, scoring double-figures through his last eight games.

Tim Abruzzo

The senior guard played in 30 games last season, and, despite averaging under seven points per game, led the Midshipmen in both steals, with 35 on the season, and three-pointers with 40. He was limited in his role last season, owing to a knee injury, but is expected to play a much larger part for the Midshipmen this year.

Ohio State hits the road again after dunking on a ranked team. Can they sustain this momentum?

First, Ohio State was amazing. They torched Bowling Green, Tulsa, Oklahoma and Rutgers, and looked to be on the fast track to greatness, a Big Ten title, and a playoff bid.

Then, Ohio State looked bad. Their offense sputtered against Indiana and Northwestern in underwhelming wins, and then so badly against Penn State that they actually lost. Forget a playoff bid, a New Year’s Six bowl looked unlikely, as a young Buckeye team would surely take another L or two.

And now...Ohio State looks amazing again. Virtually everything clicked last weekend against Nebraska, a top-ten ranked Nebraska, mind you, as Ohio State’s passing game found a rhythm, their offensive line provided deep protection, and a ball-hawking secondary scored twice. When the dust settled, the Buckeyes won 62-3. They never punted. And now, a nation looks towards the Michigan game with greater anticipation than they have in years.

But, of course, Ohio State isn’t playing Michigan this weekend. We promise. We double checked.

They’re playing Maryland. They’re not as good as Michigan. They aren’t as good as Nebraska. According to S&P+, they aren’t even as good as Indiana. But that doesn’t mean this game isn’t important, or that it can’t tell us anything about the Buckeyes, or the Terps.

Let’s dig into this a little bit.

Ohio State’s biggest advantages

Ohio State has better players. I’m not saying this to be glib or trite here. But recruiting matters, and even though Maryland has recruited a little better than you probably thought without checking the charts, Ohio State has a massive talent advantage at virtually every position. Per the 247 Talent Composite rankings, the Buckeyes have the fourth most talented roster in college football, trailing only Alabama, USC and LSU. Maryland clocks in at 37th, with 11 blue chip players on their roster. Ohio State has 58. That’s a big difference.

You’ll see that difference manifested at nearly every position group on Saturday. That isn’t to say that Maryland’s players aren’t good, or that they don’t have anybody who could play for Ohio State. But, and this is especially true when it comes to depth, Ohio State is bringing out guys that are a little bit bigger, a little bit faster, and a little bit more skilled. Even if the Buckeyes don’t execute quite as well as Maryland tomorrow, that talent advantage gives them a cushion.

The Buckeyes should be able to run the dang ball. Ohio State should be able to run, at least a little bit, on virtually everybody, and the have. They are 3rd in Rushing S&P+, after all. But they should have especially strong results against Maryland, who is near the very bottom of the country in rushing defense, ranking 127th in S&P+. The Buckeyes may not necessarily be able to break out multiple 30 yard runs, but five, six, seven yard gains, from Mike Weber, or Curtis Samuel, or others, should be on the table. Right now, Maryland allows five-yard carries on 41.6% of opponent runs. That’s bananas.

That keeps Ohio State on schedule, and makes their passing game tick. If the Buckeyes aren’t able to feed Weber (even coming off an injury) and company, something went wrong.

This isn’t much of a home field advantage. I’m not saying this to be mean, or to troll Maryland fans. But I live near College Park. I’m going to walk to this football game. And there are a lot of Ohio State fans who live in DC and in the Maryland and Virginia suburbs. In the best of cases, Maryland football doesn’t command a terrifying home field advantage, and these aren’t the best of circumstances. Every road trip has challenges, but nobody will confuse College Park with Madison or Happy Valley.

Maryland’s biggest advantages

They too, can run the dang ball. Ohio State should enjoy some success on the ground, but that doesn’t mean Maryland can’t either. The Terps have two successful, young running backs who are both explosive, and efficient. Ohio State’s defensive line is much athletic than Maryland’s offensive line, but their backs, especially Lorenzo Harrison, are capable of stringing together highlight yards and separation if they can get to the second level. Don’t expect the same kind of dominance that Ohio State showed against Nebraska.

What have they got to lose? Even if they somehow lose out (which is unlikely, since the Terps close the season against Rutgers), this season is already a success for Maryland. They’ve cut down on the turnovers, found some young playmakers, won five games, and established a recruiting foothold for the future. If they can grab an upset, they’re promised a bowl game. The expectations and pressure will all be on Ohio State. If the Terps can get a lucky break early in the game to engage their crowd, who knows what will happen?

Will Likely is still on this team. Statistically, Maryland’s secondary isn’t great. And he hasn’t had the monster year on special teams that he did last year. But Will Likely still plays for Maryland, and if you keep kicking the ball to him, he’s...well...probable to eventually pop a big play. Ohio State didn’t punt against Nebraska. They have a great special teams unit, late game field goals notwithstanding, but better to not test that, if possible.

Summary

F/+ Projection: Ohio State 42, Maryland 15

Win Probability: Ohio State 94%

Ohio State is probably going to win this game. They should. They have a huge advantage at quarterback, a massive one in the secondary, a mismatch with their running game, while headed into a tepid road environment. But weird things happen in football, and teams with lesser topline talent, like Northwestern, played Ohio State very tough.

The Terps are capable of beating Ohio State if the Buckeyes turn the ball over and come out flat. But even if that happens for a half, I’d still expect the Bucks to take care of business, before turning their attention to the state up north.
