Thus far, the Coyotes have played the fewest games of any team in the NHL, but they have the distinction of extracting the maximum number of points from their one game. While looking at their place in the standings might give the impression that they are slow out of the gate, but Coyotes GM John Chayka recently spoke with Fox Sports Arizona with a bold proclamation: “We expect to be successful.”

Who knows what Chayka means by successful. If it is in the short term, then one has to be skeptical. There isn’t really an outlet that has the Coyotes even finishing higher than about 6th in their division. Maybe Chayda was referring to the prospects? That was almost certainly it. The Coyotes have done fairly well in order to stock their franchise with youthful potential. How about as a franchise? Yes, the Coyotes look like they might be in a better spot than they’ve been in decades. The NHL seems committed to keeping the Coyotes in Arizona, and has even doubled down on their investment in the desert, adding Las Vegas to the league. Chayka is right, just so long as you look far enough in the future.

After just 21 pitches, Cleveland Indians starter Trevor Bauer was removed from the game at the request of Toronto Blue Jays manager John Gibbins after the wound on his pitching hand opened and blood started to scuff up the baseball.

Obviously, the picture above shows abnormal bleeding from the pinkie finger that had received ten stitches after an accident involving his drone.

Terry Francona was forced to hand the reigns over to Dan Otero. This will have an impact not only how Tito uses the bullpen the rest of the game but also who starts game 4: Ryan Merritt or Corey Kluber.

Game Notes:

Opponent: Colorado Avalanche (1-0)

Location: PPG Paints Arena

Time: 2:00 a.m. (We could really put any time we want to here.)

Broadcast: ROOT Sports

Battle of the Unbeatens

Both the Penguins and Avalanche are undefeated, and only one will remain so at the end of the night. We’re trying to hype this game as much as possible.

Avs Player To Watch

Joe Colborne

Apparently he played in Calgary for a few years. Never heard of the guy. He scored a hat trick in Colorado’s win over Dallas the other night, continuing the trend of millennials scoring a lot of goals.

Storylines To Watch

BUFFALO, NY – JUNE 24: during round one of the 2016 NHL Draft on June 24, 2016 in Buffalo, New York. (Photo by Bruce Bennett/Getty Images)

Patrick Roy is gone, and so is the fun of waiting for reaction shots of the Colorado bench. The new coach’s name is actually Jared Bednar, believe it or not.

The Pens may be playing with some line combinations. Let’s not freak out and overanalyze every shift in that regard. It’s the third game of the season. The team had 11 minutes to play together during training camp.

Ben Roethlisberger had surgery, so people will be holding vigil outside of UPMC Presby instead of watching this game.

Malkin always scores some unreal goal against the Avs in Pittsburgh, so keep an eye out for that.

Prediction

Penguins will win 4-2. Conor Sheary will score the game-winning goal on a shorthanded breakaway at 4:27 of the third period.

Hey – you in the market for a 170-pound MMA fighter? If you are, do I have a deal for you! How’d you like to get your hands on the greatest welterweight fighter of all-time, Georges St-Pierre?! Because for promoters outside the UFC, that is actually an option now.

In a bombshell announcement, GSP stated on The MMA Hour today that he is out of his UFC contract and is a free agent. As he explains it (and as it is detailed on The MMA Hour‘s home site, MMA Fighting), the ongoing negotiations for his return to the UFC’s octagon have fallen apart, and he is free and clear of his contractual commitment to the promotion.

“You heard it right,” GSP told host Ariel Helwani. “I’m a free agent.”

Apparently he had a deal offered to him by former UFC boss Lorenzo Fertitta that the new ownership failed to agree with. And after a proposed fight with Robbie Lawler was scrapped because Lawler wanted to take time off, GSP was clear of his UFC contract (according to his lawyer).

“At least I’m a free man,” St-Pierre went on to state. “Now, I know I’m free. I have other options. I’m not caught up legally with a contract. I’m a free man.”

UFC representatives have yet to make a statement on the accuracy of GSP’s beliefs, but it’s safe to say we haven’t heard the last of this.

Jean Francois Has Best Performance of Season After Trip to Haiti to Provide Relief for Nation Suffering Effects of Hurricane Matthew.

WASHINGTON, D.C. (October 17, 2016) – Washington Redskins defensive endRicky Jean Francois picked up a crucial sack in the fourth quarter yesterday as the Redskins won their fourth straight game and held on to beat the division rival Philadelphia Eagles 27-20 Sunday afternoon at FedEx Field.

Days after making a trip to his father’s native Haiti to provide medical supplies for those effected by Hurricane Matthew, Jean Francois was instrumental in holding the Eagles to just six offensive points as he earned three tackles and was a consistent disruptor in his best game of the season.

“This was a tremendous team effort from start to finish and I’m just glad I could make a difference out there,” said Jean Francois. “We’re getting better every week and this win just shows that our hard work is going to keep paying off.”

Used to think his first name was Ricky-Jean. But no. It’s Ricky. His LAST name is Jean Francois. Hail Ricky #HTTR #PHIvsWAS

— Anthony Brown (@SkinsHogHeaven) October 16, 2016

Jean Francois delivered a game-changing sack on the final play before the two-minute warning, putting quarterback Carson Wentz on his back to set up a third and very long that the Eagles would not convert. The Eagles punted the ball away and never got it back as the Redskins ran out the clock to clinch another hard fought victory.

Mission to Haiti

Along with teammate and Haitian-American Pierre Garcon, Jean Francois delivered medical supplies to Haiti on the Monday before the game in an effort to help the nearly 1.4 million people who are in need of emergency aid.

“I’m incredibly blessed to be in the position that I’m in and I believe it’s important to never hesitate to help those in need,” said Jean Francois. “My heart is very heavy for those that are struggling and to see it firsthand is something that will always stick with me. Everything I do on and off the field is in honor of everyone working to make life better in Haiti.”

Jean Francois is continuing to champion the cause down in Haiti as he went to New York Monday morning to make media rounds at Sports Illustrated, ESPN, USA Today, Sirius XM and CBS Sports Radio. He largely spoke about his relief-providing trip and continued to raise awareness that resources and supplies are still needed in the weeks after Matthew.

“It’s going to be a long process for the country but the Haitian people are all about survival and working hard,” said Jean Francois. “I’m going to do whatever I can to help the cause and I hope I can inspire others to join in.”

Ben Roethlisberger had surgery Monday morning on the torn meniscus in his left knee, and there’s a good chance he’ll return sooner rather than later.

Pro Football Talk reported before the surgery that it would be a “cleanup” as opposed to a “repair,” which should shorten his recovery time.

“Though we do not know a specific timetable for when he will be able to return to the field, we are confident this injury is not long-term,” Steelers coach Mike Tomlin said in a statement via Mark Kaboly of DK on Pittsburgh Sports.

Roethlisberger’s knee was injured during Sunday’s 30-15 loss at Miami. He played through the injury in the second half.

Landry Jones is set to start in place of Roethlisberger Sunday against the Patriots at Heinz Field. The Steelers have a bye in Week 8 and go to Baltimore in Week 9. Roethlisberger, who leads the league with 16 touchdown passes, could be back for that game.

For now, the Steelers (4-2) lead the AFC North because the Ravens also lost Sunday.

tBBC Redskins fans should pay attention to the Raiders Stadium deal

Redskins fans should pay attention to the Raiders Stadium deal
Anthony Brown
via our good friends at Buckeye Battle Cry
Visit their fantastic blog and read the full article (and so much more) here

Heads up, Redskins fans. Your future could be playing out in the Oakland/Las Vegas Raiders Stadium deal.

Two stories caught my eye.

Mark Davis seems to suggest Raiders have already moved to Las Vegas.

“The Nevada Senate voted in favor of a $750 million expenditure for a new stadium that could host the Oakland Raiders in the near future. Responding to the vote on Friday, Raiders owner Mark Davis issued a statement that makes it seem like the move has already been made from Northern California to the great state of Nevada.” (Emphasis mine)

And this one.

Potential issue with Raiders revenue share deal in Vegas.

“Any time a professional sports entity finds itself creating a relationship with a casino mogul, there promises to be some rough patches.”

The first story flags the process of how stadium deals come together. Public, meaning “government,” support is the first tangible step. The cost to the public is approaching one billion dollars.

States don’t usually build or own commercial sports stadiums. The sheer scale of such projects demand government commitment to build the infrastructure to support it. The league and the union make larger commitments, but States speak up first.

The Redskins have already started conversations with DMV jurisdictions … with the “M” and the “V” part anyway.

The second story highlights two points.

Business relationships with casino owners give pro sports leagues the hives.

The Black Sox scandal may be ancient history to you, but close association to gamblers carries real risk the NFL prefers to avoid altogether. Hog Heaven thinks they will be no more successful stopping Mark Davis than they were stopping his father, Al Davis.

Or, maybe not.

We are trying to figure out why the Redskins emailed Hog Heaven last year to “Like” the billion dollar MGM National Harbor on Facebook.

How will Daniel Snyder vote on the Raiders to Las Vegas and what’s in it for him?

The National Harbor development sits right off the Capital Beltway on the Potomac River. It is geographically ideal for a new Redskins stadium if one is not build in the District of Columbia.

Why DC won’t get a stadium — too many hurdles

D.C. is the fan sentimental favorite for a new stadium. We believe business and politics flips the normal order of preference of “DMV” to Virginia having the best shot. I read that most Redskins season ticket holders today are Virginians.

Prince Georges County, Maryland, won’t sit idle and let another jurisdiction steal its most prominent source of fame. Their allies in Annapolis are willing partners.

And then there is the District. They owner does not return their calls after the DC Council condemned the team name as racist. They seem perplexed that Daniel Snyder takes their refusal to say “Redskins” to be akin to not saying his own name. Beyond the District is federal hostility.

Hillary Clinton is the likely winner of the November elections. Whomever she appoints as Interior Secretary will likewise continue the department’s disdain for “Redskins.” D.C. could lobby for a change of heart. Their own reluctance to use the name weakens their case.

If Trump wins, Congress will flip to Democratic control in 2018. That may be better for the party, but worse for a Redskins return to the District.

Principled stand by DC, or shot an arrow in their foot? You decide.

And then there are the hard dollar hurdles for the District. It is not a State (although its people should have voting representation in Congress). They have neither the population nor financial resources to absorb the hits as well as Maryland or Virginia can.

DC committed $660 million to support the Nationals baseball stadium. It was bitterly resisted at the time, only to have every city leader take credit for it once built. Perhaps the success of that deal will make the sell easier for a new DC Redskins stadium now than in the 1990s when it was lost. My gut feel says no to that.

“D” faces more hurdles to winning the deal than the “M” and the “V” is all we are saying.

Vince Wilfork and the Texans looked like they were ready to have a fork stuck in them Sunday night, because they looked done.

The Texans trailed the Colts 23-9 with seven minutes left, and fans started leaving early.

But Brock Osweiler threw two touchdown passes in the final two and a half minutes, and the Texans won 26-23 on Nick Novak’s 33-yard field goal in overtime.

“I hope their brisket turned out OK,” Wilfork said of the fans who left early, according to NFL.com. “They had to go home and check it.”

The Texans (4-2) remained atop the AFC South with the win while the Colts (2-4) dropped to last place in the division.

“It kind of sucks to be one of those fans, because when we come back and we win the game it sucks on your part because it shows your true colors.” Texans defensive back Charles James said.

Considering this was an AFC South game, the most surprising thing about fans leaving early is that in order to get up and leave, you have to be awake.

tBBC Redskins fans were kinda wrong about this issue

Redskins fans were kinda wrong about this issue
Scott Hirsch
via our good friends at Buckeye Battle Cry
Visit their fantastic blog and read the full article (and so much more) here

As we’ve discussed before, Redskins fans have been pretty accurate in their criticisms against the coaching staff, such as not hiring Wade Phillips for Defensive Coordinator (HUGE mistake there by Gruden), running the ball more (finally listening), stop with the predictable play calling, draft a dominant defensive end. The list goes on.

Of course, the coaches still need to understand Kirk Cousins needs to be babied as he does not have the confidence to through the deep ball and will not until they slowly build his confidence through the season. He isn’t where he was at the end of the last season as we all painfully know now (we also know a LOT of success was really Jordan Reed who is probably the easiest target in the NFL). He’s where he was near the beginning of last season with some small improvements.

There is one issue where Redskins fans can admit a bit of a mistake. Where Redskins fans fail usually is in patience. In this case, many fans were asking to change Jamison Crowder as the punt returner. The fans love Crowder as a slot receiver and wonder why he isn’t called for even more plays. But as a returner, he was one of the worst in the league last year. But this year, wow, what a change. He stopped his stutter steps and now hits an extra gear he didn’t have last year and is still shifty as heck. Now he is currently the best in the NFL with a punt return average over 500% of last year’s. Not bad, and hats off to Special Teams Coach Kotwica on this one.

Week 6 Report Card: F is for Fire Everybody
Ryan Kennedy
via our good friends at Buckeye Battle Cry
Visit their fantastic blog and read the full article (and so much more) here

I’d like to welcome you all to Rock Bottom. I suggest making yourselves comfortable, we’re going to be here a while.

With last night’s embarrassing 26-23 loss to the Houston Texans, the Indianapolis Colts accomplished the impossible. I’m not talking about blowing a 23-9 lead in the final three minutes to a Brock Osweiler led team. No, it’s much bigger than that. Last night the Colts did something that hadn’t been done in the history of this franchise: they made me hate them. Allow me to clarify:

I hate this team with my whole heart and soul.

It’s no secret that I’m firmly entrenched on the pessimistic side of the Colts fan spectrum. The beauty of pessimism is that you’re either right or pleasantly surprised. The first 28 minutes of last night’s game were pleasantly surprising. Frank Gore was breaking off runs, Luck was near perfect, the defense was actually getting pressure on the quarterback, the Corpse of Robert Mathis even reanimated itself to get a strip-sack. In the final two minutes of the half, when the offense normally kicks into gear, Luck threw a bad interception depriving the Colts of a chance at points before the halftime break.

Then the wheels came off.

If you watched the game you already now how bad it was. If you didn’t watch you’re probably better off for it. I imagine Chuck Pagano’s halftime speech went something like this,

“Ok guys, great start out there, but we’ve still got 30 minutes of football to play. We’re going to take everything we did well in the first half and scrap it. Vontae, you’ve been doing a helluva a job shutting down Deandre Hopkins, but I want Mathis to cover him now. Houston won’t see it coming. It’s important to keep them off balance. Defense, I want you to ease up on the tackling. Not only are you all apparently made of glass, but I want them to run so much they get winded. That’s how we stop the run right there. Andy, under no circumstances should you throw the ball away. Never give up, never surrender! For God’s sake hold on to that ball. Finally, if we find ourselves in a fourth and inches situation be sure to line up in the shotgun. Sure, any schmuck can literally just lean forward for a first down, but it’s too simple. We gotta out think ’em. I know football can be confusing sometimes, so don’t worry, I’ll be there to blow a timeout so we can all get back on the same page. Now get out there and chop some wood!”

That’s not verbatim, but I’m sure it’s close.

In summary, the Colts failed to clear even the lowest bar set for them. They are a bad team lead by an egregiously inept coach. They are consistently unprepared to snap the ball, even immediately following a time out. It feels like every big play is called back because of a holding penalty. The defense’s base formation is “running around looking confused.”

The worst part of it all though is Pagano and Grigson’s refusal to own up to their mistakes. And I hate them for it.

Grigson tried to do it in an interview last week, but then immediately threw Andrew Luck under the bus by saying the quarterback’s contract is holding the team back. Pagano is the worst. He insists that the Colts have a “good” defense. I think he really believes that. Well let me tell you, Chuck, any defense that gives up 14 points in under three minutes to Brock Osweiler is without question the worst in the league.

Admittedly, there were some bright spots last night. Between Vinatieri and Mcafee the Colts have the best special teams unit in the league. T.Y. Hilton is a beast, and it appears that given time the offensive line could become a serviceable unit. None of this, however, is enough to clean up the ugly mess this franchise has become.

You might think I’m being dramatic, but ask yourself this: when was the last time you enjoyed watching a Colts game? When was the last time you walked out of the stadium or turned off the tv after a game and felt good? My guess is that it’s been a while. In their current state the Colts are borderline unwatchable. Lucas Oil Stadium has been full of visiting fans this year because people don’t want to pay to watch this disaster. I don’t blame them one bit.

I loathe this team not only because of what it has become, but because of what it could be with even remotely competent people at the helm. The Indianapolis Colts can be rebuilt, but Jim Irsay has to burn it all down first. He shouldn’t wait until the season is over. He should do it today.

All that being said, am I going to watch next weeks game? You bet. Do I want them to win even though it may be in their best interest to lose? I sure do.

At the end of the day I’m like a kid at recess. Yes, I’m throwing rocks at the Colts, but it’s only because deep down I actually love them.

Report Card

Adam Vinatieri and Pat McAfee: A

Everyone else: F

Bills player trashes Colin Kaepernick after 49ers QB’s miserable start

Colin Kaepernick took over starting quarterback duties for the San Francisco 49ers in Week 6 against the Buffalo Bills.

Kaepernick’s season debut didn’t go so well. In the 45-16 loss, he completed just 13 of his 29 attempts for 187 yards and a score, adding another 66 yards on eight carries. Not terrible fantasy-football production, but bad enough to get the 49ers whipped and reignite a potential quarterback controversy.

One Bills player unloaded Kaepernick after the performance in an interview with Bleacher Report’s Tyler Dunne:

“Done.”

“Terrible.”

“More a distraction than a contributing member of the team.”

Buffalo cornerback Stephon Gilmore put his name behind a quote and was a tad nicer about his reaction:

We wanted to do everything we could to make him throw the ball. I mean, he’s an athlete. You can’t take that from him. But when it comes to passing the ball, he can’t really throw. …We took advantage of that.

After suffering through weeks of ineffectiveness by Blaine Gabbert and making a change, it’s hard to imagine the 49ers will bench Kaepernick after one game. It’s worth seeing what he has and if he can improve, and more important than anything to remember just how bad the team around him is at most spots.

Quotes from Bills players, anonymous or not, won’t change San Francisco’s mind. It sure makes for some interesting post-game chatter, though. Kaepernick and the 49ers welcome the Tampa Bay Buccaneers to town in Week 7.

Ohio State West Pipeline Continues?

While many pundits have all but put Jeffrey Okudah in the Buckeyes 2017 recruiting class, it still isn’t official and the Buckeyes may actually be looking to take more than one safety in this class anyways. That second name would be Bubba Bolden, 4-star safety out of Bishop Gorman HS in Las Vegas, NV. That high school sounds familiar doesn’t it? It currently is the home to three Buckeye recruiting commitments in Tate Martell, Tyjon Lindsey and Haskell Garrett. Bolden himself earned a Buckeye offer back on September 6th, and immediately they shot to the top of his list because of the connections with his teammates.”

“Thoughts on Last Week

I worried Ohio State might be in trouble last week when Indiana came out and scored immediately after halftime; needless to say, I was unimpressed with the Buckeyes’ performance. Luckily, Ohio State’s defense was able to rise to the challenge and shut down the Hoosiers the rest of the afternoon, including a huge fourth down stop that would have cut the lead to seven late in the game.”

LGHL Urban Meyer missed the final play of Ohio State’s win

Urban Meyer missed the final play of Ohio State’s win

He didn’t even see it coming.

“I didn’t even see it. We were scripting for the next (series). I just almost got ran over on the sidelines.”

-Urban Meyer, via Nicole Auerbach, USA Today

Saturday’s win over the Wisconsin Badgers was a record-setting day in many ways for Ohio State Buckeyes head coach Urban Meyer. For starters, he earned his 20th road win with Ohio State--the fastest coach to do so since Walter Camp at Yale, who began his run in 1888. The 20 wins by the Buckeyes, too, are the longest streak of road wins since the Miami Hurricanes’ run from 1984-88. Saturday also marked the 160th win of the Meyer’s career, which has spanned 15 seasons at Bowling Green, Utah, Florida and, since 2012, Ohio State. With the win, Meyer has now tied Oklahoma’s Bob Stoops for the most wins in the first 15 years of his career by an FBS head coach.

However, Meyer didn’t see the win coming, literally, as he didn’t actually witness the final play of overtime from the sidelines. As the Ohio State defense, led by defensive end Tyquan Lewis, collapsed the pocket surrounding Wisconsin freshman quarterback Alex Hornibrook, sacking him and ending the game in favor of the Buckeyes, Meyer’s eyes were not on the field. Instead, he was coordinating the Buckeyes’ next series, prepping in case they were unable to hold on 4th-and-goal and would head to a second overtime. Though Meyer was nearly bulldozed in the process as the team rushed the field following the play (which would have been an unfortunate discomfort on an already painful evening for the head coach, who was whacked by a referee early in the game and received a 15-yard penalty), he quickly recovered, and called the game “a top-fiver” between two outstanding and well-coached teams.

“Ohio State-Wisconsin’s overnight number was up 60% from last year’s Week 7 primetime game on ABC, Penn State at Ohio State, and it peaked with a 7.3 rating when Buckeyes-Badgers went into overtime.”

-Ken Fang, Awful Announcing

Despite sports television ratings being down overall in 2016 (including overall ratings for both NFL Sunday Night Football and Monday Night Football, as well as the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio), college football ratings have actually been improving steadily. One of the big winners seems to be primetime games on ABC, which has beaten out coverage of the SEC on CBS in every game this season except one. Saturday’s matchup between Ohio State and Wisconsin, aired in primetime on ABC, drew a 5.6 overnight rating--the third highest overnight rating this season behind week one’s matchup between Notre Dame and Texas (a primetime, Sunday night game on ABC), which earned a 7.0 rating, and week five’s Louisville-Clemson matchup (Saturday primetime on ABC) which garnered a 6.0 rating. Viewership peaked when the Buckeyes went into overtime between 11:45 p.m.-12 a.m.

Saturday Night Football was competing with a number of other sporting events Saturday as well, including the SEC on CBS (No. 1 Alabama at No. 9 Tennessee), both the ALCS and NLCS and the start of NHL hockey. Notre Dame’s matchup against Stanford on NBC drew just 2.43 million viewers to Ohio State-Wisconsin’s 8.32 million.

ABC’s production also placed in the top-five regular season college football games of all time in terms of online viewership, with nearly 38.7 million minutes streamed. Viewership was also up 341 percent over last year’s week seven matchup between Ohio State and Penn State in primetime, according to ESPN.

The Buckeyes have another Saturday Night Football matchup on ABC this weekend, when Ohio State faces Penn State at 8 p.m. in Happy Valley. Two weeks later, Ohio State is scheduled to take on No. 8 Nebraska at 8 p.m. on their third rendition of Saturday Night Football this season.

“You look around the country and there’s a lot of games decided by the last second. We work way too hard to let something bad happen in those types of moments. We practice and prepare, and when we go out here it’s just do what you practice. And that’s what we did.”

-Ohio State receiver Noah Brown, via Tim May, The Columbus Dispatch

It took a very long time for Ohio State to find a rhythm on offense against Wisconsin Saturday--if there was an actual rhythm at all by its conclusion--but the plays which ultimately gave the Buckeyes a win were products of serious practice and preparation. It was once again the combo of quarterback J.T. Barrett and receiver Noah Brown who stepped up to the plate in overtime.

After a rough night throwing the ball, including tossing a crucial interception in Wisconsin’s end zone in the third quarter, Barrett and Brown connected for a touchdown in overtime on 3rd-and-2 from the seven yard line. It was Brown’s first touchdown catch since pulling in four in Ohio State’s win over Oklahoma. He ended the night with four receptions for 48 yards. In many ways, the play looked eerily similar to some drawn up against Oklahoma earlier this season. But according to Brown, he and Barrett had been working on that fade route well before the season started for the very purpose of executing perfectly when it counted--like in overtime against Wisconsin.

With a torrential downpour hindering much of the passing game, the Buckeyes were forced to turn to their rushing attack for most of the game and attempt to break down one of the best defensive lines in college football. Unfortunately, though, running back Mike Weber and H back Curtis Samuel recorded just 46 yards each on the ground and no touchdowns, with each averaging their lowest yards per carry of the season. Barrett once again stepped up to the plate, however, earning 92 hard-fought yards on 21 carries and adding two touchdowns to Ohio State’s total. Barrett, who was named Big Ten co-offensive player of the week for his performance, was ultimately responsible for all three of Ohio State’s touchdowns against Wisconsin, and broke Braxton Miller’s record for touchdowns responsible for at Ohio State with 89.

It only took me a half a bottle of Whiskey to get over the first half of the Wisconsin game.

But whatever it takes, right? That appears to be the motto Ohio State used as well in staging a prime-time comeback. The Buckeyes got the job done. It wasn’t pretty, but credit the Badgers.

I wanted a win and got it. But what else did we get?

Scott
A fast, first-quarter win: Not so much. But it was a W.
No false starts: Still waiting.
No running Badgers: The streak had to end some time, right?
Whatever it takes: Yards were scarce in the first half but OSU picked it up in the second half and got the job done.

Joe
Jump around: It was the Buckeyes doing the jumping around after the game. And for the record, I don’t think the crowd was really a factor.
Weber time: He only had 11 touches. That’s not enough. I’m sure Coach Urban Meyer will address that going into the State Penn, I mean, Penn State game.
Houston, we have a problem. It’s Hornibrook: He looked pretty good in the first half to me. Of course, his one TD pass could have been completed by Stevie Wonder. That’s how wide open Jazz Peavy was. He spent a lot of time on his back in the second half and lost 34 yards rushing due to sacks.
Brown Town, USA: The town was shutdown most of the night, but there was an overtime uprising that did the trick for the Buckeyes.

Ben
A win: It wasn’t pretty and the offense still has some passing-game woes. But at this point in the season, it’s all about the W.
Better offense: The receivers still aren’t getting the necessary separation, but J.T. Barrett finally hit on a long ball and had a couple others dropped that should have been caught. Running game showed some signs too. But it’s not perfect, yet.
Sixty minutes of hell: It was more like 30 minutes of hell, but it was good enough. Hornibrook was not the same in the second half as the front seven of Ohio State dominated. Corey Clement had the one nice 68-yard run but otherwise he was rather pedestrian.
Good, solid effort, get out with a W: The guys played hard, according to Meyer. Not sure I would go as far as saying it was a good, solid effort, but it definitely was in the second half. Build on that.

Brandon
Noodle-arm dominance: See above. He looked great in the first half.
Front seven dominance: The second half was the return of the Silver Bullets. In reality, after the first touchdown, the defense really started to play the pass better and only allow a few nickel and dime type things on the ground, other than Clement’s run.
Assert offensive force: Ohio State had more than 400 yards of offense, but it just didn’t look like the OSU offense we saw earlier this season. Things got better in the second half but passing game still needs work.

WVa
Turn it into Kriss Kross Jump: The fans still did the Jump Around but the Badgers were only up three and OSU was driving for the go-ahead touchdown. I think Ohio State showed the entire country it can win a slobberknocker.
B1G title game revisit: Not even close, other than the win.
Spread the wealth, evenly: The 17 passes were distributed well but Weber needed more touches on the ground.

LGHL What we learned from Ohio State's fall ball season

What we learned from Ohio State's fall ball season

Ohio State baseball concluded fall practice. It now sets its focus to the new season.

While most of the attention on the campus of Ohio State is set squarely on the crack of shoulder pads at this time of the year, the past month and a half has also included the crack of the bat as the Buckeye baseball team engaged in fall practice. Some 40 student athletes, including 16 returning letterwinners, went through conditioning, drills, and the annual Scarlet and Gray World Series.

"We're excited about the 2017 season," head coach Greg Beals said at the outset of fall ball. "There are obviously a lot of holes that we have to replace from last year's ball club, but we have a lot of pieces and we are looking forward to putting that puzzle together and having another championship run next spring."

Beals, who is in his seventh year at the helm of the program, guided Ohio State to a 44-20-1 record in 2016, with the Buckeyes making an improbable run to the Big Ten tournament championship and a berth in the NCAA tournament. But a sizable chunk of the team's production left via the MLB draft and graduation, leaving many more questions than answers.

"We have a lot of talent that will push the program through very competitive scrimmages and position battles this fall," Beals said. "The newcomers are very talented and will learn from the veterans who have worked very hard to get us here today."

Gray took the series from Scarlet three games to two, but the outcome is far less important than what the players showed on the field. So what did we learn about the baseball Bucks in the S&G World Series?

Holdovers

Ohio State lost a total of 13 contributors (nine seniors, four juniors) from 2016's championship team. In all, the offense must replace 80 percent of its hits, 80 percent of its doubles, 86 percent of its home runs, 83 percent of its total extra-base hits, and 77 percent of its runs batted in. The pitching staff must look to fill holes after losing 57 percent of its starts, 45 percent of its innings, and 42 percent of its strikeouts.

While that's a whole lot to lose, the cupboard is not entirely bare. Senior Jalen Washington, a co-captain on last year's squad and the starting catcher, is making a position switch to shortstop after the entirety of the starting infield departed. Washington put together a 4-for-18 effort with four runs scored in the S&G series, and has the kind of athleticism to seamlessly make the switch from backstop to middle infielder.

The only other returning upperclassmen who saw regular time a season ago are junior Tre Gantt (4-for-17, four RBIs), who will be moving from right field to center field, and fifth-year senior first baseman Zach Ratcliff (7-for-14, three runs, seven RBIs).

Sophomores Brady Cherry (5-for-17, five runs, four RBIs), who is the favorite to claim the third base job, and Jacob Barnwell (2-for-9, four runs), who will take over for Washington behind the plate, are the only other returnees with any real game experience.

On the mound, redshirt junior Adam Niemeyer and sophomores Ryan Feltner and Connor Curlis are in the mix for the starting rotation, while redshirt senior Jake Post, redshirt juniors Yianni Pavlopoulos and Kyle Michalik, and junior Seth Kinker bring back plenty of experience in the bullpen.

Transfers

Among the 17 newcomers to the Buckeyes' program, five are transfer students from the community college circuit. The most impressive among them during fall ball were left fielder Tyler Cowles, second baseman Noah McGowan, and first baseman Bo Coolen, all of whom played for the Gray side.

Cowles, a Grove City, Ohio native, attended Sinclair CC, and was a monster this past season. He had a .364/.471/.636 slash line with 17 doubles, 13 home runs, 51 RBIs, and 21 stolen bases in 65 games for a Tartan Pride club that placed third in the NJCAA Division II World Series. Cowles was 5-for-20 with a home run, two runs scored, and seven driven in the S&G series to put himself into the discussion for outfield playing time.

McGowan, slashed .393/.511/.674 with 13 doubles, seven home runs, and 38 RBIs in 2016 for McLennan Community College in Waco, Texas. He displayed that impressive bat this fall as well, going 6-for-15 and scoring two runs.

Coolen, who is from Honolulu, Hawaii and put up a .343/.396/.414 slash line in 44 games at Cypress College in California this past season, was 4-for-17 in the fall games, including two doubles, four runs, and a pair of RBIs.

A pair of McGowan's teammates from McLennan also transferred in to help the pitching staff, and had mixed results. 6-foot-6 right-hander Reece Calvert got pounded in Game One to the tune of five runs, four earned, in four innings of work, while righty reliever Dustin Jourdan was perfect in 1.1 innings out of the bullpen in Game Five.

New kids on campus

There were 11 true freshmen and three redshirt freshmen trying to make an impression during the fall ball season. These players are the future of the program, but the results were mixed during the S&G series.

The most impressive was true freshman Dominic Canzone, a Louisville Slugger High School All-American from Walsh Jesuit. Canzone made a strong play to be considered for the starting right field spot, going 6-for-15 with four runs scored three RBIs in the series while batting in the No. 3 hole for the Scarlet side.

But the remaining newbies appear to be a work in progress. Middle infielders Casey Demko and Noah West impressed with their glovework, but still need work at the plate, and 6-foot-5, 205-pound Conner Pohl has the intimidating physique and physical skillset, but needs to adjust to the college game.

It was a tough series for pitchers, with 51 runs being scored between the two sides in the five games, and the freshmen hurlers took the brunt of it. 14 of those runs were charged to Andrew Magno, Michael McDonough, Jake Vance, Gavin Lyon, and Collin Lollar in their first taste of collegiate competition.

Now we wait

We're roughly four months away from Opening Day of Ohio State's 2017 season, so there's plenty of time for Beals and his coaching staff to sort through the performance of the players in the Scarlet and Gray series and throughout fall practice. There are positional battles that will likely be waged into January and early February as the squad takes shape.

This much is certain, though: the Buckeyes have tremendous holes to fill from last season's club, and, particularly offensively, fall ball left a lot of questions unresolved. How quickly certain freshmen develop and whether or not the transfer students can acclimate themselves to the higher level of competition will go a long way towards determining if this team is rebuilding or just reloading.

Beals is no stranger to starting over at Ohio State, as the program was a total reclamation project when he arrived, and he turned it into a winner. He'll have to do his best coaching job to date to prevent the Buckeyes from a steep dropoff in the coming season.

It wasn’t 59-0, but Ohio State still got the W.

The first half of the Wisconsin game was the first time all season that Ohio State looked like they had an inexperienced defense. The Badgers’ offense isn’t built around speed, yet they managed to get the edge at will during a first half that saw them put up 16 points — well above the average of 10.8 points that the Buckeyes allowed through the first five weeks of the season.

Despite the slow start, the Buckeyes managed to leave Camp Randall Stadium with their perfect season intact. A demoralizing pass rush, combined with suffocating coverage on the outside, proved to be too much for the Badgers to overcome. The defense played far from great, but as Urban Meyer said after the game: a lot of good teams don’t play great at Camp Randall. Let’s take a look at some of the better moment’s from Ohio State’s latest big win on the road:

Gareon Conley is Ohio State’s latest lock-down corner

Conley has emerged this season as one of the country’s best cornerbacks. His combination of length and ball skills gives him the ability to not only blanket any receiver across from him, but also to make plays when opposing quarterbacks try to test him.

Conley managed to bait Wisconsin quarterback Alex Hornibrook into an interception during the third quarter as Ohio State was beginning to mount its comeback:

The Badgers managed to get Ohio State’s linebackers to bite on the play-action and Hornibrook had a receiver break open across the middle of the field. He displayed nice touch on his passes all night, but this touch eventually got him in trouble as Conley was able to bait him into throwing to the wrong spot. Just as it appears that Hornibrook had perfectly led his receiver, Conley comes out of nowhere to snag the pass.

A lot of cornerbacks can do a reasonably good job at taking care of their assignment and limiting big plays, but it takes a special player to have the confidence to leave a receiver open before closing in to create a turnover. This is the skill that Conley has brought to the team more and more as he’s matured as a playmaker, and it’ll likely be what makes him one of the first 32 players off the board in the 2017 NFL Draft.

Malik Hooker might be Ohio State’s best overall defensive player

Hooker has had better games in terms of creating turnovers, but last Saturday was his finest performance yet in making crucial tackles. Overall, he racked up six tackles, but none were bigger than this stop during Wisconsin’s final drive of regulation:

Hooker%201.jpg

The Buckeyes are just rushing their four defensive linemen here and have their cornerbacks in man coverage. This leaves Hooker to patrol his half of the field with his only real responsibility being to take away any big play threats. Wisconsin slot receiver No. 11 Jazz Peavy had a big day on the ground and through the air. The Badgers hoped to get him the ball here with some room to run on a crossing pattern:

Hooker%202.jpg

Hooker drops about five yards at the snap, but plants his foot in the turf and drives up the field as he reads the quarterbacks eyes and anticipates the route. It’s this type of vision that has allowed Hooker to intercept four passes in six games this season, but here this vision allows him to put himself in the best position possible to make a play on the ball carrier.

Hooker%203.jpg

Peavy is able to catch the pass, but Hooker is already in hot pursuit. Most players with eight yards of separation between them and the ball carrier would choose to break down and ensure they make the open-field tackle, but Hooker isn’t most players:

Hooker%204.jpg

Hooker manages to cover those eight yards in the time that Peavy was able to turn his head upfield. This was as far as he got, as Hooker took out Peavy’s legs with an excellent open field tackle. Three plays later, the Badgers were forced to punt and the game went to overtime. The turnovers that Hooker has created this season are great, but it’s these types of plays that demonstrate his elite instincts and speed that make him one of college football’s best safeties.

Jalyn Holmes said enough is enough

Holmes was in the Badgers’ backfield all night and especially when it mattered most. Ohio State didn’t blitz on the most important play of the game, choosing instead to trust their cornerbacks in man coverage while allowing their linebackers to take away any underneath routes over the middle. A brief hesitation by Hornibrook was all Holmes need to rush straight through Wisconsin’s overmatched offensive line and win the game:

Joey Bosa’s walk-off sack against Penn State in 2014 was rightfully a defining moment of the season, but Holmes’ own walk-off sack should not be ignored considering it came against a much better team and didn’t result from a blown blocking assignment. There have been a lot of big plays in Ohio State’s six consecutive wins, but Holmes’ sack is at the top. What a game, what a sack, what a win.

The final: 30-23 Ohio State
