New week, same rank.

This is what everybody has been waiting for. The Ohio State Buckeyes are coming off of an amazing 30-27 victory over the Michigan Wolverines in Columbus, a double-overtime thriller. The win allowed the Buckeyes to hold onto their No. 2 ranking in the latest College Football Playoff rankings.

Alabama, per usual, remained at No. 1 after remaining undefeated with their victory in the Iron Bowl over Auburn.

The Buckeyes have done all they can do, and will now have to wait for conference championship games to take place, but they appear to have done a good job in putting themselves in the best position possible considering the circumstances.

Here’s the complete Top 25:

The Aussie is the first player from Ohio State to win the Big Ten award.

Ohio State senior punter Cam Johnston has been name the Eddleman-Fields Punter of the Year for the Big Ten Conference. The native Australian has been a big help to a struggling offense this season, with the ability to pin teams back to the 1-yard line consistently and often leading the conference in punting distance and averages.

He leads the Big Ten in 2016 for longest punt (70 yards) against Wisconsin -- narrowly missing his career long (73 yards) from the 2014 national championship season. In addition to holding the conference’s longest punt of the season, Johnston also claims the top two spots for punting average in 2016 against Wisconsin (53.8 yards) and Tulsa (51.2 yards).

In his four years at Ohio State, the red-head has punted for 9,135 yards on 204 attempts. His senior campaign concluded with 2,266 punting yards despite having two games (Rutgers and Nebraska) in which he and his golden foot weren’t needed.

The Eddleman-Fields Punter of the Year award was first presented in 2011, and is named in honor of Illinois' Dwight Eddleman and Michigan State's Brandon Fields. Johnston is the first player from Ohio State to win this award.

Last year’s winner was the late-Sam Foltz, who was honored by Ohio State and Johnston — who presented Foltz’ parents with a Buckeye helmet adorned with 27 leaf stickers — in this year’s game against Nebraska.

Marshon Lattimore gets a first team nod by the coaches.

With the Big Ten's defensive lineman of the year already in the fold in Tyquan Lewis, Ohio State reeled in more high praise from the league’s media Tuesday evening.

Joining Lewis on the 2016 All-Big Ten conference team are junior linebacker (and captain) Raekwon McMillan as well as safety Malik Hooker. Corner Marshon Lattimore was named to the all-conference first team by the coaches.

Lattimore was all-conference second team by the media while corner Gareon Conley was all second team by the coaches, and a third-team selection by the media panel.

Joining Conley for third-team honors were kicker Tyler Durbin, the Big Ten’s leader in scoring and kick scoring, who was named by both panels. Parris Campbell was also named to the third-team by coaches

Hooker was snubbed for the conference’s defensive player of the year award which instead went to Michigan’s Jabrill Peppers. The Ohio State safety recorded three interceptions for touchdowns on the season, having six total picks on the season. He would have had four, but one was called back for a block in the back.

Peppers was also the conference’s linebacker of the year over the likes of McMillan and more established, experienced linebackers at Wisconsin and Penn State. McMillan had 37 solo tackles, and 87 total tackles on the season, five of which went for loss, and one, a sack. Despite not padding the stats sheet, he had a great season quarterbacking the defense.

Michigan corner Jourdan Lewis was a worthy recipient at Big Ten defensive back of the year.

Honorable mentions included linebacker Jerome Baker, defensive tackle Michael Hill, defensive ends Jalyn Holmes and Sam Hubbard, as well as defensive backs Denzel Ward and Damon Webb.

Senior linebacker and captain Joe Burger was named the Big Ten’s sportsmanship award honoree.

While there’s always nitpicking about the specific awards and the order of the all-conference awards, with so many Buckeyes scattered throughout the conference’s media and coaches’ All-Conference team, it’s pretty easy to see how they shared the Big Ten East division crown and could be well on their way to a College Football Playoff berth.

Lewis was also named unanimously first team All-Big Ten by the Coaches and the Media.

A year after leading Ohio State in sacks but not getting the glory due to a stud named Joey Bosa, Tyquan Lewis is finally getting his name in the lights.

The Rushmen’s leader by example on the field was named the Big Ten’s 2016 Smith-Brown Defensive Lineman of the Year on Tuesday, ascending to an echelon of all-time great B1G linemen.

The North Carolina product’s added 7.5 sacks to a stellar 2015 and continues to wreak havoc on opposing quarterbacks game in-game out.

With a potential move to the pros on the horizon after Lewis and the Buckeyes’ run is finally over, the best may be yet to come for the stellar defensive lineman.

Congrats to Lewis on a phenomenal season (and career) with Ohio State.

Hard not to love the professor after that comment.

It’ll take a long time for the wounds, literal and otherwise, to heal around the Ohio State community. But if any campus is equipped to band together and move beyond the tragic events of November 28, 2016, it’s Ohio State’s.

On Tuesday, not even a day after being slashed by the perpetrator of the attacks, OSU professor William Clark said as he recovered from being clipped by a car and slashed near his ankles the following which will put a smile on any Buckeyes face:

"We're a great university, we still beat Michigan," says OSU Professor William Clark, a victim in Monday's knife attack.

— WHIOTV (@whiotv) November 29, 2016

No one’s prouder of Ohio State than the great students and educators who make up the university. Where cynicism and woe could’ve easily (and beyond understandably) been the overwhelming sentiment Clark felt, he instead elected to preach a dogma that the attack doesn’t define the school’s over 50,000 students.

The next step in the healing process is proving professor Clark right.

The university is holding a #BuckeyeStrong gathering this evening at 7 p.m. at St John Arena for those able to attend:

Together, we are #BuckeyeStrong. Please join us tonight as we gather to listen, learn and heal as a community. Info: https://t.co/xtZ7b9qljm pic.twitter.com/KinlBjg14p

We drink the Wolverines’ tears on our newest podcast.

What a time to be alive. Ohio State’s crazy, 30-27 comeback victory over Michigan not only gives them a sterling 12-1 regular season record, but also five straight wins against the Wolverines, and puts them in prime position to make their second College Football Playoff appearance in three years. It was the perfect game to mirror Ohio State’s season of ups and downs, and an incredible way to end a year that started with so many question marks.

(It’s also a win you can document by reminding your Michigan friends that actually, the spot was good)

For Michigan, the game represents a missed opportunity. The Wolverines will be kicking themselves for not only bungling a game that they had an inordinate amount of chances to win, but also for it probably costing them a shot at the playoff. It may have also been their best chance to win The Game for the foreseeable future.

Michigan is expected to lose a ton of talent to the NFL, and it stands to reason that they won’t be as dominant next season, especially given the losses on defense. They also play a tough schedule, with a neutral site game against Florida, and road trips to Penn State and Wisconsin. Will they be able to reload enough for those teams, and beat an experienced Ohio State to close out the season?

On this episode of The Hangout in the Holyland, Matt Brown and Colton Denning are back to discuss when they think the Wolverines will actually beat the Buckeyes, and why it may not be for a while. Of course, they also talk about all the crazy stuff that happened in Saturday’s game, including:

  • Why Michigan’s bitter response to the loss has been hilarious for us, but demeans the season they had
  • When they thought Ohio State might actually win
  • Giving props to the defense and J.T. Barrett
  • Being at peace with the season
  • Michigan’s best season in a decade being a third place finish in the Big Ten East (people forget that)

They also discuss why the 2016 season was a huge success, their level of confidence in the Buckeyes earning a playoff invite, and debate whether they can win a game if they get in.

You can find the podcast on our iTunes page, and we strongly encourage reviews, comments, criticisms, etc. to help us deliver the best possible audio product. The more we hear from you, the better we can make it. We’re also on Soundcloud, the SB Nation podcast page, and you can subscribe via RSS on your Android and Windows Phone devices here.

Despite an up-and-down performance from the offense, the quarterback’s legs won them the football game.

It wasn’t pretty. J.T. Barrett had a roller coaster of a football game with the highest of highs and lowest of lows, but it was enough to defeat the No. 2 scoring defense in the country.

The offense looked to be in complete disarray throughout the afternoon, with an handful of three-and-outs and an anemic passing game. Although Barrett’s numbers were not up to par, his supporting cast did not help him out. The offensive line got worked by one of the best defensive lines in the country and the receivers continued to be non-existent against a legitimate secondary.

Let’s get to the tape:

Since the Penn State offensive line debacle, there was great improvement across the board. Unfortunately, it looks like the improvement was based on their superior talent over Northwestern, Nebraska, Maryland and Michigan State. In those four games, the offensive line allowed only 22 total pressures and five sacks. In the two games versus Penn State and Michigan — two of the better defenses in the conference — the offensive line has been terrible. They allowed a combined 44 pressures and 14 sacks against those two squads. A potential matchup with Alabama’s ferocious defensive line should give Barrett nightmares.

Not only was the offensive line play subpar, but the receivers just cannot gain separation against real secondaries. The few times Barrett was able to get time, he sat in the pocket waiting for a member of #Zone6 to get open, and he was either forced to throw the ball away or tuck and scramble. The wideouts have been consistently inconsistent throughout the season and it will only be more apparent against the better secondaries in potential College Football Playoff matchups. It’s a giant mystery as to why this unit has regressed since last season — and it’s tough to see why without All-22 access. It’s definitely not a talent issue and receiver coach Zach Smith has quite the Ohio State to NFL resume since he’s been in Columbus. It’s tough to imagine an improvement in this department before the season concludes, so it’s best to hope that this group does not cost them a chance at winning a national title.

Although it looked like the Wolverine defense was gassed in the fourth quarter — which allowed Barrett to find open receivers -- the game was won on his legs. They designed 15 runs for him, which is about the average this season and he was forced to scramble on seven dropbacks. If the sack yardage was subtracted from Barrett’s total rushing yardage, he would have rushed for 157 yards on 22 carries — which is excellent. Besides the 4th-and-1 conversion, Barrett’s best play came on his 41-yard scamper that set up a potential game tying field goal.

If they were able to convert on this drive, this play would have gone down in Ohio State- Michigan history:

Before the snap, Jabrill Peppers and the free safety had massive confusion. It looks as though Michigan wanted Peppers’ athleticism at free safety when Ohio State went to an empty set — which usually results in a designed quarterback draw. Michigan left the middle of the field wide open, which is an automatic run check for Barrett.

Screenshot_112916_110239_AM.jpg

Barrett hesitates, while the receivers do a good job of selling their pass routes. Barrett then tucks the football and follows Pat Elflein -- who only has Peppers to block.

Screenshot_112916_110735_AM.jpg

Elflein gets a hand on Peppers and Barrett cuts to the right of the Michigan defender. He throws a stiff arm on Peppers and continues to out run Michigan’s most elite athlete for 30-plus yards.

Screenshot_112916_110847_AM.jpg

Barrett finally gets shoved out of bounds at Michigan’s 20 — which should have led to a game tying field goal and an eventual regulation victory. The tempo and Barrett’s awareness set up this fantastic play that took advantage of a tired and confused Michigan defense.

Screenshot_112916_110954_AM.jpg

Even with the offensive line and wide receiver struggles, the combination of Mike Weber’s ability to move the chains in short yardage, Curtis Samuel’s big play ability and Barrett’s smarts will always give Ohio State a chance to win any game they’re in. Hopefully they get a chance to prove themselves in the playoff.

Youre right I believe it was Maryland. I was thinking he came in at Mike. I agree he can fly but my memory had him playing Mike that day. Of course my memory also had him playing against corn so I may be wrong too. I know he was great though, that I am sure I remember correctly.
Fell in love with his game watching his recruiting vid. Can't wait to see him get tons of PT here regardless of where.
