Ohio State will look to its brightest star in college football’s biggest game

Careers are made. Legends are born.

It’s a message that Urban Meyer distributes to his team before every season, a reminder of the responsibility that comes with playing at a program like Ohio State, and the opportunity afforded to those that embrace it.

There is perhaps not a program in the country better at providing its players with a platform to transform from unknown commodity to local legend over the course of one game. And that holds especially true for this game. The Game.

No one celebrates John Cooper for his 111 wins while coaching at Ohio State. We instead bemoan his 13 losses against the University of Michigan. You probably can’t recall one of Anthony Gonzalez’s 13 career touchdown catches, but his game-sealing snag in Ann Arbor back in 2005 is a memory that still burns bright today.

Ohio State and Michigan have been at each others throats since 1987, competing in a rivalry that predates the first World Series by six years. Even so, the upcoming 113th iteration of The Game is still unique in its magnitude.

Not since Woody and Bo stalked the sidelines has this rivalry featured two coaches quite like this. Meyer and Jim Harbaugh’s knack for winning big with bigger personas should lead to a redux of the Ten Year War, in intensity and import, if not in duration. Last year’s shellacking in the Big House was merely a cleansing of the palette, as Harbaugh built his roster and we moved past an era in which contests weren’t consequential for both sides. Now that the programs are on relatively similar footing, The Game should decide the Big Ten Title, and likely much more, for the foreseeable future.

This regional conflict last captivated the nation in this way 10 years ago, when the rivalry featured the No. 1 and No. 2 teams in the country for the first and only time, in what was considered then to be the Game of the Century. We celebrate Troy Smith less for winning the Heisman Trophy that year, and more for delivering a truly signature performance on that grand stage along the way.

With Ohio State and Michigan entering Saturday’s match at No. 2 and No. 3 in the rankings respectively, and a trip to the College Football Playoff hanging in the balance, the table is set for someone to rise up and become a legend. Ohio State’s best bet will be for Curtis Samuel to seize that opportunity like Smith did in 2006.

This season, Samuel has morphed from a flash in the pan backup to Ohio State’s best and most dynamic playmaker offensively. The junior from Brooklyn has accounted for 791 yards receiving, 650 yards rushing and 14 total touchdowns. He’s averaging a first down every time he touches the ball, and he’s touched the ball 145 times! For as celebrated as Percy Harvin was as an H-back under Meyer at Florida, Samuel might be even better, and he’s creating a new mold for that all-important role.

Still, he’s been relatively under-appreciated nationally to this point, seldom being discussed as a Heisman contender. That could change this weekend.

For much of the season it’s been assumed that college football’s most prestigious individual award would be handed to Lamar Jackson, the quarterback from Louisville. The rangy sophomore has displayed jaw-dropping athleticism to accompany unparalleled stats, trivializing the Heisman conversation through early November.

That changed a bit last Thursday, when Jackson and his Cardinals faltered terribly on national television against Houston. The Louisville quarterback is still considered the leader in the clubhouse, if only for a lack of a true competitor. Heisman trophies are not typically awarded to leaders that lose so handily with the country watching this late in the year.

With that said, there’s not a quarterback in the country with the stats to threaten Jackson for any award. Nor is there a running back or receiver on a prominent team getting much consideration. This dearth of legitimate Heisman contenders from traditional positions has shifted the narrative to an athlete who is utilized in an unconventional way, in Michigan’s do-it-all defender Jabrill Peppers.

On paper, it’s curious to see Peppers listed as Bovada’s favorite to usurp Jackson as the Heisman front runner. He might not be the best defensive player on his team, let alone in the country. Sure, he contributes in every phase of the game, but what does he do with those opportunities? The three-way sensation has scored just three touchdowns in his career. He’s never returned a kick for a touchdown. He’s never intercepted a pass.

It doesn’t hurt that Peppers wears the same Maize and Blue winged helmet that was donned 20 years ago by Charles Woodson, the only primarily defensive player to ever win the Heisman. Woodson was an excellent cornerback, but he too made his mark as a three-phase player, catching one touchdown and returning a punt for another against the No. 4 Buckeyes to lead No. 1 Michigan to a six-point win in 1997. A few weeks later he was awarded the Heisman Trophy over Peyton Manning, the presumed favorite. Manning had the stats but Woodson had the flash, thanks to some key moments on The Game’s massive stage.

Of course, Peppers is capable of doing the same this weekend, and Harbaugh won’t hold any punches against the Buckeyes. Peppers received more touches against Ohio State last season than he did against any other opponent, a trend that’s bound to repeat itself.

But Peppers’ presence also provides a vaunted obstacle for Samuel to overcome. The Wolverines primarily play man defense, and when Samuel is lined up in the slot, it will be Peppers that he’s facing in a battle of best-on-best. When he attempts to bounce a run to the perimeter, it will be Peppers he meets near the line of scrimmage, one missed tackle away from breaking loose for a big play. As a clash of two titans rages on around them, this individual matchup serves as a microcosm for the game at hand.

Samuel has thrived in these situations this year, and Ohio State will need him to play one of his best games against a Michigan team that ranks first in the country in total defense. When the Buckeyes have struggled on offense this year, its been attributed in part to their inability to get the ball to their best playmaker, due to either poor play calling or execution.

Like Harbaugh with Peppers, Meyer won’t hold anything back with his most explosive weapon this weekend. Ohio State will need Samuel to find open spaces in the secondary as a receiver, serving as a security blanket for the struggling J.T. Barrett. They’ll need Samuel to make the most of his perimeter runs, which have accounted for some of the Buckeyes longest plays this year, and creates room for the rest of the running game. As a return man, Samuel has the chance to break the game open in one touch, as so many others have done in this storied series.

Every moment of heroism for Samuel will come in contrast to and at the expense of Jabrill Peppers and his hype. Every individual clash serves as an opportunity for Samuel to build his own narrative as college football’s versatile star who most spectacularly attacks the game in an unconventional way. And maybe that will be enough for the junior H-back to receive the national recognition he deserves, as Heisman voters turn to this do-it-all talent performing on the game’s biggest stage, like Woodson and Smith did before him.

Even if not, these individual awards are just ornaments next to a pair of gold pants earned from winning The Game of games, where legends are born and history is made.

Our latest podcast discusses that, and all things Ohio State/Michigan.

Despite having one of the least experienced rosters in the country heading into the season, the Ohio State Buckeyes are No. 2 in the College Football Playoff rankings heading into this week’s season finale against the No. 3 Michigan Wolverines.

In what looks like the most exciting version of The Game since 2006, both have everything at stake and can’t afford another loss if they hope to make the Big Ten Championship Game, or the playoff. While the Buckeyes don’t control their own conference destiny, a third top-ten win would be an emphatic statement to the selection committee, and at the very least, give them an excellent case to make their second playoff appearance in three years.

For Michigan, a win would not only give them their first in the rivalry since 2011, but would also send them to Indianapolis for the first time, with a likely spot in the playoff on the line. So, with everything at stake, who is under more pressure to win on Saturday?

On this episode of The Hangout in the Holyland, Matt Brown and Colton Denning discuss why they think the answer is Michigan, This season being the Wolverines’ best shot at a Big Ten title —and more— for a few years, and how people will view Jim Harbaugh if he loses his first two games against the Buckeyes. They also discuss whether Ohio State’s season is already a successful one, regardless of the outcome. In addition to that take, which surely will upset people on both sides, they break down The Game from all angles, including:

  • Reminiscing about the 2006 matchup, and whether Saturday’s game can be just as good.
  • The odd situation Matt found himself in during the game.
  • The standouts of this season’s small senior class, and why Cam Johnston will be sorely missed.
  • Discussing which underclassmen are most likely to head to the NFL.
  • What J.T. Barrett’s legacy will be at Ohio State, and the possibility of him declaring for the NFL draft.

With the final regular season showdown, the Buckeyes stick with their normal lineup.

depth_chart_week_12_page_001.jpg

With Michigan State standing in the way of Ohio State’s game against Michigan, the Buckeyes struggled to get past the Spartans on the road. Urban Meyer’s squad eventually pulled out a 17-16 win, setting up an epic showdown with Ohio State’s arch-rival in the Wolverines that could potentially be the last game for the Buckeyes before the bowl game season is upon them if Penn State wins out and takes the Big Ten championship game spot from the East division. Let’s see how the depth chart is looking this week.

J.T. Barrett is the starting quarterback and will be for the entirety of the season, barring injury. Barrett was struggling with inconsistent throws against the Spartans, throwing for just 86 yards and one touchdowns on 10-of-22 passing. Weather might have played a factor, though he also rushed for 105 yards on 24 carries. Joe Burrow remains the backup.

At running back, Mike Weber remains the starter with OR in between he and Samuel. Despite a lingering shoulder injury, Weber eclipsed the 1,000-yard mark on the season as he rushed for 111 yards on only 14 carries with an average of 7.9 yards per carry and added a touchdown. Samuel added four carries on the ground and amassed 13 yards. Both of them will have to be at their best against Michigan if the Buckeyes are to be successful.

The starters are the same as in previous weeks, as the receiving core continues its growth. Noah Brown starts at X, K.J Hill OR Corey Smith OR Johnnie Dixon all slotted for the third wide receiver spot, and Terry McLaurin OR James Clark at Z. Austin Mack and Binjimen Victor are the third-string options. Only five different players caught passes on Saturday, with Parris Campbell having perhaps the biggest day among the receivers, with only two receptions for 12 yards. No receiver caught a touchdown against the Spartans.

The H-back spot remains with Curtis Samuel OR Dontre Wilson. Samuel continues to be one of the more electrifying players in the country, but wasn’t quite as explosive against Michigan State. Samuel rushed for 13 yards on four carries and also hauled in four receptions for 40 yards and a touchdown. Wilson surprisingly didn’t touch the ball against the Spartans on Saturday.

The tight end spot is firmly locked down by Marcus Baugh with A.J. Alexander listed as the backup. Baugh caught two passes on Saturday for 20 yards but was mostly quiet beyond that.

The offensive line starters are listed as Jamarco Jones, Michael Jordan, Pat Elflein, Billy Price, and Isaiah Prince (from left to right). The offensive line continues their improvement with several good games coming from them in a row. If there was ever a time to be at the top of their game, this next game would be perfect timing.

On the defensive side of the ball, Sam Hubbard OR Jayln Holmes and Tyquan Lewis remain listed as the defensive end starters. The backups at defensive end are Nick Bosa OR Jonathon Cooper. In the middle, Michael Hill anchors the defensive line alongside Dre’Mont Jones who replaced Tracy Sprinkle and Davon Hamilton is listed as the co-starter with Jones.

The linebacking core continues to be a strong unit. Raekwon McMillan is still slotted in at middle linebacker. Surrounding him are outside linebackers Chris Worley and Dante Booker OR Jerome Baker. Booker suffered a slight MCL sprain early on against Bowling Green and a combination of Joe Burger and Jerome Baker have stepped in very well in his place. Rashod Berry, Joe Burger, and Craig Fada are your backups. Baker has been the one to fill in for Booker most of all season, and has played well.

At cornerback, Gareon Conley is the starter on one end and Marshon Lattimore OR Denzel Ward on the other for the second corner spot. For safeties, Damon Webb slides over this season with Malik Hooker getting the other safety spot. Erick Smith is listed as the backup to Hooker, while Jordan Fuller is the backup to Webb. The secondary had another solid defensive performance stepping up in clutch moments. Gareon Conley had the game sealing interception at the end of the game.

For special teams, sophomore walk-on Tyler Durbin continues to be the starter at kicker for both kickoffs and field goals as Sean Nuernberger recovers from a groin injury that forced him to miss most of camp. Durbin connected on both of his extra points against Michigan State, and knocked in a field goal from 39 yards out.

Senior Cameron Johnston remains as the punter, and that’s no surprise considering he’s been a mainstay since his freshman season and has done a tremendous job. Johnston had seven punts for an average of 41.6 yards.

At punt return, Curtis Samuel OR K.J. Hill take over after Dontre Wilson’s struggles. Handling kickoff returns will be Parris Campbell OR Dontre Wilson. The long-snapping duties are given to Liam McCollough, and holding for kicks is Cameron Johnston.

Wilson is back for his final regular season game as a Buckeye.

Urban Meyer was on the Big Ten coaches teleconference Tuesday and announced that Dontre Wilson has been cleared to play on Saturday against Michigan. This will be Wilson’s last regular season game as a Buckeye, and is hoping to add to his 26 receptions for 343 yards and six total touchdowns this year. The versatile offensive weapon has battled injuries for most of his career, but will at least be able to finish out his senior campaign at home the right way.

Wilson, despite some inconsistencies, has also contributed on kick and punt returns. Fumbles on the latter ultimately cost him that role.

Meyer also noted that transfer wide receiver Corey Smith “might play” against the Wolverines. The head coach also discussed the ever pressing importance of Michigan week, to which he replied, “It’s a year-round preparation. It’s something we take very seriously.”

The weather was also a factor that limited the Ohio State passing game.

When Ohio State fans saw the East Lansing weather report for Saturday afternoon, they knew the offense would take a big step back from the prior two 62-point performances. After throwing the ball a combined 65 times against Nebraska and Maryland, Ohio State QB J.T. Barrett completed only 10 of 22 passes for 86 yards against Michigan State.

With the wind howling and the precipitation falling from the sky, it turned the offense one-dimensional, which allowed Mark Dantonio’s defense to stack the box and focus on stopping Barrett and Mike Weber in the run game. It resulted in only 17 points for the Buckeyes.

For as bad as the box score looked, fans should not expect the offense to curl up into it’s shell against Michigan. Even though Barrett only attempted 22 passes and looked inaccurate at times, it was not overly conservative.

The offensive line has been the story the past two weeks, but they weren’t asked to do much in pass protection on Saturday. They allowed eight pressures on 25 dropbacks — which isn’t ideal — and three sacks. After bouncing back since the Penn State disaster, right tackle Isaiah Prince had another rough game, allowing two of those three sacks.

Since allowing 26 pressures and six sacks against the Nittany Lions, the offensive line has allowed only 22 pressures and five sacks in the following four games. Michigan’s front seven will be their greatest test of the season and 'The Slobs’ seem to be hitting their stride at the appropriate time.

With the weather being very Big Ten, everyone knew we would be getting a ton of Barrett in the run game — and we did. Barrett’s name was called 21 times to run the ball and he responded pretty well, gaining positive yardage throughout the afternoon. Even though the number was the highest of the season, the designed runs were not as forced as we’ve become accustomed to and they were in the flow of the offense. If the wind holds up on Saturday, expect this number to fall in between the 13-16 mark, which should result in a victory.

One major question mark that Barrett will have to improve — and improve fast — will be his accuracy. Not only has the quarterback had trouble completing the deep ball to open receivers, but it has now leaked into the short to intermediate game. Barrett threw one of the worst passes of the season, missing a wide-open Samuel in the flat by a couple of yards. It almost looked like a 2-2 breaking ball thrown in the dirt. Even though the passing game wasn’t great, Michigan State’s was even worse. Let’s chalk this up to the weather and we’ll reevaluate it after ‘The Game’, when they face the stingiest secondary in the conference.

Play action will always be key for the Ohio State passing offense, and they connected on another big play to Samuel in the seam. When they’re able to run the ball effectively, the safeties begin to bite on the run fake, leaving the middle of the field open. One thing that was also notable during the game, was the amount of times Barrett took a step forward, basically running a designed quarterback play action and then dropping back to pass. It was a nice wrinkle to the passing game.

On this touchdown toss to Samuel, Barrett faked the handoff to Weber, which sucked in the safety — leaving the middle of the field open — and stopping the feet of the defender covering Samuel in the seam.

11_22_2016_11_27_58_AM.jpg

Because the defender stopped his feet, he allowed Samuel to gain inside leverage. With the safety (No. 9) sucked in, there was a hole in the middle of the defense.

11_22_2016_11_31_17_AM.jpg

Samuel used his speed and Barrett lofted a perfectly placed ball for six — due to play action.
