Cass Tech grads will meet on Saturday.

“For years, the Michigan-Ohio State player rivalry split friends only when Ohio players came to play for the Wolverines.”

- Mark Snyder, Detroit Free Press

Urban Meyer has undoubtedly brought a new flavor since his arrival in Columbus. One of the big changes he made, was heavily recruiting the state of Michigan, something that wasn’t done at quite the rate that Meyer does in the past. The proof of this is in the current roster, with Ohio State represented well by Cass Tech in Mike Weber, Damon Webb, and Josh Alabi. Typically, we’d see Ohio players going to play up north, but that’s changed, and it’s paying off for the Buckeyes. Weber in particular is friends with Jourdan Lewis, one of the best players Michigan has to offer.

“I know him very well. We all grew up together,” Lewis told Snyder. “Played Little League, we all knew each other. Really, it’s just a testament to his athletic ability. He’s a very tough runner, we all see that, very skilled. Can get out of cuts and stuff like that, breaking tackles. He’s just a spectacular athlete.” Lewis is right about that. Weber has over 1,000 yards as a freshman, which has only been done by Robert Smith and Maurice Clarett. That’s pretty dang good company.

“Ohio State felt as if it got some good news last week when College Football Playoff chairman Kirby Hocutt said that conference championships are one of four metrics used to separate two teams that are comparable.”

- Ari Wasserman, Northeast Ohio Media Group

The Ohio State Buckeyes remained in their No. 2 ranking in the latest College Football Playoff rankings on Tuesday, which was great news for the Buckeyes for a number of reasons. Chairman Kirby Hocutt’s comments were a large part of that. "Does the selection committee see a small margin of separation between No. 2 Ohio State and No. 7 Penn State? We do not," Hocutt said, via Wasserman. "At this point in time, Michigan at three, Clemson at four, Washington at five, there is a small separation between those teams there."

That’s great, because that means despite possibly having a better resume and a conference championship down the line, the committee still favors Ohio State. And that’s a considerable margin between Ohio State and Penn State. This has to lead us to believe that as long as Ohio State comes out on top over Michigan on Saturday, their spot is secure in the playoff, whether or not they make it to the Big Ten Championship game or not. At the very least, it’s good that the committee appears to have given Ohio State the benefit of the doubt after a close 17-16 game against Michigan State. Hocutt said, "We were obviously aware of the conditions in which that game was played in, but continue to be very impressed with Ohio State." That’s all the Buckeyes need.

“Ohio State is having another enormous recruiting showcase for its home game vs. Michigan on Saturday, and Urban Meyer is going to have a royal guest.”

- Ari Wasserman, Northeast Ohio Media Group

The Game is the marquee game of the season, and this time around, it’s essentially a play-in game for the College Football Playoff. Games like these always bring the stars out, and Saturday won’t be any different. LeBron James and his Cleveland Cavaliers teammates are expected to be on hand, in a very similar fashion to what they did for the Cleveland Indians while they were on their World Series run. Hopefully for the Buckeyes, there’s a better end result.

The Buckeyes will reportedly be wearing special LeBron James cleats for the game. This would be an interesting rebuttal to Michigan’s recent partnership with Jordan Brand. But at the end of the day, all that matters is what goes on between the sidelines, and hopefully the Buckeyes will be able to persevere just as they did last season impressively.

“The stadium was so bad that government officials didn’t really want the stadium used.”

- Tom Knox, Columbus Business Journal

Ohio State and Michigan will be facing off in the ‘Shoe on Saturday for one of the biggest games in the rivalry’s history. Ohio Stadium is considered one of the best in college football, not just because of it’s seating capacity, but its prestige as well. It was built in 1922, and so there’s been work that’s needed to get done to keep it up to date. Gene Smith’s predecessor, Andy Geiger, told the Columbus Business Journal that he was “stunned” by the “really poor condition” of the stadium when he arrived in 1994.

“It was substandard,” Geiger said in 2005. “Paul Krebs, then associate athletic director, and others came to me and said, ‘We have a real problem getting the city and the county to let us use our own stadium each year because it’s so far below code requirements.'” Geiger noticed that major renovations had been put off in the past, and decided that it finally had to happen. “I said, ‘This is going to become truly a nightmare, when we have all these obligations to play these football games and it’s the economic center of the athletic program, and it’s awful,'” Geiger said. He was able to get a project funded, and renovations were completed in 2001.

Brick killed a guy!

A big hit and a normal tackle may show up the same in the box score, but let’s be honest: who doesn’t love seeing some devastating hits? While safety is certainly the No. 1 priority, football has and will always be a violent sport that produces some spectacular collisions.

Seahawks’ safety Kam Chancellor is no stranger to laying the lumber. He provided one of the best explanations I’ve ever heard regarding what makes a big hit so special:

“Just the ferociousness ... the velocity, the power, the contact. I just like … it’s hard to explain. I just like that feeling of being aggressive, in control, instilling your will.”

The Buckeyes have dished out plenty of big hits this season, but there’s always been something special about the way they hit when TTUN comes to town. Let’s take a look at five of the biggest examples of Buckeye on Wolverine crime from the past 10 years.

It’s never a good idea to throw into three-time consensus All-American James Laurinaitis’ territory.

As far as individual accolades are concerned, Laurinaitis has a real case as the best linebacker to ever suit up for the Scarlet and Gray. His ability to roam sideline-to-sideline and also cover downfield made him a vital cog in the middle of several great Ohio State defenses. Laurinaitis’ range and athleticism allowed him to be used in coverage downfield, which made for some fantastic collisions when slot receivers decided to come his way:

Adrian Arrington had a productive career with the Wolverines, but the greatest thing he ever did was hold on to this pass. Not only did he manage to keep his head on his shoulders, but he held on to the ball as well. With Ohio state up by 11 late in the 2006 version of The Game, Laurinaitis was happy to patrol the deep middle of the field during the Wolverines’ comeback attempt, and he was rewarded with arguably the biggest hit of his fantastic career.

Vernon Gholston may have not had a great NFL career, but man could he hit Chad Henne hard.

Gholston was unblockable during the Buckeyes’ 2007 win over the Wolverines. He picked up three sacks and consistently won his battle against future No. 1 overall pick Jake Long. None of his sacks were more impressive than when he sent Henne flying back towards his own end zone:

Typically quarterbacks recognize an incoming rusher and have the ability to protect themselves, but most defensive linemen don’t run sub 4.7-second 40-yard dashes. After mistakenly being left with a free path to Henne, Gholston makes the most of his free shot and easily knocks Henne to the turf. What a way to hand Henne his fourth and final loss to the Buckeyes.

Remember that dude who could jump over other dudes, Sam Mcguffie?

Mcguffie was an internet legend before his forgettable college career, as he is responsible for possibly the greatest hurdle in high school football history. Despite his incredible high school success, Mcguffie didn’t have the strength or durability to function as a three-down running back in the Big Ten. His hopes of becoming a versatile scat back with return capabilities were quickly dashed during the 2008 version of The Game:

After bobbling the kickoff, Mcguffie was eaten alive by Austin Spitler and Jamario O'Neal in what would end up being his final play for the Maize and Blue. Ohio State’s current set of piranhas on kickoff are more than capable of changing the momentum of a game at any moment, but this has been a characteristic of the unit for years. Unfortunately for Mcguffie, he became the lasting memory for what ended up being a 42-7 thrashing at the Horseshoe.

Always beware of Corey “crack-block” Smith.

Smith has just four receptions this season, though he’s still been a valuable blocker and gunner on special teams. The best stretch of his career came at a great time in 2014, as he consistently made big plays during each of the final four wins of the Buckeyes’ latest championship season. One such highlight came during The Game, and boy did it get the crowd going:

After collecting a short pass from J.T. Barrett, Nick Vannett turned up field and immediately saw Smith making his way over. After getting in front of the defender to avoid a clipping penalty, Smith decleats the Wolverine defender who had no idea the hit was coming. This play perfectly demonstrates why the phrase “keep your head on a swivel” exists, because look what happens if you don’t.

The Joey Bosa experience.

During a season filled with weekly sky-high expectations, Ohio State met them all on November 28, 2015. A devastating rushing attack allowed the Buckeyes’ offense to move the ball at will, while Bosa and company limited the Wolverines to just 13 points. Down multiple scores in the fourth quarter, Bosa ended the game on his own terms, taking Jake Ruddock on a ride straight to hell:

Not only did Bosa send his ex-high school quarterback to the sideline for the rest of the game, but he also proved in one play why he was the No. 3 pick in the 2015 NFL Draft. Despite the Wolverines bringing in an extra offensive lineman to deal with Bosa, he easily rips past the overwhelmed blocker and effectively ends the game.

Every football season is different, but a physical game has ensued every time Ohio State has lined up against TTUN. This year pits a battle between two top-five defenses that are not lacking for star power. Will Jabrill Peppers recover from his Ezekiel Elliott experience? Or will Raekwon McMillan make potentially his final game against TTUN a memorable one? We’ll find out this Saturday afternoon.

Ohio State’s J.T. Barrett may play his last game in Columbus this weekend. How will he be remembered?

One of the very best to ever play QB for Ohio State might have his final act in Columbus this weekend.

Lost in the hype and commotion surrounding The Game this weekend is the fact that the Buckeyes won’t just be facing their hated rival with a playoff bid and bragging rights on the line. This game, like it is every year, is the last chance to say goodbye.

With this being the final game of the regular season, this will be the last chance, short of the postseason, for many Buckeye players to suit up for the Scarlet and Gray. It’s the last chance to play in front of 100,000+ screaming Buckeye partisans in Columbus, the last chance to take part of the home-game traditions, and the last chance to hear the Victory Bell ring.

Thanks to a huge spate of NFL early entrants last year, this isn’t a very big senior class for Ohio State. That doesn’t mean that important Buckeyes won’t be saying goodbye on Saturday, as offensive line stalwart Pat Elflein, punter extraordinaire Cameron Johnston, and H-back and wideout Dontre Wilson finish their eligibility. They will all be missed, and should be celebrated.

But the real drama may come from the next batch of Buckeyes who may leave early for the NFL. Some of those names, like defensive back Gareon Conley and linebacker Raekwon McMillan, are almost certain to leave, as they are projected to be near the top of their position groups for the NFL Draft. But there are a few others could go either way.

Perhaps the most intriguing? Quarterback J.T. Barrett.

Barrett isn’t projected to be a high level NFL prospect at this point, or even necessarily a very good one. He’s not listed in the top 10 QB prospects by Sports Illustrated. He’s listed as the 17th QB prospect by Walter Football. Concerns about his arm strength and ability as a pocket passer prevent him from rising in these rankings, and it seems unlikely Barrett would be higher than a 5th or 6th round draft pick, at this point.

But would playing a fifth year of college football change any of that? Barrett is who he is at this point, and another year at Ohio State won’t make him any bigger, and probably won’t make his arm dramatically stronger either. He’s already demonstrated he’s an exceptionally productive college quarterback, helped lead his team to a national title, and has them on the cusp of a playoff bid for the second time in three seasons. What else does he have to prove?

Barrett owns nearly every passing record of note for Ohio State. All time leader for career passing touchdowns? Got it. Ohio State’s career total touchdown record, held by Braxton Miller? Broke that too. Big Ten honors? Barrett won the freshman of the week award so many times they might as well have named it after him, and he’s been a regular on the award’s sheet ever since.

I don’t know what Barrett is going to do. When asked about it earlier this week, Barrett said he hadn’t thought about it, saying “I’m just taking each week and trying to focus, live in the moment. My mind, it ain’t even got there.” I can’t even really speculate at to what Barrett should do.

But I do think that the chances that he leaves are less than zero. So now seems like as good a tiny as any to ask ourselves, what is J.T. Barrett’s legacy? How will he be remembered?

This isn’t scientific by any means, but I think few players have elicited more of a response in our Twitter mentions and on Facebook than Barrett. It’s true, Barrett has regressed from his exemplary performance in 2014. He’s completed fewer than 50% of his passes twice this year, including last week against Michigan State, and his YPA is a yard and a half less than it was in 2014. Apart from the spreadsheets, it’s clear to anybody who has watched Barrett that his touch on deep passes, or even many medium-length passes, has left something to be desired this season. If Ohio State’s offense has struggled at times this season, it is fair to point at least some of that blame on Barrett.

Of course, “some” blame shouldn’t be all of the blame. Barrett is throwing to a wideout group made nearly entirely of underclassmen who had no game experience before this season. He’s behind a young offensive line that has struggled a few times. He’s handing off to a freshman. And quarterbacks coach Tim Beck ... well, he isn’t Tom Herman.

But even with his failings, and his inability to live up to the exceptionally lofty expectations of this season, Barrett has still been really damn good. His elusiveness in the pocket is excellent, despite not having Braxton-Miller like raw speed or direction-changing ability. His decision making, both in running the read-option and in deciding where to throw the football, has been the tops in the Big Ten. His leadership has been lauded by Urban Meyer and players alike. And, hey, he’s thrown 24 touchdowns passes against just four interceptions this year. That’s really good!

I don’t know what folks will think about the Barrett era in say, a decade. He wasn’t the physical marvel of a Terrelle Pryor or a healthy Braxton Miller. Even when Barrett managed to break an explosive run, he didn’t always look explosive, you know?

Barrett didn’t put up the crazy passing numbers from other peers in college football. He went over 300 yards passing just four times, and only once since 2014. And after that 2014 run that vaulted him into the Heisman top five, he never reached that level again. After getting Heisman hype to start this season, Barrett may not even finish in the top ten.

But despite that, Barrett was the triggerman for some of the most successful Ohio State teams in history. He helped pilot the program to a national title. He’s beaten Michigan twice, and has a chance to do it again on Saturday. And you don’t become the touchdown leader at a place like Ohio State, with a year of eligibility left to spare, without being an excellent quarterback.

Barrett hasn’t always wowed. But he’s done virtually everything you need to do to be a great Ohio State quarterback very well. And, regardless of what happens this weekend, or after, he should be remembered as such: as one of the very best quarterbacks to ever play for Ohio State.

Hopefully, Buckeye fans get another year of Barrett. But if they don’t, they should treasure him this weekend. He might not have ended up as exactly what we thought he might be a few years ago, but he may have been exactly what Ohio State needed.

Are the Buckeyes trying to tap into that Cleveland magic?

As first surfaced by Land of 10’s Jeremy Birmingham, a Snapchat from Ohio State senior wideout Corey Smith appears to show the wide receiver rocking some very flashy LeBron James cleats from his personal shoe line.

While OSU has certainly been the beneficiaries of a relationship with the King — he donated Beats headphones to the entire football during team during their national title run and has outfitted the basketball team for over a season now — aside from appearing at some marquee games, he’s never specifically contributed to the Buckeye football aesthetic. That might be changing this weekend.

Here’s a look at the Snapchat (which as snaps do, has since expired and vanished):

— Daniel Vollmer (@vollmer_dan) November 23, 2016

It’d seem curious for a team to switch something as critical as footwear just days before the biggest game of the entire season, so whether these are strictly for locker room/practice purposes or something deeper, we’ll have to wait and see. In the past, some NFL players have come out to warmups wearing custom cleats, only to change them just before kick. Others have tried new vanity footwear, only to change back at halftime after they proved less effective than their previous gear.

A Columbus area shoe store appears to be selling sneaker versions of the cleats rocked in Smith’s snap:

— Sole Classics (@SoleClassics) November 22, 2016

The latter photo appears a Twitter screenshot from the same place Smith’s Snapchat was taken. The plot thickens?

What say you? Will Ohio State try to one up Michigan’s Jumpman ties with some King James kicks? Or is this just all showsmanship in the great Nike arms race?

The Buckeyes hope to stay undefeated against their SWAC opponent.

Four games into the season, the Ohio State Buckeyes men’s basketball team finally unleashed a throttling of its non-conference opponent, having defeated the Western Carolina Catamounts by 28 points Monday night. Combined with a close-but-still-decisive win over Providence last week, the Buckeyes have finally seemed to have found a spark of offense that they seemed to lack for the entirety of last season.

Led by JaQuan Lyle and Jae’Sean Tate, the Buckeyes destroyed perhaps their worst statistical opponent of the season. Ohio State’s strong defensive play made up in many ways for poor shooting (Ohio State shot just under 42 percent from the floor), with the Buckeyes recorded 11 steals on the night, including eight in the first half alone. With Ohio State out-rebounding Western Carolina 44-33, even the 14 turnovers by the Buckeyes did not cause too much trouble in the matchup.

Ohio State now moves on to face Jackson State, who is sitting at 1-3 on the season, with losses to North Carolina Central, whom Ohio State defeated in their second game of the season, and Marshall, who is Ohio State’s next scheduled opponent Friday. This season, the Tigers have been one of the worst shooting teams in the NCAA, averaging 39.3 percent on field goals.

Monday was no exception for Jackson State. The Tigers had just 26 second half points in their loss to Marshall earlier in the week. With only eight points off the bench, Jackson State leaned heavily on guards Paris Collins and Edric Dennis, who combined for 41 of the team’s 61 points. The Tigers shot just 33.9 percent on the night, and under 29 percent from behind the arc. They also missed six of their 19 free throw attempts and committed 13 turnovers in the game.

Head coach Wayne Brent is in his fourth season with Jackson State, his first collegiate head coaching job. Previously an assistant at Ole Miss, Brent was part of the Rebels squad that went to the Sweet Sixteen in 2001. After going 11-20 and 11-21 in his first two seasons with the Tigers, Brent coached Jackson State to a breakout season last year with a 20-16 record--good enough for third place in the SWAC and the team’s first 20-win season since 2007. They just missed out on an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament after losing by a point in the finals of the SWAC Tournament, but won their first postseason game since 1993 with a win over Sam Houston State in the CollegeInsiders.com Tournament.

Numbers to know

9

Marc Loving—the only senior on the Ohio State roster—has made just nine field goals in four games played. Despite averaging 26.5 minutes per game, Loving has not been able to join the rest of his team as they find themselves on offense. Of course, in Loving’s case, he is not contributing much on defense either, with a dozen fouls on the season, four of which came by midway through the second half against Western Carolina.

280

Jackson State’s ranking, according to Ken Pomeroy’s ratings. While it is not as bad as Western Carolina’s at 322, it is indicative of the dichotomy of the Buckeyes’ out of conference schedule which includes both the likes of Youngstown State (253) and North Carolina Central (246), as well as Virginia (4) and UCLA (23). There are certainly more opponents ranked lower than the top-150 than higher on the out of conference slate, so the Buckeyes cannot afford to slip up the way they did last year against UT-Arlington and Louisiana Tech.

6/10

The rating teammate Kam Williams gave JaQuan Lyle’s dunk against Western Carolina Monday. Lyle’s athleticism has improved immensely since the end of last season—as exemplified by his huge dunk in the first half which put his team up 11. After dropping more than 10 pounds in the offseason, Lyle has shown improved performance on the court. He has also strung together two strong performances in a row against Providence and Western Carolina, perhaps showing that he has developed consistency which was lacking at times last season.

Cast of characters

Ohio State

Trevor Thompson

The junior center has yet to start a game this season for the Buckeyes, but he has still made his impact known on the court coming in behind true freshman Micah Potter. Scoring double-digits in all but one game, Thompson has racked up the highest field goal percentage on the team, shooting 68.2 percent from the field. And besides missing two free throws against Navy, he is perfect from the line on the season. Perhaps with the exception of Kam Williams, who started Monday, Thompson remains Ohio State’s strongest player off the bench.

JaQuan Lyle

All dunks aside, Lyle has put together two solid performances in the last week for the Buckeyes, and seems to be taking his role as point guard and de facto on-court leader very seriously. After starting the season shooting just 33 percent from the field (scoring only eight points total in two matchups), Lyle has stepped up and led the team in scoring against both Providence (21 points) and Western Carolina (17). His impact may be indicative of an early season trend: When Lyle has a good game, the Buckeyes have a good game.

Jackson State

Edric Dennis

The lone sophomore starter on the squad, the 6-foot-3 guard from Dallas is the Tigers’ leading scorer on the season, averaging 16.8 points per game and most recently dropping 20 in a losing effort against Marshall. After sitting the entirety of last season, Dennis has made an early impact on the Tigers’ roster, starting all four games and averaging a team-high 35 minutes per game. He also leads the team in assists, with 2.8 per game.

Janarius Middleton

The senior forward has already broken out somewhat this season, leading his team in rebounds with 8.6 per game after averaging just 5.1 last year. Against Marshall, Middleton recorded a season-high 11 rebounds for the Tigers. Despite his prowess down low, however, Middleton has been limited in his scoring, and was held to zero points against Marshall.

This year’s edition of The Game is the biggest since 2006.

In this, the golden era of the #take, there’s a tendency to overrate sports and what they mean. Players get likened to soldiers; games, to battles; rivalries often based on nothing more substantive than geography devolve into the ugliest sort of personal conduct imaginable.

But there’s another side to all this, the side that massively underrates what sports are, or perhaps what sports can be, when circumstances allow. Sports can be beautiful. They can be haunting. Occasionally, oh so occasionally, they can be transcendent.

This hints at the unsolvable contradictions that underlie football, that perfect paragon of American sports: a game that regularly features supernatural feats of grace and strength is also a grist mill that takes years of life away from those who play it at the highest levels. A game of extreme and incalculable violence is also one that tries to legislate out certain types of force but fails wholly to acknowledge others. Fame and glory and suffering and pain—on and off the field—are inextricably wrapped in each other in football, for good and for ill.

It’s fitting, then, that so much of this college football season—hurt and anguish and surprise and utter, transformative joy—will hinge on what will come on the regular season’s final Saturday. You’d be hard-put to script a better drama than what has unfolded in the Football Bowl Subdivision in 2016; for two teams in particular, a year’s hopes and dreams and visions of greatness will come down to three or so hours on the cold ground of Columbus, Ohio.

It had to be this way, didn’t it? These teams, these coaches, this crazy season? For all the drama of the last major iteration of the Ohio State-Michigan coaching rivalry, Tressel v. Carr always felt a bit like a pair of gentlemen playing chess. Let no one accuse them of being dispassionate; on the contrary, I suspect that there is little that either cared about more in those years than beating the other. But through the lens of history—and boy, do we relegate things to the past quicker than ever these days—there’s something that feels...quaint about that series of games. Football today doesn’t look like it did in 2002 or 2006. Hell, it doesn’t even look like it did in 2013.

Urban Meyer and Jim Harbaugh. A former madman, slightly reformed (or at least convincing us of as much) in the interests of his health; across the field, an unquestioned madman burning in the phoenix flame of his program’s rebirth. College football’s biggest regular-season stage paving the way for its biggest post-season stage.

SEC football might “just mean more,” but this game—The Game—means most.

Ohio State’s advantages

Late-game defensive play. All season, the Buckeyes have opened games sloppy on defense and, for the most part, finished them strong. Look no further than Ohio State’s quarter-by-quarter defensive S&P+ rankings for proof:

1st quarter: 27th

2nd quarter: 7th

3rd quarter: 2nd

4th quarter: 1st

If this game comes down to the wire—and, really, is there any other way for it to go?—there’s a strong body of evidence to suggest that the Buckeyes can slam the door shut on any late drives that the Wolverines might need to put together. This is what happens when your defensive rotation is so deep that your third and fourth corners and defensive ends routinely make big plays: you can keep everyone fresh for the game’s final minutes.

Michigan, meanwhile, is at its offensive worst in the fourth quarter; in that period of play, they rank just 37th nationally in offensive production. With Wilton Speight’s injury still looming large over Jim Harbaugh’s team, this isn’t great news for the Maize and Blue.

Curtis Samuel. College football’s best Swiss army knife suits up in Scarlet and Gray, despite what you may have heard about a certain do-it-all Wolverine (more on him in a minute). Curtis Samuel, aka Brooklyn’s Finest, is the only player to rack up more than 700 receiving and 600 rushing yards in FBS play this season. He’s accounted for 14 total touchdowns in 11 games. At his best, he’s nigh-unguardable.

The problem for the Buckeyes is that they still have to get him the ball against the country’s No. 1 defense. Samuel’s touches have waxed and waned to a huge degree all year; it feels like he’s either got the ball in his hands every play or he’s ignored completely. Ohio State will not win this game without a huge game from Samuel, the kind of game he played against Maryland. If Samuel does eat, the Wolverines might be in Hoke-sized trouble.

Act like you’ve been there before. No player on the Ohio State roster has ever lost to Michigan. The Buckeyes have won four straight against the Wolverines under Urban Meyer’s tutelage, with more than a fighting chance to rack up a fifth straight victory in the sport’s biggest rivalry game.

This team’s seniors have sweated out a close one before—who could forget the 42-41 thriller in 2013, saved by a Tyvis Powell interception on a two-point conversion?—but the last two seasons’ contests haven’t been particularly close. This crop of Buckeye players, and the coach that will lead them onto the field in Columbus, know what it means to beat Michigan. There are no demons to conquer here, only a mantle of greatness to take up.

Michigan’s advantages

Pass defense. The Buckeyes have struggled to stay consistent through the air this season, and that’s worrisome, given the defensive backs they’ll be lining up against on Saturday. By S&P+, Michigan has the nation’s best pass defense; they’ve hovered at or near the top all year. Teams have not been able to solve the puzzle of the Wolverine secondary yet in 2016, and the way J.T. Barrett is playing, the odds of Ohio State being the first team to shred them through the air seem slim.

The Wolverines have allowed so few receptions this season that you have to go 12 names down the list of the team’s top tacklers to find a true cornerback. They boast a punishing safety tandem in Dymonte Thomas and Delano Hill, a pair who are both capable of stout run support and help over the top on pass plays. Noah Brown, Curtis Samuel, Terry McLaurin, and the rest of the Buckeye pass-catchers are going to have their hands full trying to get separation against anyone in the Wolverine secondary.

Jabrill Peppers. Peppers’ actual statistics this season aren’t eye-popping—his Heisman campaign seems based more on his novelty than his production—but the sheer amount of different things he can do on the football field is insane. The closest Buckeye analogue in recent memory was WR/PR/KR/DB Chris Gamble, and even he falls a few positions short of the categories on Peppers’ résumé this season.

The Ohio State-Michigan game is one of the most reliable kingmakers in college football. Peppers’ talents are ridiculous, and this just feels like the kind of game that he could single-handedly break wide open. A backbreaking return TD? A wildcat scramble for six? An interception that goes to the house? There are so many ways that a machine like Peppers can hurt a team.

Run defense. If you were hoping for a balm to ease the sting of reading about Michigan’s No. 1 pass defense, you’re in the wrong section. The Wolverines’ run-stopping is just as scary. Ohio State’s No. 2 rushing offense will be tasked with finding holes in Michigan’s No. 2 rushing defense, and those haven’t been easy to come by for anyone this season.

Even if Mike Weber, J.T. Barrett, and Curtis Samuel make it past the stout Michigan front four, they’ll be hard-pressed to gain ground in the second level. Linebackers Ben Gedeon, Jabrill Peppers, and Mike McCray haven’t let a whole lot past them in 2016. That could change on Saturday, given the combined 2,513 yards and 23 TDs those three Buckeye rushers have fought for through 11 games, but it’s hard to be optimistic.

F/+ prediction

Score: Ohio State 22.6, Michigan 25.1

Win probability: Michigan 56%

The advanced stats like the Wolverines by 2.5 points on Saturday. Vegas disagrees, predicting the Buckeyes to win by a touchdown. These are hardly wide margins to play with, but as our friends over at the Solid Verbal are fond of reminding us, you have to throw out the records in any rivalry game. This one’s no exception.

Ohio State has worn many hats in 2016. The Buckeyes have been, in turns, cheeky upstarts, plodding bores, underachievers, offensive juggernauts, a circus act. It’s impossible to know which version of the Scarlet and Gray will take the field in Columbus this weekend with so much to play for. All that is promised is a hell of a game, another insane chapter in this storied rivalry.

Go Bucks. Beat Michigan.

Also, a potential WR at the next level will be coming to see the Buckeyes, too

According to reports, Mustapha Muhammad (Missouri City, TX /Ridge Point) will be in Columbus on Saturday for the Michigan-Ohio State game. Muhammad, a tight end prospect, is rated as a four-star and the number for tight end in his class. Muhammad checks in at 6-foot-5 and nearly 240 pounds. He’s a matchup nightmare as he’s too fast for linebackers and presents a huge size disadvantage for defensive backs. Muhammad is a 2018 prospect and holds offers from 30 programs.

As seen on 247sports.com, Tim Beck and Ed Warinner are stated to have taken the lead in recruiting Muhammad. Though Ohio State is making a push for him, it looks as if Texas A&M is the favorite right now – followed by Clemson. Still, a good visit this weekend could flip the momentum into Ohio State’s favor as the Buckeyes have been extremely successful recruiting the state of Texas over the last several years. Muhammad is a sure-fire star at the next level and would be a huge pick up for the Buckeyes. Muhammad is a top 100 prospect according to 247Sports, coming in at No. 94.

It is a definite now, this top #Buckeye target will be in Ohio Stadium for the #OhioState - Michigan game (VIP) https://t.co/VW4hr31rO4

— Bill Kurelic (@Bill_Kurelic) November 22, 2016

Class of 2017 athlete Markquese Bell (Bridgeton, NJ / Bridgeton) will be in Columbus on Saturday as well. Bell, a likely wide receiver at the next level holds 19 offers and is rated as the No. 180 player in the country, according to 247Sports. In most classes, Bell is an absolute take for the Buckeyes, but with limited spots in 2017, it could leave Bell looking out.

Still, Ohio State will chase him because there is likely to be a couple spots open when all things are said and done. If the Buckeyes choose to pursue hard, it looks as if Rutgers and Michigan will be the top opponents. The New Jersey prospect is rated as the third best player in the state and comes it at 6-foot-3 and nearly 200 pounds.
