Let’s talk more about the play that really saved Ohio State’s season

We’re not talking about The Spot or the ensuing score if not for Curtis Samuel’s evasive heroics on third-and-nine.
On one play, all of Ohio State’s fortunes turned.
No, we’re not discussing The Spot, though it’s all Jim Harbaugh wants to talk about (the Spot was good, btw). The Wolverines’ coach didn’t display the grace you’d expect from a prestigious Michigan Man after Ohio State’s 30-27 instant-classic triumph in double overtime. Instead, he singularly whined about officiating, most notably focusing on the referee’s spot on J.T. Barrett’s 4th-and-1 run on the game’s penultimate play.
Michigan fans have responded in kind, flooding the internet with screen grabs and conspiracy theories that would make even Donald Trump and Jill Stein blush. Across the nation the debate of The Spot has raged on, it’s 2016’s version of what color is that dress?
For the first time in 112 meetings Ohio State and Michigan needed overtime to settle The Game, in a battle that will be talked about by both fan bases for decades. Given the controversy and consequence surrounding the moment, Barrett’s fourth down conversion will undoubtedly be remembered as the game’s defining play. Fans will discuss The Spot in the same breath as Woodson’s return in ‘97, or Tyvis Powell’s interception of a two-point conversion in ‘13.
However, it was the play prior to Barrett’s run that truly saved Ohio State’s season, and that’s the play that should be immortalized by Buckeye Nation.
Down three in double overtime, Ohio State faced a third-and-nine from the 24-yard-line. The Buckeyes’ offensive line had proven to be incapable in pass protection for most of the game. There was little faith in the stadium that kicker Tyler Durbin could convert on a long field goal if the offense stalled.
On what seemed to be a conservative call, Barrett tossed a swing pass to Curtis Samuel toward the right boundary, where the speedy H-back was met by Michigan’s all-hyped Jabrill Peppers behind the line of scrimmage in a clash of the teams’ two best athletes. Samuel backtracked to the left to avoid Peppers, retreating as far back as the 32-yard-line, then stuttered back to the right before running into his own blocker, only to cut against the grain one more time to the left side of the field.
As the junior from Brooklyn danced and darted through defenders while flirting with disaster, you could almost feel a hundred thousand scarlet-clad fans pushing him forward while screaming No. No! NO! YES!!!
When Samuel finally returned to the line of scrimmage he was on the opposite end of the field from where he initially caught the ball, with two Ohio State blockers ahead of him attempting to occupy four Michigan defenders. On a play where the Buckeyes could have easily been moved out of field goal range, a modest gain would have felt like an enormous win. Instead, Samuel used a series of quick cuts to wiggle through traffic as he so deftly does, putting Ohio State in position to attempt the now infamous fourth down quarterback run.
Michigan can moan all it wants to about officiating, but the Wolverines had ample opportunities to win that game, and Harbaugh should instead look inward at his team’s inability put the nail in Ohio State’s coffin. Had Peppers tracked Samuel down in the backfield, Ohio State would have been out of field goal range and staring at a fourth-and-17. Barrett’s longest completion of the day was for 16 yards.
All of Michigan’s other ten defenders had an opportunity to minimize Samuel’s gain on the play. It was an easy decision for Urban Meyer to go for it on fourth down when he needed just a yard to gain. Faced with a longer conversation, Meyer would have been tasked with trusting either an anemic offense to gain multiple yards on Michigan’s vaunted defense, or a field goal kicker who inspired little confidence after missing a pair of chip shots earlier in the game.
Durbin’s path to Columbus was about as unconventional as Samuel’s path toward the first down marker. The Virginia native was a standout soccer player at James Madison prior to walking on the Ohio State football team in 2015, for his first season of competitive football at any level.
For much of this year Durbin had been effective, connecting on 15 of his first 16 field goal tries. But in front of the largest crowd ever at Ohio Stadium, while being watch by the largest TV audience for a college game this year, Durbin seemed to wilt under the pressure. On Ohio State’s first drive of the game he missed from 37 yards, rendering the Buckeyes’ only successful possession of the first half void. Then, with just 7 minutes left in regulation, he shanked a 21-yard gimmie with a chance to tie the game.
Sure, the senior kicker did redeem himself on Ohio State’s next possession to send the game into overtime. But did you have confidence that he’d connect again with the game on the line in the second frame of extra time? Imagine how much that kid’s life changes for the worst if he misses yet another field goal, this time sealing Ohio State’s fate in such an emotionally taxing game.
Instead, Samuel kept the kicking unit on the sidelines by zig-zagging his way from one sideline to the other nearly untouched, in a feat of pure athleticism.
“That’s called recruiting,” said an almost delirious Meyer after the game when recalling the play.
Speaking of recruiting, countless blue-chip prospects came to The Shoe to see this battle of top-five teams. Everything that the program does caters to recruiting; from wearing LeBron cleats with The King in attendance, to showing a montage on the video board touting the program’s history of developing NFL cornerbacks while the nation’s top two high school cornerbacks in Jeffrey Okudah and Darnay Holmes watched on.
Recruits don’t pick schools based on the outcome of one game, but if you weren’t moved by how that stadium rocked during overtime, or with how the fans poured onto the field while displaying an out-pour of emotions after the Buckeyes won, then you probably were never coming to Columbus in the first place. Samuel’s heroics changed the mood in Ohio Stadium, and he certainly helped to ensure that more great athletes will follow in his footsteps.
The good vibes felt by recruits extended to Buckeye Nation, which watched most of Saturday’s game with a sense of angst. In truth, Ohio State was outplayed and out coached by Michigan for three quarters. The offensive line continued to struggle, the passing game continued to underwhelm, and the play calling continued to be predictable and conservative. Throwing a swing pass on third-and-nine would have been one of the most criticized play calls of the year, had Samuel not donned Superman’s cape.
A few days before The Game, former Ohio State great Chris “Beanie” Wells penned an article for The Player’s Tribune, with a direct message to this year’s team.
“If you make a play in this game, and we win,” he wrote, “you’ll cement yourself in Ohio State history forever. You’ll be a legend. That’s the magnitude of Ohio State vs. Michigan.”
Regardless of what happens in the looming College Football Playoffs, this year’s team will always be remembered for the way it persevered against Michigan in one of the greatest games in the history of this storied rivalry. Barrett’s narrow conversion, and Samuel’s game-sealing touchdown on the ensuing play, in which he leaped into the end zone as if about to take flight in a most picturesque moment, will forever be lasting images.
But it was Samuel’s heroic evasion of Michigan’s entire defense on third-and-nine that put Ohio State in a position to win the game. It was that play that saved Ohio State’s season. And it should be that play that Buckeye Nation remembers years from now when it reflects on Curtis Samuel’s legend.

Could Ohio State’s newest assistant head out west soon?
Late last night, Oregon decided to pull the plug on the Mark Helfrich era after an exceptionally disappointing season and years of diminishing returns. Since the Ducks haven’t fired a coach in ages, and their geography, culture and historical offensive system are unique, building a list of possible candidates is a bit trickier than it might be for other openings.
Already, one name that you might not expect has been reported as a candidate, and that’s Ohio State defensive coordinator Greg Schiano. According to Bruce Feldman, Schiano is a real candidate for the job.

John Canzano of OregonLive also reported that Schiano is in the mix for the position. Nike CEO and Oregon megabooster Phil Knight was in the Ohio State locker room after their victory over Michigan, and Canzano couldn’t help but notice. From his report:
Knight looked joyful and engaged. He was in the presence of a winning program that made him proud. But it was who was in the room, particularly taking a knee to Knight's left, near the smiling Meyer, that caught my attention. That would be Buckeyes defensive coordinator Greg Schiano. Because regardless of how and why Knight ended up in that locker room, it's Schiano who has emerged as a strong candidate in this search.
Schiano would be a course correction for Oregon. His defense wouldn't be generous. He has experience coaching in the NFL and in major college football. He won 11 games once at Rutgers, and according to a source involved in the hiring process at Oregon, "According to his peer groups, he's one of the best.
Schiano has been outstanding for the Buckeyes this year, helping turn a young, but very talented secondary into a playmaking machine, strong enough to offset struggles with the offense. The play of Malik Hooker, Marcus Lattimore and Gareon Conley has been exceptional, and they’re a major reason why Ohio State is in strong position to grab a Playoff spot this season. Schiano deserves some credit for that.
But on many levels, Schiano would also be a curious fit at Oregon. A New Jersey native, he’s spent his entire coaching career along the East Coast and Midwest, far away from Oregon’s traditional recruiting territories along the West Coast and Texas. He has a defensive background, unlike the offense-first run of recent Oregon head coaches. And he has the reputation for being a strict disciplinarian, unlike the run of coaches with more “player-first” reputations that the Ducks have enjoyed in recent years.
Other potential names to watch for this job include P.J. Fleck of Western Michigan, Scott Frost of UCF, Dana Holgorsen of West Virginia, and Oklahoma offensive coordinator Lincoln Riley.
Schiano was a very successful head coach at Rutgers, a very tough job. He’s probably going to be a head coach again at the FBS level shortly. Will it be at Oregon? We’ll find out soon enough.

In a battle of unbeatens, the Buckeyes and Cavaliers meet Wednesday night in Charlottesville as part of the ACC/Big Ten Challenge.
Now is when head coach Thad Matta and fans of Ohio State basketball will begin to learn what kind of team the Buckeyes have this year. Ohio State, 6-0 on the young season, will face its stiffest test thus far on Wednesday night, travelling to Charlottesville to take on Virginia as part of the ACC/Big Ten Challenge.
The Cavaliers, who are also unbeaten through their first half-dozen games, are fresh off a tournament victory in the Emerald Coast Classic, and find themselves ranked No. 6 in both the AP and USA Today Coaches polls.
The Buckeyes have looked good for stretches this season, but finally put everything together for a full 40 minutes last Friday against Marshall. In a 111-70 pounding of the Thundering Herd, the scarlet and gray had six players score in double-figures, won the rebounding battle by nearly 2-to-1, and played solid defense to the tune of a 37.1 percent opponent shooting percentage.
Quality of opponents for Ohio State thus far could be working to inflate the team’s success. According to KenPom, the Buckeyes come in 21st in the country overall, but their opposition has an average ranking of 217, with Providence (No. 59) being the only one in the top 130.
Ohio State has six players averaging double-figures this season, showing a balanced offensive attack that can score in a variety of ways. This will be thoroughly tested by a Virginia defense that KenPom ranks the best in all of Division I in efficiency. The Cavaliers are yielding just over 40 points per game, and holding opponents to a tick above 30 percent shooting.
This matchup should serve as a quality barometer for the development of this Buckeye team in the season’s first month. As Matta and his squad prepare for a Big Ten conference season that is just a month away, Virginia is really the first step in getting the team battle-tested.
Numbers to know

Through six games, Ohio State has an average scoring margin of +20.2 per game, which is currently tops in the Big Ten. Though no doubt aided by the 41-point victory over Marshall, the number underscores a return of sorts to the program’s roots, as smothering defense has once again become a focal point.
KenPom ranks the Buckeyes 14th in the country in defensive efficiency, and the 58.8 points per game the team gives up is tied for 13th. Ohio State is on top of the statistical heap in the conference in both offensive and defensive field goal percentage thus far in the season, which is a far cry from where the program found itself a year ago.

As mentioned, Ohio State’s competition through the first six games hasn’t exactly been stellar, but neither has Virginia’s. The Cavaliers’ opponents thus far have an average KenPom ranking of 179, and like the Buckeyes, Providence has been the toughest team on the schedule.
Ohio State beat the Friars 72-67 in Columbus, and Virginia’s 63-52 victory over them on Saturday only appears marginally better, though it was played at a neutral site. This game will be as much a test for the Cavaliers as it is for the Buckeyes, a yardstick for measuring how far they really need to go be considered among the elite teams in the country.

The ability to stretch the defense has allowed more room to operate in the paint for the likes of Jae’Sean Tate and Trevor Thompson, both of whom are scoring at career-high clips.

JaQuan Lyle
It’s been an interesting season so far for Lyle, the lone member of last year’s freshman class that is still a member of the program. After finding a quick seat on the bench in favor of C.J. Jackson in Ohio State’s first two games due to ball security concerns, the sophomore from Evansville has turned things on in a big way. Over the past four contests, Lyle is averaging 15 points, better than four rebounds and seven assists, and fewer than two turnovers per game.
That stretch of good play has helped the Buckeyes make up for the absence of Keita Bates-Diop, who has sat the past three games with an ankle injury. Without Bates-Diop, Lyle is by far the best playmaker on the team, using his big body to get into the paint where he can finish or kick out to an open shooter.
Marc Loving
Ohio State’s lone senior was virtually invisible for a three-game stretch against North Carolina Central, Providence, and Western Carolina, failing to score in double digits in any of them. Yet the last two times out, he has helped pace the offense. After a 19-point effort against Jackson State, the former high school Mr. Basketball in Ohio put in a monster 20-point, 14-rebound game against Marshall.
On the season, Loving is averaging 11.5 points and 5.5 rebounds per game, but his team-high 17 turnovers and mediocre 32 percent shooting from three-point range are a concern for a player that is already battling the image of an underachiever during his career. The big stage against Virginia makes for a perfect time to begin proving the doubters wrong.

London Perrantes
With the departure of All-American Malcolm Brogdon after last season, this Virginia team now firmly belongs to Perrantes. The senior from Los Angeles who was an honorable mention All-ACC performer a year ago is among the most solid point guards in the country, and appears on the Cousy Award watch list.
Perrantes averages 9.2 points, 3.7 rebounds, and 4.3 assists in 26.8 minutes per game for head coach Tony Bennett, shooting 37 percent from the three-point line. He also doesn’t turn the ball over, tallying just six miscues in six games, and plays excellent perimeter defense.
Darius Thompson
Memphis transfer Austin Nichols was expected to pick up a big chunk of the scoring void left by Brogdon, but was dismissed from the team after playing in just a single game. Thompson, who is in his second season with the Cavaliers after transferring from Tennessee, has stepped up instead. The only Virginia player with a double-figure scoring average, the junior from Murfreesboro gives the ‘Hoos 10 points and 2.7 boards a night, and is second on the team in assists.
Thompson, just 6-foot-4, is shooting nearly 57 percent from the field, and he’s making better than 47 percent of his attempts from three-point range. Along with Perrantes, Thompson will give the Ohio State backcourt plenty to contend with on the defensive end.

The No. 2 player in the state of Indiana for 2017 is looking for a new place to commit.
News broke on Tuesday afternoon that 2017 linebacker Pete Werner decommitted from Notre Dame. Werner had been committed to the Fighting Irish since last March. This news is relevant to Ohio State because the Buckeyes are the team who are seemingly making a late surge for the four-star prospect. Werner, who already has an Ohio State offer, was in Columbus over the weekend.

At 6-foot-3, 220 pounds, Werner is an athletic freak who has strength and running speed. He is an absolute take for Ohio State if he wants into the class. He’s a top 300 player and the No. 2 overall player in the state of Indiana, according to 247Sports. With the Buckeyes more than likely falling out of the Anthony Hines sweepstakes, it opens an extra spot that the staff was saving. Werner looks as if he’ll be the player that takes it. Kerry Coombs has led the charge in this recruitment and it could be over sooner rather than later.
OSU going the JUCO route?
There are reports floating around the members of the Ohio State coaching staff were in to see Blinn Junior College prospect Kendall Sheffield yesterday. Sheffield is a former five-star cornerback who played his freshman year at Alabama, before transferring to Blinn. Sheffield is an elite prospect who is highly regarded as the best junior college (JUCO) player in the United States.

Also of note, Urban Meyer reportedly spent his Tuesday in the state of Texas and had an in-home visit with five-star defensive tackle Marvin Wilson. Wilson had a great visit to Columbus for the Michigan game and Urban attempted to carry that momentum into the work week. As you know, Wilson has a strong relationship with newly appointed head coach Ed Orgeron at LSU, but Ohio State is in the thick of the race and definitely has a shot in this one. The Buckeyes will continue to work Wilson and ride this one all the way to the end. Wilson is the number three overall player in the class of 2017.
