With only four short days away, the inevitable clash between the Ohio State Buckeyes and the Clemson Tigers in Glendale, Arizona is coming. The thought of the Semi-Final Playoff bout between two top-tier programs that are vying for a spot in the Playoff Championship Game fills my heart with a good mix of nervousness and excitement, and I am somewhere in the middle. I occasionally am paranoid when the Buckeyes play and this game is no exception. Hopefully, Ohio State can advance, but this should be another instant classic that the Buckeyes are participating in.

Defensive Front Seven:

Both teams possess stellar and stout defenses capable of holding opposing offenses down until their respective offenses get things rolling. After the completion of last season, both Ohio State and Clemson suffered a mass exodus when a group of starter left to begin their careers in the NFL. Clemson had 12 players drafted with Shaq Lawson being the only player who was drafted in the first round. Clemson had four players taken in the first three rounds. Ohio State also had 12 players drafted, but they saw Joey Bosa, Ezekiel Elliott, Eli Apple, Taylor Decker and Darron Lee being taken in the first round and a total of 10 players taken in the first three rounds. Both teams took a hit on talent on the defensive side of the ball and when comparing both teams losses, Clemson lost 8 total defenders and Ohio State lost 7 on their end. Both teams showed their ability to recruit and reload, and they both have players on their respective rosters that they battled each other for. Can their new-look defenses shut down the opposing teams’ offense?

Christian Wilkins, DE:

imgres-27.jpg
Christian Wilkins, who stands at 6-4, 310 lbs is one of the playmakers on this Clemson Defense who can disrupt the rhythm of opposing offenses and he will be the one to set the tone for this defense. Wilkins was a one of the few five star recruits that Coach Meyer wanted badly, but things tend to happen for a reason. Wilkins is a beast who can affect offenses because of his motor and his willpower. Wilkins has 44 total tackles this season with 21 solo tackles. He has 12 tackles for loss and 3.5 sacks to go along with that. The Slobs will face their toughest defensive front to date. Wilkins will look to make an impact in the trenches.

Carlos Watkins, DT:

imgres-1-15.jpg
Carlos Watkins is Clemson’s 6-3, 300 lbs Redshirt Senior who is the oldest player on the Defensive Line. Watkins has tallied 41 tackles with 22 solo tackles. He has 8.5 sacks for the season and 10.5 tackles for loss with a blocked kick to add to his stat sheet. Watkins is a penetrator and one of the most influential players on the young Defensive Line. He will work with the other linemen to disrupt the Ohio State Offensive Lineman. Watkins is the third heaviest lineman on the line, but he is ruthless. He will look to take advantage of True Freshman Michael Jordan in this matchup inside the trenches.

Dexter Lawrence, DT:

imgres-2-10.jpg
True Freshman Dexter Lawrence was the other prized five star recruit that Coach Meyer missed out on. His recruitment went down to the wire and Ohio State nearly had it, but distance was the key determining factor in this recruiting battle between Clemson and Ohio State. Lawrence is from North Carolina and he is the heaviest lineman on the defense. He is 6-5 and he weighs 340 lbs. Lawrence is literally the anchor and he will be matched up against Elflein and Price along the interior. He has logged 58 total tackles with 19 solo tackles, he has 9 tackles for loss, 6.5 sacks and he has 2 blocks on Special teams. He has an engine and he will be a problem for the Slobs the entire game.

Clelin Ferrell, DE:

imgres-3-9.jpg
Clelin Ferrell is the lightest Defensive Lineman on Clemson’s roster. Ferrell is 6-5, 265 lbs and he is the quickest member on the squad as well. Ferrell has 39 tackles with 16 solo tackles, he has 8.5 tackles for loss and 5 sacks for the season. He earns his keep by pressuring the opposing Quarterback. He will line up against Isaiah Prince, who is Ohio State’s biggest question mark. He has given up an excess of 45+ Qb pressures and Clemson will take that matchup. They will look to pressure J.T. Barrett early and often to disrupt his rhythm and put him on his back. This will be one of the matchup’s to watch as Prince will look to redeem himself against a stout Clemson front who loves to blitz, a lot.

Dorian O’Daniel, WLB:

imgres-4-9.jpg
Dorian O’Daniel is 6-1, 215 lbs and is a fourth year Junior. He has 48 tackles for the season with 31 solo tackles. He is a sure tackler with the grit and determination to bring down the ball carrier. He has 9 tackles for loss, 2.5 sacks and a forced fumble. O’Daniel will be used on the edges and he is one of the many speed rushers that Clemson seems to stockpile on their roster. He plays like Vic Beasley as he looks to terrorize the Ohio State Offensive Tackles.

Kendall Joseph, MLB:

imgres-5-9.jpg
Kendall Joseph is 6-0, 230 lbs and he is from South Carolina playing for his home state team. Although he is the smallest member of their Linebacking core, he plays with the grit and the determination of a bigger player. Joseph is a playmaker and he sits at second on the team in tackles with 94 tackles and 49 of those are solo tackles. He has 10 tackles for loss, 3.5 sacks, 5 Qb hurries and a forced fumble. He will attempt to wreak havoc on the Buckeyes O-Line to expose their youth at both Offensive Tackle spots and at Left Guard. Joseph is only Redshirt Sophomore, but he has played in big games, as he gained valuable experience during last season’s College Football Playoff run.

Ben Boulware, WLB:

images-2-8.jpg
Ben Boulware is the heart and the soul of this Clemson Defense. He play with fire and you could see it when he steps onto the field and after he makes plays. Boulware, a Senior out of Anderson, South Carolina who is 6-0, 235 lbs leads all tacklers in the front seven with 105 tackles and he has 50 solo tackles. He has been disruptive with 9 tackles for loss, 4 sacks and 3 forced fumbles. Boulware plays with the raw emotion that gets his team up for games, but that could also be his downfall. He is known to have a short fuse and he is prone to penalties, but he is a valuable playmaker that needs to get going early. He will be used on blitzes and in coverage as he looks for the win and a Championship berth.

Sam Hubbard, DE:

images-3-4-300x154.jpg
Sam Hubbard stands at 6-5, 266 lbs and he was tabbed as an Athlete coming out of high school. He was supposed to become a Safety for the Buckeyes, but a growth spurt shifted him toward the D-Line. Hubbard has 41 tackles and 18 of those were solo tackles. He has 7 tackles for loss with 3 sacks. He sees a lot of double teams while on the field and not in the vaunted Rushmen Package. He does his job well and frees up the Line Backers from the trenches. Hubbard is an effective pass rusher and he will be looked at to hold containment when Watson attempts to rush the ball and rush the passer as well.

Dre’mont Jones, DT:

images-5-6.jpg
Dre’mont Jones benefited from the injury to Tracy Sprinkle during the offseason. He is 6-3, 280 lbs and he fits the Ohio State mold of the athletic and disruptive space eater in the interior. Jones, a Redshirt Freshman, started off slow, but he has gained more consistency and confidence as the season draws to a close. Jones has registered 46 total tackles as an interior Defensive Lineman with 18 solo tackles. He will be used to disrupt the linemen in the trenches. He will most likely be used in a rotation as the Buckeyes have depth at just about every spot on the defensive front seven. Although Jones has no sacks to show, he shows up on film constantly taking on double-teams and catching the attention of O-Lineman to free up a blitzing member of his defense. He will look to doing battle in the trenches.

Michael Hill, DT:

imgres-6-5.jpg
Michael Hill also benefited from the Sprinkle injury, but unlike Jones, he was slated to start alongside him. Hill is 6-3, 305 lbs and he is the heaviest member of the team. Like Jones, his stats aren’t mind blowing, but he serves a purpose on the defensive gameplan. He is another space eater that will take on double teams to free up teammates. He has 19 tackles this season with 7 solo tackles. He has 3 tackles for loss. He has the ability to penetrate if given the opportunity and he will line up against a mammoth Right Guard Tyrone Crowder who weighs an astounding 340 lbs. He will certainly be tough to move and maneuver against, but the war in the trenches will be another aspect of this game to pay attention to. Hill played high school ball in Pendleton, South Carolina and was also recruited by Clemson. Hopefully, he plays with the intensity and a chip on his shoulder as he dons the Scarlet and Gray during his third season at Ohio State.

Tyquan Lewis, DE:

imgres-7-4.jpg
Tyquan Lewis was another recruit that fought over by both teams. He played in nearby North Carolina, but chose to branch away and play further away from home. Lewis is in his third year at Ohio State. He is 6-4, 266 lbs and he is another pass rusher that fits the mold at Ohio State. He will be utilized to rush the passer and disrupt the Clemson tempo. Like Hubbard, he lacks in the statistical aspect of things, but he does his job and plays his role on defense. He has 10 tackles for loss and 7.5 sacks. He has 5 Qb hurries and 3 forced fumbles. He is a disruptive force and in obvious passing situations, he will be utilized in the Rushmen Package to get to the Quarterback. He will be looked at to set the tone and ensure his brothers follow suit. The opposing Tackles opposite of them will be tough tests for Lewis and his teammates, but they will bring the heat as often as they are allowed to.

Chris Worley, SLB:

imgres-8-2.jpg
Chris Worley, a Junior out of Cleveland will be one of the playmakers on this defense that will look to cause fits for Clemson’s Offense. Worley is 6-2, 228 lbs and he plays to Ohio State’s standard for Line Backers. There is a legacy at the position that he has to uphold and he has done a good job as he finally gets his chance after sitting behind players like Darron Lee. Worley has 59 tackles for the season and 35 of those were done by himself. Worley has no sacks this season, but he filled that void by gathering an interception, a forced fumble, 2 Qb hurries and he has batted down 4 passes. He has 4.5 tackles for loss and he will looks to shut down the strong side of the Clemson Offense with his speed and his ability to tackle. He will have a tough time getting past the Offensive Tackles, but we will have to see what will happen during gameday.

Raekwon McMillan, MLB:

imgres-9-3.jpg
Raekwon McMillan will lead the defense after taking the reins after sharing snaps with Curtis Grant. McMillan is a Junior and a projected early round pick in the upcoming draft, but like all draft eligible players, they are locked-into this matchup with Clemson. McMillan is 6-2, 243 and he is one Coach Meyer’s most prized recruits that he pulled from the heart of the south. McMillan is from Georgia and he picked Ohio State over Clemson. He is as motivated as anybody on this defense due to the proximity to home. McMillan leads all tacklers with 87 total tackles and 37 solo tackles. He has 5 tackles for loss with a sack, 2 Qb hurries and 2 forced fumbles. He will need to play the game of his life on defense against a potent Clemson Offense. He will need to make the right checks and audibles. He will need to get his teammates motivated and he will need to play motivated like the “basic defense” that shut down the potent Oklahoma Offense.

Jerome Baker, WLB:

imgres-10-2-300x118.jpg
Jerome Baker also benefited from an injury to a Dante Booker. Although Booker began as the starter, injuries derailed his chances and it gave way to Baker’s talent. Baker, a Cleveland native, is 6-1, 225 lbs and he plays with a reckless abandon that Darron Lee played with during his Buckeye career. Baker, Sophomore had the chance to grow under Lee and he certainly plays with the same intensity. Baker is second on the team in tackles with 79 and 42 of those were solo tackles. Baker has 8.5 tackles for loss and he is the swiss army knife of the defense. He has 2 interceptions, 1 of which was a pick-six that he had against Oklahoma and 3.5 sacks. He will be used to rush the passer and play in coverage. He is as rangy as they come and he has the speed to do both. The only question mark is his tackling ability. Sure, he is second on the team, but he rarely wraps up and goes for the huge hit. He will need to bring his A Game if he wants to advance.

The Reserves:

Both teams have depth in their front seven. Clemson has Richard Yeargin and Austin Bryant on the Defensive Line to spell the starters. Ohio State has the likes of Nick Bosa, Jaylin Holmes and Robert Landers who are all disruptive in their own right. This will be a test of wills for both teams as they looks to advance and both teams are just about even talent-wise. This will be a game within a game and the team who dominates in the trenches will advance. This will be a battle until the end and as it draws near, the excitement becomes more overwhelming. This is a game that could go either way, and it is probably the matchup to watch in the Playoffs.

LGHL Ohio State’s Curtis Samuel is a star but has unfinished business

Ohio State’s Curtis Samuel is a star but has unfinished business

The star H-back for the Buckeyes has plenty of goals to accomplish.

"It's definitely tempting and interesting. Especially with [the ceremony] being in New York."

- Curtis Samuel via Pete Thamel, Sports Illustrated

Ohio State H-back Curtis Samuel has been one of the most electrifying Buckeyes and players in the country this season. The Brooklyn-native has only elevated his draft stock more after the regular season and now he’ll be put in front of a national audience with a chance to help Ohio State make another national championship appearance. But even with the chance to impress on an even larger stage, there’s no questioning Samuel’s talent. At one point this season, he was receiving just as much hype about the Heisman Trophy as J.T. Barrett initially was.

With that being said, it doesn’t seem impossible that Samuel could potentially return to Ohio State next season (he seems to be in no rush) and should that be the case, he would likely be near the top of the Heisman Trophy race to start the season. Known as a comedian on the team, it’s likely not an issue of enjoying the presence of his teammates. While scouts think he’ll likely end up as a top 60 pick in the NFL draft, Samuel may decide he still has some things he’d like to improve and work on. The article mentions as much, including working on getting off press coverage as a receiver.

“When he scored, it was like I scored. We had visions of playing well on Saturdays like we have been doing, and we've always talked about it. We view life through the same lens. And that's what it's all about. When you can live out your dream with your best friend? Not many people can say they did that. It's truly amazing.”

- Chris Worley via Austin Ward, ESPN

Not all defensive players start out that way, especially on a team as versatile and talented as Ohio State. Just ask Marshon Lattimore and Chris Worley. After all, the two childhood friends watched either weave between traffic constantly as youngsters carrying the football with little league teams. So it wasn’t a surprise for Worley to see Lattimore with the ball in his hands and scoring against Tulsa in early September. It’s a nice article to read as they talk about their glory days when they were younger, running over fellow kids into the endzone. Lattimore even mentions that Worley would sort of bowl people over because he was bigger than most of the other kids.

Both players have suffered through their own hardships at Ohio State. Lattimore couldn’t stay healthy long enough to see the field for very long, suffering several injuries before adding quality playing time last season and breaking out this year. Worley, meanwhile, very well could have been the starter before 2016. But Darron Lee won the job over Worley, and ended up being a first round draft pick in the NFL draft. After a lot of patience, Worley finally was named a starting linebacker and hasn’t looked back since, helping solidify one of the top defenses in the country.

“I can’t hold the ball. I have to make sure I get it out in a timely fashion. There were some things I could have done better to help the offensive line out, and that’s just getting the ball out as far as timing and things like that. It’s out pretty fast when we’re on time.”

- J.T. Barrett via Austin Ward, ESPN

There’s already been a magic number decided for J.T. Barrett and Ohio State when facing Clemson’s vaunted pass rush. 2.7 seconds is the goal, and actually has been all season long. When breaking down the most productive plays from training camp and measuring the time span from snap to pass down to the tenth of a second, 2.7 is what came out. That’s the measurement for Barrett and for the Buckeyes that would determine a failed or successful play.

Ohio State allowed just five sacks in its first six games, but in the next six games, Barrett was sacked 20 times. For the Buckeyes to be successful against Clemson, Barrett has to fire early and often when passing and more importantly, be decisive with the ball in his hands. And the offensive line needs to be able to hold their own much like they did at the start of the regular season. Of course, it’s easier said than done. The Tigers’ pass rush is certainly a formidable opponent and will provide plenty of challenges on Saturday. But if the receivers make good cuts and are able to be open in time for Barrett, then Ohio State has an excellent chance of emerging victorious.

With the national semifinal up next, the Buckeyes stick with their normal lineup.

clemson_depth_chart.56_page_001.jpg

The last time Ohio State took the field, the Buckeyes defeated arch rival Michigan in dramatic fashion to seal their place in the College Football Playoff. A double overtime win over the third-ranked team in the country at the time all but sealed Ohio State’s fate. Now the Buckeyes are in the playoff and looking to extend their winning ways over second-ranked Clemson in the national semifinal game. Let’s take a look at the depth chart.

J.T. Barrett is the starting quarterback and has been for the entirety of the season, that won’t change. Barrett didn’t exactly play all that well until later in the game against Michigan, but went 15-of-32 passing for 124 yards and rushed for 125 yards on an eye-popping 30 carries. His only touchdown came in the first overtime on the ground. Joe Burrow remains the backup.

At running back, Mike Weber remains the starter with OR in between he and Samuel. With a lingering shoulder injury, Weber had possibly his quietest game as a Buckeye, carrying the ball 11 times for just 26 yards, but did add a touchdown. Samuel had much of the same, with seven carries for 54 yards but his only touchdown was the game-winner. Both of them will have to be at their best against Clemson if the Buckeyes are to be successful.

The starters are the same as in previous weeks, as the receiving core continues its growth. Noah Brown starts at X, K.J Hill OR Corey Smith OR Johnnie Dixon all slotted for the third wide receiver spot, and Terry McLaurin OR James Clark at Z. Austin Mack and Binjimen Victor are the third-string options. Only six different players caught passes against Michigan, with Noah Brown having perhaps the biggest day among the receivers, with only three receptions for 40 yards. No receiver caught a touchdown against the Wolverines.

The H-back spot remains with Curtis Samuel OR Dontre Wilson. Samuel continues to be one of the more electrifying players in the country, and provided the final spark against Michigan. Samuel rushed for 54 yards on seven carries and also hauled in four receptions for 32 yards. Wilson had just one reception for nine yards.

The tight end spot is firmly locked down by Marcus Baugh with A.J. Alexander listed as the backup. Baugh caught three passes against the Wolverines for 27 yards but was mostly quiet beyond that.

The offensive line starters are listed as Jamarco Jones, Michael Jordan, Pat Elflein, Billy Price, and Isaiah Prince (from left to right). The offensive line continues their improvement with several good games coming from them in a row. If there was ever a time to be at the top of their game, this next game would be perfect timing.

On the defensive side of the ball, Sam Hubbard OR Jayln Holmes and Tyquan Lewis remain listed as the defensive end starters. The backups at defensive end are Nick Bosa OR Jonathon Cooper. In the middle, Michael Hill anchors the defensive line alongside Dre’Mont Jones who replaced Tracy Sprinkle and Davon Hamilton is listed as the co-starter with Jones.

The linebacking core continues to be a strong unit. Raekwon McMillan is still slotted in at middle linebacker. Surrounding him are outside linebackers Chris Worley and Dante Booker OR Jerome Baker. Booker suffered a slight MCL sprain early on against Bowling Green and a combination of Joe Burger and Jerome Baker have stepped in very well in his place. Rashod Berry, Joe Burger, and Craig Fada are your backups. Baker has been the one to fill in for Booker most of all season, and has played well, even coming up with a key interception against Michigan.

At cornerback, Gareon Conley is the starter on one end and Marshon Lattimore OR Denzel Ward on the other for the second corner spot. For safeties, Damon Webb slides over this season with Malik Hooker getting the other safety spot. Erick Smith is listed as the backup to Hooker, while Jordan Fuller is the backup to Webb. The secondary had another solid defensive performance stepping up in clutch moments, as Hooker came up with an early interception for a touchdown.

For special teams, sophomore walk-on Tyler Durbin continues to be the starter at kicker for both kickoffs and field goals as Sean Nuernberger recovers from a groin injury that forced him to miss most of camp. Durbin connected on all three of his extra points against Michigan, but also gave Buckeye fans nightmare fuel as he missed two critical short field goals before finally nailing the field goal to push the game to overtime.

Senior Cameron Johnston remains as the punter, and that’s no surprise considering he’s been a mainstay since his freshman season and has done a tremendous job. Johnston had six punts for an average of 46 yards.

At punt return, Curtis Samuel OR K.J. Hill take over after Dontre Wilson’s struggles. Handling kickoff returns will be Parris Campbell OR Dontre Wilson. The long-snapping duties are given to Liam McCollough, and holding for kicks is Cameron Johnston.

Of course, that doesn’t mean Ohio State can’t use it as bulletin board material.

Clemson safety Jadar Johnson had some words about Ohio State QB J.T. Barrett at late morning media availability that sure are making their way around the internet.

As though they were delivered with the same bravado as Oklahoma freshman backup quarterback Austin Kendall, who infamously predicted starter Baker Mayfield would pick apart a “basic” Ohio State defense, many are quickly pointing to Johnson’s “He’s not one of the best quarterbacks we’ve played this year,” as though the senior was trying to provoke Ohio State.

Looking at the actual context, as well as some of the ups and downs Barrett’s experienced over the course of the last two seasons as a passer, paints a bit of a different picture.

VIDEO: Clemson's Jadar Johnson's evaluation of Buckeye QB J.T. Barrett. pic.twitter.com/CordqlWKjS

— Jerod Smalley (@JerodNBC4) December 27, 2016

“I’m not taking anything away from him, I don’t think he’s a bad player, he’s definitely a good player, but you know, he just doesn’t stand out as one of the best quarterbacks we’ve played this year,” Johnson said subdued and not in a provocative manner.

Clemson had an epic duel with eventual Heisman Trophy winner Lamar Jackson, one of the few players capable of hurting opposing defenses with his legs even more than Barrett. And while Barrett threw fewer interceptions had a slightly higher completion percentage on the season than Jackson, Jackson’s arm strength and effectiveness on the deep ball surpassed his counterpart in scarlet and gray this past season.

“Actually, I feel like, he’s a great quarterback on his legs. I don’t feel real strong about his arms; I don’t think he’s one of the best passers. So I feel like if we can limit him on his legs, limit him in the running game, I feel like we’ll have a pretty good chance of doing good against this offense, because you know they’re a run first offense,” Johnson added.

Again, these are hardly fighting words, and to be honest, a pretty accurate assessment of the 2016 edition of J.T. Barrett. The Tigers also go against two time Heisman Trophy finalist Deshaun Watson everyday in practice.

Of course click-chasing and Facebook misdirection aside, the only thing that really matters is how the folks in the same locker room as Barrett perceive the comments.

A team like Ohio State certainly doesn’t need any extra motivation -- it’s the College Football Playoff semifinal against a team who beat the Buckeyes just two years ago. But that doesn’t mean Barrett’s and peers won’t try to push all the extra buttons they can in an effort to get one of Barrett’s best games of the season out of him.

The Big Ten will get a little more involved in bowl season, seeing three teams in action.

Last week ATS: 3-4-1 (2-4-1 National, 1-0 B1G)

Season ATS: 91-96-5 (43-47-2 National, 47-49-3 B1G)

Heart of Dallas Bowl: Army (-10) v. North Texas - 12/27 12:00 PM EST - ESPN

The only bowl game which features a rematch from the regular season will take place in Dallas on Tuesday afternoon. On October 22nd North Texas defeated Army 35-18 thanks to seven turnovers by the Black Knights and 160 yards rushing and three scores from running back Jeffrey Wilson.

Last time out Army was able to snap a 14-game losing streak to Navy, defeating the Midshipmen 21-17. After winning a combined six games in 2014 and 2015, Army was able to become bowl eligible for the first time since 2010. The Black Knights rely heavily on their rushing attack, running for 327 yards per game and passing for just 76 yards per game.

Army isn’t going to turn the ball over seven times like they did in the first meeting, but I don’t see them blowing out the Mean Green. This just feels like too many points for the Black Knights to be laying. Army avenges their earlier loss to North Texas but the margin of victory isn’t by double digits.

Army 30, North Texas 23

Military Bowl: No. 24 Temple (-11.5) v. Wake Forest - 12/27 3:30 PM EST - ESPN

I bet Temple is hoping they can pry some insider information out of somebody with Wake Forest ties. Not like the Owls will really need it, but it certainly couldn’t hurt interim head coach Ed Foley. Earlier this month Matt Rhule left to take the Baylor job, and after this game Florida defensive coordinator Geoff Collins will take over.

What can I say about Wake Forest? No really, I don’t know what I can say about the Demon Deacons. Wake Forest has a pretty good defense, but that’s about it. I really can’t see Wake Forest’s feeble offense doing much against Temple’s tough defense.

It’s always a little nerve racking backing a team in a bowl game with an interim coach, especially giving this many points. I feel Temple is a little different, since they have not only won seven in a row, but they were able to win the AAC. The Owls should have little trouble against the Demon Deacons here.

Temple 34, Wake Forest 17

Holiday Bowl: Minnesota v. Washington State (-10) - 12/27 7:00 PM EST - ESPN

Is Minnesota even focused on this game? The Golden Gophers were too busy having a stupid boycott when 10 players were suspended by the school. Too bad Minnesota didn’t continue their protest, that way we wouldn’t have to watch Mitch Leidner play quarterback. The senior has tossed 12 interceptions this year, including four in the regular season finale against Wisconsin.

Washington State has little trouble at their quarterback position. Luke Falk has been great pretty much all year, throwing for 4,204 yards and 37 touchdowns. The Cougars took a hit when wide receiver River Cracraft was injured for the season, but they still have Gabe Marks, who has hauled in 85 passes and 13 touchdowns.

Minnesota’s passing defense was second worst in the Big Ten, so it could be a long night for the Golden Gophers as they try and slow down Falk and Marks. This one isn’t going to be pretty for Minnesota as Mike Leach’s squad piles on the points in San Diego.

Washington State 41, Minnesota 24

Cactus Bowl: Boise State (-7.5) v. Baylor - 12/27 10:15 PM EST - ESPN

Speaking of embarrassing programs, now we move to Baylor. The Bears started off the season with six straight wins, but nothing went right for Jim Grobe in the second half of the season, as Baylor dropped their final six games. It certainly didn’t help that quarterback Seth Russell was injured, leaving Zach Smith to start the final three games of the regular season.

Boise State had dreams of earning the Group of Five berth to the Cotton Bowl, but a 30-28 loss to Wyoming earlier in the year, and a 27-20 loss to Air Force in their final game of the regular season dashed those hopes. Baylor will likely get a heavy dose of Boise State running back Jeremy McNichols, who has rushed for 1,663 yards and 23 touchdowns this year.

I feel like Baylor has checked out on the season. Not only is interim coach Jim Grobe coaching his final game for the Bears, but running back Shock Linwood is skipping this game to focus on the NFL Draft. Quarterback Brett Rypien and McNichols will likely put up big numbers and hand Baylor their seventh loss in a row.

Boise State 38, Baylor 23

Pinstripe Bowl: No. 23 Pittsburgh (-5.5) v. Northwestern - 12/28 2:00 PM EST - ESPN

The Pinstripe Bowl is one of my favorites of the non-major bowl games. Not only do we get the game being played in Yankee Stadium, but usually it is pretty fun. The last two years the game has gone into overtime, and this year’s matchup could be pretty exciting.

Pitt comes into this game having won the highest scoring FBS game ever, and they will be looking to send running back James Conner off to the NFL on a high note. Conner has overcome a lot during his time with the Panthers, and this year ran for 1,060 yards and 16 touchdowns. With the productive offense Pitt has put on the field this year, it’s easy to see why LSU hired offensive coordinator Matt Canada away from the Panthers.

Northwestern has some playmakers of their own on offense. Running back Justin Jackson reached 1,000 yards rushing for the third straight season, while wide receiver Austin Carr was one of the best receivers in the country this year. The Wildcats have been tough to predict at times this year though, and while they have the offense to keep up with Pittsburgh, I just don’t have enough confidence in their defense to be able to slow down Panthers.

Pittsburgh 42, Northwestern 31

Russell Athletic Bowl: No. 16 West Virginia v. Miami (-3) - 12/28 5:30 PM EST - ESPN

Mark Richt’s first season in charge of the Hurricanes was pretty much a tale of three seasons. Miami started the year with four straight wins, then lost four straight, and then closed out the season with four straight wins. So I guess this means they lose this one, right? Brad Kaaya had another strong season for the Hurricanes, throwing for 23 touchdowns, while Mark Walton rushed for just over 1,000 yards and scored 14 rushing touchdowns.

Had it not been for the two teams from Oklahoma in the Big 12, who knows where West Virginia might be bowling this year. Dana Holgorsen was able to remove some of the heat from his seat with a 10-2 regular, and a win against Miami will give the Mountaineers their first 11-win season since 2007. Surprisingly it hasn’t been all offense for West Virginia this year, as the Mountaineer defense has held it’s own in the Big 12.

I’m a little puzzled by this line. I think West Virginia is the better team, but for some reason Miami is laying the points. Probably a little too good to be true, but I’ll take the Mountaineers here. This should be a fun game between two talented teams, and hopefully it ends up with a West Virginia win.

West Virginia 30, Miami 27

Foster Farms Bowl: Indiana v. No. 19 Utah (-7) - 12/28 8:30 PM EST - FOX

A lot of people were surprised when head coach Kevin Wilson resigned earlier this month and defensive coordinator Tom Allen was tabbed to replace Wilson. Now in Allen’s first game he gets to face Utah head coach Kyle Whittingham, who has 9-1 in bowl games. The Hoosiers probably are feeling lucky to even be in a bowl game after they barely squeaked by Purdue 26-24 in the regular season finale.

Indiana’s defense is definitely improved this year, but it’ll be interesting to see if they can slow down Utah running back Joe Williams, who rushed for over 1,000 yards despite missing four games earlier this year due to a short-lived retirement. The Utes come into this bowl game having lost their last two games to Oregon and Colorado.

I feel like I’ve been terrible at picking Indiana games this year, so it’s probably wise to go with the opposite of what I pick. Indiana quarterback Richard Lagow has been a turnover machine this year, tossing 16 interceptions, so I’ll take Utah to make it 10-1 in bowl games under Whittingham.

Utah 31, Indiana 21

Texas Bowl: Texas A&M (-3) v. Kansas State - 12/28 9:00 PM EST - ESPN

Texas A&M probably wishes they could stop playing games after October. The Aggies are 6-8 the last three years in games after October. This year the last two wins Texas A&M had came against UT-San Antonio and New Mexico State. It isn’t going to help the Aggies will be missing third-leading receiver Speedy Noil, who will be suspended for this game.

Bill Snyder has done it again. I have no idea how the Wildcats made it to 8-4 this year, but here they are. Quarterback Jesse Ertz has accounted for 18 total touchdowns this year, but other than that I have no idea who Kansas State has. I’m sure that’s just the way that Snyder likes it.

Not only will this likely be the final game for defensive end Myles Garrett, but it definitely will be the final game for quarterback Trevor Knight, who returned from injury to play against LSU. I’m sure picking against Snyder will bite me, but I think the talent of Sumlin’s team wins out over the fundamental football of Snyder’s squad.

Texas A&M 27, Kansas State 20

LGHL Containing Clemson’s Wayne Gallman early on will be key for Ohio State

Clemson will look to establish the run early.

With the star power behind center and on the perimeter of the Clemson offense, it is surprisingly easy to forget about the running back who has racked up 2,529 yards and 28 touchdowns on the ground in the past two seasons — but Wayne Gallman is one of the best in the nation.

When looking at Gallman’s situational statistics, one thing in particular stands out: Clemson wants to establish the run early. Of his 196 carries, 70 have came in the first quarter. The next highest total attempts for a quarter is in the third, where he carried the ball only 46 times. When breaking down his numbers by the quarter, the first quarter represents the most rushing yards (394), yards per carry (5.63), touchdowns (7), first downs (19) and 10-plus gains (11) — and most aren’t that close. It is clear that the Tigers want to get Gallman the ball early to set up the passing game.

What separates the Clemson running back is his elusiveness in the hole. He has the ability to make a quick cut at the line of scrimmage to gain positive yardage, when most runners would have taken a loss. When watching some of his tape, there were multiple instances where he should have been stopped in the backfield or at the line of scrimmage, but he made a quick jump cut to elude the defensive lineman and get upfield.

Here’s a good example of Gallman showing his patience behind the blocker and making the safety bite on a nasty cutback before gaining good yardage.

Here’s another good example of the runner executing a jump cut out of a clogged hole, quickly cutting back to the original hole and gaining four yards when he should have been stopped for no gain.

Even with his elite elusiveness in the hole, he is sometimes let down by his inconsistent offensive line — especially in short yardage situations. They’ve only given the ball to their stud running back 11 times on third down with 1-3 yards to go, and he was only able to move the chains on three of those 11 opportunities. Quite the opposite of what Ohio State fans are used to in his power spread offense. In a high stakes game such as the College Football Playoff, the team who can typically control time of possession and keep the ball out of the other team’s hands will be given the better chance to advance.

Here’s Gallman getting stuffed at the line of scrimmage on a third-and-one against Auburn. He had no chance.

One part of Gallman’s game that would be appreciated by Buckeye fans, is his blocking ability. Per CFB Film Room, Gallman has allowed only four hurries, three hits and zero sacks on 158 pass blocking opportunities. Sure, it’s not to the level of Ezekiel Elliott or even Mike Weber (who only let up one hurry on 48 pass blocking attempts), but it has to be one of the better percentages in the country.

The Clemson back is also a strong lead blocker for Deshaun Watson, as shown here:

Overall, Ohio State will need to find a way to counter Clemson’s ground game in the first quarter. The Tigers want to establish the run early with their lead back, before opening up the passing game in the following quarters.

If Ohio State can get an early lead, they could force Clemson to go away from their ground game and make them one dimensional. Gallman is one of the shiftier backs in the country who can make something out of nothing, but the Buckeyes front seven does hold the advantage on third-and-short. It will be interesting to see if they break their tendency of staying away from Gallman on third and less than three yards, as it has yet to work this season.

Will Ohio State make Deshaun Watson beat them with his legs and arm? Or will they allow the Tigers to get things going on the ground? It’s sure to be a chess match.

The Buckeyes have put in work since their last regular season game.

Some of the Ohio State offensive weapons took time Tuesday to talk to the media ahead of the College Football Playoff Semifinal on New Year’s Eve. Lead by quarterback J.T. Barrett, the team is excited to face Clemson football, and expect to be ready for the challenge. Also speaking were offensive coordinator Ed Warinner, running back Mike Weber, offensive guard Billy Price, center Pat Elflein and halfback Curtis Samuel.

Ed Warinner

The first to speak with the media, the coach said they are striving to be a balanced offense, being able to run and pass it, but that they love their players — including J.T. — and just need to be efficient.

Warinner said he is familiar with Clemson’s defensive scheme and with their coordinator (Brent Venables) specifically, because he’s coached in the Big 12 against him, and then again a few years ago in the Orange Bowl. He did note that Clemson isn’t a team with a lot of tendencies, and them being unpredictable makes it hard to game plan.

The OC was asked if Samuel has been a marked man lately, drawing extra attention. Warinner admitted that teams are definitely aware of where the halfback is in certain situations.

He was also impressed with the young players on the offensive line and the fact that they are making big improvements even at this point in the season. Warinner said, “I like how they prepared. They need to play really well against a talented defensive front.”

The veteran duo of Billy Price and Pat Elflein have a good mindset heading into the semifinal game and have accepted the challenge of playing at a high level. Warinner lauded, “Wow, have they worked hard this December”, citing the amount of time they’ve put in with and without coaches.

They had some help this past week too as former Buckeyes came by to help them practice, including Bobby Carpenter — who ran drills as at OLB — and Zach Boren.

Curtis Samuel

The halfback said there were a lot of talented young guys last year who just didn’t get a chance to play much thanks to the loads of NFL draftees. He quipped “you can’t be mad about it” and is excited to get his chance to step up this year.

Pat Elflein

The center said that their pass protection has “gotten a lot better” since their last regular season game. He also noted that the young lineman have improved and by going against former Ohio State legends and a talented defensive group, they’ve been able to step up their games.

Elflein also said that going from 29 days until kickoff to just 4 really shows how fast time goes and how much everyday really matters.

On playing on one of the biggest stages in college football, Elflein replied, “I know Buckeye Nation will be here, they always travel and have our back.”

— Eric Seger (@EricSeger33) December 27, 2016

Billy Price

When asked if Ohio State needs to stretch the field, Price was succinct, saying “we just need to execute.”

Price is not underestimating Clemson’s defense. He clearly understands how important it will be for the linemen to get their hands up and really protect their quarterback. He cited their strength and size as possible day-killers for the Buckeyes.

— Jerod Smalley (@JerodNBC4) December 27, 2016

With so many young players, Price emphasized the importance of leadership and helping keep them focused with so many distractions.

On what makes his quarterback J.T. Barrett unique and what he means to the team, Price said, “The intense passion side of J.T., we live, eat die football, he’s able to reach a lot of people.”

Mike Weber

“We’re going to have ups and downs throughout the season,” the running back said on criticism they’ve faced. He said especially in a conference like the Big Ten, you’re not going to win every matchup.

Big players often show up big in games like this. Weber was asked what he thinks will happen Saturday, “I expect a really big game this weekend.” He continued, “I have to rely on my teammates, my offensive line to make that happen.”

Visualization is a big part of Weber’s preparation for games. He said he thinks about it all the time, for pretty much his whole life, and he’ll play like it’s the last game he’ll ever suit up and leave it all out on the field.

One of the Buckeyes last remaining targets in the 2017 recruiting class includes OSU in his top five schools.

Ohio State wrapped up its final practice in Ohio on Monday before heading out to Glendale, Ariz. for its match up versus Clemson in the PlayStation Fiesta Bowl. With a full schedule ahead of the team this week combined with a recruiting dead period, it would be reasonable if recruiting was put on the back-burner this week. However, recruiting is how Urban Meyer has built this program into a juggernaut and like usual, the Buckeyes still found themselves in the recruiting headlines Monday.

The biggest news of the day happened late Monday evening when one of Ohio State’s last remaining targets in the 2017 released his top five schools. Unsurprisingly, the Buckeyes made the cut.

Jay Tufele (South Jordan, UT / Bingham) has long been associated with the Buckeyes and the coaching staff has made it apparent that he is a priority for them while closing out the class. The four-star defensive tackle listed Ohio State among his final group of five, along with hometown school Utah, Michigan, BYU and USC.

— Jay Tufele (@tufele123) December 27, 2016

The Buckeyes have already successfully secured commitments from two of the country’s best DTs in the 2017 class in Haskell Garrett (Las Vegas, NV / Bishop Gorman) and Jerron Cage (Cincinnati, OH / Winton Woods) but it seems Urban Meyer would like to add at least one more.

Tufele would be a great addition to an already loaded 2017 class. Standing at 6-foot-3, 297 pounds, Tufele ranks as the fourth-best DT in the country, according to the 247Sports Composite Rankings, and lands at No.56 overall.

Tufele made an official visit to Ohio State back in November when the Buckeyes defeated Michigan in double overtime. He also made an official visit to Michigan in October with official visits scheduled for both USC and Utah in January of next year.

Utah is currently seen as the favorite to land Tufele but he has yet to give any clear indications of a single favorite school. Expect Ohio State to continue recruiting Tufele up until he makes a decision.

Future Buckeyes set to participate in Under Armour All-American Week

The Under Armour All-American game will take place this Sunday and will bring together some of the best high school football players in the country. Practices will begin this week leading up to Sunday’s match up.

The biggest name to watch for Buckeye fans during this week’s UA All-American week is Marvin Wilson (Bellaire, TX / Episcopal). The five-star DT is arguably the best player in the 2017 class and is a dominant force on the line.

Once seen as a long shot, the Buckeyes have been gaining steam in Wilson’s recruitment ever since his official visit for the Michigan game and are now seen as a legitimate contender.

Wilson has taken official visits to Oklahoma, Florida State and the Buckeyes. LSU will reportedly receive an official visit from Wilson next month. USC and Texas A&M are also heavily recruiting him. With a full schedule ahead of Wilson this week and plenty of press surrounding the event, there is a good possibility we could learn more about his recruitment this week.

Four-star defensive back Markquese Bell (Bridgetown, NJ/ Bridgetown) is another Buckeye target attending this week’s festivities. Bell is set to announce his commitment Sunday and the Buckeyes could be the school of choice.

Ohio State has been paying more attention to Bell in the last couple months, receiving an official visit from him back in November as well as having assistant coach Chris Ash visit him at home. That being said, Maryland seems to be the leader in his recruitment with Virginia Tech gaining momentum as well.

Three current Buckeye commits will also be in attendance for the All-American game this week including four-star DB Marcus Williamson (Bradenton, FL / IMG Academy) and his teammate four-star safety Isiah Pryor. The two will be joined by five-star WR Trevon Grimes (Fort Lauderdale, FL / St. Thomas Aquinas).
