LGHL Revisiting Ohio State’s exhilarating history with the Fiesta Bowl

Revisiting Ohio State’s exhilarating history with the Fiesta Bowl

The Buckeyes are getting set for their seventh Fiesta Bowl foray.

We’re less than a week away from what we’ve all been anxiously waiting for since The Spot Was Good.

Ohio State. Clemson. Fiesta Bowl.

Monday, the Buckeyes will arrive in Glendale, Arizona, to gland-hand the Yellow Blazer Brigade and commence final preparations for their College Football Playoff semifinal matchup. Next Saturday night will be Ohio State’s seventh Fiesta Bowl appearance, so what better time than now than to re-live the Buckeyes’ previous five encounters in the desert. Your boy wasn’t born yet when Ohio State competed in the 1980 (a 31-19 defeat by Penn State) or 1983 (a 28-23 win over Pittsburgh) Fiesta Bowls, so those two contests were omitted in this column.

Note: Florida’s romp over Ohio State in the 2007 BCS title game was played in Glendale but was not the actual Fiesta Bowl for the 2006-07 season — that honor went to Boise State and Oklahoma. The BCS increased from four games to five prior to that season, which provided the BCS sites with an additional BCS game once every five years. This is why the 2002-03 BCS title game between Ohio State and Miami was also a Fiesta Bowl game.

Got it? Good. Games were ranked by a combination of excitement and quality of play. Let’s go! (John Junker gift package sold separately.)

5. Jan. 1, 2016: Ohio State 44, Notre Dame 28

Some thought the defending national champs may not get up for this game after missing out on a chance to reach the College Football Playoff for the second year in a row. They postulated that a squad that would go on to have 11 of the first 102 players selected in the 2016 NFL Draft may not put forth maximum effort in what amounted to playoff consolation game between two teams that finished seventh (Ohio State) and eighth (Notre Dame) in the final playoff rankings.

They thought wrong.

The Buckeyes smacked the Fighting Irish upside the head with a 2x4 for much of the game, gashing Brian Kelly’s group for 285 yards on the ground and 496 total yards. The game lost some of its shine in the first quarter due to Ohio State’s incredible start (the Buckeyes were ahead 14-0 barely halfway through the first quarter) and because of a pair of player departures. On the Buckeyes’ second TD drive, Notre Dame star linebacker Jaylon Smith suffered a serious left knee injury that he still hasn’t fully recovered from. A few minutes later, Ohio State defensive lineman Joey Bosa was ejected for targeting.

The Buckeyes led by as much as 28-7 before half, but the Irish recovered to score just before intermission and again on their first possession of the third quarter to close to within 28-21. But, Ezekiel Elliott’s 47-yard TD run on Ohio State’s next drive restored order as the Buckeyes would go on to tack on three additional field goals.

The win upped the record of Ohio State’s senior class to 50-4, which tied Boise State’s 2011 seniors for the best mark in a four-year window.

4. Jan. 2, 2004: Ohio State 35, Kansas State 28

No. 4 and No. 5 on this list are essentially interchangeable, as they featured Ohio State teams coming off national championships.

Things weren’t so rosy at the start for the Buckeyes opposite the Wildcats, as their first two drives ended with a Craig Krenzel interception and a 3-and-out. But Ohio State’s defense held — the Silver Bullets forced the Wildcats to punt on their first six (!) possessions — and Ohio State’s offense eventually found its footing. Following John Hollins’ blocked punt return for a touchdown, Krenzel found Santonio Holmes and Michael Jenkins for a pair of TD passes before half.

Kansas State closed to 21-14 early in the third quarter, but Jenkins and Holmes reeled in two more TD passes to stretch the margin. The Wildcats actually recovered a late onside kick, but were whistled for a false start.

Other tidbits about this game: Kansas State QB Ell Roberson was permitted to play despite being accused of sexual assault by a woman earlier in the week. (Roberson was never charged.) ... Ohio State’s B.J. Sander punted seven times in the game, landing three inside the 20, which helped keep Darren Sproles (still in the NFL!) in check. Sproles was held to 10 yards on four punt returns, and also gained just 46 yards on 13 combined rushing and receiving touches. Sander would go to be a third round pick of the Green Bay Packers (lol). ... Jenkins moved ahead of David Boston for the program lead in receiving yards in this game, a record he still holds.

3. Jan. 2, 2006: Ohio State 34, Notre Dame 20

Each of Ohio State’s four touchdowns went for at least 56 yards as Troy Smith, Ted Ginn Jr., Santonio Holmes, and Antonio Pittman lit up the Tempe, Arizona, sky in Sun Devil Stadium’s Fiesta Bowl finale.

The Irish struck first on a 20-yard touchdown run by Darius Walker, but Buckeyes responded with three successive touchdowns: a 56-yard bomb to Ginn Jr.; a 68-yard run by Ginn Jr. off a reverse that Brent Musberger proclaimed a touchdown 40 yards before Ginn Jr. hit paydirt; and an 85-yard pass to Holmes, a play that was reminiscent of a Smith-to-Ginn Jr. connection in the 2006 Ohio State-Michigan game.

Ohio State, which finished with 617 yards of offense, kept Notre Dame in the game with two fumbles and a pair of missed field goals. The Irish crept to within 27-20 with five minutes and 27 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter, but Smith’s shades-of-Michigan escape-and-completion to Anthony Gonzalez with two and a half minutes left led to Pittman’s game-clinching 60-yard TD sprint.

2. Jan. 2, 2006: Texas 24, Ohio State 21

After Boom Herron burst through the Longhorn line to push the Buckeyes ahead 21-17 with 2:05 left in the game, I turned to the Texas fan (a guy I had been chatting with all game) sitting next to me inside University of Phoenix Stadium and said, “They scored too fast.”

Less than two minutes later, Ohio State made me a prophet. Colt McCoy found Quan Cosby for their 14th connection of the game, a 26-yard catch-and-run that send Ohio State to its third consecutive BCS setback. The Buckeyes yielded a very un-Silver-Bullets-like 468 yards, with McCoy finishing 41-of-58 for 414 yards.

Things looked very bleak for Ohio State as the third quarter ended. The Longhorns led 17-6 and the OSU offense had gone MIA. But, everything changed when Todd Boeckman found Brian Robiskie for 48 yards on 3rd-and-13 from the OSU 24 on the first play of the fourth frame. The Buckeyes settled for a field goal on that drive, but then added two straight touchdowns (with the Texas offense producing two punts), with the aforementioned score by Herron preceded by Boeckman’s TD toss to freshman QB Terrelle Pryor.

1. Jan. 3, 2003: Ohio State 31, Miami 24, 2OT

I own a VHS tape of this game, so if the apocalypse ever finds fruition, I only need a VCR, a television, and a working electrical outlet to re-watch this titanic struggle. Nearly 14 years after the game was played, it still stands as one of college football’s most exciting, holy-bleep-did-that-really-just-happen contests.

Ohio State’s disaster of a start on offense (three punts, an INT, a failed fake field goal on first five possessions). Maurice Clarett stripping Sean Taylor. Willis McGahee’s unsightly knee injury. Chris Gamble’s catch-to-potentially-ice-the-game-that-wasn’t. Todd Sievers’ kick to force overtime. Official Terry Porter’s late DPI flag in the first overtime. Cie Grant’s well-timed blitz to blow up Miami’s final chance.

As great a game as this was, the tilt wasn’t terribly well-played. Craig Krenzel completed just seven of 21 passes and threw a pair of picks, including one in the end zone. The Hurricanes turned the ball over five times. The Buckeyes logged nine penalties.

LGHL Joey Bosa is impressing NFL veterans

Joey Bosa is impressing NFL veterans
Geoff Hammersley

usa_today_9755244.0.jpeg

One current NFL star had some glowing words on the Chargers’ rookie.

“All of which is to say: because he's been shutting them down for a decade, it seems pretty likely that Thomas knows a good pass-rusher when he sees one. And he sure sees one in Joey Bosa, the No. 3 pick in the 2016 draft by the San Diego Chargers.”

– Jared Dubin, CBS Sports

Joey Bosa is having a pretty good rookie season. With two games left in the 2016 campaign, the former Buckeye pass-rusher/sacker/nightmare of offensive coaching staffs has 7.5 sacks – which is even more impressive when you remember that he was out of action for a handful of games at the beginning of the year.

Players in the NFL have taken notice of Bosa. Joe Thomas, who’s appeared in 10 Pro Bowls while also being named to 8 All-Pro squads, had some glowing words on Bosa.

As reported by Ohio.com and written about in CBS Sports, Thomas said that Bosa was “the most polished pass rusher I’ve ever seen.” In addition to the sacks, Bosa is indeed putting the heat on opposing quarterbacks. This season, he has an average of 4.9 pressures per game. In comparison, Super Bowl 50 MVP Von Miller is averaging 5.2 pressures per contest, as noted in Jared Dubin’s CBS Sports article.

While Bosa’s stock and stats are on the rise, he wasn’t voted into the Pro Bowl. If he keeps things up, there should be no question that Bosa will be part of the Pro Bowl next season.

“There’s no shot that she can’t make, won’t take. She gets a head of steam up, forget it. You’re not going to stop her.”

– Connecticut women’s basketball coach Geno Auriemma on OSU star Kelsey Mitchell, The New York Times

Onto the hardwood. The New York Times wrote up a piece that looked into Buckeye basketball star Kelsey Mitchell’s rise in the college hoops universe.

After being put into a youth boy’s game at her request—and picking up a decent stat line— Mitchell’s path (and focus) to becoming a top player has been paved with hours and hours spent at the basketball court. The upside to all those hours sunk into becoming a proficient basketball player show up in the games; Mitchell has been able to make spectacular dibbles, shots and everything in-between.

This season, the Buckeyes lost to the Connecticut Huskies, one of the most dominant programs in women’s basketball, but the praise of Mitchell’s play-making abilities were talked about by Huskies head coach Geno Auriemma.

Already this season, Mitchell became the fastest player to reach 2,000 points in a career. But, as the New York Times articles notes, the journey doesn’t end here. With Mitchell being able to declare for the WNBA Draft, her next journey could be wowing the professional basketball circuit in the same way she wowed the college basketball.

“The Ohio State (loss) is going to sting,” Speight said this week. “We could blow out Florida State and be 11-2 and we could go next year and be 15-0 and win a national championship, and I’m still going to think back to that game. That’s just one that doesn’t go away no matter how successful or unsuccessful you are down the road.”

– Michigan quarterback Wilton Speight, Detroit News

And lastly, we go back to the gridiron. Actually, we’ll go back in time a little bit as Michigan Wolverine world is still talking about the lost to Ohio State.

In preparation for the Orange Bowl, Wolverine QB Wilton Speight talked about the effect of losing to the Buckeyes in overtime. Speight, who was said to have an injured no throwing shoulder in The Game, played through the pain in the defeat. It should also be noted that Speight was going to play against Ohio State regardless of the condition of his shoulder. While the injury could have had lasting effects, he said that he wasn’t going to to give up on his teammates before the biggest game of the regular season.

But, the main takeaway from the Speight article in the Detroit News was that the loss at OSU won’t go away anytime soon. For Speight, he alluded to the fact that the coaching staff will help him progress as a player, and now with an exodus of talent, will allow him to step into the role of a leader. All of this signifies that Speight will get another crack at the Buckeyes in next year’s edition of The Game, however, the 30-27 OSU victory has been seared into the long-term memory and lore of the rivalry between the two schools.

Who knows, next year’s edition of The Game could come down to inches, too.

The awards aren’t stopping for the future Buckeyes.

Martell named USA Today OPOY

Just one day removed from 2017 cornerback Shaun Wade — an Ohio State pledge — out of Trinity Christian Academy (FL) was named American Family Insurance All-USA Defensive Player of the Year by USA Today, another future Buckeye on the other side of the ball received similar honors.

After putting together a senior campaign at Bishop Gorman (NV) that consisted of over 2,300 yards and 41 touchdowns through the air with just one interception and 1,257 yards and 21 scores on the ground, 2017 quarterback Tate Martell was named American Family Insurance All-USA Offensive Player of the Year by USA Today.

Martell, as you can see, put together an incredible season and led the Gaels to an undefeated 15-0 year that ended with a Nevada State Championship. The four-star QB went out on top after scoring a combined five times in a 84-8 win over Liberty (NV) in his final official contest before heading to Columbus.

Thoughts on Davis

Two days ago, Ohio State hired former NFL defensive coordinator Bill Davis to join their staff at the conclusion of the season. Davis, who has spent just one year in the college ranks, in all likelihood will be the replacement for Luke Fickell, who took the head coaching gig at Cincinnati.

Make no mistake, Davis will definitely bring plenty of knowledge and overall football experience to Ohio State. However, it is alarming that his only collegiate coaching experience was back in 1991 as a Graduate Assistant at Michigan State.

No one really knows how Davis will adapt to coaching at the college level. With that being said, being a good recruiter is a must at Ohio State. It is not set in stone what areas Davis will cover. All we can do is look at where Davis could bring a boost to the Buckeyes recruiting efforts.

First things first, Davis graduated from the University of Cincinnati. One would imagine that he may be able to help in that area and it's definitely not a bad time for a boost there with the 2018 talent in the Queen City. Five-star offensive tackle Jackson Carman, a major Ohio State target, is nearby. Also, '18 linebacker Christopher Oats and '18 defensive tackle Aeneas Hawkins are two top targets from the 513 and they attend Winton Woods (OH) and Archbishop Moeller (OH), respectively. It is worth mentioning that Kerry Coombs is undoubtedly the main guy for this area. However, especially in Oats case, having a linebacker coach who pitches in to help in the city isn't a bad thing.

It's also worth mentioning that Davis was born in Youngstown, Ohio. Anytime you can get more help within your own state, that's a plus. Especially when programs like Michigan, Michigan State and Notre Dame are all doing everything they can to get their foot in the door in Ohio.

Lastly, as mentioned above, Davis spent a season at MSU as a GA. Does that mean he will help immensely in enemy territory? Not necessarily. With that being said, maybe it counts for something. Ohio State has made noise in the state of Michigan for the past for years. They will likely be shut out this year after losing out on '17 wide receiver Donovan Peoples-Jones, however, any boost in that specific state would be huge.
