The spring game proved little and Urban Meyer has said even less about it.

They don’t get much in the way of attention, but backup quarterbacks are among the most important players on any football team.

Just ask Cardale Jones, coach Urban Meyer and his 2015 national champion Ohio State Buckeyes.

For a less extreme example, consider former quarterback Kenny Guiton and his heroics against Purdue in 2012. In one of the more memorable Buckeye contests of the Meyer era, Guiton stepped in for an injured Braxton Miller and led a game-tying drive, later defeating the Boilermakers in overtime to preserve a perfect season.

The backup job at OSU has become even more valuable given the oft-injured signal-callers of previous seasons. It’s a position that is still up in the air in Columbus.

With J.T. Barrett solidified as the starter, the battle for the No. 2 spot will be fought for by Joe Burrow and Dwayne Haskins.

A pro-style quarterback, Burrow served as the Buckeyes primary backup for the past year and returns as the man to beat. While he didn’t have the same notoriety that Haskins did coming out of high school, the Ohio native has played well when his number’s been called, albeit in garbage time. Burrow passed for 226 yards and two touchdowns in 2016, tacking on an additional 58 yards and a TD on the ground.

Then there’s the fan favorite in Haskins, who has the potential to start for OSU in 2018 when Barrett is no longer with the program. He redshirted last season and has grown exponentially since. Haskins possesses a cannon for an arm and has the wheels needed to really thrive in Meyer’s offense.

Do ya thing playa, Get that money.. pic.twitter.com/Yj0zoeOFsP

— Dwayne Haskins, Jr (@dh_simba7) April 18, 2017

And although you’d think the annual spring game would’ve provided some clarity, it didn’t. In fact, the exact opposite happened.

Haskins – as seen above – was about as good as it gets, finishing with 293 passing yards and three touchdowns. Not to be outdone, Burrow threw for 252 yards and three touchdowns – all in the first half.

Afterwards, Meyer had no answer as to who will be Barrett’s backup.

“We haven't had that [conversation] yet. I know it is very close. But I'm not prepared to say who is No. 2, who is No. 3, et cetera, yet.”

-Urban Meyer, via Austin ward of ESPN

When all’s said and done, it’s clear that both quarterbacks are fully capable of leading the Buckeyes revamped offense.

Haskins ability to move and escape the pocket may end up being the tiebreaker come Week 1, but it wouldn’t at all be surprising to see Burrow remain as the No. 2 guy, for now.

This is familiar territory for Meyer and the Buckeyes, as it always seems like they’re burdened with the problem of having too much of a good thing.

What a shame.

MotS&G Things That Have Happened Since Michigan Last Beat Ohio State In Football

Things That Have Happened Since Michigan Last Beat Ohio State In Football
Billy George
via our good friends at Men of the Scarlet and Gray
Visit their fantastic blog and read the full article (and so much more) here

When you’re a fan of arguably the most successful program in the history of college football, the Ohio State Buckeyes, you have a lot to brag about. However, for every single success story that is published or brought up in conversation about the men who have essentially made the sport of college football a secular religion in Ohio over the course of 100+ years, you have a Michigan naysayer around to remind you that the Womanrines have more total wins, more conference titles, more national titles, and have more wins in the rivalry.

For their sake alone, I have written this article. First and foremost, I would like to mention that, as of today, it has been 2,057 days since Michigan has beaten Ohio State in football. Their last win versus the Buckeyes came in 2011 when Ohio State was in between head coaches and had a true freshman at quarterback.

That was the year Luke Fickell was Ohio State’s interim head coach and the Buckeyes had their first losing record in 23 years. Of course that happened to be the year the Wolverines finally topped the Buckeyes (for the first time since 2003). Since then, however, be it due to controversial calls or utter dominance, the Wolverines have failed to beat their cross-state counterparts.

In the time since, a whole heck of a lot of things have happened. Thanks to Wikipedia and onthisday.com, I was able to concoct a small list of such things. Without further ado, here are some of the things that have happened since the Wolverines’ last victory over the Buckeyes on November 26, 2011:

  • December 18, 2011 – Withdrawal of U.S. troops from Iraq: The last United States troops withdrew from Iraq under the terms of the U.S.–Iraq Status of Forces Agreement.
  • September 11, 2012 – The Benghazi attack: An attack that was coordinated against two United States government facilities in Benghazi, Libya by members of the Islamic militant group Ansar al-Sharia.
  • October 25–30, 2012: Hurricane Sandy: A devastating hurricane wreaks havoc for the Eastern United States coast.
  • November 6, 2012: United States presidential election, 2012: Barack Obama is reelected as president.
  • December 14, 2012: Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting: Occurs in Newtown, Connecticut killing 20 Children and 6 Staff Members
  • January 20, 2013: Barack Obama is inaugurated for his second term as president.
  • April 15, 2013: Boston Marathon bombings: Two pressure cooker bombs explode during the Boston Marathon
  • April 16, 2014: Malaysia Airlines Flight of Malaysian airlines went missing and hasn’t been seen since.
  • May 23, 2014: 2014 Isla Vista killings occurs, killing 6, and wounding 14 others, perpetrated by elliot rodger.
  • June 2014: President Obama orders the return of a small number of troops to Iraq to help bolster Iraqi and Kurdish military forces
  • August 9, 2014: Michael Brown was shot and killed, in what was ruled by a grand jury to be self-defense, by police officer Darren Wilson in Ferguson, Missouri, igniting protests and riots in the following months.
  • November 3, 2014: New building, 1 World Trade Center, opens in New York City.
  • December 17, 2014: President Obama announces a restoration of full diplomatic relations with Cuba for the first time since 1961.
  • April 27, 2015: Baltimore protests: Protests and rioting occur in Baltimore, Maryland after the death of Freddie Gray in police custody.
  • June 17, 2015: Charleston church shooting: A gunman killed 9, including a state senator in a church in Charleston, South Carolina.
  • June 26, 2015: Gay marriage is fully legalized in all 50 states
  • July 20, 2015: Restoration of relations with Cuba.
  • December 22, 2015 San Bernardino attack: Rizwan Farook and Tashfeen Malik, a married radical Muslim couple, kills 14 people at a center for the developmentally disabled.
  • June 11, 2016: Orlando Nightclub Shooting: A self-proclaimed Islamic State fighter, Omar Mateen, kills 49 and injures 53 at a gay nightclub in Orlando, before being shot and killed by an officer.
  • July 7, 2016: Shooting of Dallas police officers: Micah Xavier Johnson ambushed and fired upon a group of police officers in Dallas, Texas, killing five officers and injuring nine others. Two civilians were also wounded.
  • August 12–22, 2016: Louisiana floods and prolonged rainfall in southern parts of the U.S. state of Louisiana resulted in catastrophic flooding that submerged thousands of houses and businesses.
  • August 13, 2016: Milwaukee riots: A riot began in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, sparked by the fatal police shooting of 23-year-old Sylville Smith.
  • November 8, 2016: Donald Trump wins the 2016 presidential election
  • January 20, 2017: Donald Trump is inaugurated as the forty-fifth president of the United States
  • February 22, 2017: Discovery of 7 Earth-sized planets orbiting star Trappist-1 announced in Journal “Nature” – raises possibility of alien life
  • March 22, 2017: Terrorist attack on London’s Westminster Bridge and Houses of Parliament kills 4 including a police officer and injures 40
  • May 10, 2017: President Donald Trump shares classified information about ISIS plot with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and Ambassador Sergey Kislyak in the Oval Office
  • June 2, 2017: Trump announces the US is withdrawing from the Paris Climate Agreement
  • July 5, 2017: 101 people reported shot, 15 killed in Chicago, Illinois over 4th July weekend

It’s safe to say that for Wolverines fans, a win versus Ohio State is long overdo. This explains why so many of them were so upset about the double overtime fourth down spot in the 2016 edition of “The Game”. Nevertheless, it has still been over 2,000 days since Michigan has beaten Ohio State in football.

This list could have literally been 100 pages long.

Can the Buckeyes land yet another elite 4-star?

In case you weren't already keeping track, today marks only 48 days from Buckeye football kicking off. With fall camp fast approaching, the Buckeyes have to be pinning their ears back to what will most likely be a season of emotion geared toward redemption. Until August 31, however, recruiting will never take a backseat in Columbus and as usual, whether football or basketball, Ohio State never slows down.

Elite DT keeps OSU in it

Probably unfair to say, but up until this year Ohio State has been somewhat known for landing their top pick at every position, but defensive tackle. Pulling an elite player in that position can be pretty difficult especially when they're from the South. However, this 2018 recruiting class has already proven that "thought" wrong when they landed IMG Academy's Taron Vincent, the top defensive tackle in the country. One elite defensive tackle is awesome, but adding a second would be the icing on the cake for Urban Meyer and defensive line coach Larry Johnson.

Yesterday, a step in that direction may have taken place when the second best defensive tackle in the country, Michael Thompson Jr. (St. Louis, MO/Parkway North) trimmed his list to a final five schools he will be considering before making his commitment. A prospect that is considered the best in all of Missouri in 2018 with nearly 25 offers, narrowing his list down to five is pretty detailed.

Top 5❗❗❗❗pic.twitter.com/3sOMavVsk5

— Michael Thompson Jr (@mthompson201) July 14, 2017

Making the cut were Alabama, LSU, Michigan, Missouri and Ohio State. With the leader thought to be the in-state Mizzou Tigers, Ohio State is keeping this race close enough. It’s important to note that one recent recruiting battle between Ohio State and Mizzou went in the Buckeyes’ favor. That prospect? Ezekiel Elliott.

ESPN's newest rankings

Earlier this week, 247sports updated their latest recruiting rankings which moved Ohio State to the No. 2 overall class in the country trailing only Miami, but with five fewer members of the class, the Buckeyes are sure regain their place eventually.

Yesterday, ESPN was next in line to update their recruiting rankings and Ohio State's 2018 class was easily feeling the love. With four current commits in the top 25, six in the top 50, nine in the top 100, and 13 in the top 300, the Buckeyes have proven to each and every recruiting service that they are fully loaded on all fronts of their recruiting efforts. ESPN in fact has Ohio State on top at No. 1 in the country for their current 2018 class.

Top 50 commits in new ESPN 300 (29 committed)

Ohio State: 6
Clemson: 3
Tennessee: 3
Penn State: 2
Texas: 2
FSU: 2
Miami: 2
9 teams with 1

— Tom VanHaaren (@TomVH) July 13, 2017

Brenton Cox, Taron Vincent, Matthew Jones, Emory Jones, Jaelen Gill and Teradja Mitchell were included in the top 50 and with loads of more top prospects such as Jeremy Ruckert, Micah Parsons, and in-state stud Jackson Carman all highly considering Ohio State, the Buckeyes may in fact win the ever-so-popular recruiting national championship finally slaying the Alabama dragon who has won that feat time and time again.

Two for one would be fun

It's been said several times before already, but while 2018 remains the primary focus for Buckeye football recruiting, it's never too early to start looking into the future and to classes like 2019. With the momentum the Ohio State staff is having over the years and currently, it's no surprise that they're taking their positive energy and looking to the next classes and beyond.

Yesterday, in an article with Bill Kurelic of Bucknuts.com, 2019 was the topic of discussion as two Georgia prospects are high on what the Buckeyes have to offer. Teammates Jashawn Sheffield and Jaylin Simpson hail from Frederica Academy in Saint Simons Island, Ga., and have many things in common. One being their genuine interest in Ohio State—but one more than the other.

Defensive back Jaylin Simpson, a four-star, 6-foot, 170-pound stud of an athlete was quoted that the Buckeyes are No. 1 in his mind and lead for his recruitment. Sheffield, a name not new to Buckeye fans, was thought to be an early Ohio State lean, however, now has Clemson at two and Florida State at the top ahead of the Buckeyes. A four-star receiver in the 2019 class, Urban Meyer will surely be in his ear trying to get the Scarlet and Gray at the top of his list when all is said and done. While it's still very early in both of these two teammates' recruitment, one thing remains true regardless, two is better than one and Ohio State would love to keep these two together at the next level.

The new Buckeye head coach tries to dispell some of the criticism he has received for leaving for Ohio State.

EXCLUSIVE: Coach Holtmann addresses fan criticism and dispels myths regarding how he left Butler. https://t.co/gAx2wlZWC5 pic.twitter.com/Yv5tbp00NP

— Jared Grubbs (@ButlerWay) July 13, 2017

It’s easy to understand how Butler fans can get frustrated at constantly seeing their coaches use the program as a stepping stone to higher profile jobs. Last month Chris Holtmann was hired as Ohio State’s head coach after the Buckeyes parted ways with Thad Matta, who came to Ohio State from Butler in July 2001. Todd Lickliter coached Butler for six seasons before leaving for Iowa. After Lickliter came Brad Stevens, who took the program to two straight national title games before eventually moving on to the Boston Celtics. All Holtmann did for Butler was lead them to three NCAA Tournament appearances in three seasons, and earn 2017 Big East Coach of the Year honors.

After a Butler Hoops article critical of the way Holtmann left last month got back to Holtmann, the new Ohio State head coach wanted to set the record straight. Holtmann cleared up a tweet he sent in June about getting ready for this year’s Butler team, saying at the time he sent the tweet he had already turned down a meeting with Ohio State athletic director Gene Smith and was leaning towards staying with Butler.

Holtmann also described the process of not only bringing his three assistant coaches from Butler with him to Ohio State, but also how Kyle Young followed him to Ohio State. Young had already been considering Ohio State during his recruitment, and with assistant coach Ryan Pedon coming to Columbus with Holtmann, it pretty much sealed the deal that Young wouldn’t be going to Butler.

Holtmann did give Butler fans a reason to be excited about the future, as he had high praise for new head coach LaVall Jordan. Also, Holtmann was complimentary about the resources and the fans at Butler. While it was a tough decision for Holtmann to make in the end, the opportunity to move on to Ohio State was just too much for him to pass up.

The @TheFWAA announced respective Outland Trophy and Bronko Nagurski Trophy watch lists. Incl. 6 from @OhioStateFB https://t.co/EUJMKNuPNb

— Jerry Emig (@BuckeyeNotes) July 13, 2017

Being one of the best teams in the country brings with it plenty of preseason honors, and it was no different earlier today when six Buckeyes were named to the FWAA Outland Trophy and Bronko Nagurski Trophy watch lists. The Outland Trophy is awarded annually to the nation’s outstanding interior lineman, while the Bronko Nagurski Trophy is awarded to the national defensive player of the year.

Since its inception in 1946, four Buckeyes have won the Outland Trophy, with the most recent coming in 1996, when Orlando Pace took home the award. Offensive tackle Jamarco Jones and center Billy Price were both named to this year’s Outland Trophy watch list, along with 80 other offensive linemen and defensive tackles. Price was also named to the Rimington Trophy watch list, which is awarded to the nation’s best center.

Defensive ends Sam Hubbard, Tyquan Lewis, Nick Bosa, as well as linebacker Jerome Baker, were all named this year’s Bronko Nagurski Trophy watch list. Baker, Bosa, and Lewis were earlier named to the Bednarik Award watch list as well, which is awarded by the Maxwell Football Club to the nation’s best defensive player. The Bronko Nagurski Trophy was first awarded in 1993, and the only Buckeye to win the award was linebacker James Laurinaitis in 2006.

“Coach Richardson brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to our program. He is an incredible leader and builder of young men. We look for him to make an immediate impact as we prepare for the 2018 season and beyond.”

-Ohio State men’s lacrosse coach Nick Myers via Colin Hass-Hill, The Lantern

After men’s basketball coach Thad Matta was fired last month, strength and conditioning coach was wondering what his future would hold. Richardson was hired by Matta in 2005 and spent the last 12 years with the program. Last Friday it was announced that former Indianapolis Colts performance and conditioning coach Quadrian Banks would be the new strength and conditioning coach for the men’s basketball team.

Richardson will be staying with Ohio State though, as it was announced that he is the new strength and conditioning coach for the men’s lacrosse team. While Richardson has never worked as strength and conditioning coach for a lacrosse team, he does know Myers, and what the head coach expects. Ohio State’s men’s lacrosse team just had their best season in school history, making it to the NCAA title game before falling 9-6 to Maryland. The addition of Richardson will help to ensure the Buckeyes are in top physical condition in 2018, as they look build on their success from 2017.

LOS ANGELES, CA – DECEMBER 04: Marian Gaborik #12 of the Los Angeles Kings skates after a puck against the Montreal Canadiens at Staples Center on December 4, 2016 in Los Angeles, California. (Photo by Harry How/Getty Images)

Shortly after the 2017 NHL Draft, Sportnet‘s Elliotte Friedman created a bit of a stir by mentioning in his ‘30 Thoughts‘ column that “Ottawa GM Pierre Dorion had a lengthy conversation with Los Angeles compatriot Rob Blake during the later rounds of the draft.”

At the time, Friedman surmised that the Senators could be discussing the parameters of a Dustin Brown for Dion Phaneuf trade because “both have the same cash remaining — $25.5 million. Brown’s AAV is lower ($5.875 million to Phaneuf’s $7 million), but he has five years left on his contract to Phaneuf’s four. The Senator defenceman can go to Los Angeles, but I’m not sure if Brown’s list allows him to go to the Canadian capital.”

Aside from spreading the money out over a longer period of time, the deal as Friedman never really made that much sense. Having just lost Marc Methot, another top-four defenceman, to Vegas in the expansion draft earlier that week, it never really made much sense for the Senators to move a player who logs big minutes on the blue line for a redundant depth forward just so that the organization could enjoy some short-term budget relief.

In his latest ‘30 Thoughts‘ column that was published today, Friedman addressed his concocted Phaneuf/Brown proposal before explaining that it wasn’t Brown who the two teams were actually discussing.

When I speculated a couple of weeks ago that a Kings-Senators deal involving Dustin Brown and Dion Phaneuf made sense because the money is almost even, I think I guessed the wrong L.A. player. More likely, they were discussing Marian Gaborik.”

Although such a trade would still leave the Senators with having to fill two holes in their top-four on defence, it seems pretty apparent that the Senators’ willingness to move Phaneuf has less to do with the Senators making a hockey move as much as it has to do with dumping Phaneuf’s contract.

Here’s a look at what’s remaining on each player’s respective contract:

Contract Remaining
Dion Phaneuf 4 years, $25.5-million
Marian Gaborik 4 years, $15.9-million

The Senators would save almost $10-million over the course of the next four years, assuming that the 35-year old Gaborik would not retire before his contract ended. Perhaps most importantly, if Gaborik were to retire before his contract ended, the money owed would not count against the Senators’ cap because it’s not a 35-plus contract. In other words, because Gaborik did not sign a multi-year contract when he was 35 years old or older, his individual cap hit will not count against the team’s cap hit if he elects to retire. (Not that it would really matter that much, mind you. It’s not like the small-market Senators have flirted with the cap ceiling or will be expected to over the next few seasons.)

What the Senators would have done with the savings is subject to debate.

There’s no question that Phaneuf offers greater value to the Senators than this shell of what Gaborik once was, but maybe the Senators would have reallocated the money to bring in another defenceman or maybe Eugene Melnyk simply would have pocketed the savings because the negotiations were driven strictly by a motivation to slash payroll.

Who knows?

My suspicion is that the negotiations were driven by a motivation to slash payroll, but maybe the organization would be better served if it stopped signing superfluous depth pieces to expensive contracts. The deals awarded to players like Colin Greening, Jared Cowen, Milan Michalek, Alex Burrows, Nate Thompson are damaging and easily avoidable. Anyone with their finger on the pulse of this team did not need the benefit of hindsight to know that these were bad deals at the time they were made.

Of course, it’s easy for me to say that when I’m not in the general manager’s chair and don’t have an impulsive owner breathing down my neck.

PITTSBURGH, PA – MAY 25: Viktor Stalberg #24 of the Ottawa Senators reacts as Sidney Crosby #87 of the Pittsburgh Penguins and Chris Kunitz #14 of the Pittsburgh Penguins celebrate after Kunitz scored the game winning goal in double overtime in Game Seven of the Eastern Conference Final during the 2017 NHL Stanley Cup Playoffs at PPG Paints Arena on May 25, 2017 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. After promising fans news on Viktor Stalberg’s future by Monday, it was announced yesterday that the Swedish winger had signed a two-year contract with the Zug hockey club in Switzerland.

Meaning that in two years, the Senators will sign Stalberg out of Switzerland because Guy Boucher has seen him play.

It’s an interesting development considering the Senators’ playoff run and the fact that the team wound up paying a third round price to bring Stalberg’s speed and penalty killing ability into the lineup. They obviously wanted the player, so it feels a bit weird to see him leave as an unrestricted free agent now.

A lot of fans romanticize Stalberg’s play because of his speed. In a league where the game is only getting faster and such a large emphasis is being placed on quickness, Stalberg was noticeably faster than many of his bottom-six counterparts.

His public support certainly didn’t stem from his numbers however.

In fact, perhaps the most interesting thing for me to see is how different the perception of the two players who were acquired around the same time near the 2017 trade deadline is.

Via Puckalytics.com, here’s how Stalberg fared relative to Burrows players after they joined the Senators in late February:

5v5 Burrows Stalberg
TOI 233:28 205:19
G/60 0.71 0.64
Pts/60 1.62 0.88
GF% 64.7 40.0
CF% 48.00 50.11
Sh% 8.6 9.09
Shots/60 8.40 7.02

There’s no question that Burrows benefited from better linemates and better fortune during the regular season and that carried over through the postseason (stats via NaturalStatTrick.com).

5v5 Burrows Stalberg
TOI 167:55 187:22
SCF% 46.85 47.80
SF% 48.08 48.44
GF% 63.64 25.00
CF% 49.54 48.03

Both players were held goalless during the postseason, but they shared relatively similar underlying metrics. The difference was: 1) Burrows continued to ride the PDO-wave and because of it, the Senators scored a greater percentage of goals when he was on the ice than when Stalberg was; and 2) the expectations for either player differed because of the price paid to acquire them.

The Senators made a significant commitment trading blue chip prospect Jonathan Dahlen to the Vancouver Canucks for Burrows before even committing to a two-year contract extension worth $5.0-million to ensure that Burrows would waive his no-trade clause and spend his age 36 through 38-years old seasons in the nation’s capital.

Contrasting that with the handling of Stalberg, who was acquired for a third round pick and is now out of the NHL, it’s interesting to see how different the view of these relatively comparable players is.

Neither player played particularly well, but the best thing you can say about either is that they weren’t Chris Neil or Chris Kelly. Their presence relegated the worst players on the Senators’ roster to the press box and that’s where their value is held.

And now one is gone.

Between Clarke MacArthur’s return from a concussion, Tom Pyatt’s contract extension, the signing of Nate Thompson as an unrestricted free agent and the presence of a few prospects who have a chance to play their way onto the roster, the Senators’ forward ranks were already pretty congested so it’s easy to understand why the two parties failed to come to terms on a new deal.

Stalberg had to realize that there simply wasn’t much room on the roster and that he signed in Europe leads me to believe that he had his own personal reasons for wanting to play closer to home.

But now that he’s gone, the only thing left to do is hope that the Senators will not be in a similar situation at next year’s trade deadline where they search for costly upgrades on depth players because the guys here just aren’t getting the job done.

We’re counting down the most important Buckeyes for the 2017 season.

When looking at the 2017 depth chart compared to the 2016 depth chart, there are noticeable holes, but the team is in a much better place now than it was entering the 2016 season after a mass exodus of NFL departures and graduation. Using key departures, spotlighting players at important positions, leadership qualities, and recognizing the depth at each position, we came up with the 10 most important players on the team. They may not be the most heralded players, or even the best players, but they will be vital to this team’s on-field success.

No. 8: Jerome Baker

Position: WILL linebacker

2016 stats: 83 TOT, 9.5 TFL, 3.5 sacks, 2 INT, 1 TD

Why he’s No. 8: Ohio State’s WILL (weakside) linebacker position, or most recently known as the walk-out linebacker spot, has been home to athletic freaks such as Ryan Shazier and Darron Lee, but one could argue that Jerome Baker could actually be the best of the extremely talented bunch.

As we saw during Ohio State’s national championship season and the following season, Darron Lee was the defense’s top playmaker — walking out to cover or beat up the player in the slot, forcing fumbles, dropping back in coverage, making plays at or behind the line of scrimmage, or even coming off the edge in key situations. The position has turned into the defense’s Swiss-Army Knife position, where the staff situates their most athletically gifted linebacker to the weak side of the formation and against a spread offense, he is typically lined up over the slot in their 4-3 Over defense. 2015’s No. 4 ranked athlete in the country will utilize his elite skillset to do as such in 2017.

Arguably Ohio State’s most consistent defensive playmaker outside of Malik Hooker in 2016, Baker shined in every aspect of his position: whether it’s flying through the A-gap to tackle the ball carrier for a loss, setting the edge on perimeter runs, dropping back and picking off a pass, or executing a well-timed blitz, Baker can do it all.

What makes Baker even more valuable is his play in the biggest of games. Against Oklahoma — in his second career start — Baker returned an interception for a 68-yard touchdown. At Camp Randall in Ohio State’s overtime victory over No. 8 Wisconsin, Baker tallied 13 tackles, including a huge tackle-for-loss on third down. And against No. 3 Michigan, he racked up a career-high 15 tackles and a key interception which led to a Buckeye touchdown to cut the deficit to three points.

Like our No. 9 most important player Parris Campbell, it would make sense to argue that Baker should be a few spots higher. But just like Campbell, if Baker went down, the depth chart is loaded with special athletes who could take over and do an admirable job. They could flip Dante Booker, last year’s opening game WILL linebacker starter, back to the weakside, or give the young and talented Keandre Jones or true freshman stud Baron Browning a chance to shine.

There’s no doubt about it; Jerome Baker is one of the most valuable players on this team and with the departure of key members of the secondary, he could be this defense’s top playmaker and a first round draft pick, just like Shazier and Lee.
