Cardale Jones is in another QB competition, but this time for the No. 2 spot with the Buffalo Bills

Can 12-Gauge climb up the Bills’ depth chart?

“He is the rawest quarterback on Buffalo’s roster but has far and away the best tools. Blessed with size and a cannon for an arm, Jones offers considerable upside.”

-Joe Marino, Fan Rag Sports Network

Former Ohio State quarterback Cardale Jones filled the No. 3 spot on the Buffalo Bills roster during his rookie season, behind starter Tyrod Taylor and back-up E.J. Manuel. Manuel is no longer with the team, leaving Jones in a position to battle a rookie for the No. 2 role. He’ll be competing with the Bills fifth-round pick from the 2017 NFL Draft, Nathan Peterman.

Despite Jones still being considered raw, as Marino noted above, all of the factors that led to his “12-Gauge” nickname at Ohio State could keep the Bills interested in his development. After all, how many quarterbacks can really sling the ball over 60-yards from on their knees?

The Buckeye also has to deal with having a new head coach in Buffalo, after having established a relationship with Rex Ryan. The former head coach called Jones with the news that his child was being born and told the quarterback to head straight to the airport. It’s this kind of personal relationship that benefited the second-year NFL player and could affect his development moving forward.

"We are aware of the incident regarding Adolphus Washington and have been in contact with him. Since it is a pending legal matter, we will have no further comment."

-Buffalo Bills team statement, via Bob Strickley, Cincinnati Enquirer

During the 2016 NFL Scouting Combine, Washington was forced to answer to both teams and the media about his first arrest, that kept him out of the Fiesta Bowl earlier that year. The Buckeye was arrested following the 2015 regular season for soliciting a prostitute, and was suspended by head coach Urban Meyer as a result.

Now, the defensive lineman is facing his second charge in as many years. He was arrested on a firearms charge — improperly carrying a concealed firearm -- last Sunday, outside a Sharonville, OH waterpark, before being released later than night.

According to a Sharonville police report obtained by the Cincinnati Enquirer, Washington "reached for and displayed a gun while sitting inside his vehicle; just feet away from officers. The suspect did not inform officers beforehand."

TMZ later released video of the tense stand-off between Washington and officers.

Washington hasn’t made a public statement since his arrest, but the legal ramifications could be just a drop in the bucket depending on what the Bills and the NFL decided to do.

“Some are already saying that Ward could be Ohio State’s next first round pick at the position, and because I cannot dispute that given his talent level, he is a true wild card in the 2018 NFL draft’s cornerback class.”

-Jonah Tuls, Draft Breakdown

Draft Twitter never takes a break, and with the 2017 NFL Draft in hindsight, analysts are already getting a headstart on the 2018 draft class. Already being heavily discussed in the early conversations is Ohio State cornerback Denzel Ward.

With a strong season, Ward could carry on the recent tradition of Buckeye cornerbacks being taken in the first round of the draft. In 2016, it was Eli Apple. In 2017, it was Marshon Lattimore and Gareon Conley. Will Ward be next?

His size will undoubtedly be criticized by scouts, standing at 5’10, but his speed and footwork make up for it. Ward had 23 total tackles and broke up nine passes last season — three pass breakups came against Nebraska. Tuls suggests in his breakdown that Ward could line up at nickel in the NFL, thanks to his ability to defend against the run and pass coverage against speedy wideouts.

With good production this fall, Ward could be the next Buckeye to hear his name called on the first day of next year’s draft, carrying on the rich tradition of #DBU.

Just turned 22.
And yes.
He's already this good.

The Buckeye alums continue their quest for $2 million.

It’s been a while since fans could get excited about a Scarlet & Gray men’s basketball team making a run in a tournament, but after the opening round of The Basketball Tournament, Ohio State fans might want to start paying attention. Headlined by former Buckeyes Aaron Craft, Jared Sullinger, David Lighty, Jon Diebler, Evan Ravenel, William Buford, and Dallas Lauderdale, team Scarlet & Gray knocked off the Chicago-based The Region 78-63 on Saturday to advance to Round 2 in hopes of claiming a title and the $2 million prize.

The Midwest’s second-seeded team returns to action today at 1:45 p.m. EDT against the Banner Boys, a team primarily made up of former players from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. The Banner Boys squeaked by the Jackson TN Underdawgs 61-59 in the first round.

The OSU alums have dubbed their run in the tournament #ThisOnesForThad, in honor of their college head coach Thad Matta who’s tenure as Ohio State’s head coach ended earlier this year. Former Buckeye great Scoonie Penn, who was recently named Ohio State’s Director of Player Development under new head coach Chris Holtmann, serves as Team Scarlet & Gray’s general manager for TBT.

Round One Recap

Despite 13 turnovers for the OSU alums keeping the game fairly close until the final minutes, team Scarlet & Gray never trailed in their opening round victory over The Region. Sullinger led the way with 18 points and 11 rebounds, Ravenel (13), Lighty (13), and Craft (10) all finished with double figures as well.

For a team with very little recent practice time together, Scarlet & Gray shot a respectable 47.8% from the field, but their 5 for 20 effort from behind the arc is something that will need to be improved as they continue their run.

In addition to the team’s former Buckeyes, Scarlet & Gray also saw contributions from Bowling Green’s Nate Miller and Northern Illinois’ Leon Rodgers. Each chipped in four points in the victory.

While it was obviously a much different environment than we are used to seeing the former Buckeyes playing in, watching some of Matta’s most memorable players on the floor together once again was exciting, and a little emotional.

Who is Team Scarlet & Gray playing?

The opening round victory for the Banner Boys was back-and-forth the entire game. Then, with the score tied at 59 and with time running out, Ronald Davis used a mid-air put-back of a Torye Pelham block to seal the thrilling victory.

Against the Underdawgs, The UW-Milwaukee alums used a balanced scoring attack to survive in a game that had six ties and 11 lead changes. Dylan Page led the Banner Boys with 16 points (to go along with 11 rebounds), Davis had 13, and Anthony Hill added 11.

As a whole, the team shot just 35.7% on 20-56 from the field, including 8-25 from downtown. With 12 turnovers forced and committed, like it was for team Scarlet & Gray, their opening round game was a little on the sloppy side, so who can maintain possession on Sunday should go a long way to determining who moves on in the quest for $2 million.

What’s next?

If team Scarlet & Gray knocks off the Banner Boys, they will advance to the Midwest region semifinals to be held next weekend in Brooklyn, NY. On Saturday, July 22nd, they would face the winner of the No. 6 Fort Wayne Champs and No. 3 Always a Brave Bradley University alumni team.

If the OSU alums are victorious next Saturday, they would advance to the regional finals where they would play the region’s top-seeded Marquette alumni team the Golden Eagles, No. 4 Purple and Black Attack (Kansas State alumni), No. 5 the Hilton Magic Legends from Iowa State, or No. 8 Majerus Slu Crew (St. Louis alumni). That game would take place on July 23rd, with a berth to the tournament semifinals on August 1st in Baltimore on the line.

All of TBT’s games next weekend will air on the ESPN family of networks.

Who Owes Who?

But seriously, I remember reading something about suicide statistics and I believe that the gist of it is that when most people are not able to commit suicide easily, they usually don't.

https://www.hsph.harvard.edu/means-matter/means-matter/survival/

reading through this a bit now. but i wonder if a slightly different possible theory is being missed here. when it comes to suicide i personally have always felt there are 2 core groups of persons who attempt suicide. people who legitimately want to die and people who are desperately seeking help but don't know how/where to get it. the first group is generally speaking pretty successful first time through. the second set never really wanted to die to begin with, rather they wanted help. in their "attempt" they either died, got the help/needed attention they were seeking, or realized how much this type of action wasn't going to help them get what they were seeking. so the likelihood of someone from group b repeating this type of action would almost certainly be extremely low. survivors from group a would likely be dictated by the severity of any injuries sustained in the attempt and or medical care provided as a result of the attempt.

The former teammates will take the court together one more time: #ThisOnesForThad

The first round for the Midwest and West regional brackets of The Basketball Tournament will tip-off Saturday, with some of Buckeye Nation’s favorite former players suiting for Team Scarlet & Gray at 3:15 p.m. EDT.

Despite a roller coaster of a year for Ohio State men’s basketball, things are starting to turn around as new head coach Chris Holtmann gets settled in and begins to bring in highly regarded recruits and staff. One of Holtmann’s most recent hires will be getting some early front office experience; alumnus Scoonie Penn is Ohio State’s newest Director of Player Development, but is also the General Manager for Team Scarlet & Gray.

“We think we’re a team that can win it. We look at the talent we've had here in the last 10 years or so, and we can match up with anybody. We want the state of Ohio supporting us. We're called Scarlet and Gray, but this team is a representation of the whole state."—Scoonie Penn

Penn will be joined by some of Thad Matta’s most notable alumni from 2011 to 2014, including Aaron Craft, Jon Diebler, David Lighty and Jared Sullinger. The team came together at the last minute, after Matta was relieved of his duties as head coach at Ohio State. Craft and co. were able to come up with the required numbers of votes to squeak into the tourney as a popular bid to honor their former coach.

TBT_Roster_with_Sully.jpg

What is The Basketball Tournament?

TBT is 5-on-5, single elimination annual basketball tournament, comprised of 64 teams — anyone 18 years or older can create a team -- competing for a winner-take-all prize of $2 million.

Teams are selected by region, with each of the four regions being comprised of 9 teams selected on popularity (number of online votes), 6 “at-large” selections (with at least 100 fans online), and one team that earns its place with a win in the TBT Jamboree (a set of games among 16 teams vying for 4 regional spots).

Game rules include: halves are 18 minutes, each team gets 4 timeouts per game, each player gets 6 fouls, the ball advances to half court on a dead ball timeout with less than one minute to play in the game, and international rules on basket interference (except on foul shots).

“To be able to play together again in something that honestly has a lot on the line I think is going to be a lot of fun,” Aaron Craft told Sports Illustrated. “It has an NCAA tournament feel, and that was always the best time of year when you have a good team.”

We're talking about practice

This group of Buckeyes didn’t find the success they did during and after their time at Ohio State by resting on their laurels. Despite being one of the most anticipated alumni teams to take the court for TBT, Thad Matta’s players visited Value City Arena several times in the week leading up to their Round 1 match-up to get in a little practice.

And some news that should make Buckeye Nation happy, the former standouts even took some time at the end of one of their practices to get some facetime with the young Bucks -- a group that could definitely use the wisdom from these legendary Ohio State names.

What’s next?

Should Scarlet & Gray come away with the — much anticipated — win, they will face-off in a second game Sunday.

Should they win that round, the Midwestern regional semi-final and final games will be played in Brooklyn, NY on July 22nd and 23rd; followed by the overall semi-finals in Baltimore, MD on August 1st, and the Championship Game August 3rd.
