MotS&G Post Spring Game Depth Chart: Offensive Line

Post Spring Game Depth Chart: Offensive Line
Richard Tongohan
via our good friends at Men of the Scarlet and Gray
Visit their fantastic blog and read the full article (and so much more) here

The Offensive Line or the Slobs have been a staple at Ohio State since the new Playoff system and as time has passed, the tradition still remains. The Buckeyes have one lone member of that Championship team remaining.

At Left Tackle, Jamarco Jones will return to protect J.T. Barrett’s blindside for the 2018 season. Jones was a solid contributor the entire year and he will try to continue to improve as the offseason continues and as the 2018 season approaches. Behind Jones, a talented true freshman Josh Myers will look to make the two-deep as his back-up, but nothing will be given to him. He will try to beat out upperclassmen such a Branden Bowen and Kevin Feder for the back-up spot.

Left Guard will return Michael Jordan, a rare true freshman starter who was the second Buckeye to earn a starting role along the Offensive Line just like Buckeye Legend Orlando Pace did years ago. Behind Jordan Gavin Cupp, Matthew Burrell, Brady Taylor and Demetrious Knox will try to earn their way onto the two-deep.

The Center will be leaned on because the lone member on the Offensive Line, Billy Price will cap off his Ohio State career and start at the position. He brings the experience and the stability to ensure the rest of the line lives up to the standard. Behind him is Gavin Cupp and Jack Wohlabaugh who are two more versatile linemen wanting to help the team this season.

Right Guard was the only question mark as Price changed positions and Pat Elflein left for the NFL. There are a bunch of good candidates in play here as incoming freshman Wyatt Davis will try to impress the coaches to be the third true freshman to start, but he will have to fend off the competition. Malcolm Pridgeon, Matthew Burrell, Demetrious Knox, Brady Taylor and Gavin Cupp are all in play as well, making Right Guard the most interesting open spot on the roster.

Finally, at Right Tackle Isaiah Prince will look to rebound after surrendering a dreadful amount of pressures a season ago. Prince was the weak link for the Slobs and he will have a fire in his belly to ensure he protects Barrett. Behind him is incoming freshman Thayer Munford and the upperclassmen Bowen and Feder, who will try to unseat him or earn spot on the two-deep.

Consistency will be key and with 4 of the 5 starters from last season returning, the Buckeyes will search for improvement in communication and protection. The trenches will be the biggest point of emphasis along with the lack of creativity with play calling. Coach Meyer made some changes to his staff and it is now fight or flight. How his team will respond to adversity and change. Clemson did a number on the Slobs and they are looking for redemption and quite possibly, payback after the beatdown that they endured at the Fiesta Bowl.

MotS&G Recruiting Spotlight: Matthew Jones

Recruiting Spotlight: Matthew Jones

Visit their fantastic blog and read the full article (and so much more) here

Another resounding boom is shot across the twittersphere, and just like that another key cog in the 2018 recruiting class was added to the puzzle. Coach Meyer found a way to get another gem, this time in the form of the #1 player in the state of New York, Matthew Jones. Jones is another versatile player who plays on both sides of the ball, but he is was recruited to play across the offensive line. He is listed as a Defensive Tackle and Tackle on his Hudl profile, but the Ohio State coaches see and want him on the Offensive Line. He is currently 6’4″, 315 lbs, but after a couple of months under Coach Marotti’s program, he will improve with time. Jones will join Tackle Max Wray as members of the 2018 recruiting class, the #1 class according to 24/7 Sports. This class has the potential to be another good one and if the dominoes fall in place, they could potentially add Tackle Jackson Carman to the mix.

LGHL Ohio State’s offensive line is putting in the hours to improve their game

Ohio State’s offensive line is putting in the hours to improve their game

They didn’t take Urban Meyer’s recent criticism lightly.

“After the spring game, coach Urban Meyer said that seven of the team’s nine positions were up to standard. He didn’t name the laggards, but it wouldn’t be a stretch to speculate that the offensive line was one. The linemen have taken their charge seriously. ”

- Bill Rabinowitz, Dispatch.com

Last season, while Ohio State ranked 11th nationally in rushing offense, with 245.23 yards per game, they were also tied for 71st in sacks allowed, giving up 28. This fall, the offensive line is projected to return four starters: Billy Price, Jamarco Jones, Michael Jordan, and Isaiah Prince, with Price moving from guard to center.

Despite a measure of statistical success, for much of last season it felt like quarterback J.T. Barrett was constantly under pressure, and offensive line penalties derailed drives at the most inopportune times. If the Buckeyes are going to contend for a conference title and a second-straight College Football Playoff berth, the line will need to improve enough to where it can be mentioned in the same conversation as the 2014 unit.

In pursuit of that goal, strength coach Mickey Marotti is putting the slobs through their paces, and they are spending increased hours on the mental side of the game, breaking down film and preparing for all possible defenses that could be used to combat their tried-and-true formations.

Fortunately for the unit, they will be protecting the most seasoned quarterback in the conference, who has shown an ability to elude pressure in the past. However, play-making H-back Curtis Samuel is now a member of the NFL’s Carolina Panthers, so a larger portion of the carries will likely go to sophomore running back Mike Weber, as well as the newly re-positioned Parris Campbell at H-back.

While both players have experience in the offense, they will be each taking on slightly different roles; Weber without Samuel’s big play ability to rely on, and Campbell adjusting to a new position. Their success, along with that of Barrett, will be fundamentally impacted by how well the offensive line congeals before the season kicks off.

“To say the head coach is off to a fast start would be an understatement. Just take a look at what has transpired since he was formally introduced as the new leader of the basketball program.”

- Charlie Lockhart, ScarletAndGame.com

When you unceremoniously fire the winningest coach in program history more than two months after the season ended and in the middle of one of the busiest recruiting periods of the year, the assumption is that the team is automatically placed behind the 8-ball for at least the next season.

However, things have moved quickly since Chris Holtmann was introduced to succeed Thad Matta as Ohio State’s men’s basketball coach, and now, all signs are seemingly pointed up. As Lockhart notes, from his introductory press conference to the assembling of his staff, nearly every move that the new coach has made has been well received by the media, Buckeye fans, and basketball insiders alike.

That being typed, those things do very little to immediately impact the on-court product of a team that has severely underachieved over the past two seasons, and is facing significant deficiencies at multiple spots on its roster. But with the commitment of four-star forward Kyle Young, who had previously signed a National Letter of Intent to play at Butler, enthusiasm for the 2017-2018 season is again on the rise. With a number of open roster spots, it will be interesting to see if Holtmann is able to parlay this momentum and convince any other players to join the Scarlet and Gray for his first season.

“Ohio State is going to be good. It's an obvious favorite in the Big Ten and a reasonable preseason playoff pick. But it also has to play Oklahoma, Penn State, Nebraska and Michigan. Those last two will both be on the road. So are two losses within the realm of possibility this season? I have to say yes.”

- Tom Fornelli, CBSSports.com

While one can argue with the over/under projections that Fornelli lays out for all of the Big Ten teams (and I would), what the Vegas numbers underscore is that, for the umpteenth year in a row, Ohio State is the king of the conference’s hill. While enthusiasm has been high for Michigan since Jim Harbaugh returned to Ann Arbor, and the likes of Michigan State, Wisconsin, and Penn State can occasionally land a solid punch outside its weight-class, OSU continues to be the Big Ten’s bellwether.

The Buckeyes have won or shared the division title in each of Meyer’s five seasons, and since Jim Tressel’s National Championship season of 2002, have finished outside of the top-10 in both major polls only twice: OSU was 20/19 in 2004, and unranked in Luke Fickell’s season as interim coach in 2011.

It goes without saying that no other school in the conference (and, save Alabama, no one in the country) can rival those results. So before we get caught up in the pomp and circumstance (and stress and nit-picking) of the college football season, take a few minutes to reflect on just how lucky we are to root for the Buckeyes.

Does the redshirt sophomore deserve more respect? Yeah.

College football is a “what have you done for me recently” sport. That was evident in 2015, when Cardale Jones was named the starter over J.T. Barrett, and shows up in scenarios every year, for many teams. It’s very easy and common for people to forget how good a player truly is after one poor performance. This shift seems to have happened with Ohio State redshirt sophomore running back Mike Weber.

In Weber’s first season as the primary ball carrier for the Buckeyes, the Detroit native ran for 1,096 yards (49th best in the country) and nine touchdowns on 182 carries . He averaged six yards a rush, and 84 yards a game. He did all of that, despite not being the actual primary ball carrier on the team, as that distinction falls technically falls to quarterback J.T. Barrett, who had 23 more carries.

Despite very solid stats, especially given his age, many fans and analysts alike are unsure of Weber heading into the 2017 campaign. There was a wide spread flip of opinions on Weber on December 31st, 2016, when Weber and his fellow Buckeyes put up a dreadful performance against eventual national champion Clemson.

Weber ran for just 24 yards on five carries, and struggled to find any semblance of space in Clemson’s stout front seven. He also fumbled on two of those five carries, and while Ohio State recovered one, the damage had been done to Weber’s reputation, as many fans and analysts alike were not kind to Weber after the game.

Sure, Weber didn’t have a good game, but he is not alone in bearing the blame. The passing game was completely stagnant, and the offensive line was downright awful. It’s hard to run successfully when your offensive line is disjointed, the play calling is unimaginative, and the defense knows you can’t pass.

Despite the terrible finale, there’s a lot to be excited about when it comes to Mike Weber and Ohio State’s running game in 2017. For one, Weber’s freshman year stats don’t look very different from Ezekiel Elliott’s first season as a starter in Columbus.

Obviously, Elliott is most well known for how he ended the 2014 season. He ran for 696 yards and eight touchdowns on 76 attempts, and played a huge part in Ohio State’s incredible three game run that ended in a championship. However, if you just look at Elliott’s 2014 regular season, his numbers are very similar to Weber’s 2016 performance.

In the first 12 games of the 2014 season, Elliott ran for 1182 yards and 10 touchdowns on 197 carries. Six yards a carry, 98.5 a game. In Weber’s first 12 games of the 2016 season, he ran for 1072 yards and nine touchdowns on 177 carries. Just about 6.1 yards a carry, a little over 89 a game. While Elliott was a far better blocker and receiver than Weber is, based on pure rushing ability, Mike Weber and Ezekiel Elliott were just about equal in their first season.

They’re obviously very different running backs. Ezekiel Elliott was a significantly better running back in those last three games, and in his final season in Columbus than he was for his first 12 games. However, if that jump that Elliott made is any indicator, Mike Weber could be in for a fantastic season in 2017, and when looking at his film, it’s easy to see that he’s just bursting with potential.

giphy.gif

This run against Bowling Green in the first week of the season is a great place to start, mainly because it showcases a lot of Weber’s natural talent that most running backs do not have at 19 years old. When Weber gets the handoff, he reads the pressure coming from the tackle very early on. That pressure is due to a missed down block by center Pat Elflein, as the guard, Billy Price, is meant to pull and kick out the linebacker, which he does.

Weber cuts left to avoid the tackle, and while many young running backs would look to cut further out to get the edge on this play, Weber stays patient, and hits the hole up the middle that Jamarco Jones opens up. Because of Weber’s vision and some nifty footwork, he turns a two yard run into a first down, and nearly a touchdown.

giphy_downsized_large.gif

On this play, also against Bowling Green, Weber really gets the chance to show off his vision, footwork, and patience. It’s a counter play, with the left guard, Michael Jordan, an the tight end, Marcus Baugh, both pulling to open up a hole on the outside for Weber. Bowling Green has two safeties high, and it’s the near safety’s job to crash in if he reads run, while the other safety and corners are in coverage in the case of a play action. This safety would have caused a lot of problems if it wasn’t for Weber’s skill.

Jordan does his job, picking up a linebacker inside, and Baugh does his job as well, though if it wasn’t for Weber, Baugh would’ve likely blocked the safety, allowing the linebacker to bear down on Weber and contain the play. Weber makes the smart move when he reads the safety, by staying on Baugh’s outside hip, forcing Baugh to block the linebacker. This isolates Weber and the safety, a matchup that Weber will win nine times out of ten because of his ability to change direction quickly. Once again, Weber’s vision, and quick feet turn a possible loss into a big gain.

giphy_downsized_large__1_.gif

Next up is one of Weber’s best plays of the season. While he doesn’t have the breakaway speed of a guy like Ezekiel Elliott, Mike Weber is truly one of the best halfbacks in the country in open space. Thanks to a big block from Pat Elflein, Weber has a huge lane to use for getting up to full speed before getting to the second level. He accelerates through the hole, but does so under control (reckless running plagued him in the early stages of the season). He has a safety to deal with about ten yards out, and does so beautifully, using the safety’s pursuit angle against him.

Once he gets to the final line of defense, a stiff arm would be extremely useful, especially because of the amount of strength Weber has, but if he puts everything together this offseason, this is the kind of run that could become a touchdown with more development.

giphy_downsized_large__2_.gif

Later on in that same game, Weber got to showcase his underrated speed on this beautiful read option play. JT Barrett reads the defensive end’s indecisiveness, and holds the ball for just long enough to keep the end away from Weber. Marcus Baugh kicks out the edgle linebacker perfectly, allowing Bily Price to get downfield and take out a safety on his pull block. Add in a great block by Parris Campbell, and Weber has a wide open hole to run through.

Weber accelerates through the hole, follows his blockers, and stays inside of the Campbell block. It’s rare to see a young back trust his blockers like Weber does on this play, and it’s that trust that makes it work. Once Weber hits the 40 yard line, no one is catching him, even if he isn’t a track star like Elliott was.

Fun little note, this play probably looks very familiar, if you watched Ohio State’s double overtime thriller over Michigan. It’s a very similar concept to the play that sunk Michigan, albeit with Curtis Samuel getting the ball instead of Weber.

giphy__1_.gif

The Penn State game is often talked about as being a terrible team performance, which isn’t really true. The defense was as good as usual, and Mike Weber had some fantastic runs, despite his offensive line. This play showcases Weber’s potential so perfectly, because it’s one of the plays where everything just came together for him on one run. He accelerates quickly, uses his vision, runs downhill, cuts, and most importantly, stays under control, and keeps his balance. He uses a stiff arm to get five extra yards, and just gashes a defense that had been stifling the Buckeyes to that point.

One of the main thing that comes with experience is consistency, and with a year of experience under his belt, Mike Weber could be very dangerous next year on plays like this if he can do them more frequently. These flashes last season were rare, but they were rare, and they’ll only become more frequent as Weber continues to mature and adjust to the speed of the game.

giphy_downsized_large__3_.gif

The last play we’ll look at is one of Weber’s best plays on the year. It didn’t go for a massive gain, but it’s just so fun to watch, and it’s so telling of who he could be as a player. Weber hits the hole, lowers his shoulder, and tears right through three tackles. He shows off some impressive balance, sheds another tackle, and very nearly hits the edge for a 50 yard, Carlos Hyde-esque touchdown run.

The difference between Weber’s freshman season and his sophomore season may be a lot like this play, and a lot of other plays from the 2016 season. Weber had what felt like 100 runs that he almost broke for a touchdown. “Almost” might be the best way to describe his season. If he develops like he should, those “almosts” could turn into touchdowns, and Mike Weber could turn into a first round pick.

A new coaching staff means Ohio State’s 2018 class is back to the drawing board

A new coaching staff often means big changes on the recruiting front. Now, the Buckeyes have a completely clean 2018 slate, as their last commitment from the Thad Matta era is re-opening his options.

Per Zach Fleer, four-star SG Dane Goodwin has decommitted from Ohio State, although he will continue to consider the Buckeyes.

'18 Upper Arlington SG Dane Goodwin has opened his recruitment and decommitted from Ohio State. He will still consider OSU, however.

— Zach Fleer (@ZachFleer270) June 21, 2017

Adam Jardy of the Columbus Dispatch appears to confirm the report.

I have a story posting to Dispatch dot com, but Dane Goodwin has decommitted from the #Buckeyes and is reopening his recruitment.

— Adam Jardy (@AdamJardy) June 21, 2017

Goodwin, a 6-4, high four-star shooting guard, has seen his profile rise after an exceptional high school season. He’s currently ranked as the 4th best player in the state of Ohio, and in the top 75 nationally, per the 247 Sports Composite.

Earlier in June, Goodwin reaffirmed his commitment to the program, and had been a Buckeye commitment since 2014, but clearly, something has changed.

The Buckeyes badly need guards, especially guards that can space the floor like Goodwin, and the Upper Arlington product may very well still remain on Ohio State’s radar. But given the change in coaches and relationships, starting over isn’t that surprising.

Ohio State’s other 2018 commitments, Darius Bazley and Justin Ahrens, also decommitted.

At a recent camp, an in-state prospect showed off what he could do for the Buckeyes.

Ohio State is in the middle of camp season and as the days go on, more and more prospects are flocking to Columbus, Ohio to showcase their skills in front of the coaching staff.

In-state defensive end Noah Potter recently camped at Ohio State and got rave reviews from the Buckeyes’ coaching staff, most notably from defensive line coach Larry Johnson. According to reports, after Potter’s impressive showing, coach Johnson told him that he has a chance to be “scary good.”

After #OhioState camp @Buckeyes D-line coach Larry Johnson tells Ohioan he can be "scary good;" more OSU recruiting https://t.co/ndGdR5PN5Z

— Bill Kurelic (@Bill_Kurelic) June 21, 2017

Potter is a class of 2019 prospect who currently holds five total offers. His offer list does not include Ohio State, but he’s working towards that by coming to camps. Potter already has prototype size at 6-foot-6, 240 pounds, and there’s a good chance that he isn’t quite done growing yet. Potter has visited Ohio State numerous times over the last year and that shows that there is heavy interest on his part. With more impressive camp showings and a good junior season, Potter could hold an Ohio State offer by this time next year.

Here are some highlights from Potter’s sophomore season:

  • Though the interest has faded in recent months between Ohio State and in-state running back Tavion Thomas, it is worth noting that he committed to Oklahoma yesterday. If this recruitment wasn’t officially over between both sides, it is now.

Barrett and his teammates have been striving to improve the passing game with Kevin Wilson’s system.

“It's not just me, but the leaders on our team. We have a lot of leaders in our position groups. When it comes to the times when coaches can't be out there, and we have the footballs out, we're coaching each other and doing things we know how to as older guys.”

Ohio State’s offseason is still in full swing as the Buckeyes continue to train for the upcoming 2017 campaign. Expectations are high in Columbus, as always, but specifically for the changes that are coming to the offense. Kevin Wilson was named the offensive coordinator, which should bring plenty of firepower to an offense that last season struggled to make big plays when it mattered most. The lack of playmaking came mostly from the passing game, led by senior quarterback J.T. Barrett. Barrett has shown he’s capable of running a high-octane offense in the past, helping lead the 2014 edition of the Buckeyes to the Big Ten championship before going down with injury against Michigan. After some ups and downs over the past two seasons, Barrett says things are going well with the changes in the passing game so far.

Taking what they implemented in the spring, Barrett and several of his teammates have been working on improving their technique during non-mandatory practices on the field without any coaches around. It’s up to the players to be accountable for each other as they work on their chemistry on the field. For the players, the waiting until they can be coached again can be frustrating, but with the season approaching soon enough, it won’t be long before the Buckeyes hit the field for fall practices.

“Just as importantly, though, is the message that the Ohio State brand – even after a pair of rough years – still resonates with top Ohio talent. That has been up for debate as of late, and Young’s decision shows that it is possible to grow up within the Buckeye State but not in central Ohio and still covet the chance to play in Columbus.”

- Adam Jardy, The Columbus Dispatch

With the recent hiring of Chris Holtmann, there was early talk of former Butler commit Kyle Young following Holtmann to Ohio State after the hire was official. Now, as we know, Young decided to go through with following the head coach that recruited him. This is a big deal for the Buckeyes who haven’t had the greatest success when it comes to recruiting the past couple of years. Holtmann’s flipping of Young from Butler to Ohio State helps the Buckeyes both on the court and off of it. Young is an Ohio-native and was rated as the second-best prospect in Ohio behind Kaleb Wesson. He was also part of a recruiting class at Butler that was on its way to being considered one of the best in school history.

Now, Young is committed to the Buckeyes and things are already starting to look up. It’s still going to be a process to get Ohio State back among the Big Ten’s best, but this is a step in the right direction in both competitiveness and recruiting. Young was going to be a key factor at Butler but it’s up to him and the coaching staff to decide what kind of role he’ll have with the Buckeyes.

“[The Basketball Tournament 2017] #2 Scarlet and Gray (Ohio State Alumni)”

- TheTournament.com

Speaking of Ohio State basketball, do you miss the good old days of Aaron Craft? Greg Oden? David Lighty? Well, there’s some good news. The Basketball Tournament (TBT) hosts a basketball tournament (duh) with teams from all across the country and more importantly, has teams compiled of former college and even professional basketball players. The Scarlet and Gray team which consists of mostly Ohio State alumni, is listed as a two-seed in their region (similar to the NCAA tournament) and includes former greats like Craft, Oden, Lighty and more.

Former players also include William Buford, Jon Diebler, Evan Ravenel, Dallas Lauderdale, and even include Scoonie Penn as the team’s general manager. All in all, this seems like it should be a fun event filled with old beloved names, and will even be shown on ESPN once the tournament reaches the Super 16.
