Not even a mid-game evacuation could stop the Buckeyes from picking up their fourth-straight victory.

After a week off, the Ohio State men’s basketball team (9-3, 2-0) returned to the court at the Value City Arena in Columbus on Saturday night, and won their fourth game in a row by knocking off the Appalachian State Mountaineers (5-7), 80-67.

Coming into the game, both squads had been on a bit of a break, as they each had the week off following games on Saturday, Dec. 9. The down time dedicated to finals made the game a bit choppy at first, but the Buckeyes settled into a rhythm by the mid-point of the first half. As has become part of the script this season, redshirt junior forward Keita Bates-Diop was Mr. Everything for the Buckeyes—leading the way to another OSU victory.

The scoring opened as Kaleb Wesson drew a double-team underneath and found a streaking Jae’Sean Tate, who slammed it home. The assist made up for an airball three-point attempt from the top of the key for the Buckeye freshman on OSU’s first offensive possession of the game.

The App State offense early on came from junior guard Ronshad Shabazz. He had four of the Mountaineers first seven points, including a circus lay-in as time expired on the shot clock.

Both teams showed a bit of rust in the early going after their week-long layoffs. In addition to Wesson’s airball, Kam Williams had one of his own, and the threes that had fueled the Buckeyes’ recent success were hard to come by on Saturday; OSU missed its first six three-point attempts.

On App State’s possession after the first media timeout, forward Isaac Johnson streaked into the lane only to run smack dab into a stationary Kaleb Wesson. With the OSU center’s arms straight up, Johnson fell down and turned over the ball via a travel.

As the action moved to the under-12 minute break, the Buckeyes were still struggling to get their shooting going. Hitting 6-14 (42.9%) from the field, including 0-4 from behind the arc, they led 14-11. For their part, App State was only shooting 5-10 from the floor and 1-4 from deep.

With both teams looking to regain their touch, they turned towards the paint to find points, as both the Mountaineers and Buckeyes had eight points in the paint at that timeout. One part of the Buckeyes’ game that did not seem to be hampered by the week off was turnovers. While keeping the ball safe had been a bit of a bugaboo for OSU so far this season, halfway through the first half, the Scarlet and Gray only turned the ball over twice compared to App State’s five.

At the 9:01 mark, Kaleb Wesson picked up his second foul, but unlike earlier in the season, head coach Chris Holtmann kept the freshman in the game, as he was having one of his best all-around performances. However, after a few minutes, the center did sit down for the majority of the rest of the half.

One of the things that kept the Buckeyes in the lead, despite their somewhat chilly shooting, was the way that they were sharing the ball in order to find the open man.

As has been the case throughout the season, Bates-Diop led the Buckeyes in the first half. The junior was the top-scorer in the first 20 minutes with 12. He also added four boards before the half, which was tied with Kaleb Wesson for the most in the game. At the break, Bates-Diop also had four steals, two blocks, and zero turnovers in his 19 minutes of work.

With the OSU lead at 25-17 with just under six minutes to go in the half, Bates-Diop blocked a layup attempt from Johnson, and after corralling the ball, raced to the other end to secure a layup of his own, giving the Buckeyes the double-digit lead.

About four minutes of game-time later, KBD went to the floor to secure a steal, then gave up the ball to a breaking Andrew Dakich who drove into the lane, spun to the right and then fed a driving Tate who slammed it home.

That Tate dunk was followed by a pair of free-throws by C.J. Jackson which helped OSU end the first half on a 6-0 run, hitting five of their final seven field goals before the break. The score at halftime was Ohio State 40, Appalachian State 27.

In addition to Bates-Diop’s 12, Tate put up a strong nine points in the half to go along with three boards.

The biggest discrepancy between the teams in the first half was in turnovers. Perhaps uncharacteristically, the Buckeyes only turned it over four times in the half, while the Mountaineers had coughed it up 10 times, leading to nine points for OSU.

Despite the teams shooting a combined 2-15 from downtown, they’d been able to get their shooting percentages back up after rocky starts. After 20 minutes, the Bucks were 14-28 (50%) and App State was 11-25 (44%).

After being sidelined due to injuries recently, both Kyle Young and Micah Potter returned to limited action for the Buckeyes in the first hald. Neither scored in the first 20 minutes (Young missed the only shot the pair attempted), but Young did pick up a pair of fouls which likely led to Andre Wesson getting a little more playing time than normal. The sophomore took advantage, converting on his only shot from the floor and both of his attempts from the charity stripe.

On the first possession from the break, App State’s Griffin Kinney picked up a layup for the Mountaineers, and then the Buckeyes followed up with consecutive three-point possessions. First as Jackson hit a corner three, and then secondly as Kaleb Wesson was fouled on a spinning layup before converting the free-throw attempt. Just a minute and 14 seconds into the half, Holtman sent Young into the game to spell the younger Wesson.

Then with 17:47 left in the game, alarms went off in the Schottenstein Center and announcements were made that directed all fans to exit the arena. Likewise, both teams were escorted to the locker-rooms. According to the Big Ten Network, it was eventually determined that a smoke alarm in a concession area necessitated the evacuation.

After about a 12-minute delay, the game began again with the Buckeyes up 48-33. However, the Scarlet and Gray appeared to be a little sloppy after returning to the floor. App State’s Shabazz was at the line when the delay started, and hit the free-throw when the game resumed.

Then, following a Kaleb Wesson miss, Johnson hit a three to cut the lead to 11. Next, after a Buckeye turnover, Johnson hit a nifty layup on an out-of-bounds play as the shot-clock expired.

However, with the Mountaineers on a mini-run, Bates-Diop decided enough was enough and drove to the basket for the layup. On the subsequent Buckeye possession, Kaleb Wesson was fouled while converting a spinning layup. He missed the following free throw, but the freshman’s bucket reestablished a 13-point lead for OSU, 52-39.

Tough Kaleb Wesson wasn’t in significant foul trouble midway through the second half, his playing time was limited—with Young seeming to get the bulk of the extra minutes. While Young is not the offensive post presence that Wesson is, he provided the Buckeyes with a strong defensive effort underneath.

With a little more than 10 minutes left in the half, Young took a rebound and hit Dakich with the outlet who hit Tate wth the mid-lane bounce pass for the layup. Tate was fouled on the play, but didn’t hit the free-throw. On the next possession, Jackson banked in a three-pointer to give the home team their first 20-point lead of the night at 67-47.

With about five minutes left in regulation, Tate slapped down on a shot attempt by Johnson, and even though replay made it seem like he got all ball, Tate was charged with his fourth foul. Kaleb Wesson also had picked up his fourth, and was already out of the game; Tate remained in the action.

On the next App State possession, Shabazz drove towards the basket on fast-break only to find Tate in his way. The Mountaineer guard raised his arm on contact and was charged with his third foul.

The large lead seemed to give the Buckeye players a sense of security, at least on the offensive end. Rather than working the ball inside, as they had to build the advantage, they began settling for long-range shots, leading to a more than four-minute drought, which allowed App State to cut the lead to 74-58.

A layup by Tate ended scoreless spell for the Buckeyes. However, for the second time in the game, he did not make the free-throw to complete the old-fashioned three-point play.

Another interesting note from the game is that nine Buckeyes recorded more than 10 minutes of playing time. In the Thad Matta-era, especially in the latter years, the bench was used sparingly as the conference season approached. However with Holtmann’s young squad, the ability to get inexperienced players valuable action very well should pay dividends as the bruising Big Ten season progresses.

Kaleb Wesson picked up his fifth foul with 1:42 remaining as he was trying to establish position in the lane. He finished the game with 16 points and eight rebounds.

Both teams ended the game with four players in double-digits. Tate led all scorers with 19, followed by Bates-Diop’s 18. KBD also turned in a game-high eight boards. Williams rounded out the Buckeyes quartet with 11.

For the Mountaineers, it was Shabazz with 15, Kinney with 14, and Johnson and Justin Forrest with a dozen apiece.

With the Buckeyes shooting a woeful 3-14 (21.4%) from three-point land, they found the bulk of their scoring in the lane. Fifty of their 80 points came in the paint.

The Ohio State Buckeyes will be back on the hardwood on Tue. Dec. 19 at 7:00 p.m. ET as they take on The Citadel at the Value City Arena. The game will again be broadcast on the Big Ten Network.

The Buckeyes face the Mountaineers tonight at 6 p.m. on BTN.

The Ohio State Buckeyes have had a week off leading up to the holidays, but they’re back on their feet now as they prepare to face the Appalachian State Mountaineers in Columbus later today.

It’s been a strange schedule for the Buckeyes this season, as the team has already played two games in their conference slate before jumping back into a handful of non-conference matchups. Most recently, Ohio State earned a dominant, 35-point win over William and Mary in Columbus. Junior forward Keita Bates-Diop once again led the way for the Buckeyes with 27 points, and was one of four players scoring in double digits.

Ohio State is riding a three-game win streak that started with a statement victory over Wisconsin at the Kohl Center, and continued with a huge comeback over Michigan at the Value City Arena. Despite some lineup changes by head coach Chris Holtmann, including not starting point guard C.J. Jackson for two games, things are gelling for the squad, which has seen improved three-point shooting and fewer turnovers in the last few games. The Buckeyes shot nearly 65 percent from the field, including 52 percent from three point range against William and Mary, and committed a better-than-average 11 turnovers in the matchup.

The Mountaineers, meanwhile, are 5-6 on the season, but most of their losses have been close--including a six-point defeat to Iowa State early in the season. The team is averaging 88 points per game on the season at 47 percent shooting. However, App State is currently on a two-game skid, having lost close ones to Western Carolina and Akron. Like the Buckeyes, the Mountaineers have had a week off since their last matchup.

The Mountaineers were picked to finish 11th out of the 12 teams in the Sun Belt Conference preseason coaches poll--the same spot where they finished last season. Appalachian State returns 12 players from last year’s roster, including three starters in junior guard Ronshad Shabazz, junior forward Tyrell Johnson and senior forward Griffin Kinney.

Head coach Jim Fox took the helm of the Mountaineers in 2014 and had been steadily rebuilding the program over the past three seasons. Under Fox, Appalachian State has amassed a 25-36 overall record in more than three seasons, though the team hasn’t won more than 10 games in a year since the 2014-15 campaign.

Officially, this game marks the first meeting all-time between Ohio State and Appalachian State, but the Buckeyes own a 7-3 record against Sun Belt teams. Unofficially, Ohio State defeated Appalachian State in the first round of the 2000 NCAA Tournament, but later was forced to vacate the win. Appalachian State, meanwhile, has an outstanding record against a certain team up north in the Big Ten...on the football field at least.

Numbers to know

48

The Buckeyes have moved into the top-50 of the latest KenPom rankings. Ohio State started the season at the No. 78 spot (No. 10 in the Big Ten), but have moved up the list with a combination of decent wins and no terrible losses. While the Buckeyes only have one win over a fellow top-50 team (Michigan, No. 36), their only losses have come to teams ranked in the top-50. Compared to last season, when Ohio State endured “bad” losses to teams outside the top-100, including No. 271 Florida Atlantic, things seem to be on the up-and-up under Holtmann. The team will have a tough stretch ahead in Big Ten play as they face Maryland (No. 38), Penn State (No.40), Minnesota (No. 41) and Northwestern (No. 44). That’s also not including the next true test for the Buckeyes when they face No. 9 UNC. For the record, Appalachian State is No. 186.

1

The number of turnovers C.J. Jackson committed against William and Mary last week. Chris Holtmann made a bold statement when he benched Jackson after Ohio State’s brutal loss to Clemson in the Big Ten/ACC Challenge. Jackson himself committed five of the team’s 14 turnovers versus the Tigers. Against Butler, he gave up seven. Holtmann has been known to be tough on his point guards, and even stated after benching Jackson that he was “sending a message.” Jackson obviously received the message loud and clear. He committed just one turnover against Wisconsin and two against Michigan, while averaging four assists per game.

48%

Ohio State was pretty abysmal from behind the arc early this season, but the team has turned it on in their three-game stretch against Wisconsin, Michigan and William and Mary, collectively hitting 23 of their 48 attempts from three-point range. Overall, the Buckeyes are averaging 36.2 percent from three on the season. Keita Bates-Diop leads the category for Ohio State, hitting more than 44 percent of his shots from behind the arc. C.J. Jackson has been on a streak himself, making 43 percent of his three-point attempts. The Buckeyes are sixth in the conference in three-point percentage, but that ranking may improve as the team starts to rely more on the three to bolster their scoring.

Cast of characters

Ohio State

C.J. Jackson

The junior point guard had 16 points in 28 minutes against the Tribe last week in his first start back since the Buckeyes’ loss to Clemson last month. While turnovers have been an issue for Jackson throughout the season, he has managed to clean up his play during the last three-game stretch. Coming off of the bench against Wisconsin and Michigan, Jackson scored 10 and 17 points, respectively, before getting back into a starting role against William and Mary. Jackson is the second-leading scorer on the season for Ohio State, averaging 13.5 points per game and a team-high four assists per outing. Holtmann has already made his point, but Jackson will need to continue to limit his turnovers as the Buckeyes move toward a tough conference schedule in January.

Keita Bates-Diop

The redshirt junior has been the on-court leader for Ohio State through the duration of the season. He is the Buckeyes’ leading scorer, averaging 18.3 points per game. While his rebounds have fallen off somewhat (he had a double-double nearly every game to start the season), he is still pulling down 9.5 boards per game--also a team-high. Most recently, Bates-Diop dropped 27 points on William and Mary, which is a career-high for the junior forward. That performance, along with his heroics in the Buckeyes’ comeback win over Michigan, earned Bates-Diop Big Ten Player of the Week honors last week. While other players continue to develop around him, Bates-Diop has been a rock that Holtmann has been able to rely on throughout the season.

Appalachian State

Ronshad Shabazz

The junior guard from Raleigh is the leading scorer for the Mountaineers, averaging nearly 22 points per game and scoring in double figures every game this season. This year marks Shabazz's third season as a starter. He averaged 11.9 points per game during his freshman season, improved in his sophomore campaign when he logged 16.7 and continues to pad his stats with more points this year; he has scored more than 1,000 points over the course of his career at Appalachian State. In the team’s last outing against Akron, Shabaaz notched a season-high 26, including nine from three-point range.

Griffin Kinney

The Delaware, OH native is a four-year player for Appalachian State, and is the team’s third-leading scorer, averaging 11 points per game. Like Shabaaz, Kinney has gotten better with age, continuing to improve his key stats each year that he’s been with the program. This season, he has been the most consistent shooter among the starting five, hitting more than 62 percent of his shots from the field. He is also second on the team in rebounds, pulling down 5.2 per game. Most recently, Kinney hit a career-high 28 points against Akron last week during his 100th game as a Mountaineer.

Plus, the Ohio State men’s gymnastic team is expected to take home the Big Ten title in 2018.

Apparently there is misinformation about my future. I want to make a bold statement that I am not going anywhere and I’m proud to be Buckeye. #Buckeyes #RushmenForLife

— Larry A. Johnson (@R2X_Rushmen1) December 15, 2017

With coaching changes happening all across the college football landscape, it’s not really all that surprising that Ohio State coach Larry Johnson’s name would be among those rumors. At 65 years old, it’s likely the coach was addressing the chances of him retiring versus leaving for another program, but it’s still good news for the Buckeyes.

The Assistant Head Coach/Defensive Line coach didn’t mince words on Friday and made it abundantly clear that his plans were to stay with Ohio State for the long haul.

As someone who helped coach the likes of Joey and Nick Bosa, Sam Hubbard and Tyquan Lewis, Johnson’s commitment to the Ohio State program should help the Buckeyes on the recruiting trail as well. Johnson is a big draw for some of the top d-line talent in the country, and his mere presence should continue to attract top name targets. The Assistant Head Coach has been with Urban Meyer since 2014, and has produced the Big Ten Defensive Lineman of the Year every year since.

“Another year and it’s more high expectations for head coach Rustam Sharipov and the Ohio State men’s gymnastics team. For the fourth-consecutive season, the Scarlet and Gray have been picked by Big Ten coaches as the preseason favorite to claim the conference title.”

-Ohio State Buckeyes

The Buckeyes have consistently boasted one of the best men’s gymnastics teams in the country. That streak is expected to continue as the team heads into the 2018 season, as they are once again projected to take home a Big Ten championship.

However, it isn’t just within the conference that the team is expected to succeed, they also enter the season ranked No. 3 in the preseason College Gymnastics Association coaches poll. Their lofty spot is due in large part to returning a handful of guys from last year’s team that went on to finish as the runners-up in the NCAA competition and the Big Ten champs.

“This preseason poll earns us nothing and we know that every year is a new year. Instead, we focus our energy on finding ways to push ourselves in the gym to get better on a daily basis and everything else will take care of itself,” said head coach Rustam Sharipov.

The Buckeyes also feature two of the athletes tabbed as Athletes to Watch for the 2018 season, Sean Melton and Alec Yoder. Both Melton and Yoder earned spots on the U.S. National Team this summer after impressive performances at the P&G Championships.

The season will start for the Buckeyes in less than a month, with the Ohio State team beginning their 2018 slate on the road in Colorado on Jan. 13, on the Air Force campus.

“Sammy Edwards, Nikki Walts and Morgan Wolcott, seniors on the Ohio State women’s soccer team, have been named Scholar All-Americans by the United Soccer Coaches, the organization announced Thursday. ”

-Ohio State Buckeyes

As the 2017 soccer season came to an end, the OSU women’s squad finished 15-5-1 on the year and claimed the first outright Big Ten championship in program history. Along with a division title, three players took home Scholar All-America honors, with Nikki Walts and Morgan Wolcott getting first-team nods and Sammy Edwards receiving second-team Scholar All-American.

A team co-captain, Nikki Walts also finished the season as Big Ten Midfielder of the Year and first team All-Big Ten in 2017, wrapping up the year ranked No. 1 on the team and No. 2 in the conference with nine assists in her 21 starts.

Morgan Wolcott is a three-time team captain for the Buckeyes, and helped the team to a 0.59 goals-against average and 10 shutouts. As an 18-match starter, Wolcott also earned Big Ten Defender of the Year, first team All-Big Ten and second team CoSIDA Academic All-District honors.

MC&J hopes some early Christmas treats are under the tree, as we pick the first seven games of the bowl season

Last week ATS: 5-4 (5-3 National, 0-1 B1G)

Season ATS: 93-93-4 (45-40-2 National, 48-53-2 B1G)

I really wish MC&J would have had a better record heading into bowl season, but if we can’t have a huge winning percentage to start the postseason, what better way to go in than even? After all, teams only have to be .500 to make a bowl. So, if it’s good enough for them, it’s good enough for us. This truly means that bowl season is going to decide it all.

Bowl games:

New Orleans Bowl: Troy (-7) v. North Texas - 1:00 PM EST - ESPN

Troy pulled off one of the biggest upsets of the college football season when they went into Baton Rouge in late September and beat LSU 24-21. The Trojans have quietly put together one of the better seasons among Group of Five teams, and a win on Saturday would give them 11 wins for the first time since they joined the FBS in 2001.

After failing to reach .500 for the last three seasons, North Texas has got to nine wins this season for the first time since 2013. The combination of quarterback Mason Fine and running back Jeffrey Wilson has provided the Mean Green with a potent offensive attack that many of their opponents have had a hard time slowing down.

It isn’t exactly ideal to be laying a touchdown to begin bowl season against a North Texas team that can put some points up on the board, but Troy has one of the better defenses that North Texas has squared off against. We get an entertaining bowl game to start the year, with Troy eventually winning by double-digits.

Troy 38, North Texas 28

Cure Bowl: Western Kentucky (-6.5) v. Georgia State - 2:30 PM EST - CBS Sports Network

The Hilltoppers are still able to move the football through the air with quarterback Mike White, but there has been a noticeable regression of their passing attack this year without head coach Jeff Brohm, who moved on to Purdue. Western Kentucky has had trouble running the football this year, with D’Andre Ferby leading the way with just 362 yards rushing.

Georgia State has played considerably better away from home, and while I think the Hilltoppers are going to take the win, the Panthers will at least keep things close. In a game that is pretty much a toss-up, take the points.

Western Kentucky 23, Georgia State 20

Las Vegas Bowl: No. 25 Boise State v. Oregon (-7) - 3:30 PM EST - ABC

I had a write-up about how Oregon was going to build some momentum for next year now that Mario Cristobal has taken over as head coach, and quarterback Justin Herbert is healthy again. I threw it in the trash when it was announced that senior running back Royce Freeman would skip this game to concentrate on the NFL Draft.

While Freeman isn’t going to show up for the postseason, Boise State usually does, winning six of their last eight bowl games. Slowing down the Oregon offense won’t be easy, even without Freeman, the Broncos have one of the better defenses in the country. Even if Boise State doesn’t win, I feel like they keep things close against the Ducks.

Oregon 35, Boise State 31

New Mexico Bowl: Marshall v. Colorado State (-6) - 4:30 PM EST - ESPN

I always like calling this the Breaking Bad Bowl because I honestly can’t associate much else with New Mexico. Maybe they should try to get sponsors like Los Pollos Hermanos or The Offices of Saul Goodman & Associates as sponsors.

Oh yeah, there is a football game going on. Sorry, I got carried away for a second. I can’t say that I’ve watched a whole bunch of either team this year, but Colorado State does jump off the page with some of the stats they’ve racked up. Not only has Nick Stevens thrown for 3,479 yards and 27 touchdowns, with his favorite target being Michael Gallup, who hauled in 94 catches and 1,345 yards, but Dalyn Dawkins also rolled up 1,349 yards on the ground.

I just think Colorado State is going to have too much offense for Marshall to keep pace with in this one. By the end of the game Mike Bobo will be telling Doc Holliday to “say my name.”

Colorado State 31, Marshall 20

Camellia Bowl: Middle Tennessee State v. Arkansas State (-3.5) - 8:00 PM EST - ESPN

Who knows where Middle Tennessee State might be bowling this year had quarterback Brent Stockstill not gotten injured earlier in the season. After leading the Blue Raiders to an upset win over Syracuse early on, Stockstill was sidelined for the next six games, which Middle Tennessee State lost four of. Since returning, the Blue Raiders have won three out of four.

Arkansas State started the season with a near-upset of Nebraska in Lincoln, and continued to impress the rest of the way, and quarterback Justice Hansen threw for 34 touchdowns this year. However, I’m nervous about the 15 interceptions that he threw, but I think the Arkansas State quarterback will come out on top of the battle with Stockstill.

Arkansas State 41, Middle Tennessee State 34

Boca Raton Bowl: Akron v. Florida Atlantic (-23) - 7:00 PM EST - ESPN

What a first season Lane Kiffin put together in Boca Raton, and to cap it off the Owls get a home game to close it out. After losing three of their first four this year, Florida Atlantic rattled off nine-straight wins and took home the Conference USA crown.

Akron certainly has been put through the wringer this year. After starting the season with non-conference games against Penn State, Iowa State, and Troy, the Zips also had to face Toledo twice, with the most recent game against the Rockets being a loss in the MAC Championship Game.

Even though the Zips were able to cover a big spread last time out against Toledo, I don’t think the same fate will be in store for Terry Bowden’s team on Tuesday night. Even though this spread is huge for a bowl game, its hard to see Florida Atlantic getting tested at home, especially since the Owls have scored at least 30 points in 10 straight games.

Florida Atlantic 55, Akron 21

Frisco Bowl: Louisiana Tech v. SMU (-5) - 8:00 PM EST

Since there wasn’t a whole bunch of intrigue along with this game heading in, SMU spiced things up a bit when they announced that former Louisiana Tech head coach Sonny Dykes would be coaching the Mustangs in the bowl game. SMU was forced to name a new coach after Chad Morris left to take the Arkansas gig.

When you think of bleh bowl teams, Louisiana Tech is one of them. Not that the Bulldogs can’t play some entertaining football, but they are just one of those 6-6 teams that does some things well, but nothing all that great. I keep trying to find a reason to pick Louisiana Tech here, especially with SMU’s terrible defense, but I’m just not finding any reason to not take Dykes and the Mustangs.

SMU 44, Lousiana Tech 31
